Irene's POV
I felt a tear prick the corners of my eyes, but I didn't let it fall. I had to be strong.
"Do you understand me, girl?" Rose asked, her brown eyes searching mine
I swallowed hard as I nodded.
She smiled. "That's it, girl. I've watched you for these past few weeks. You are stronger than you think you are, so you shouldn't let them bring you down."
She was right. I had been through a lot worse. I was left alone to pick up the remains of my father. I couldn't let Silas see, so I sent him on an errand while I had our living room cleaned up.
I still remembered what it felt like. The pain I felt as I gathered up Dad's body parts. I picked up his hands, his legs, and then his torso. But what hurt more was picking up his head. It had been clawed off of his body.
I raised my head, holding back the tears that tried to fall. "You are strong, Irene, don't let them see your weak side. You can't let them think you are weak," I muttered to myself.
"That's the spirit," Rose said. "Now remember, keep your shoulders straight, your head held high, no slouching, and knock them off with a smile. Got it?" She instructed.
"Yes Ma'am," I nodded.
Just then, the Auction Master, Luke, walked into the room. As always, he didn't bother to knock.
"Are you done?" He asked.
Rose laughed as she spun me so I could face him. "Yes, she is, and she is ready to find her Mate."
Luke looked at me from head to toe, definitely intrigued by how I looked. But he shook it off and looked away.
"Well, you better pray to the Moon Goddess to help you out. This is your last day here, and you can either walk out alone or side by side with your new Mate."
Rose squeezed my arm as she gave me a reassuring look. She didn't need to speak for me to know what she had to say. "Don't let him sway your confidence with his words, girl. You've got what it takes, just go out there and prove them wrong."
With a smile on my face, I nodded.
I followed Luke out of the dressing room. I replayed Rose's instructions in my head, making sure to keep to every single one of them as I was led to the stage. But when I stepped on the podium, the confidence I had built dissipated.
The Auction room was completely empty.
"I don't... I don't understand... Where is everyone?" I asked as I turned to Luke.
"Umm, well, hopefully they'll come," He replied in a calm tone as he walked down the stage stairs.
My mouth went agape. "What do you mean by 'hopefully?! Why would you bring me here if no one was here to see—"
"—Listen little girl! You might have gotten your wolf and had once had a Mate, but you are still as clueless as ever!" He yelled as he turned to me, cutting me off. "What makes you think anyone was and would be interested in you?! The only reason those men showed up was to stare at your pretty body and pretty face. Just like your ex-mate, no one wants to be involved with the family of a traitor."
As he walked away, my legs went wobbly, and I fell to the ground, ripping my dress.
Tears spilled onto my cheeks. I tried to hold them in longer, but I couldn't. I couldn't at all.
Nothing was going the right way. Nothing was working out for me.
So many thoughts ran through my head. Would I be able to see Silas again? Where exactly was he? Who was taking care of me? I missed him so much!
I couldn't help but blame myself for everything. Dad had told me that I didn't have to work and that he could take care of Silas and me, but I refused to listen. I still went on to get a job far from the cottage.
I should have been there when the Alpha's guards attacked. I was strong enough, so I would've been able to put up a fight. Dad would have been safe, and none of this would've been happening.
Minutes on the floor and in tears turned to hours. There was nothing I could do but cry.
All of a sudden someone tapped me. I looked up to find Luke staring at me. "Go get yourself cleaned up, you have an offer."
***
In my new dress, I walked towards the backstage. Luke had to prepare the documents, so he asked me to go on my own.
I couldn't help but think who the Male wolf who wanted me was.
I felt fear creeping in.
Why would he want to have anything to do with the daughter of a traitor?
But I shook off the feeling. At least I had a chance to see Silas. I would go home with anyone just so I could see him.
When I got backstage, I frowned.
Alpha Lucian was there, leaning against a wall. When he saw me, he straightened up.
I couldn't help but chuckle. "You know, Alpha Lucian, I didn't think you would bother yourself with such things," I said.
He raised a brow at me, but he didn't say a word.
"Are you here to make sure I don't run off after being sold for just a few bucks?" I teased, a smile playing at the corners of my lips.
I tried to touch his chest, but he held my hand and pushed it away.
I couldn't help but laugh.
"Why are you trying to act like a man of integrity," I said to him, my tone hardening. "After framing and killing someone innocent."
His face finally reflected something. He looked confused. "What are you talking about?" He asked.
Now we were on to something. "You think I don't know what you did to my Dad? I overheard you and your Beta talking about it. You had your dogs rip him apart when you knew he was innocent!"
His eyes widened at first, then his indifferent expression crept in back. He leaned back on the wall, not affected by what I said.
"Don't conclude when you don't have the full details of what happened," He said as he folded his arms in front of him and closed his eyes. "You are just a kid, so you won't understand anything."
His words tore through me like a sword. How could he say it that way?! How could he not feel remorseful for killing someone who didn't do anything wrong and was also a member of his Pack?
I couldn't take it anymore. I looked around, searching for something to use and end him. Then I found it, the perfect weapon—a sharp hairpin lying in a corner.
I picked it up.
I was going to make him pay for hurting my family.
Just as I was about to head towards him, Luke's voice made me stop in my tracks.
"It seems things are going well here," He said as he walked towards Alpha Lucian.
The Alpha straightened up, his stoic look still in place.
Luke handed him a document.
"Thanks for taking the Traitor's daughter," He said and looked at me. "Off my hands.”
IreneMy heart hammered wildly against my chest as the words left Luke's mouth. His words kept echoing in my head like a raging storm. I could not believe all of these were happening. It felt like a dream. "Thanks for taking the traitor's daughter off my hands."I stared at Alpha Lucian, unable to process what I had just heard. Was this a joke? Indeed, there was some mistake. I was being mated to my father’s murderer like it was something normal. “Come on, Irene. You have to snap out of your illusion,” I said to myself, and I almost hit my palm against my face countless times. I watched as Lucian folded the document and tucked it into his jacket. He did all that with a calmness that infuriated me. When he was done, he turned to Luke and gave him a side-eye. “Pack up everything concerning the auction and send everyone home. It’s over,” he ordered and in return, Luke gave him a sharp nod. “As you wish, Alpha.” He glanced at me briefly, and a mischievous sneer curled on his lips b
IreneTheir voices faded, and I could barely hear a thing since they walked away, leaving me at the far end of the empty room. So many things were going through my mind, and my stomach kept rumbling because I felt uneasy. What could they be discussing? I didn’t trust Lucian, and neither could I trust his counterpart. Chris’s subtle glances in my direction had not gone unnoticed by me. From how he looked at me when he came to call Lucian out, I could tell they had something up their sleeves.I was so convinced that they might definitely be discussing me. “Oh, Holy heavens! What kind of mess have I found myself in? How can I get out of this alive?” I asked myself as I paced around the room with a finger in my mouth. I bit it hard until the pain became unbearable. I contemplated going after them for a moment, but I stopped myself as Rose’s words echoed in my mind. “Use your brain, Irene. Use your body if you have to and extract evidence but never let them see you coming.”I took a
Irene “And you!” Alpha Lucian yelled, pointing in my direction, and my legs shook severely. What does this devil want from me this time? Hasn't he taken enough from me?“Follow me!” he commanded, but fear didn't let me protest or utter a word. I followed him sheepishly, and he led me to his room. He turned to me as though he wanted to say something, but he only scoffed and tilted his head slowly. “Sorry?” I asked, confused about what to do, and he clearly ignored me. Instead, the door to his room creaked open, and I stepped inside hesitantly. My heart raced as my eyes moved from one end of the room to the other as I took note of the rather cold space. The room was massive, adorned with dark furniture and dark heavy curtains blocking most of the light. It felt as unwelcoming as the man who owned it. What was I doing here in his room? I wish I could have asked him, but my lips were sealed. Alpha Lucian followed me from behind, and I could hear the sound of his heavy footsteps.
Lucian“Didn't I tell you to go to bed, young lady?” I asked when she was up on her feet again. “I don't want to. You can't force me to do what I do not want to do. I'm not sleeping,” she answered, and I rubbed the back of my head out of surprise. The girl was stubborn. There were no two ways about that. I paced the long length of my room, gripping my hair in frustration. Irene’s defiance was maddening. Every time she opened her mouth, it was to challenge and provoke me. It was as if she didn’t care about the consequences of her actions. From the look of things, she didn’t fear me. Not even a bit. I didn’t understand it. Does she not realise how easy it would be for me to end her? To silence her forever without a second thought?Does she think I could not deal with her how I wanted to? I could easily make her pay for her sins and, at the same time, make her beg for mercy. It's just a matter of me changing how I deal with her. My wolf stirred restlessly within me, growling in a
Irene’s POV“Seriously?” I blurted out immediately the door shut behind Lucian, and the sound echoed in the room. My chest heaved heavily with anger and frustration. Lucian must have seen me as a threat, or rather, if not a threat; he must have seen me as someone he could mess with. He thought he could control me, dictate my every move like I was some obedient little pet?I didn't blame him. I blame myself for being in this situation where he could order me around. My eyes rested on different objects in the room, and I sighed in frustration. Did he expect me to sit still and do nothing? The room was already feeling so suffocating. I couldn’t sit still any longer. With the Alpha gone, this might be my only chance to escape.“Remember the consequences of your action. If you escape, he will do something worse to your brother,” a voice said within me, and I shut it up immediately.“Oh, shut up!” I yelled. “You think I would be scared by such a thing? I laugh in the face of danger. I do
Lucian’s POV“Are you sure we are not wasting our time here, Lucian?” Chris asked me, and I placed my finger on my lips, asking him to shut it. I needed to concentrate. Yes, we haven't found out exactly what was happening, but I felt that something was not right. We kept pushing ourselves into the deepest part of the forest, and it became quieter and cold. My wolf became so restless, and he began pacing inside of me. I could tell he could sense something too, his instincts sharp and alert. That growl and loud noise earlier was not from one of my own. It was from an intruder. I knew my pack too well, and this was not a sound I could ignore.Beside me, Chris kept moving with ease, and he looked calm. "Lucian," he said again, breaking the silence between us. "We have been out here for over an hour. If there was a threat, we would have found it by now."I didn’t respond to him. Instead, I kept my eyes forward. I didn't want to lose focus, and he did everything possible to divert my
Irene’s POVI knew I could not sleep. Not when I was in this state. I lay on the bed and pretended to be asleep, though my heart was hammering fiercely against my ribcage.Thank Goodness. Alpha Lucian was not back yet to give me a headache. I ransacked a drawer he had left open but could not find anything reasonable. “Well, I will give it to him. He's that smart. He is!” I said to myself, hitting the bed continuously with my palm. As I lay there, all to myself. I heard the sound of footsteps coming towards my direction. I knew those footsteps were his before I saw him. The door creaked open, and Alpha Lucian stepped in. His dark energy filled the room, almost suffocating me, but I didn’t move. I kept on taking shallow breaths as I pretended to be asleep. “I know you are awake, Irene. Stop the pretence! ” he blurted out, and his deep voice cut through the silence, making goosebumps appear all over my skin.I stayed still for a moment longer, hoping he would let it go and leave
Lucian’s POV I had told them to throw the girl into the dungeon but I had other plans concerning that. I found myself in the dungeon in no time and the air in the dungeon was damp and hot. All I could perceive was a metallic scent which filled the air. In this dungeon, many people have died in there and so many people were on their way to their graves. No one dared me and went scot free. I always had a place for each of them and when I meant business dealing with them, I always did. As I walked into the dungeon, my shoes echoed against the cold stone floor as I descended the staircase. The guards at the entrance straightened as I approached and they all bowed down the moment then saw me. Although, they respected my presence. Their faces were also filled with confusion. I knew that they must be wondering why I was here by this time of the day. They were not used to me visiting the dungeons unless there was a reason, today, there was one.The rogue twelve year old girl lay curl
Lucien“You really think I did all of this to hurt you?” I asked, frustration clawing at the back of my throat.I should have let her be but guilt and regret were both threatening to swallow me whole. I had to make her understand. I had to explain everything but I was starting to realize that nothing I said would change how she saw me now.Irene stared blankly, but I could see the pain and anger in her eyes. All these emotions were in her eyes and stood there in front of me. While we stood there, I noticed that there was something cold in the air between us now. This was a feeling that had not been there before..She didn’t say anything for a long time. And then, as if the words had been boiling inside her for too long, she opened her mouth.“You did it for power. You can't convince me otherwise that you did it for your own damn selfish reasons.”My eyes bulged out and my lips fell open. I wanted to shout back at her and tell her that she was wrong, that she didn’t understand anyt
Lucien“You make me sick,” Irene said after everything. But I was not surprised she said that to me after all the words we had exchanged She was only triggered by me giving her space.Irene’s voice was cold, and it cut through the air like a sharp blade that aimed straight for my throat. It shouldn’t have affected me. It shouldn’t have sunk under my skin the way it did, but it did.I didn't have any control over that.I held my jaw tight, forcing down the fire that burned the tip of my tongue.I didn't have much patience left. I was already losing all that was in me.I muttered, “Is that so? Now, I suddenly make you sick?” crossing my arms over my chest. She scoffed, shaking her head as if she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.“You had all the power in the world to stop this, but you let it happen. You let them kill my father. And now you expect me to just… accept everything? You must be out of your mind!” she yelled at me, and the accusation stung me hard.A bee sting would hav
IreneI didn’t know when I suddenly switched. The other minute, I was already saying that I was going to be Lucien’s spy to help bring down Malcolm.I guessed I said all of that because Malcolm was the one who did all of these to hurt me and my family. He was the one who killed my father, making me pass through this pain and stress that I was going through now.I didn’t need anyone to tell me anything. I needed to help myself and also help get the revenge that I sought after. But after countless thoughts, I had a change of mind instantly. It was as though I got a click that all these thoughts were a lie.I shouldn’t trust anything that Lucien said."You are lying," I blurted out. I didn’t mean to say it out loud, but the words slipped before I could stop them.I was not to blame for that. Me accusing Lucien of lying didn’t mean that I had proof that he was lying. It was just that everything he said did not align with my thought process."I’m not. How could you suddenly call me a liar
Lucien I couldn't run in circles anymore. I had to tell her the truth."They want me dead, Irene," I informed her, making sure she heard me properly.Irene’s face twisted in confusion, and she readjusted her dress on her body, moving closer to the table beside her."I'm sorry. I swear, I don't understand what you mean by that," she answered, and I knew she was only playing me around. I was going to tell her everything anyway. I had already made up my mind."Alright. I will explain. I said the Council…" I started, bringing my voice low. "They have been plotting this for months and maybe years. They want me out of the way so they can replace me with Chris. They want to dethrone me," I explained, and Irene blinked, shaking her head. She couldn't believe what she was hearing, but it was the truth."They want to replace you with Chris? Your Beta?" she asked, and I nodded. Was there anyone else named Chris that she knew? I was talking about the one who followed me around, claiming he had m
IreneThat was not the end. In fact, whatever issue we both had continued, and it made me want to talk more to him.“Is there anything you are expecting me to say, Irene? I need to know because you keep calling me back like you're forgetting something,” he said, and I nodded. He was right. I was forgetting something, and that was because of him."If you want me to leave, then I will have to go back on my word. I would have to tell everyone, and I don't fucking care what you have to say that would stop me,” I revealed to him, and my voice rang through the room. My voice was so sharp that even a deaf person could hear me.Lucien stiffened at the sound of my voice, and his eyes flickered with shock, anger, maybe even fear.I didn’t care much about that because I had long told him all I had to say."You wouldn’t do such a thing. Stop switching up immediately just because I said you can leave if you want. Don't you crave freedom again?” he asked, and I laughed. He was making sense, and he
Irene"You are still in pain?" I asked as I saw Lucien writhing in pain.Lucien barely reacted to my words and blatantly ignored me as if I was talking to myself. That was quite rude. I was only showing that I cared about him, and now he was pretending as if no one did.Fine! If that was what he wanted. Whatever suited him then.I tried to ignore him, but I couldn't. My conscience was pricking at me, and I had to attend to him."Lucien. Are you still hurting?" I asked again, this time my voice was louder, and his back was turned.I had expected to see him healing by now. I expected him to be stronger and sharper, the way he always was.But he looked weaker than before. He looked like something was slowly eating him inside, causing him to look so pale.I stepped closer to him with my hands akimbo. I didn't like the fact that I was kept on the edge."Lucien, please talk to me. I have been here for the past few minutes asking you some questions, yet all you do is ignore me," I complained
IreneI was already tired of asking numerous questions without getting answers.Nothing seemed to be working for me anymore, and I had given up. It was clear that no one cared, but I was still doing everything I could to get the truth.I was only fooling myself in the long run."Maybe you are just being foolish!"The harsh thought came to me, unbidden and as sharp as a dagger.I had gone through a lot in the few days, and with what I was thinking, I was not going to get over this torture anytime soon.I sat on the edge of the bed, my arms wrapped around myself and my head lowered. My heart was heavy with frustration curling in my chest like a restless beast.Lucien shut me out. Again!I couldn't count the number of times he did that to me, and now, I was left to my hopeless self.No matter how much I pushed, no matter how many questions I asked, he refused to give me the answers I needed."It is your father’s wish."That was all he would say over and over again. As if that was suppose
IreneWhy the hell was the document a secret? This was not making any single sense to me."You knew,” I thundered and the words left my lips as they crashed into his ears.Lucien stood frozen, watching me. Maybe he didn't know what to say but I could only tell that he was faking everything. He was pretending to be sad as I accused him of everything. He was aware of how seeing this was towards me.He knew I felt bad just because of what I saw and all he could do was to stand there and say nothing?Come on, Lucien. He needed to do better, and I am not going to leave without a fucking explanation.I took a shaky breath, gripping the document tighter in my trembling hands."You knew my father wasn’t guilty,” My voice shook but I forced myself to keep speaking because I was going to demand answers from this already dumb man. "You had proof, Lucien. You had Proof that could have saved him, and you did nothing. Why are you so heartless?”I asked, pouring out my heart to him.I was beginning t
IreneAfter dealing with Silas’ issues, I found myself in Lucien’s room while he was out.I missed that cocky bastard. I found myself looking for things in his room. I didn’t know what exactly I was looking for, but I kept searching."What else are you hiding from me, Lucien?" I asked, tracing my fingers over the leather-bound journal on his desk.I knew I shouldn’t be doing this. But the moment I saw my father’s name written on the edge of a page, I had every reason to.I felt guilty for a while because I was intruding on his privacy, but…I wasn’t going to apologize.I had been waiting for answers but had found none, and he had also refused to talk to me about it.His handwriting was bold and easy to read, and I pierced my eyes through every word."The pack deserves better.""I will do anything to protect them, even if it means making impossible choices.""Irene... if she ever knew the truth..."I sucked in a sharp breath, and my heart fell. This was all written by Lucien, and it wa
