Chapter 2 Innocent Girl

Penulis: Ink of the Divine
"Old Mr. Summer saved my life! I need to say my last goodbye to him!" Elijah was in sorrow as well, but all he had for these people was fury.

"He's Elijah? Heard no one in the family likes him. Benjamin was the exception. Now that he's dead, this house has no place for him."

"Can you blame them? He does nothing but leech off them. Goes MIA for months at a time, and now he shows up after Benjamin died. He's obviously trying to fight for the inheritance."

"But I thought he married Natalie. He's their family."

"Wait, you don't know the whole story? Benjamin matched them up and made Natalie marry the guy. You think an angel like her would marry someone like… him?"

The guests knew about the family's story, and gossip quickly flew in hushed voices. Morgan was glaring at Elijah. "You almost died, Elijah. My father saved you, took you in, and let you leech off our family! He even married Natalie to you, despite our objections! The accident wounded him terribly, and when he needed you most, you left him for dead!

"You son of a bitch, you think you can come into my house anytime you want? You don't deserve to see my father!"

Though Morgan looked furious, there was satisfaction in his eyes. His father was treating Elijah better over the last few years. It stoked his flames of envy, and the family was worried Elijah might fight them for the inheritance.

They tried to protest and argue with Benjamin only to get scolded and yelled at. Now that he was gone, no one could protect Elijah anymore. They could kick him out of the house like they always wanted to.

"What do you mean?" Elijah looked at the icy, distant faces, and he clenched his fists. He was a little stunned. Over the years, he gave everything to this family. He risked his life and put in all the elbow grease to help them out.

Even though he was out cold for more than half a day because of the excessive blood donation, he dragged his weakened body to an underworld faction to wipe them out because he got news about a planned attack on the Summers during Benjamin's funeral.

That would explain the bloodstains on his body. He trudged all the way here right after the battle.

"My dad says you're a useless piece of trash and an ungrateful bastard. You will never take anything from our family again. You're nothing but a stray my grandfather took from the streets. Have you ever looked in a mirror? You think someone like you is good enough for the family?"

Selene and Alicia had nothing but mockery for Elijah. There was disdain and scorn for him in their eyes.

Natalie looked at him coldly. Icily, she said, "We're getting divorced after the funeral. It's humiliating to be married to you. Even if we're only a couple on paper, you still disgust me."

Elijah looked at the sisters, but there was a sliver of icy indifference in his eyes. "Do you really think your family can rise through the ranks so quickly because of you three?"

If not for Elijah's efforts, the Summers would've been destroyed right after Natalie took over Summer Group. They'd never have gotten this far.

After Selene decided to work in the entertainment industry, it was all thanks to Elijah talking to the bigshots that she managed to have a smooth career and a smoother rise to fame.

It was only a short while ago that Alicia was nothing but a small-time thug whose best trait was drinking herself drunk and fighting herself bruised. If Elijah hadn't helped her from the shadows time and time again, she'd never have become the queen of the underworld, let alone grow her gang into a feared organization.

"Who else? You? Save your breath. If you have a conscience, you'd have donated your blood to Grandpa when he needed it most, just like Mr. Dunn did. We'd have considered keeping you as a pet. But you're an animal. You bit the hand that fed you and turned your back on your savior.

"Right here, right now, right in front of Grandpa, family, and friends, I'm telling you, you're exiled. From this moment onward, you have nothing to do with this family anymore!"

'I don't have a conscience? I'm an animal? The guy who donated his blood was Henry?' Stunned, Elijah raised his head and saw Morgan and his wife. He noticed the mockery in the eyes of Alicia and the others.

Coldly, Natalie warned, "If you try to scam anyone claiming that you're part of us, I will make you pay."

Elijah got the gist of the whole story, but he couldn't be bothered to explain himself. He bowed to the altar. "Farewell, Old Mr. Summer. Thank you for everything you did. I'd love to help your family, but as you can see, they have no place for me."

Benjamin's wretched family aside, the old gentleman did save his life. He'd have died on a remote island ten years ago otherwise. Still, everything he did for the family for the last ten years was more than enough to make it up to Benjamin.

This was a final bow. The arrow that would be fired off was one that would cut all ties to the Summers. They were nothing to him from this moment onward.

"Get out of our sight. You disgust us."

"Drop the act. Everyone knows you're an ingrate."

Natalie and her sisters were waving at the air quickly like they had just smelled something rotten. They scoffed and jeered at Elijah.

Elijah ignored the mockery and went away quietly. Part of the crowd didn't let him off the hook. They mocked, "Look, don't you think he's like a dog that lost his home?"

"Nice observation!"

The Summers laughed.

Dark clouds gathered in the skies, and thunder boomed. Heavy rain poured into the city. It drenched Elijah, but he seemed relieved. He had done so much for this family just to repay his debt. Frankly, he was tired.

"I live for no one but myself now." His phone rang, and Elijah picked it up. "Speak."

"A foreign conglomerate is going to tank Summer Group's share prices. Mr. Elijah, should we stop them like we always do?"

"No," answered Elijah tartly. "From now on, Summer Group's issues are taken off our agenda. I am no longer a member of the Summers. I am, and always will be, the Divine Eminence of the Palace of the Divine Dragon."

"As you have commanded, Your Eminence!"

The call ended, and Elijah had a mocking smirk on his face. The Palace of the Divine Dragon was a faction he'd been running for ten years, and it was a ruling force of the underworld. He could have protected the Summers forever, but these fools refused a chance at great fortune and fame in its face.

Elijah stood in the rain, wondering where he should go. Then, wet footsteps squelched behind him. A purple umbrella appeared over his head and kept the freezing rain from hitting him.

A beautiful young lady was holding the umbrella, and she looked a little innocent. In the girl's other hand was a bag of half-eaten snacks, and it seemed spicy. Her face was sweating.

Elijah looked at her, and the girl popped another piece of snack into her mouth. She panted heavily like a puppy to clear out the heat of the chili and offered a piece for Elijah. "Take one."

The girl was Cindy Hudson. Elijah found her when he was taking out a gang for Alicia, so he saved her. Cindy's hair was tied in a ponytail today. Her eyes shone brightly, and her teeth shone brighter still. Her face was picture perfect, fair and smooth as porcelain. Even the tiny hair on her face was adorable.Cindy wore a white top, a green tie, and a pleated skirt that reached her waist. Her feet were clad in anklets, and she radiated the air of life. 'Yeah, she feels like a high-schooler,' Elijah thought. He smiled but shook his head. "You can have it.""More for me!" The girl pulled her hand back and stuffed her mouth with what remained in the bag of snacks. Her cheeks puffed up like she was a squirrel. She looked cute when she was protective of her food. "Sorry. My folks would yell if they saw me eating any kind of snack. I bought a few packs on my way here. They don't know anything."Cindy hopped away and threw the empty pack into the bin and hopped back to Elijah like a bunn

Samuel noticed Jessica and Cindy, and his eyes lit up. "If you can't pay up, then I'm taking them. You can have them back once your debt is settled. Don't worry, I'll be gentle when I am on them, hehehe."He was reaching for Cindy, and Liam pounced on him, roaring, "Get away from my daughter! I'm the one you want, not her! If you want your money, take it from me!""You think this is a negotiation?" Samuel grabbed Liam's arm and pinned him against the ground.Cindy lunged at him and tried to make him let her father go. "Let my dad go!"That failed. Samuel could even reach out to her. "Come with me and do as I say, then I—"Elijah stood in front of Cindy and Liam. "Let him go and get your ass out of here.""Who the fuck are you, shithead? We're Bloodstride. No one messes with us here!" Samuel gave his men a look, and a pair of lackeys charged at Elijah."No, don't hurt Mr. Elijah! I'll give you the house as collateral!" Liam and his wife quickly shouted. They were worried about El

Smoothcorp was one of the top companies in the state. A partnership with Smoothcorp was part of Natalie's preparation to push her company to a bigger stage. She didn't want to be limited to Riverbay. At first, she made several trips to the state's capital, but she didn't even get to see even Smoothcorp's middle management. Just when she was getting frustrated, someone from Smoothcorp reached out to her and arranged a meeting with their CEO.The CEO himself met up with Natalie and gave her a huge business deal. He claimed that her efforts moved him. Natalie had always been proud of that. The whole city knew about the story, and the people piled praises on her. They'd given Smoothcorp the first batch of samples and set up a date for the contract signing, but now the deal was canceled out of the blue. "What on earth happened?" Natalie roared. She was losing composure. This business deal was important for her company.Putting the very handsome profit aside, this partnership would open

"I told you, he has retired for the night. Come back tomorrow!" Liam hissed, blocking Alicia.Alicia scoffed. "Then wake him up. Do you really think he's a prince or something? He's nothing but a piece of shit we flushed out of our house. He's seeing me whether he likes it or not!"Though Alicia was bossy, Cindy didn't flinch. "You can't say that about Elijah! He might not be a part of your family anymore, but he's our VIP! He's already asleep, and our family does not rouse our guests!"She'd seen a lot back when her family was still big. Alicia's request was refused, and she was subtly calling Alicia a mannerless wench whose family education was lacking."Ooh, Elijah, Elijah. You make me sick. If you're not doing it, I'll wake him myself. Get out of my way, or else!" Alicia was too idiotic to figure out the quiet insult in Cindy's reply. She kept making her way to the second floor, threatening the family openly."I won't. If you want to get to him, you'll have to get through me!"

"Are you alright, Cindy? Does it still hurt?" Elijah was holding a hot towel against Cindy's cheek. He was concerned about her.Cindy could almost smell the manly scent coming from him, and her heart started to race. "I-I'm okay, Elijah. You should check on Ms. Summer."Alicia's face was swollen, and she scraped herself while she tumbled down the stairs. She was in a worse state than Cindy."I don't really care about strangers. She got off easy considering she hit you." Elijah didn't even look at the idiot at the door.Cindy was a little panicky, but she stayed silent all the same. The Summers were cruel to Elijah, and he deserved to vent. Not to mention he saved her life, and he only hit Alicia for her. If she wanted revenge, Cindy thought she would face it with Elijah.Alicia had just gotten to the entrance, and she heard what Elijah said about her. She almost exploded with rage. 'You're nothing but a stray who leeched off my family for ten years, and now you're turning your bac

"If you want to get yourself killed, I'd be more than happy to oblige," hissed Ronald, his voice dripping with cold fury, his eyes filled with bloodlust. A string of crimson appeared on Alicia's neck. The cold of the steel and the sting of the pain drained the color from her face. She lowered her voice without thinking, "I'm the Summers' youngest daughter and Team Luna's leader. How dare you threaten me!""You flatter yourself, you bigheaded bimbo." Ronald chuckled, a hint of mockery lining his face. "You think the underworld keeps letting you do whatever you want because you're actually a bigshot?"He looked at Elijah sycophantically. "If it weren't for someone helping from the shadows, you'd be long dead. They're big, you know."Alicia was stunned. "Someone helped? And what do you mean they're big? What kind of nonsense are you spouting?" All these years, the bigshots and factions who crossed her would be destroyed not too long after their confrontation. Either that, or they woul

Though the debt was waived, the day's events still left Liam and his family rattled. They were getting a little paranoid. The doorbell started to ring, and they stopped whatever they were doing, frozen in place. They started getting nervous even without knowing it.Jessica opened the door and saw an unfamiliar man walking up to her quickly. "And you are…" She trailed off, slivers of hesitation streaking her voice."Hello. I am Jefferson Norwood, CEO of Smoothcorp. This is my card." The man was smiling, and he spoke politely. At the same time, he handed a business card over with both hands. The card gleamed golden.Liam had been listening in. "Smoothcorp?" He jumped out of his seat and quickly approached Jefferson. "Let Mr. Norwood in! Come in, come in, Mr. Norwood! Cindy, get him some tea!"Liam and Jessica floundered a little. They scrambled to welcome Jefferson into the house and stood up straight, like they were guests in their own home.Cindy shared her parents' posture, but s

Natalie was in a hurry to see Jefferson, so she ended the call before Alicia could finish talking. She had no idea Elijah had hit her sister. Natalie's face fell, and she looked at Elijah coldly, but her eyes were brimming with the flames of ire.Elijah used to care about her almost subserviently. Even a minor change in her emotion would get him worried, and he would try to cheer her up the best he could. He didn't even protest when she demanded that he sign the divorce papers and share transfer agreement.'It hasn't even been days, and this piece of shit is already mocking me? You think the Hudsons can take the contract that easily? Even if they take it, do you really think you can latch onto them and leech off Jefferson?'Natalie's eyes flickered, but she held back her fury and squeezed a smile at Jefferson. "I'm sorry for what I did earlier, Mr. Norwood. The sudden cancellation took me by surprise, and it's a little unfair to us. I'm sure you can see that we really want to work w

They were reapers, merciless specters of death. The sheer malice they radiated chilled Wade to the bone, his body trembling as though he had plunged into an icy abyss. The gap between his Shiverclad Legion and those nine executioners was insurmountable. It was nothing short of a one-sided massacre. In the blink of an eye, the chaos subsided. Silence reclaimed the night. All forty members of the Shiverclad Legion lay lifeless on the ground. Not a single one had survived."Elijah… you… you all…" Wade stammered, his tongue tied in disbelief.Nine black-clad figures knelt before Elijah, their cold, emotionless voices laced with apprehension. "We exceeded by one second. Please punish us, Your Excellency.""Punish yourselves when we return," Elijah replied, his tone indifferent.Wade's face turned ashen at the exchange.Twenty-one seconds. They had slaughtered nearly forty Shiverclad Legion elites in twenty-one seconds, yet Elijah wasn't satisfied and expected punishment for the del

The Shiverclad Legion of Team Luna was a force to be reckoned with, a unit trained to take on ten opponents each without breaking a sweat. The nearly forty men dispatched tonight could easily decimate an enemy force of four hundred and emerge victorious.Yet here Elijah was, claiming they would all fall that night. Was he delusional? To Wade, it was nothing but a joke. He scoffed, saying, "I heard you've learned a few petty tricks, but against the Shiverclad Legion, there's only one outcome for you: death."He raised his hand, signaling his men forward. The forty Shiverclad Legion members advanced with a unified ferocity as though ready to tear Elijah apart in an instant."If you get on your knees, beg me, and break your own limbs, I might just give you a quick death," Wade taunted, his expression filled with mocking amusement."You want my life?" Elijah quirked a brow, a cold smile playing on his lips. "With just you and your men? Not even close."Wade's expression darkened with

"I'll immediately mobilize the Shiverclad Legion to drag him over! Not only will he personally heal Cameron, but he'll also kneel and beg for forgiveness. After that, I'll break every bone in his body and make him suffer everything Cameron endured," Alicia declared, her voice icy and firm.Natalie frowned. "Didn't you say the Bloodstride Gang—"Alicia sneered. "They're just putting on a show, trying to scare me into thinking a fight with them would cost Team Luna dearly. But with my reputation in Riverbay, who would dare oppose me? Once I give the order, the Bloodstride Gang will be nothing but ashes in no time."Her expression turned ruthless, her confidence unshakable. "A group of clowns like them won't stop me from dealing with one insignificant loser."The sisters exchanged glances and quickly agreed.Anyone who had crossed Alicia before had eventually come crawling to apologize, and the Bloodstride Gang would be no exception. Moreover, the team she was dispatching was the Shi

"I didn't do anything! It was all still fine yesterday—Master even said he'd help me advance to the Professor level…" Victor muttered, utterly lost.Natalie urged him, "Stop overthinking! Ask your mentor what's going on and find a way to fix this!"The apprenticeship under the world's only Doctor Supreme wasn't just a matter of personal achievement for Victor—it was a monumental asset for the entire Summer family.Victor nodded hastily. 'Master, if I've done anything wrong, please tell me. I'll apologize and promise never to repeat it. Natalie's furious with me for upsetting you—she's been scolding me nonstop!'Victor once again tried to invoke Natalie's name, a tactic that had always worked in the past.'Tell her this: as of now, you've been expelled from my tutelage,' Elijah replied coldly. 'Her cousin is unworthy of being my disciple.'Victor's face turned ashen, his vision spinning. Did Elijah really mean it? Had he truly been expelled? It seemed like Elijah wasn't joking,

In Riverbay, where the preference for sons over daughters ran deep, no prominent family would ever hand over its legacy to a woman.Natalie had long felt guilt toward her uncle, Mark, and her cousin, Victor. She often thought of herself as a thief, stealing what should have been theirs. She had even cried about it in secret several times. If it hadn't been for Elijah's subtle nudges and his staged acts as the Doctor Supreme, alongside training Victor through online mentorship and helping him achieve fame, Natalie might never have overcome her guilt.'Master, are you there? Sorry to bother you so late!' Victor messaged respectfully. In the past, Elijah had tolerated Victor for Natalie's sake. Even though he wasn't particularly fond of him, he would patiently solve Victor's problems. But this time, his reply was curt. 'What is it?'Victor was taken aback. His usually kind and approachable mentor sounded unusually cold.'Master, my younger brother was injured by a scoundrel. That ma

"Victor, you're the youngest miracle doctor in Riverbay! How can someone of your caliber fail to treat Cameron?" The Summer family all turned to Victor, their faces filled with disbelief, making the young doctor's face burn with embarrassment and anxiety."What about your mentor, Victor? Since you've hit a roadblock, why not reach out to him?" Morgan frowned, his tone sharp.Victor's eyes lit up. "You're right—my mentor can definitely help!"Victor's accomplishments in medicine were all thanks to his apprenticeship under the legendary Doctor Supreme, a mysterious figure known for solving even the most impossible medical challenges. His mentor could always find a solution no matter the issue.Reinvigorated, Victor quickly pulled out his phone and opened a specialized medical app."This is the GMA Medical Ranking and Consultation app, developed by the World Medical Association," Victor explained. Unfortunately for Cameron, Elijah caught his fist effortlessly, gripping it tightly.Cameron struggled with all his might, yet he couldn't break free. Fear gripped him as he wondered, "Wasn't this guy supposed to be a loser?""Let go of me!" Cameron shouted.Elijah's expression remained icy as he twisted Cameron's wrist."Ah!" Cameron let out a guttural scream. "Let go, or I'll kill you!"Elijah's eyes turned colder, his silence more menacing. Then, he twisted harder.Crack!Cameron's wrist snapped. The preference for sons over daughters was deeply ingrained in Riverbay. When Morgan's three children all turned out to be daughters, most people assumed Benjamin would hand the family inheritance to Mark's family. After all, Mark had two sons, and his eldest, Victor Summer, was quite accomplished.A few years ago, Victor had even become the apprentice of the Doctor Supreme, earning the title of the youngest and most skilled miracle doctor in Riverbay.Alas, no one expected Benjamin to hand the Summer family business over to Natalie right after she graduated college. And when the old patriarch arranged for Natalie to marry Elijah, he fully retired, leaving Summer Holdings entirely in her hands. In Cameron's eyes, the only reason his family didn't inherit the family wealth was because of Elijah's interference. So, Cameron couldn't resist kicking him while he was down to vent his frustration now that Elijah was "down on his luck."When Cameron started hurling insults, one of his fri

After a quick word with Dylan, he headed toward a smoked barbecue truck on the opposite side of the street. The owner of the truck, a man with teeth stained yellow, jumped up from his recliner as soon as he saw Elijah. "Aries of the Eclipse Unit, at your service, Your Excellency!""Let's skip the formalities," Elijah said, waving his hand nonchalantly before lowering his voice. "What's the latest?
