Pick Me

Eva

"Why are you doing this to me?" I asked, tears streaming down my face as my handcuffed hands pressed against the glass separating us. "You should tell the Alpha that you were the one who cared for his brother, not me."

Mona folded her arms beneath her chest, sneering, "Is that why you demanded to see me? Gosh! I shouldn't have wasted my time coming here. I only came because your sister pleaded for my presence. Don't ever call me for this nonsense again."

Then, she stormed off, nearly pushing my sister out of the way. My elder sister, Thelma, who is my only family since our parents' death, approached me and sat down on the chair facing me, offering comfort. "Don't worry," she assured me. "You'll be fine. I'll get to the bottom of this."

"Please, get me a good lawyer, probably one from the city," I sobbed, shaking my head. "Nobody believes me, not even my fiancé."

"Get a grip, please," Thelma snapped, frowning. "If only you had listened to me when I told you to come with me to the city. You always claimed you loved it here in this pack. Now, look at you."

"I'm sorry, Thelma," I sobbed, regretting my past decisions. "If I can make it out of here alive, I'll follow you to the city, I promise."

"What if you don't make it out of here alive?" Thelma asked, tears suddenly filling her eyes.

"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked, fear rising in my voice. "Are you hoping that I die or something?"

"I didn't want to tell you anything, Eva, but I guess I have no choice," she sobbed, her gaze downwards.

"Tell me," I said, my heart racing. "What happened?"

"Alpha Christopher has decreed that you won't be getting a lawyer," she said. My face fell, and before I could ask why, she quickly continued, "He says you shall be executed by hanging."

My throat tightened, and my face turned red. "What did you just say?" I asked, my voice cracking as sobs threatened to escape.

"Why are you even still wearing that engagement ring?" she barked, staring at my trembling long fingers. "It's over already, so take it off."

"No, please," I uttered, shaking my head. "Christopher doesn't know what he's saying. Please beg him for me. I need to talk to him. Tell him that I also accept him having an affair—I don't care."

Thelma's eyes widened in shock. "Affair? What are you talking about?"

I continued sobbing and lowered my gaze. "He thinks I have no idea, but he recently started having an affair."

"Do you know who the woman is?" she asked, anger in her voice.

"What are you planning to do?" I asked, quickly looking at her. "Please, forget it. Forget what I said."

"You fool," she seethed. "I also know about this. He's having an affair with that nurse, right? Your coworker, what's her name again? Mona?"

My eyes widened in shock. "How… how do you know that?"

"Why wouldn't I know, huh?" she yelled. "When I went to her place to plead with her to meet with you, I saw the Alpha there. He kept giving lame excuses, but it was so obvious that they had something together."

I swallowed hard and looked down, feeling embarrassed as if I were the one caught. "What am I going to do now? My life is in ruins. I don't know where to start."

Just then, the jailer walked up to me. "Come," she said. "You're needed in the prison yard."

"Prison yard?" Thelma asked, standing up as I was being led away. "Why is she needed there?"

The jailer ignored her and took me to the vast yard, where more women around my age were brought in. I looked around in confusion, trying to understand what was happening. My heart skipped a beat, and my eyes widened when I saw Christopher walk in.

"What's he doing here?" I whispered to myself.

Just then, a much more masculine and handsome man appeared behind him. Some women started talking about the attractive, hot stranger, and I listened closely to pick up whatever they were saying.

"Isn't that Alpha Lorenzo of the Night City Pack?" one of the ladies asked.

"Wow, you're right! What's he doing in a small pack like this, though?" another questioned.

"Well, I heard he wanted to buy a slave, but since the slaves were all sold out to the men of the neighboring pack, he decided to select a female prisoner instead," she explained.

"But why does he want to buy a slave?" I asked. The three ladies shot me a hard glare, and I quickly averted my gaze. So much for being curious.

"I hope he picks me," one of them said, giggling.

I scoffed. Did they even know what they would face in the city with him? Somehow, I wished it was me he would pick, even if it wasn't possible. That way, I might be saved from my impending death.

"Let me see your face," I heard a deep voice echo, and my eyes fluttered open. When my gaze finally settled, it landed on the man they called Alpha Lorenzo. My lips parted, and my eyes blinked rapidly in disbelief.

Was he going to pick me?

However, he passed me by, and I scoffed, lowering my eyes. What was I even expecting? I thought. I noticed his polished shoes next to my dusty sandals again, and my eyes narrowed. Did he come back or something? I looked up and found him staring at me.

"Alpha Christopher?" he called, raising an arm.

"Yes, Alpha Lorenzo?" Christopher responded from just behind him, shooting me angry glares.

"It's her..." Alpha Lorenzo said softly. "I'll be taking her."

My jaw, along with Christopher's, dropped instantly.
