ALPHA KING XALEN
~<>~
I don't know.
I don't know how to exist in a world where my mate doesn't. A world without my Laura.
I have spent the last five days beside her motionless body and even in that state she managed to look beautiful. She managed to capture my heart like we were teenagers again. How I wished she would open her eyes and tell me, “It’s a joke, Xalen. How can I die and leave you and the kids?”
But today, I had to put her to rest.
I had to bury her according to tradition so she could find peace in the afterlife.
My heart was heavier than my bulky body and breathing felt like a crime because Laura wasn’t breathing.
She was six feet under the ground we used to walk as the King and Queen of the werewolf realm–
“Come forward and present your gifts.” My trusted Beta, Evan, voiced, calling on the visiting Alphas and leaders of the numerous packs under my jurisdiction.
The funeral has ended as far as I was concerned. I had buried Luara and I don’t understand why these people are still around. Heck, I don’t understand why they all came to my pack. None of them knew Laura the way I did and they couldn’t even grieve her the way I would do.
Bunch of fake ass people!
My eyes shifted from one to another as I thought about the possibility of one of them being Laura’s killer.
Someone killed my mate.
She didn’t die a natural death.
I refuse to believe that she would just die and leave me like that–
“You can try to stop growling, Alpha King. You are scaring them shitless.” I heard my advisor’s voice, noticing how shaky everyone in the hall was even though the hall was big enough to distance me from them. “They are here to pay respect to our late Queen. Let’s do well to perform the rituals correctly.”
I growled at my advisor as she used the word ‘Late’ to describe my Laura. All her life, she had been punctual… until now.
“Be thankful you are my uncle.” I gritted at my advisor who was also the only family I had left, aside from my kids. “No one tells me what to do.”
Except Laura and now that she was gone, no one could fit in her shoe.
My uncle, Elder Calvin tilted his head in respect, moving away from my throne where I was sitting with a straight face. The leaders of packs began to come forward and they all presented stupid gifts to pay respect to my Laura.
“What am I supposed to do with these items that you have been presenting!” I found myself barking as the tenth Alpha stepped forward and presented gold bars to me. “Am I supposed to replace my mate, your Queen with these?”
All heads were bowed and their fear tickled my nostrils.
Look at them!
Cowards!
One of them assassinated my mate cowardly.
“There’s no evidence to back that claim, Xalen. Why can’t we just accept that Laura died instead of tainting her memories with these–” My wolf, Theo, started with a whimper.
But I cut him off before he could say another word, “Enough!”
For the past week of Laura’s absence, Theo and I have been like this. We couldn’t agree on anything and I knew it was only a matter of time before this began to affect the realm or above all, my immediate family– my kids.
However, my wolf didn’t stop talking. In fact, he snarled at me, “Laura spent her life trying to make you relatable but you are throwing it all away. Is this how you honor her? By returning to your old days?”
He meant our old days because I couldn’t recall a time in the past when I was cruel and Theo wasn’t.
Laura changed us and now to solve the mystery behind her sudden death, I will gladly become the cruel Alpha King again.
“If you have nothing reasonable to present, go back to your pack and mourn your Queen for the next ninety days!” I announced to the crowd as I jolted off my throne, trying hard not to look at the empty throne beside mine.
To my surprise, a strange voice broke through the pin-drop silence in the hall as a lanky-looking man walked forward, “Forgive us, My King. We have nothing that can replace our beloved Queen but we also want to be a part of the rituals.”
“And you are?” I blurted, not interested in his flattering talks.
“I’m Alpha Jett of the crescent Moon Pack, My King. Accept my condolences and gift even though they aren't worthy.” I received an answer as he bowed to me.
Theo got to me at that moment when he said, “Just hear him out, even if Laura was killed, we need allies not more enemies. More enemies would mean more loved ones would die and who would be the next person? Our girls or our son?”
My breath hitched.
Sophia was the first girl Laura and I had and even though she is now five years old, she remains my little girl. Asher, my son, and second child was a mini version of me and I adored him.
Lastly, Jodie, who is just two months old and despite the way I feel about how her birth could be the reason Laura had to die, I still wouldn’t want her to be harmed.
“Present your offerings,” I said, forcing myself to sound less terrifying.
The Alpha’s eyes glinted with happiness as he signaled to his men to bring in his offerings.
Crescent Moon Pack… the last time I heard about them, they had a different Alpha who I assumed was the father to this current young Alpha–
“Here are the offerings, my King. I brought living offerings.” Alpha Jett’s voice cut my thought short and my attention shifted to the young women who were kneeling before me in nothing but rags.
Laura would hate the sight of them not because they were dirty but because she hated the idea of keeping slaves.
Alpha Jett made the mistake of confirming my suspicion when he uttered, “These slaves will serve you till they–”
“If you value having your head on your neck and not on a spike you will hold your tongue.” I barked those words, losing control as Theo’s anger collided with mine.
I was about to make the lanky Alpha pay for ruining my mate’s funeral by bringing slaves into my pack but the loud cries of no one else but my two-month-old daughter hit my eardrums and my world froze.
Jodie’s nanny ran forward, stuttering, “I have done everything to make her stop, My King, but she won’t stop wailing. It’s been hours of endless crying and–”
“Let me help with that.” An unfamiliar, soft, lush, and confident voice broke out and from within Alpha Jett’s slaves, a young girl walked out and stretched her dirty hands to my child… as if she had a death wish.
No one but nannies I handpick can touch my kids, yet this girl took Jodie from her nanny without looking at me.
“Shush, baby. It’s all right now.” The young girl whispered to my child, rocking her slowly.
Within a twinkle of an eye, Jodie’s wails turned into soft snores.
The murmur in the hall was low but the smell of shock was prominent. However, nothing was as shocking as the intoxifying feeling that sprung out of me as the young girl’s soft green eyes met my pitch-black eyes.
I inhaled sharply, my soul ripping past the sadness that had taken over me since Laura’s death and one word tried to force its way past my seal-tight lips…
“Mate…”
I held it back but Theo still voiced it in my head.
Quickly, I got over the shock and found myself chuckling at the moon goddess’s sick joke even though rage was bubbling within me.
Who finds a second chance mate at his late mate’s funeral?
“Who do you think you are?” I seethed after a minute of dark chuckling, all hint of humor disappearing in an instant. “Answer me, slave! Who the fuck are you?”
I snatched my daughter from her, hissing like a venomous snake.
HAYLEE~~Fuck me!What the fuck was I thinking? No. I didn’t think when I heard that little child crying. My stupid brain just reacted to her and as I have always done with kids, I reached for her and offered comfort because no one offered that to me when I was growing up with an abusive father and a mean sister. And now that I was standing before the Alpha King, my heart was about to beat its way out of my chest. My body shook with fear as cold shivers traveled down my spine. There was something about his dark eyes that–“Don’t make me repeat myself?” His voice was cold, laced with anger that no one deserves, not even a criminal.I took my eyes off him, fighting the uneasiness my wolf was feeding my mind with. I said slowly, “I’m Haylee from–’ “Silence!” He snapped at me, causing me to jump away from him. If my mind wasn't shaky at the moment, I would have wondered why he asked me a question only to shut me up when I gathered enough courage to respond. However, I could only thin
HAYLEE~~“How dare you!” the hostile voice pierced my eardrums before an icy feeling cut through my skin, sending shivers down my spine. My eyes flew open and I jolted to my feet even though my brain wasn’t fully awake. I wobbled, my body shivering as I felt another icy feeling. I was drenched. I was soaked. Yet, I couldn’t scream as my eyes met with Owen’s angry ones. “How dare you fall asleep, Slave?” Owen, the head of servants in the Royal Pack, snarled at me.He was holding two black buckets whose content he just poured all over me. My hair and the dark brown dress I was given three days ago were dripping. The chilly air of the night wasn’t helping my case– everything was against me.“I d-doze—” I tried to speak but my teeth chattered and I instinctively wrapped my arms around my body, “You dozed?” Owen hissed. Ever since the Alpha King stopped me from leaving the hall three days ago, my life has changed drastically. One would think the Alpha King who didn’t hide his hatred
ALPHA KING XALEN~~“Really?” I barked.Anger built up within me as the hope I was holding on to seemed to be fading every second. I had so many people around me yet I felt so alone. I once had a plan for my life and future but now? Now I was lost with no hope of finding my way. Perhaps if Laura comes back to life. She was my compass– My moral and geographical compass. “We have searched and did everything we can, My King but there’s no evidence that the Queen was murdered.” My Royal Gamma, Wyatt, repeated as he fell on his knees before my throne. “Then have the trackers tear everything down,” I growled, barely keeping my ass on my throne.Wyatt was too scared to open his mouth so Evan stepped in and said to me, “The trackers did everything, My King. The Healers also testified that they found nothing toxic in her body. It’s a natural death–” “Don’t even tell me that!” I cut my Royal Beta off. “How can that be a natural death? She gave birth to Jodie without complications and two
HAYLEE~~I was drained of every bit of energy. Yet I was still standing in the kitchen where I had been since I woke up in the wee hours of this morning. I barely slept for three hours before I got up to prep for the warriors’ breakfast. It’s like preparing a meal for every member of the Crescent Moon Pack. After preparing breakfast with little to no help from the servants who used to do these chores before I was brought into the pack as a slave, I started preparing lunch for the chiefs of the pack because they would be having a meeting in a few hours and Owen had started talking about all I had to do for the Royal Family dinner. My sight was foggy, my throat was dry and the worms in my stomach were biting me, crying to be fed. However, despite having different dishes around me, I wasn’t allowed to eat any. Owen would kill me.“Just serve yourself a plate, Haylee. We need the strength. We need to sleep.” Liya cried into my mind. The last time I shifted and let Liya have a meal o
HAYLEE~~I didn’t know which one I paid more attention to with every second that passed without a word from the Alpha King– Owen’s shaky frame or the lips that kept parting only to close again like their owner couldn’t make up his mind. “I was ju-just correcting the Slave, My King. She was dis-disrespectful and stole–” If I was going to die, I would rather die a criminal who touched the King’s child and had the audacity to appear before him as his second chance’s mate at his beloved Queen’s funeral, than be called a thief for eating one spoon of rice. With that thought in mind, I cut Owen off, sounding more confident for some weird reason and despite the Alpha King’s presence, “I didn’t steal. I haven’t eaten in three days, My King and I know I’m a slave but I need food just like everyone else. I need food and sleep to function and I haven’t been having enough. If you want me dead, chop off my head or throw me to the rogues but please do not treat me like I’m lesser than–” “Shus
ALPHA KING XALEN ~~ I hated her. The way she constantly looked at me from under her long lashes. The way she inhaled. The way she exhaled. The way she walked. The way she looked in the servants’ uniform. The way her chest rose and fell as she tried not to let her eyes wander. I hated everything about her. The bright color of her hair. Her dull green eyes had only brightened when she stared at Jodie. The small curve of her lips as she smiled down at my daughter who had stopped crying like she was in some sort of magic land and not the arms of a slave… Fuck, I hated everything. Yet, I had to bring her into my home. After all, I couldn’t just drop Jodie with her and let her take care of my daughter in the Servants’s quarters where she had obviously been suffering– “You should have let me break every bone in his body.” Theo snarled in my mind, holding a kind of anger that was new to me. He was angry because the slave was touched by another man… because she was maltreated b
HAYLEE ~~ I understood that he hated me for reasons best known to him. But to be honest, I was a victim too. I have been all my life and the way he seemed to enjoy hurting me even though I was helping his kid was making it hard for me to breathe. My chest hurt. But my head was aching more due to the forced connection he– “You don’t speak much, do you?” The young woman Alpha Xalen handed me over to, asked, her eyes on me as if she was studying me. I have learned to be careful around Servants in this Pack since they all considered me beneath them. If my head wasn’t aching, I still wouldn’t speak to the nanny to avoid getting punched– “He wasn’t always like this.” I didn’t ask her but she supplied that detail anyway. “Well, he was hostile when he was younger but became very warm when he met the Queen. Losing her sent him back to his dark days.” I get it. He was suffering. But I have been suffering all my life and he doesn’t see me being a pain in his ass or that of anyone
HAYLEE~~“You do not belong here….” The voice I heard was soft and young, and it was supposed to be innocent and friendly, but it was everything but that. It was harsh and as I opened my eyes to see the small frame boiling with obvious anger before me, My brows furrowed. I could only stare at the little girl before me as I pushed myself off the nursery floor. I must have dozed off while putting Princess Jodie to bed. I thought working with Owen was hard but having a baby who won’t let me drop her for even a minute was harder. The good part was, I wasn’t getting slapped or starved. Aside from Princess Jodie, no one was yelling at me until now. “That’s my mom’s spot. Get up and get out of my sister’s room.” The young girl literally hissed at me. Her mom’s spot? Her sister? “Princess Sophia?” I breathed, Rather than respond, she seethed just like I had seen Alpha King Xalen do, “I told you to leave my mom’s spot and get out of my sister’s room.” I was standing in a cozy corner
HAYLEE~~Tears welled up in my eyes as I exclaimed, "Leo.” Without hesitation, I threw myself into his arms, not minding the small fact that this corner was way too small to maneuver freely, but it was perfect for a long hug. I could hold him forever. Leo inhaled deeply as his hands wrapped around me, holding me tightly as he muttered, “Haylee…” His voice did the trick of assuring me that truly, this man was Leo and that he wasn’t mad at me. Also, I could hear how much he missed me just by listening to him say my name, and that broke the dam.I sobbed into his shirt, rubbing my face in his chest like I always do, and just like always, he allowed me and hushed me gently. “Hey, it’s okay, Haylee,” Leo murmured, patting my back as he carefully placed his chin over my head. I spluttered, “No, it’s not okay. I thought you were dead, Leo. I thought I would never see you again.” I pulled back a bit just to look at his face. Leo smiled at me, wiping my tears, but his effort was fruit
HAYLEE~~Princess Sophia and I just sat there in the kids' garden within the palace’s compound, where they have swings, a trampoline, and other fun items. But rather than have fun, we simply sat there on one of the benches, staring at space for the longest time until Princess Sophia let out, her eyes glued to the floor, “She hit you because of me. Why did you try to get me away from here when you are just a slave?” Her curiosity was louder than her voice, and I had to search deep within me for the right words so I wouldn’t hurt her any more than Princess Allison had. I sighed, “I saw you struggling and I knew what that feeling–”“I wasn’t struggling!” She snapped, her eyes flying to my face, as she tried to act strong. I smiled slowly, looking at the young Princess’s eyes, which told more than she was expressing. “You know it’s okay to struggle every now and then, Princess Sophia. Even adults struggle, and we shouldn’t bottle up our feelings.” She responded defensively but with
ALPHA KING XALEN~~“I hate you, and I’ll never forgive you for replacing Mom!”Sophia was everything but stupid, and I knew she could sense the changes in our home even though I had made sure no one informed her about the kind of relationship Allison and I were supposed to have.I made sure everyone in the pack kept their mouths shut to keep my children, especially Sophia, safe. Asher and Jodie were still too young to understand the change, but even though Sophia was very young as well, she was as smart as her mother and brave as her father.I didn’t miss the way Haylee ran after Sophia. “She has a good heart, and she cares about our kids despite how badly you have treated her,” Theo called me out, feeling just as weary as I had been feeling. I knew this day would come—the day Allison moved into my home, and despite how hard I tried to act indifferent, the current situation was affecting me–“Just tell them we already have a mate. This will save us from Alpha Richard's trap! We
HAYLEE~~“What do you think you are doing?” Princess Allison’s icy voice stopped me dead in my tracks as I took Princess Sophia’s hand, hoping to take her away from the toxic scene. I summoned the courage needed to look into the mean Princess’s eyes and answered with a steady voice despite the lies I was about to tell, “Taking the Princess to her room, My Lady. It’s time for her nap–” Though I had grown accustomed to physical abuse, the sharp pain that sliced through me as Princess Allison’s soft palm struck my cheek was still jarring. Her hand may have been delicate, but the slap was anything but gentle.“I’m your Queen, not your Lady. I’m royalty, and you will treat and refer to me as you do the King. Do I make myself clear?” She shouted in my face. Princess Sophia whimpered and hid herself behind me, acting like a terrified child for the first time since I met her.I didn’t hesitate to nod. In cases like this, I have learned to just give Caesar whatever he—or, in this case, s
HAYLEE~~The beginning of my second month in the palace as the Alpha King’s slave and nanny to his kids also marked the beginning of change. The change began the very day Princess Allison was moved into the palace, much to the Alpha King’s dismay. I had never seen him so defeated, angry, and full of hate.Do I pity him? Hell no!He had used his powers against me in the past and is still using them to keep me captive in a bond we both clearly didn’t want, and seeing him defeated kind of made me feel happy. I mean, the playing field has been leveled. “Be careful with that. I don’t want a scratch on it.” Princess Allison ordered the warriors that were moving her valuables into the palace. From the look of things and the number of properties that she came with, it seemed as if she was here to stay. Now that didn’t make me happy. That made my chest constrict.“He took her in as a prospective mate? They are practically engaged to marry in three months.” Liya snarled within me. Everyo
ALPHA KING XALEN~~“Damn!” I gritted, growling continuously as I began to pace before the desk in my office. The kind of anger coursing through me was one that consumed me. I was blinded by this rage. Each breath I took was rage. Each one I exhaled was rageful. I was shaking with rage, and knowing that my hands had been tied did nothing to reduce this rage.“My King–” Uncle Calvin tried to speak. But I seethed, barely stopping myself from throwing the desk at him, “Don’t even dare utter a word!” "In this dire situation, you know I can not just keep quiet—" Oh, I knew that, but that didn’t stop me from storming over to him. I shut him up with one glare and hiss in his face. “What is it that you have to say? You should have figured out the details of his proposal. You should have done research before letting me see him. Damn! I should have been prepared.”Alpha Richard and his daughter won this round. They knew that too well when they left my home with the intention of calling fo
HAYLEE~~“Enough!” I saw that coming from the second the late Queen was mentioned, but surprisingly, Alpha King Xalen didn’t lash out until the visiting Alpha dropped the bomb. The earth shook underneath my feet, or maybe I was the one who shook as the King’s anger spread through the room, hitting us all.“How dare you?” Alpha King Xalen snarled. “How dare you come to my pack... to my home and suggest your daughter replace my Laura?”Even the moon goddess couldn’t replace the late Queen in the Alpha King’s heart. To save myself from the hell I knew the Alpha King was about to invoke on the visiting Alpha, I stepped backward. My eyes lingered on Jodie, who was still in his arms, and I considered saving the baby as well, but before I could act on that thought, the visiting Alpha responded, a little shaky but quite confidently, “She is not replacing the late Queen, Alpha King. She will be the next Queen, joining the two Royal Families together and ending the strive between—” “I sai
ALPHA KING XALEN~~I had to go for a run.As soon as I sensed Alpha Richard’s presence in my Pack, I had to go for a run and burn some steam. I didn’t tell anyone where I was going but I assumed they would know.I didn’t waste much time before I returned home where I knew Alpha Richard and my uncle would be waiting for me. I also knew that Alpha Richard would be burning with anger as I didn’t respect him enough to receive him myself but who cares what a greedy man like him thinks? This was my chance to make him understand that even though I had agreed to meet him, I was still in charge. “Can you feel that?” Theo asked me as I pushed the front door of my home open, stepping into the living room and shifting my gaze from Alpha Richard to the other people he came with. “What now, Theo?” I asked my wolf even though I knew what he was calling my attention to. It was the feeling… The feeling that had been constant within me since I tied the salve’s consciousness to mine so I could s
HAYLEE~~Day after day, I served my master. A master who wouldn’t look at me, touch me, or speak to me... Mostly because I had made sure our paths didn't cross in the huge Palace. Day after day, I have worked and cared for children that weren’t mine. I wasn’t complaining because of the natural love I felt toward kids but my natural love had been tested many times these past few days. Aside from the pain their father had caused me, the experience of the past few days had traumatized me and more than usual, I have been quiet. If allowed to diagnose myself, I would say my broken parts have shattered into more pieces. I was depressed. Also, the fact that Princess Sophia hated me wasn’t making my life any easier. I recalled supporting her when her Dad asked her to apologize, but the little Princess had somehow forgotten that or maybe she hated me for doing that.Whatever reason she had, she was hell-bent on making my life even more difficult. Just yesterday, Princess Sophia entered
