CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE

LANDON:

As I returned to reality, I took a deep breath, reminding myself that I had come a long way since those painful days of inadequacy. I was determined to continue showing my worth, not only to my parents, the council, and my pack but most importantly, to myself. Now, I didn't have to prove anything to anyone.

The atmosphere inside the jet had taken a disconcerting turn. The waffle that Vivien had clumsily spilled on Jason and me wasn't just a regular snack. My instincts screamed that something else was at play. The questions swirled in my mind as I gripped Vivien's hand, my grasp stronger than I had intended.

"What was in that waffle?" My voice came out harsh and demanding, reflecting the unease that had taken over.

Vivien, trembling and stammering, seemed to be struggling with her response. "N...nothing."

I couldn't accept that vague answer. The feeling of impending danger gnawed at me. "Where did you find it? Who gave it to you?"

Jason's voice erupted with anger, "Stop it!" he
