The house is eerily quiet, even though it’s not that early, and the sun is streaming in all the lower floor windows. Following Dane as he leads me by the hand to the kitchen, aware everyone must still be asleep. Unlike us, who ended up in bed at a reasonable hour, most of them were up until dawn. Even Tyler and Lees didn’t come tumbling into the room until it was almost light outside and are currently comatose, wrapped up in a fully clothed tangle of limbs and sheets upstairs. They are adorably cute together, like two exhausted toddlers who fell to sleep where they landed after playing.

I’m tired this morning, but not overly so, and a little fragile down below, even though I didn’t think I would be. It’s not like he was rough on me or that we did it for hours, yet I can definitely feel subtle tenderness as a reminder that last night wasn't a dream. I still don’t regret it at all.

I love him.

Dane lets me go to rifle in the nearest cabinets on the wall closest to us and hauls out two m

“Afternoon.” I wander into the kitchen to find Dane already here where I expected to see him. Sitting cradling a half-drunk coffee with one hand while he reads one of the books I gave him for his birthday. He’s been patiently waiting for me. Looking adorably hot, perched this way and focused on the comic. It’s a nice, quiet Sunday afternoon to recover from last night, and we have only been home for about two hours. We took time to separate because our parents were home, knowing they wouldn't stay here all day. Sunday is their sort of ritualistic date day for going out to markets and art galleries. I had an essay to finish, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to focus with him beside me after last night, so it was a good use of time until they left. So he left me be and seems to have been amusing himself by reading his birthday gift.“Hey, gorgeous.” Dane drops his book, lets go of his mug, and slides out of the breakfast bar to meet me on the way in, kissing me lightly and ruffling my hair

“Mom.” Is the only word I can gasp out as I push Dane off me at speed and scramble to right my bra inside my shirt and haul my shorts back into place. Shame flushing over my entire body that we just got caught this way, and I want the ground to open and swallow me. Mortified about what they saw us doing and yet, at the same time, hitting an all-time ‘oh shit’ moment because I don’t want this to be the end. I don’t want Dane to be sent to London. I don’t want to lose him this way.I have an urge to wail and run away, taking him with me rather than face the wrath of our parents like this. My limbs are already trembling in cold fear.Dane shifts away quickly, too, to tend to his pulled-around outfit, turning away directly to probably calm the boner, causing him an obvious trouser tent, and yet it’s like time stands still. The sudden eery, heavy atmosphere and tense silence as though the world has hushed and the only noise is my mother’s subtle simpering. Our parents are standing like a f

“Bullshit…this is bullshit. You’re lying.” Dane erupts before I can really swallow down the words that have wounded me with a sucker punch to my heart. “You’ve always hated me, and I wouldn’t put it past you to stoop this low and lie….so I break up with Kayla.” He half yells, half accuses, straining forward to get in her face, and I can taste the growing despair and anger circling him like a cyclone. “I don’t believe you.”“This isn’t true…you would have told me…dad would have….” I trail off, whimpering the words as something clicks in my head and slices through me with speed and severity, making my legs tingle, and my limbs grow weak. “Is that why? Why has he been this way towards me for the past ten years?”I don’t want to believe this or swallow it down, but it’s like something just smacked me in the head and woke up the underlying doubts. It races through my brain and thunders through my entire body like a shocking cold wall of ice. Tingling my brain through my scalp, and even my

“You have to eat, open the door. We need to talk.”“Go away…. Leave me alone.” My anger and venom have not dissipated any; instead, it grows by the hour. Irritated by my mom’s lingering presence because she just won’t leave me alone. Her whiny, pleading voice only riles fresh anger in me, and I throw my pillow at my bedroom door in frustration. Annoyed by her presence, and go back to staring at my cell, waiting for a reply that hasn’t come. I feel like I am going silently insane, and time has come to a standstill. I don’t know what else to do but sit here and wait given my entire existence has been turned upside down and my hope for any future is so far away I cannot reach him.Dane has been gone for days, yet he hasn’t called, he hasn’t texted me back, and Bryan has been silent, too, like they were sucked into some soundproofed bubble where all contact has ceased. For me, anyway. I don’t know if my mother speaks to them because I can't stomach her at all, even for a second, to have o

“Oh my god, I missed you so much.” Elisa catapults herself into my arms, almost knocking me into our pool with the enthusiasm of an over-excited puppy, then nearly strangles me to death while simultaneously crushing my ribs. Her excitement is palpable, and her hug is overdue. I regret now giving her the silent treatment for ten days before being able to find the mental strength to tell her everything in a phone call. I had no way of verbalizing things without breaking down in hysteria until last night, and I knew Tyler would have told her already, but she needed to hear it from me. I have never gone silent on my best friend in my whole life or hidden away Dane style like his, but I needed time to process and grieve. This was such a huge thing that I spent too many days crying in bed until no more tears fell. I am exhausted and now exist in some odd dreamlike reality where nothing seems real.I think I am finally spent. Tears have dried up, and instead of the constant agonizing pain of

“She went to the airport early to wait for Bryan…to avoid me, I guess. Things here have been strained and hard, and we have come to a silent cold war. I can’t stand being in the same place as her, yet she insists now we eat together again and won’t let me stay locked up in my room. She had a carpenter come and remove the locks….who does that?” It’s a tired accusation, lacking real vavoom, even if it still angers me that she did it. I have long since lost the fight I had to stay away from her at all costs. She is like a buzzing fly around my head, and it’s easier to obey and eat silently while ignoring her presence than have her hammering down my door.If she’s trying to force normalcy back into this house, then she shouldn’t hold her breath for it to happen.“Sounds like something your mom would do.” Tyler snorts, and I am starting to see that all these years, Dane has definitely colored his friend’s view of my mom. As polite as Tyler was when he was here before, I have never actually

I’m tired already, and it’s only eleven AM, and another class is starting. I regret coming back today, given last night I barely slept and instead cried myself raw on Dane's empty bed. Draped in the hoody that he wore the first time we took Elisa to the cove and staring at the mountain of boxes Monique packed up to send abroad for him. A symbolic tower of everything that is him ready to be sent far away. His room felt like she had stripped all personality that was Dane from its very air, as though he never existed in this space. Even his smell was gone, and as I lay there on the uncovered mattress, I couldn’t move or leave, and sleep wouldn’t take me. Just a useless heavyweight of flesh tethered to the last place he dwelled and unable to move on.I feel like I am now existing in an eternal zombie state, caught between numb and excruciating pain at any given moment, and my mind is anywhere but on school. But I know I cannot keep existing this way. Dragging out and holding onto nothing.

“I know, I know…I’m working on it. I never thought your mom would take it as badly as she is and dig her heels in. I’m sorry it seems like we’re stalling but it’s just you know how she can be. She needs time to calm down and change her mind.” Bryan looks weary all of a sudden, and now my anger dims a slight tiny fraction at his attempts to douse my fire, I cannot deny that he seems unnaturally pale today.A tiny hint of empathy and maybe even concern peeks out, and I try and push it back down into the pits of hell and remind myself that these two humans deserve anything they are going through. I don’t want to feel anything for either of them.“Maybe you should ask yourself why she is stalling….maybe you need that test as much as I do.” I point out, appraising his expression and seeing real fatigue etched on his face for the first time in as long as I can remember, and I wonder how much of a mental toll it's taking on him, too. Maybe he does have doubts, or maybe losing Dane this way h

Overwhelming sadness strangles me that all it could have taken was him staying for one part of this to come out unscathed. Waiting with me while we figured this out and got the tests together. If we had any sense, we would have just had his DNA tested with mine. To see we were not brother and sister in those first few days. But he left me.“It’s not mine, it’s his… give it to him.” I nod Dane’s way, unable to look at him, unable to see them together now I know for sure we are not related. We are so broken.I don’t wait for a response. Pulling my bag against me and clutching my cell to my chest. I can’t.A second wave of tears and anger mixed up in a confusing mishmash hurts my chest and ribs and makes breathing harder, so I feel like I am dying. I fast walk to the elevators without looking back and frantic stab at the button of the nearest one. Relieved when it opens right away.I can’t make myself look their way, but turning to push the ground floor button, I accidentally catch sight

I must sit in numbed shock for minutes as tears pour down my face and then zone back into reality and the fact I am still sitting in this sterile room. My mind was lost to some weird state of nothing as I try to digest what I am reading and flick through the papers again as though I had hallucinated it. I can’t swallow it down as this dream state of weirdness pushes me to feel like I am floating in some dizzy haze. There it is in red ink, so bold you cannot miss it or the meaning. There is no mistake and no other way to interpret it. It even states on the cover sheet what your results mean, and right there, it says a zero percent score means no blood relation to your test subject.I let out a sob of sheer devastation. Not because I’m sad that he’s not but because of everything I have suffered in these last weeks. It’s relief and yet also resentment and heartbreak all rolled into one. Self-pity for what I have endured.Every stab at my heart, every crumbling of my soul and mental state

“Mom is running late today?” I point out while packing away Bryan’s dishes from lunch. Slightly irritated by it. Eyes on the clock as I don’t want a repeat of yesterday and running into that jerk and his shadow again. I have decided that for my own mental state Dane is right and we should not intend to ever cross paths. Seeing him causes more harm than good and it reminds me everytime that I am no further forward in getting over him.My day, after seeing him, always goes to shit, and my ongoing crappy insomnia is so much worse now we are under the same sky. I might never sleep again. I’m just so emotionally exhausted by all of this and wish I could fall asleep and wake up when I am over it.“She’s been tired, maybe just on slow-mo. She should take more time to relax.”“Well she better hurry up as they are taking you for your scans and assessment in about five minutes. She’s normally here by now.” Not to mention Dane is due in twenty and I wanted to be long gone.“You don’t need to sta

Hearing Bryan about to out me is all the push I need, not wanting it to seem like I am hiding, and I yank the curtain back to reveal myself. Plastering on a blank expression cool manner and lift my chin a little higher. Eyes straight to Bryan to ensure I don’t stray their way completely, blanking the two figures lingering closely near his bed.Seeing them in my peripheral is enough. The sickening lurch of pain reminds me that it never goes away, even when I stop noticing it as much.“All done and tidy. My mom won’t moan about me putting them in the wrong place.”I catch the slight movement of surprise out of the corner of my eye and the way Hannah slides back to hide behind Dane at seeing me appear. Dane’s head had jerked my way before he quickly averted it, and I caught the subtle gasp from one of them.“Um…Hi, Kayla. You look pretty.” Hannah whimpers like some terrified child who has just come face to face with the grumpy old witch of the village. Fake compliments to try and befrien

“Lunch is served.” I smile brightly as I unpack Monique's food onto Bryan’s bed tray and set them out like a gourmet restaurant, napkins, and fresh cutlery included. Monique has it in her head that despite the hospital supplying him with meals, he will never get better if it’s not her cooking. So it’s my unofficial job to deliver three meals a day.“This looks delicious, thank Monique from the bottom of my heart. Tell her I can feel the effects already. You all spoil me.” Bryan shifts to pull himself higher in his upright position, looking better today with more color on his face. Day by day, a return slowly of the man we love and know so well.I can admit that now he seems more like his old self. That sense of heavy dread weighing on my heart every second has lessened somewhat. He is one less stress for me, one less tragedy of my life. I guess having a truce with my mom is second. We may not be okay by a long run, but not having to spit venom at her any time she gets close has been

His eyes lock on mine for a millisecond, registering shock at my presence, halting him to a sudden stop. He averts them to his feet, shuffling slightly backward to block the doorway with his arms outstretched, but whoever is behind him that he’s attempting to hinder shunts him forward with an ouch as they hit him. He doesn’t do a good job of stopping them from getting in.“Ouch…why did you stop? Why are you blocking me?” It’s a young feminine voice, and she slides under his arm and past him, giving him a weirdly confused glance as though questioning the sudden statue-like posture in the open doorway. I catch it from her side view, growing insanely jealous as she places a hand on his arm to bring it down from the door frame.Molten lava spikes in my belly at her very handsy motions. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that this teen girl dressed in a similar preppy, neat, and almost upper-class style with a sleek ponytail and fresh face is Hannah. Her color scheme seems to de

“I’ll go to the pharmacy for some toiletries and bits and pieces while Bryan sleeps. You head off home for now, and I’ll see you this evening.” My mom is up and tidying Bryan’s new private room after we settled him in here, and now I am getting the strong vibes she wants me to leave. I know it’s because Dane is coming. I overheard Mom and Bryan earlier saying Dane would come around eleven after he was on a ward, and it’s almost that time. My mom thinks she’s being sly about the hints that I should go home for lunch but I am not leaving until I at least see him once. I want that face-to-face, that moment of closure. To see the person who vanished from my life so I can put a lid on what we were. I guess a part of me wants to see for myself if he has suffered, too. Because I will know by looking at him, I will be able to tell with one encounter whether he even missed me a little bit. I need it to quieten to anger in my head and the ache in my heart.Just once. I’m so groggy when I wake up after finally passing out when I got home. I have no idea what time it is or what day it is, yet my bedroom is oddly bright. Last night at the hospital feels like a distant dream, and as I toss and turn to get myself out of bed, I catch sight of my alarm clock and pause in a shocked gasp. It’s four pm.I have slept for almost twelve hours. I have no idea how I even did that and Bryan will wonder why no one is there for his waking up. He probably woke up already.“What the fuck?” I shoot up, almost falling off the edge of my bed in sleepy clumsiness, aware that visiting at the hospital is at nine am, and I was sure I had set my reminder to wake me up. I don’t know if I slept through it or if, in my stupor last night, I didn’t save the timer.“Mom!!” I race into the hall, stumbling and banging into the wall because despite my energetic, alert wake-up, my body has yet to catch up. Calling frantically to rouse her, too, as I know she will kick herself for bein

“Here, drink something.” Tyler's gentle coaxing as he presses a warm cup into my hand snaps me out of my zombie state of staring at the blank hospital wall, and I blink back into reality. I wasn't even aware I was zoned out on another plain, as I don’t recall any thoughts. I don’t even know how long I was sitting immobile like this, unaware of the people around me.He's crouching in front of me, assessing my mental state, appearance, and expression and nods off towards my mom and Monique in the chairs across the room where they are now silent. My mom had been crying for the first hour here, but it seems she, too, has hit the silent numb. Waiting endlessly like we are. My mom looks shellshocked, pale, and lifeless as Monique cradles her in like she’s the child in this. Sitting a few feet away because of a gap in the chair layout.I wouldn’t expect anything else from my mom. I have always parented myself. Whenever I needed someone to lean on, it was him we should not name.“You all look
