IRENE

"Where the hell am I?" I whispered, jerking upright.

My heart pounded against my ribs as I looked around, wild-eyed.

The last thing I could remember was a sudden blanket of darkness.

Now, I was in a bright and cozy room. It was nothing like the nightmare I had expected.

There was a large bed with fluffy white sheets, a small bookshelf and soft rug.

On top of the nightstand was a little lamp with a golden base.

I swung my legs off the bed and stood up fast. My head was spinning for a second and I grabbed the bedpost for balance.

I was breathing so hard.

"What is this place?" I muttered under my breath, walking to the door.

I tried to push it open yet it was locked.

That was strange.

I twisted the knob harder and I kicked it forcefully.

Yet, Nothing. It didn’t budge. I leaned my forehead against it, closing my eyes for a second.

"Okay, Irene. Stay calm. Stay calm. Kael wouldn’t hurt you," I whispered, forcing the words out like a prayer. "He’s not like the others. He’s good

Kael leaned against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest, watching me like I was something pathetic. "You think this is about us?" he asked sharply. "You are scared. You don’t know how to handle your feelings. That’s why you’re doing this. You’re acting out of desperation."He laughed, shaking his head. "Feelings?""You love me," I said quickly. Why was I being so calm about it?"I’m not staying here to rot, Kael,” I ranted out and unfortunately, I couldn't stop myself from saying it. Kael sat by the door with one of his legs stretched out. His arms were also crossed and he could clearly see that I meant all that I said. “You heard me, Kael. I said you can't keep me here. I'm not a fool! Irene's POV "You have to hurry Irene!" The twigs snapped rapidly under my legs with each movement, but I still didn't feel fast enough. We were the only wolves living in a cottage deep in the woods. I always told Dad that we had to move into the city and stay with the other pack members but he never listened."Come on Dad, the wood is so isolated. Whenever I head to the city, people call me a freak, and I don't blame them at all. I mean, we live in the goddamn woods!" I would say."A werewolf should live in their territory, not outside," He would reply. Now here I was, almost breathless from running for miles. I couldn't stop to catch my breath because I was worried—and for the first time in years, I was... Scared.Familiar faces stared at me as light shone brightly on my face at the entrance to the house, the looks on their faces horrifying, but it couldn't be compared to Silas's, my little brother. He looked like he had seen something worse than a ghost.Without talking to anyone,

Irene's POV"You're kidding, right?" I asked, ignoring the pain in my chest as I tried to steady myself. "Tell me you are, Peris," I pleaded. But instead, he looked away, avoiding my gaze. I tried to grab his hand, but he pushed mine away. He turned to me. "It's not you, Irene... It's just that... My family can't have anything to do with yours," He said and then his eyes darkened. "I mean, your Dad is a traitor—""—You know that's not true!" I yelled, trying to defend my father. "My Dad would never do that."Peris chuckled. "Oh really... Then tell me why he is lying on the floor of your living room with his body torn to pieces like a worthless—" Before he could complete the words, someone spun him around and landed a punch on his face, sending him to the ground."Don't you dare talk about my Dad like that again, especially not in front of my sister!" Silas growled. Peris scoffed as he stood up. He wiped the blood that spilled out the corner of his busted lips. "I can see the little

Irene's POV "You cannot do that!" Silas yelled out as he stood up from his seat. All of a sudden the Alpha Lucian growled, "KEEP QUIET BOY!"A chill ran down my spine, not because of the tone of the Alpha's voice, but because of what it did to my brother. I watched as Silas fell to the ground, crying out in pain as he held his throat. His face turned white as tears rolled down his eyes.Alpha Lucian had used his commanding power on him. It was one of the powers an Alpha could use on his Pack members. Right now, he had used it to force Silas to be quiet."Stop it!" I screamed as I crouched down next to my brother, trying to stop his pain."You and brother must have forgotten a few things because you both spent all your life living in a cottage outside the Pack House," Alpha Lucian said. His face held no emotion and his voice sounded calm. It was like he didn't care that Silas was in pain."Listen, Irene, you need to have a reality check," He continued. "I am the Alpha of this Pack, an

Irene's POV I felt a tear prick the corners of my eyes, but I didn't let it fall. I had to be strong."Do you understand me, girl?" Rose asked, her brown eyes searching mine I swallowed hard as I nodded. She smiled. "That's it, girl. I've watched you for these past few weeks. You are stronger than you think you are, so you shouldn't let them bring you down."She was right. I had been through a lot worse. I was left alone to pick up the remains of my father. I couldn't let Silas see, so I sent him on an errand while I had our living room cleaned up.I still remembered what it felt like. The pain I felt as I gathered up Dad's body parts. I picked up his hands, his legs, and then his torso. But what hurt more was picking up his head. It had been clawed off of his body.I raised my head, holding back the tears that tried to fall. "You are strong, Irene, don't let them see your weak side. You can't let them think you are weak," I muttered to myself."That's the spirit," Rose said. "Now

IreneMy heart hammered wildly against my chest as the words left Luke's mouth. His words kept echoing in my head like a raging storm. I could not believe all of these were happening. It felt like a dream. "Thanks for taking the traitor's daughter off my hands."I stared at Alpha Lucian, unable to process what I had just heard. Was this a joke? Indeed, there was some mistake. I was being mated to my father’s murderer like it was something normal. “Come on, Irene. You have to snap out of your illusion,” I said to myself, and I almost hit my palm against my face countless times. I watched as Lucian folded the document and tucked it into his jacket. He did all that with a calmness that infuriated me. When he was done, he turned to Luke and gave him a side-eye. “Pack up everything concerning the auction and send everyone home. It’s over,” he ordered and in return, Luke gave him a sharp nod. “As you wish, Alpha.” He glanced at me briefly, and a mischievous sneer curled on his lips b

IreneTheir voices faded, and I could barely hear a thing since they walked away, leaving me at the far end of the empty room. So many things were going through my mind, and my stomach kept rumbling because I felt uneasy. What could they be discussing? I didn’t trust Lucian, and neither could I trust his counterpart. Chris’s subtle glances in my direction had not gone unnoticed by me. From how he looked at me when he came to call Lucian out, I could tell they had something up their sleeves.I was so convinced that they might definitely be discussing me. “Oh, Holy heavens! What kind of mess have I found myself in? How can I get out of this alive?” I asked myself as I paced around the room with a finger in my mouth. I bit it hard until the pain became unbearable. I contemplated going after them for a moment, but I stopped myself as Rose’s words echoed in my mind. “Use your brain, Irene. Use your body if you have to and extract evidence but never let them see you coming.”I took a

IRENE"Are we almost there?" I asked, forcing a small laugh to hide the unease rising inside me.We had been going round different roads but we were yet to arrive at our destination. Kale must have noticed how uncomfortable I was but he didn't seem to mind. I contemplated within me if I should ask him what was going on again but it was clear that he ignored me the first time. I tried to sit up and straighten my back. I let out a loud cough and held my face. “Can you please answer me? This is becoming really creepy and I'm not comfortable,” I said, letting the cat out of the back. Kael just smiled and handed me a cold bottle of water. I hesitated for a second before taking it. Did he just dismiss what I just said? Or did he translate what I meant into being tasty?Kael was being so unpredictable and it was alarming. I stared at the cold bottle of water and it was tempting. My throat was dry anyway and with a shrug, I twisted the cap open and drank greedily."Thanks," I said, wip

IRENE"You deserve to know the truth, Irene," Kael said to me when he decided to have a word with me. I wasn't expecting something from Kael but I had to pay attention to what he had to say since we had been fighting a lot recently. “Is anything the problem, Kael?” I asked, looking around. I also tried to search to get any clue about what he meant by that. But, I got nothing. I wasn’t expecting him to start talking like that. I thought he would throw another insult or maybe brag again. But instead, he stood there, staring at me like he actually cared. It was surprising and at the same time, I was taken aback. "What truth are you talking about?" I asked, folding my arms. "More lies? It what? Let me put it straight to you. I can't be deceived now. I'm wiser. I'm saying this if you ever thought that you were playing with a fool.""No! No lies. I'm done doing all of that. You deserve to know everything that has been going on. "I raised a brow, feeling skeptical. Why did he sound lik

Irene Earlier today, I stormed out of Lucien's presence out of anger. I couldn't believe he was making me feel less than myself. Now, I was fighting with myself and before I could get to where I was headed, I heard some hushed voices. I recognised one of the voices of the person talking as Kael and it was quite surprising how he got here before me. He was such a busy man with a loud mouth, wasn't he?“He’s not going to listen. We will take him, whether he likes it or not,” Kael said and his voice was as sharp as a blade. He couldn't even try to talk a little lower. I froze and came to a stop immediately I heard him speak. My heart pounded so hard that I could barely hear Justin’s reply.“Are you sure about this?” Justin asked, his voice tight. “Lucien will kill us if we act without telling him. This is not something that we should risk.”Kael chuckled darkly and I could tell that he was the mastermind behind this. “Lucien doesn’t need to know. Why would this be his business? If

LucienIrrespective of the fact that I wanted to know what exactly was going on between the both of them. I was very mad that Irene had the guts to talk to someone I regarded as my enemy. I couldn't wrap my head around what was happening. Why didn't I ask her this in the first place instead of trying to know why they were about bringing down the place?"You must be kidding me, Irene! Come to think of it. This is who you choose to talk to? Him? And why the hell are you back after telling everyone that you have nothing to do with me. You literally stressed the hell out of me as I looked for you," I asked and the moment the words flew out of my mouth, I regretted the tone I used in talking to her but I didn’t care. The sight of Irene standing there, exchanging words with Kael of all people boiled my blood in a way I couldn’t explain. She turned slowly, calmly, too calmly, like my rage didn’t matter to her. “Why are you talking to me about choices, Lucien? Haven't you made worse ones?

Irene"You can go to hell, Kael. And take your arrogance with you.”I meant every single word. I was unable to deal with the mess he had brought upon me. I wasn’t even trembling when I said all that. I wasn't scared this time. I wasn’t afraid. I had held back for too long. I had allowed too many people to walk over me like I was some welcome mat in a dirty place. But not anymore. I won't let anyone step on me because they thought I was easy to override. I have been tolerating a lot of nonsense to begin with but, now. It's over! I'm not doing any of that. I wasn’t the girl who used to bite her tongue to make sure that peace returned to a place. If there was not going to be war then so be it. Let them be a fucking war then! I would gladly heat it up and partake in it. Kael’s eyes narrowed like he couldn’t believe that I was speaking to him that way.He couldn't believe that there would be a switch up any time soon. "You think I care about your partial ownership of whatever deal

Irene’s POV"Are you seriously trying to play me, Kael? Again?" I asked and my voice came out low and bitter. I placed my hands on my waist and stepped forward with my eyes locked on him like I was about to throw a dagger through his chest. He had to tell me the truth if that was the case. With the way things were going, I guess he wanted to play with my emotions and end up making me look like a fool. He complained countless times of Silas making him feel less of himself but he was doing the same to me. He was making me question my sanity. “I asked a question, Kael. I don't like the fact that instead of answering me, you stand there laughing at yourself. What do you take me for?” I thundered, shooting an angry glare at him. I wasn’t going to let him twist me around his finger like I was some confused and clueless child. He chuckled and that irritating smirk crawled up his lips. It was a pity that he wasn't taking this as seriously as I thought he would. “Irene, calm down. I’m
