Finn POV
"Shall we drop anchor, Cap'n?"
I was startled from my daydream by Cyrell, my first mate. A shame really, because that vision of you and I, dancing by firelight on the sand had started to feel real. I could almost smell the mixture of sea salt and rum as I held you close. The smoky flavour left on my lips after another slow kiss. I hummed my favourite sea shanty softly as we swayed, your head nestled on my chest, fingers intertwined.
"Cut through the mist,
approaching dawn,
the sea returns,
what once was gone..."
"Aye Cyrell, this seems as good a place as any."
Truth be told, I was beginning to care less and less about where we dropped anchor. It's been 7 years of chasing the perfect spot, the spot whereupon daybreak you might be returned to me. 7 long years and my hope was beginning to fade.
It was never meant to be this way; your Siren song was destined to lure me to my end. Although, 7 years missing half of your soul doesn't count for much of an existence. In my youth I would have dreamed of a life at sea, never having to return to land. I felt bound to the sea in a way that was beyond my control. Everything began to make sense that day we wrecked off the coast of Crete.
"On stranger tides,
Drop anchor and pray,
That your love returns,
with Dawn's first rays..."
I was clinging to the jagged rocks below the cliff-face. Barely alive. I could see what was left of the flaming ship on the horizon. My first love, sinking to the bottom of the ocean and taking too many poor souls with her. A Captain would never abandon his crew, I should have gone down with them. I had been distracted, the wind was calling to me. I could see the cliff line in the distance and was entranced by the sweetest sound to ever reach my ears. My trance was cut short by the first blast, which threw me from the deck into the depths below. Amongst the chaos of flame, cracking timber and cries for help... I could still hear it.
So, I swam in the only direction that made sense, toward that call...
I knew I had to get out of the water. My only option was the opening to a small cave. The tide had not yet come in, but soon would. My window was small and it was a risk. But it was a risk or death. Perhaps I was just prolonging the inevitable. Either way, I was entering that cave.
"Cut through the mist,
approaching dawn,
the sea returns,
what once was gone..."
As I attempted to pull my exhausted frame from the water, you appeared. The wind was calling to me again. I thought I was hallucinating, I was too late, death was already beginning to take me.
"You were not supposed to live Sailor..."
Your voice was a symphony. Full of melodic layers that touched my very soul. I had heard the myths, I knew what you were, and I knew my fate was in your hands.
"Then I suppose you must now take my life, Siren..." I managed to choke out.
When your hand grasped my throat, I felt no fear. When your skin made contact with mine it was like a fire ignited within me. On the cusp of certain death, I felt infinitely more alive than I ever had before. You felt it too, the connection... The way you tilted your head in curiosity as your obsidian eyes examined mine told me as much.
"You are a child of the sea, Sailor. I cannot take your life." your melodic voice soothing me as you loosened your grip on my throat.
You turned to leave, so I grabbed your hand. Watching you walk away from me was more than I could stand. I was still under the curse of your call, that much was obvious.
"No, please. Wait... I... I need to thank you. For sparing my life."
"It is not my choice Sailor, we are tethered..."
"Tethered? You mean you have cursed me?" I realised my mistake immediately, the fury in your eyes told me that if I wasn't cursed, I was about to be. Your face was millimetres from mine and if I hadn't been terrified, I might have taken a moment to memorise your features. Hair like the sun, your skin pale, with an iridescent sheen and your eyes... the deepest obsidian, designed to lure many a poor sailor to his death. Your expression softened after a few moments and I finally dared to take a breath.
"Perhaps it is you who has cursed me, Sailor. I was not expecting to find the other half of my soul in a human..." You spat the words like it left a foul taste in your mouth.
"Tethered— we were two halves, we are now one. Killing you would be killing myself, and so, you shall live."
"On stranger tides,
Drop anchor and pray,
That your love returns,
with Dawn's first rays..."
I wish I had some grasp at the time of what an exceptional and rare gift it was to be tethered. If I'd have known what it truly meant to find the other half of one's soul, I would have begged you to run. To run with me as far as we could go, deep onto dry land and far from the sea. If only I'd known how unforgiving she would be... How cruel a mother could be to her children...
It would have killed you though, the heart could not survive outside the body, and to take you from the sea would have been removing her heart.
The three days that followed are becoming more difficult to recall. It has been so long. Specifics are blurring into snippets of memory. My sun-haired Siren, my other half. I followed like a stray puppy and you allowed it, we both know you could have shaken me easily if you so chose. You explained things to me as best you could. You were patient with me as I tried to understand. It was easy enough to believe every word, I knew without explanation that we were bound to each other.
"She will not allow this, Sailor. I am her heart. She will not allow me to be tempted to stray from her..."
"Then I will stay with you. Whatever it takes. My place is here, with you."
"You are a risk she will not take. She would rather see me lose half my soul than lose the heart of the Sea. You must go, it is no longer safe for you here. She comes..."
I felt her presence before she spoke, the air became thick and I struggled to breathe like I was drowning...
"She gave you fair warning. You should have run, Sailor..."
"Please Mother, you know what he is to me." You pleaded, the confident melody of your voice held a shakiness I had not heard before.
"It is because I know what he is to you, that I will do what must be done."
You knew I realised, what she was about to do. The way you turned to me, panic flooding your obsidian pools.
"I will return to you Sailor, do not forget, we are tethered."
Those were the last words I heard you speak before her wretched curse invaded my mind.
"Cut through the mist,
approaching dawn,
the sea returns,
what once was gone...
On stranger tides,
Drop anchor and pray,
That your love returns,
with Dawn's first rays..."
Caterina POV "The Heart of the Sea, Trapped in time, I'll sing you back to me, Love of mine..." I see you, Sailor. Your endless search for me. That is perhaps the cruellest part of her curse. She allows me to watch you...wantyou. So close, yet just beyond reach. Our tether pulls me wherever you go but her curse holds me under. Never allowed to breach the surface. You've become more determined these last three months. I wonder, have the visions started for you too? Our time together was so brief. Three days was all we had, yet that was enough for our souls to be bound for life. I remember the look of curiosity and wonder on your face as I explained our connection. You believed every word, you had no choice, you couldfeelit. "So, you're saying I've been wandering around my whole life, missing half of my soul?" "What I'm saying,
Finn POV As I turned from the horizon to prepare for the day, the sky darkened impossibly fast. The waves began to rise and crash over us. It had been months, possibly longer, since we faced a storm. The sea had been eerily kind to us on our voyage. The crew began to panic, they were out of practice and none of us saw this one coming from the clear morning we just witnessed. “Anchor’s aweigh Cap’n!” Thank god for Cyrell, at least one of us was thinking. “Excellent work Cyrell! Let’s see what the old girl can do!” I grabbed the helm and faced the menacing storm head on. Another day’s disappointment had me feeling reckless. We worked tirelessly for what must have only been minutes as we were thrashed about the ocean be the ferocious waves. Thunder and lightning crashed overhead as the sky pelted us with heavy rain. The wind was unbearable and made the rain feel like razors as it made contact with my bare ski
Caterina POV You were staring right at me. Why could you not have done this at dawn, Sailor? Then you would have seen. You would have seen me, where I have waited for you for all these years. The curse would be lifted and we would be reunited. What is the use of my power if I can’t break a simple curse? I would move the earth itself to be able to breach the surface and make myself known to you. I would give anything to have some way of telling you that I am right here… I closed my eyes and began to sing, blindly hoping that the power of my Siren song would break through the barrier and reach you. "The Heart of the Sea, Trapped in time, I'll sing you back to me, Love of mine... Below the surface, Lie the answers you seek, Turn your stare to the water, Call on your soul to see...

He had been the closest thing to a Father I had ever known since she murdered my true Father. He had not hesitated when I asked him to leave the Sea and act as Finn’s protector all those years ago. If only I had known he would not be able to return to me either, I was unable to tell him how to break the curse.I didn’t miss the look of shock on Finn’s face as his first mate bowed to me before embracing me in a fatherly hug.“My love, Cyrell was sent by me to protect you after the curse was placed on us. He is a very old, very dear friend of mine.”“You didn’t think to tell me, old man?” Finn asked Cyrell impatiently.&ldquo
Finn POVI pulled myself away from Caterina and looked down at my hands in astonishment. My skin was… Iridescent. The same sheen that you find on fish scales. Suddenly I felt like I couldn’t breathe, the room feeling crushingly small, as though walls were closing in on me.Without hesitation, she grabbed me and hurled us both through the glass of the small window and into the depths below. As soon as we were submerged, my lungs felt full once again. I could breathe…. But how?“Well, Sailor, that was unexpected….”I looked up to find Caterina floating a few feet from me, smirking.“I knew you were a child of the sea, but this, this I did not see coming”“See what coming? Caterina, what’s going on?”She floated close to me and gave me a reassuring kiss

This was one of his powers I realised, he could command the creatures of the sea. A common trait amongst the Mer of old, and would be a valuable tool in our inevitable battle against her.He didn’t know it yet, but soon we would commence the hunt. I had to ensure he understood his abilities first. But we needed to move with haste. The further she fled, the harder she would be to track.“So, what can you do?” He appeared before me so quickly I was startled. His movements in the water were almost untraceable.“What do you mean what can I do?” I quipped.“You know, what are your… abilities?”“I am a Siren an
Finn POVHer words quickly brought me back to reality. I had been in a trance, consumed by the act of our bodies and power feeding from one another. I could feel her strength increasing with each movement which only spurred me on. Neither of us realised the effect we were having on the water….The ship was caught in rough seas, with a spellbound crew unable to fight for her. She was right, we had to get off the ship and we had to get far away if we wanted the ship and the men to survive.I used all my strength to carry us from my chamber to the deck and wasted no time in tossing us into the waves assaulting the vessel. Caterina POVAfter the murder of my Father, I had sworn I would not return here. There are few things that can kill a god. Less than a few. For the Sea Witch to have succeeded, she needed an accomplice. Someone powerful, with ancient knowledge. My Father’s list of enemies was long, but it is an act of war to murder a God. Whoever had aided her has declared war on the Sea, and in time, it will be my duty to avenge his death. As a means to an end, we need their help. Finn POVI’m not sure how I knew what to do. I was running on instinct when I grabbed Caterina and redirected that wave of power at myself. Somehow, I knew I would be able to absorb it.I glanced over at the pool to see several shocked faces looking our way. Caterina’s sister was on the ground, desperately trying to catch her breath after her near-death experience. Served her right, I thought. She showed complete disregard toward the fact that I was her sister’s tethered-mate. As though I could be tempted by her Siren ways, when I was bonded to another. The only thing that tempted me was watching Caterina wield her power. She had drawn the energy from the pool in the same way she is able to from the sea. She was fierce, and I was more than aroused by the fact that her rage was fuelled by her devotion to me.“Are you alright, love?”I tilted her chin
Caterina POV“Até, I wish I could say it was good to see you, but we both know that would be a lie…”“Oh Caterina, you wound me. Is that any way to greet your favourite cousin?”Até is the goddess of mischief, and my cousin. Technically, all the gods and goddesses are. All daughters of Poseidon are Sirens, and we all trained under Até. She is a master of leading men, both mortal and immortal down the path to ruin. She is beautiful and dangerous. Not someone I was hoping for us to encounter here.“And who is this?” she purred, running her delicate finger down Finn’s chest before biting it between her teeth. I had seen her look at men in this way thousands of times, but the rage I felt at her looking at Finn that way felt like an inferno beneath my skin.“Caterina’s tethered mate. And I suggest to kee
