Chapter 4 Bad News

Author: Ink of the Divine
Samuel noticed Jessica and Cindy, and his eyes lit up. "If you can't pay up, then I'm taking them. You can have them back once your debt is settled. Don't worry, I'll be gentle when I am on them, hehehe."

He was reaching for Cindy, and Liam pounced on him, roaring, "Get away from my daughter! I'm the one you want, not her! If you want your money, take it from me!"

"You think this is a negotiation?" Samuel grabbed Liam's arm and pinned him against the ground.

Cindy lunged at him and tried to make him let her father go. "Let my dad go!"

That failed. Samuel could even reach out to her. "Come with me and do as I say, then I—"

Elijah stood in front of Cindy and Liam. "Let him go and get your ass out of here."

"Who the fuck are you, shithead? We're Bloodstride. No one messes with us here!" Samuel gave his men a look, and a pair of lackeys charged at Elijah.

"No, don't hurt Mr. Elijah! I'll give you the house as collateral!" Liam and his wife quickly shouted. They were worried about Elijah.

"Mr. Elijah?" The lackeys hesitated.

Samuel's eyes flickered. "And which family do you come from?" He was a veteran in this area of town. There were a lot of people in Riverbay he should never cross if he wanted to live.

"He used to be our pet, but we kicked him out," an icy voice said from the entrance.

Everyone turned around and saw an aloof and powerful woman coming in, escorted by a dozen bodyguards.

Samuel and the others were shocked. "M-Ms. Natalie, what brings you here?"

Natalie Summers was the head of Summer Group and the aloof goddess every man in Riverbay wanted to have. Three years ago, the leader of Samuel's gang demanded that Natalie sleep with him in three days, or he would destroy her company.

Two hours later, the same guy was kneeling before the Summers' abode, begging for forgiveness. That went on for three days, and the guy's knees were raw after that. No one knew the real story behind that incident, but no one would test the Summers just to find out.

"Nat," blurted Elijah.

Samuel and his lackeys were shocked. Sweat spilled like bullets from their foreheads. 'They're that close?'

Natalie looked at Elijah darkly. Icily, she said, "You have nothing to do with us anymore. Try to buddy up with me again and I'll make you regret it!"

Elijah shot her an equally icy look. "What are you here for?"

"Divorce papers and share transfer agreement. Sign them. Chop chop." Natalie didn't hide her disgust. She took the papers her bodyguard handed to her and tossed them toward Elijah. This divorce meant Elijah wouldn't get a single cent.

He would give all the shares Benjamin gifted to him to Natalie, free of charge. Elijah skimmed through the papers coolly and signed them without hesitation.

"At least you're not a total moron. My men would have broken you otherwise. Remember, if I find you dragging my family's name through the mud ever again, you'll find that this city has no place for you!" Natalie sneered at the agreements and left the house with her bodyguards, chest puffed out.

Elijah held up the horrified Liam. Quietly, he asked, "What happened, Liam?"

"You should stay out of this. I had cashflow problems, and the bank wouldn't approve my loan, so I sought Bloodstride's help. They set me up. The contract… including the interest, I have to pay them five times what I could've borrowed from the bank."

Elijah was moved. Even though Liam's family was in dire straits, they took him in without hesitation.

Samuel snickered. "Watch your tongue, Mr. Hudson. You signed the papers. The contract was clear for you to see." He then looked at Elijah mockingly. "Dear Mr. Elijah, are you still going to get in our way?" he said sardonically.

"Come with me." Elijah gave him a frosty glance and went outside.

Samuel's face fell. "What's that all about? I said nothing about you leaving!" As if on cue, his lackeys barreled toward Elijah, but then they felt their souls trembling from the pressure of the bloodlust coming from Elijah.

Elijah extended his arm and showed Samuel an old ring.

"What is this?" Samuel was stunned, but then he noticed the black tiger seal on the ring and the complex patterns around it. Then, his face turned into a mask of horror, and sweat poured like rain. "T-That's the token of the Black Tigers' leader. Y-You're the guy who took them out?"

Earlier in the morning, the Black Tigers, a gang on par with Team Luna and one that'd been established in Riverbay for more than twenty years, was destroyed. Their headquarters were razed to the ground. All its members, including its leader, Tigre Duncan, perished in battle.

The news shook the underworld and struck fear in the hearts of these never-do-wells. The best and brightest of them all were pulling all the strings to find out the mastermind behind the destruction. They didn't want to be next on the list.

But now that mastermind was right in front of Samuel.

Natalie went back home, cold and icy as ever. The look on her face was nothing short of chilly.

Selene frowned. "I thought you brought your bodyguards, Natalie. That scum refused to sign?"

Natalie sneered and shook her head. "He signed the papers, but guess what I found? The Hudsons took them in, and I think he has an affair with their daughter. Wonder when they hooked up."

Even though Natalie had no love or even an ounce of affection for Elijah, he was still her husband on paper. 'How dare he cheat on me! Me, of all people! I am the gods' gift to humanity! How dare someone try to steal my toy!'

Anger flashed in Selene's eyes. "What? That family's edging on bankruptcy, and their daughter stole something that belonged to you? How dare they! We can't let this slide! That little bitch knew he was married to you, and she still hooked up with him! And Liam took him in? They're trying to defy us!"

She added, "These idiots don't know what's good for them! We should push them over the edge, or else everyone's going to think we're a pushover!"

Natalie nodded. "Agreed. They got into some trouble with Bloodstride, and that worthless trash tried to meddle. He might die tonight."

Selene sneered. "After losing our support? He's dead meat."

They were about to wait and see, but Alicia had been listening in on the conversation outside, and she was as black as thunder. The girl marched out of the door. "I don't wait for revenge. No one insults my family. They're dead!"

Natalie's phone rang. "What?"

"Bad news, Ms. Natalie. Smoothcorp canceled the business deal. They've also announced a permanent blacklisting. We're getting no more deals from them."

"What?" Natalie's face fell.

"I told you, he has retired for the night. Come back tomorrow!" Liam hissed, blocking Alicia.Alicia scoffed. "Then wake him up. Do you really think he's a prince or something? He's nothing but a piece of shit we flushed out of our house. He's seeing me whether he likes it or not!"Though Alicia was bossy, Cindy didn't flinch. "You can't say that about Elijah! He might not be a part of your family anymore, but he's our VIP! He's already asleep, and our family does not rouse our guests!"She'd seen a lot back when her family was still big. Alicia's request was refused, and she was subtly calling Alicia a mannerless wench whose family education was lacking."Ooh, Elijah, Elijah. You make me sick. If you're not doing it, I'll wake him myself. Get out of my way, or else!" Alicia was too idiotic to figure out the quiet insult in Cindy's reply. She kept making her way to the second floor, threatening the family openly."I won't. If you want to get to him, you'll have to get through me!"

He was concerned about her.Cindy could almost smell the manly scent coming from him, and her heart started to race. "I-I'm okay, Elijah. You should check on Ms. Summer."Alicia's face was swollen, and she scraped herself while she tumbled down the stairs. She was in a worse state than Cindy."I don't really care about strangers. She got off easy considering she hit you." Elijah didn't even look at the idiot at the door.Cindy was a little panicky, but she stayed silent all the same. The Summers were cruel to Elijah, and he deserved to vent. Not to mention he saved her life, and he only hit Alicia for her. If she wanted revenge, Cindy thought she would face it with Elijah.Alicia had just gotten to the entrance, and she heard what Elijah said about her. She almost exploded with rage. "If you want to get yourself killed, I'd be more than happy to oblige," hissed Ronald, his voice dripping with cold fury, his eyes filled with bloodlust. A string of crimson appeared on Alicia's neck. The cold of the steel and the sting of the pain drained the color from her face. She lowered her voice without thinking, "I'm the Summers' youngest daughter and Team Luna's leader. How dare you threaten me!""You flatter yourself, you bigheaded bimbo." Ronald chuckled, a hint of mockery lining his face. "You think the underworld keeps letting you do whatever you want because you're actually a bigshot?"He looked at Elijah sycophantically. "If it weren't for someone helping from the shadows, you'd be long dead. They're big, you know."Alicia was stunned. "Someone helped? And what do you mean they're big? What kind of nonsense are you spouting?" All these years, the bigshots and factions who crossed her would be destroyed not too long after their confrontation. Either that, or they woul

Though the debt was waived, the day's events still left Liam and his family rattled. They were getting a little paranoid. The doorbell started to ring, and they stopped whatever they were doing, frozen in place. They started getting nervous even without knowing it.Jessica opened the door and saw an unfamiliar man walking up to her quickly. "And you are…" She trailed off, slivers of hesitation streaking her voice."Hello. I am Jefferson Norwood, CEO of Smoothcorp. This is my card." The man was smiling, and he spoke politely. At the same time, he handed a business card over with both hands. The card gleamed golden.Liam had been listening in. "Smoothcorp?" He jumped out of his seat and quickly approached Jefferson. "Let Mr. Norwood in! Come in, come in, Mr. Norwood! Cindy, get him some tea!"Liam and Jessica floundered a little. They scrambled to welcome Jefferson into the house and stood up straight, like they were guests in their own home.Cindy shared her parents' posture, but s

Natalie was in a hurry to see Jefferson, so she ended the call before Alicia could finish talking. She had no idea Elijah had hit her sister. Natalie's face fell, and she looked at Elijah coldly, but her eyes were brimming with the flames of ire.Elijah used to care about her almost subserviently. Even a minor change in her emotion would get him worried, and he would try to cheer her up the best he could. He didn't even protest when she demanded that he sign the divorce papers and share transfer agreement.'It hasn't even been days, and this piece of shit is already mocking me? You think the Hudsons can take the contract that easily? Even if they take it, do you really think you can latch onto them and leech off Jefferson?'Natalie's eyes flickered, but she held back her fury and squeezed a smile at Jefferson. "I'm sorry for what I did earlier, Mr. Norwood. The sudden cancellation took me by surprise, and it's a little unfair to us. I'm sure you can see that we really want to work w

Then their questions came like a barrage of bullets."Elijah again? That's impossible. How could he do that? And Ronald's nothing but our lapdog. Why would he take that piece of shit's side? And I almost forgot. Why did you go to the Hudsons'?""I heard your conversation. Elijah cheated on Natalie and hooked up with some slut out there. I saw red, so I stormed up to wherever he was, but…" Alicia gritted her teeth and told her sisters what happened at the Hudsons'.Natalie's face fell further and further. Realization struck her. Picking up the phone from his room, he scrolled to a specific number and made a call.He found Cindy in the kitchen when he returned,

Was he delusional? To Wade, it was nothing but a joke. He scoffed, saying, "I heard you've learned a few petty tricks, but against the Shiverclad Legion, there's only one outcome for you: death."He raised his hand, signaling his men forward. The forty Shiverclad Legion members advanced with a unified ferocity as though ready to tear Elijah apart in an instant."If you get on your knees, beg me, and break your own limbs, I might just give you a quick death," Wade taunted, his expression filled with mocking amusement."You want my life?" In Riverbay, where the preference for sons over daughters ran deep, no prominent family would ever hand over its legacy to a woman.Natalie had long felt guilt toward her uncle, Mark, and her cousin, Victor. She often thought of herself as a thief, stealing what should have been theirs. She had even cried about it in secret several times. If it hadn't been for Elijah's subtle nudges and his staged acts as the Doctor Supreme, alongside training Victor through online mentorship and helping him achieve fame, Natalie might never have overcome her guilt.'Master, are you there? Sorry to bother you so late!' Victor messaged respectfully. In the past, Elijah had tolerated Victor for Natalie's sake. Even though he wasn't particularly fond of him, he would patiently solve Victor's problems. But this time, his reply was curt. 'What is it?'Victor was taken aback.
