Matt Wolffe.
He was called the Wolf of the business world. He tore his competitors apart, bought people out of business, and outbid his rivals for artworks by renowned artists, and business inventions. There was no stopping him as he rose to the high ranks of business like his father before him. He quenched the rumors that doubted his ability to step into Zach Wolffe's shoes and before the age of 26 his name was called with respect. Many times he appeared in the top 10 successful businessmen in top magazines and social columns. As much as he was known for his unrivaled achievements in the business world, he was also popular among the ladies of high society. Among them, he was known as the Wolf of hearts. He captured the hearts of many and left them broken after short flings. What made him popular among the ladies was his ability to treat his women with utmost respect and affection. He made them feel special and when he became bored of them he let them go with much to compensate their breakup. And he loved that they understood when to let go. They never got attached and he never wanted any attachment with them. Mentioned 3 times as one of the most handsome men in the Love and Times magazine he once mentioned that his best trait was his ability to manage his social life and his business efficiently and if ladies found that attractive then who was he to say no. Since the media could not keep his face off of gossip columns, his face appeared in them almost every year, especially when he appeared with a new woman in his life. And he made sure to give his best smile to the paparazzi.
But Matt was not smiling today. His dark brows hung low over cold blue eyes that promised wrath. He walked up to Ricky and Luis’s club. A line of club-goers stood outside the door in the cold waiting for a chance to be let inside. He passed the line and approached the 6’5 bouncer at the entrance. The man started to block the entrance until he recognized Matt and he stepped aside for him to enter.
The club was lit with red and blue lights, the lights were not bright enough to reveal his face and he liked it like that. He wasn’t here for pleasure tonight. The party-goers sat around tables arranged to accommodate 5 people, some stood by the bar drinking and talking. The music was loud and a couple of people were dancing on the dancefloor. A girl serving drinks on a small silver tray approached him.
“What can I get you, honey?”
“Is Ricky here?” he demanded.
The girl took in his expensive clothing. He looked out of place with his white shirt, dark blue suit and heavy coat that fell to his feet. She cocked her head to the side and indicated a table at the far end of the room.
“Come. I’ll call him over.”
He went with her and sat by the wall. He didn’t bother to remove his coat since he wasn’t staying for too long. The party-goers were invisible to him as he was invisible to them.
“Matthew.”
He resisted a groan at the sound of his full name being called.
“Ricky.”
The short, middle-aged man with a balding sport in the middle of his head and a large scar across his nose approached the table and sat opposite him.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”
“I had to come by myself since you wouldn’t give Jamie any useful information,” Matt said in a hard voice.
Ricky looked behind, leaned in and lowered his voice. “That is because I do not have anything useful to tell him. I already told you to put your mind at ease. I will get you what you need.”
“I need it as fast as possible. If the deals are closed before I make an offer to buy I will make you pay for it. And I will hunt you down and won’t stop until you do.”
Ricky visibly swallowed. He knew how serious Matt was. The man never made empty threats. But the assignment Matt had given him was a difficult one. In the past, it had been easy to get information on Matthew’s rivals but this one rival lived a very secretive and private life.
“I have my girls working on it. I put Cheryl in charge of it and you know Cheryl never fails.”
Matt had to agree with that. The beautiful tall blonde was an expert at uncovering even the most carefully guarded secrets. Even he was wary of her abilities.
“I will give you an extension of two weeks. Send expenses through my secretary and if there’s anything else needed to complete this assignment let me know.”
“Of course.” Ricky rubbed his thick hands together and smiled. “Now how about a drink eh? It’s on the house.”
“I don’t want a damn drink. I wasn’t planning to visit until Jamie called to tell him he hadn’t received anything useful from you. Ricky, I trust you, don’t disappoint me.”
“I have never disappointed you before,” Ricky said. He caught the eye of one of the serving girls and waved her over, gave her orders for drinks for both him and Matt and turned to face Matt again. “You should have something before you go. Consider it a pre-victory celebration.”
Matt sat back in the chair and folded his arms. He wanted very much to go home and relax with a bottle of wine. Maybe call Penny and tell her to come over but he didn’t want to turn down Ricky’s offer, if he did the man would think he didn’t trust him and would become wary of him.
As the serving girl arrived with two glasses and a bottle of whiskey a loud cry rent the air.
“Copycats!”
The club burst into hoots, applause and cheers. He looked up to see a group of 5 people climb the stage.
“You employ live bands now?”
Ricky shook his head. “No, these ones sing for fun.”
Copycats. He never heard of them before. What kind of name was Copycats?
“Hello everybody!”
Matt sat up to see a redhead with the sheerest gown ever standing in front of the mic with her hands raised as the crowd cheered. The rest of the band was setting up the instruments.
“We have something different for you tonight. We are going to put you in the mood, you know what I mean?” she wagged her brows and the crowd cheered louder. The clubbers sitting were getting up from their seats one after the other to join those already on the dancefloor.
“Are they good?” he asked.
“Very good,” Ricky said with pride. “You should hear their lead singer.”
Matt narrowed his eyes at the redhead in doubt. She looked more like she was scanning the crowd for a potential bed partner than she was eager to sing. But he believed Ricky and leaned back in his seat to listen.
“Hold your man, hold your woman because you guys are about to witness the best musical foreplay ever!”
As the crowd cheered the instrumental part of the band started to play the beginning of a song that sounded vaguely familiar to him. Just then his phone vibrated in the pocket of his coat. Frowning he pulled it out and saw the caller ID of his secretary. He started to pick the call when the first lyrics of the song rang clear in the room.
There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that’s the high and not the pill.
His eyes wide at the sultry, throaty voice, he looked up. And he saw her.
As Sophia sang into the mic she couldn’t help but think about the look on Nate’s face when he held her back before they took the stage and told her he had something he wanted to say to her. The look on his face was different but she knew what it was he wanted to talk about. She just wished he would let it go. She wasn’t ready to let anyone in yet. Maybe not ever. She wished she could explain why she felt that way but he wouldn’t understand even if she tried. Besides, she wasn’t ready to unload her insecurities on him. He and everyone else saw her as strong, mature, strong-willed but she feared what they would think if they saw the real her. The real Sophia that held everyone away from herself. As best as she could she pushed her worries aside. She would just have to let Nate know once and for all that she wasn’t the one for him, if she had to hurt his feelings to do so then so be it. Like always, singing Seal’s Kiss from a rose did things to her. Made her yearn for something she coul
Matt Wolffe seldom worked on Saturdays. Saturdays were for social activities and he honored every social invite religiously. Acquaintances were made at such social events and for someone like him, they presented opportunities to strike business deals. Today was not one of those days, however. His chauffeur was waiting outside with the door of his car open. He slid into the back seat. The chauffeur moved round the back of the car and took the driver’s seat. This was a visit to the only father figure in his life. Simone Pierce. As a child under the iron hand of his father, he was forced out of his comfort and thrown into the jungle of business. At age 18, against his wish, Zach Wolffe forced him into business school. He was intelligent, graduated with good grades and was introduced to the business world. Groomed to take over his father’s banking-investment company, he was introduced to several of Zach’s colleagues and friends in business. When his father began
On Monday morning a frustrated Sophia walked into the section of the St. Peter’s hospital that held the lab. Passing by workers and a few patients she headed to the front desk and slapped her hand on the hardwood. The two ladies sitting behind the high desk barely glanced at her as they chatted about something.“Excuse me,” she said to get their attention. They kept talking.“Excuse me,” she said through gritted teeth. They looked up at her with bored eyes.“Yes?”Straining to keep her anger under control she said, “I brought the blood sample of one of my patients last week and I am yet to get the results of his test.”The one with low-cut curly hair gave her a droll glare before slowly moving to the monitor at the side of the desk. “Name?”“Sophia Blanc my patient’s name is Freddie.”The lady took a long time scrolling through the lists of name
Rosa narrowed her eyes at Sophia as she playfully glared at her. “You have been seeing a guy without my knowledge, Sophia?”Sophia opened her mouth to respond but just then the door swung open and Stella walked in about to say something but she stopped at the sight of the flowers. She looked between Rosa and Sophia.“What is going on here? What are we celebrating?”Rosa tilted her head discreetly at Sophia. Stella’s eyes widened.“You got flowers?” She asked as she closed the door behind her and approached Rosa’s table. “From Nate?” But she didn’t need to wait too long for an answer. She picked the card from the table, read it and her eyes stretched wider. “Matt Wolffe?!” she turned slowly to face Sophia. “Matt Wolffe?” she repeated.“Yes, Matt Wolffe…”“How the fuck did you meet Matt Wolffe, Sophia? You’re a herm
Matt was in a good mood. There was no drizzle today and his drive to his office was great. Looking out of the floor-to-ceiling glass window that overlooked the city from the twenty-fourth floor of the building complex that held his office and other firms he appreciated the view. The view was good. His excitement and light mood were from the good news he received from Simone. According to him, Ricky was clean, nothing shady about the man which meant that Ethan Lowe really lived a secretive life but nothing was hidden for too long, especially not from him. Ricky had called to inform him that Cheryl now had a lead on Ethan. She was getting cozy with him and he knew Cheryl very well, she was as beautiful as she was persuasive. If anyone could get him the information he needed on Lowe it was her.More than that he was looking forward to his date tonight. He had sent Lawrence, his secretary, on a very familiar assignment. Send a dress and large arrangements of flowers. Lawrence was
Sophia swallowed nervously as she tilted her head back slightly to look at him. He was tall and beautiful. The intensity of his blue gaze suddenly made her feel small. His dark suit added an air of danger to him, highlighting his broad shoulders and lean muscular form. It suddenly felt like she was seeing him for the first time. She had barely given him more than a glance at the club but she thought he was good-looking, now she felt her breath catch in her throat. When his gaze fell to her scrubs she suddenly felt conscious. This isn’t going to work, I should have at least worn something different. His smile waned and his eyes flew to hers again.“Leave now,” he said to the host who stood behind her. His voice was deep deceptive smooth. She heard the glass door open and close softly. They were alone.Matt walked around the table and held his hand to her. “Nice to finally meet you, Miss Blanc.”The last time this happen
“She’s holding out on us.”“Yes, she definitely is.”Sophia ignored both Stella and Rosa as she made reports on the patients’ files in front of her. Since they started their routine that morning they both tried to subtly get her to talk about her night with Matt Wolffe. She tactfully avoided them since there really was nothing to tell. But now with her schedule cleared she was finding it harder to avoid them especially since Stella decided to camp in her and Rosa’s office. Once she was done writing she went to drop the files off at the card/records desk where the reports would be transferred to the patients’ database. As soon as she came back she found Stella sitting at her desk with a mischievous glint in her eyes.“Spill.”“Spill what?” she laughed.“What happened last night? Come on! You promised you would give us the details now you’re being selfish with them. W
“Morning.” “Morning,” she replied with a smile as she walked down the hall where Stella’s office was located. The doors were identical, all painted white and the windows had identical shutters. She pushed open the fourth door. Stella shared the office with one of the specialist doctors. The room was lit with bright white lights like hers, there were medical charts on the wall, books and journals were arranged on a small shelf that was set against the wall beside the desk. There was another door to the right, it was open to reveal the stretcher used for medical examination of patients. Stella was sitting behind her desk looking blankly at an open magazine in front of her as though she was lost in thought. Since it was late morning the sun came in through the window highlighting her red hair. She looked up when Sophia stepped in. “Stella, I’m really sorry for what I said back there. I know it sounded like I was calling you a slut and I am sorry for that.” “Actually I should be apologi
Both women turned towards the voice, hearts pounding heavily in their chests. The muted sound of footsteps on the carpet drew closer until the figure in the shadows was standing in the circle of light coming from the slightly parted curtains. His wispy white hair was pulled into a sleek ponytail. His purple silk shirt was open at the neck to reveal parched red skin. He had a hand behind his back, his feet spread wide apart, the smile on his face friendly. Sophia tried to force herself to calm down. This was a friend, someone Matt knew. There was no reason to be scared of him…except that he wanted her dead. Matt’s mother took another step back, the terror on her face was apparent. “Simone. Pierce,” she breathed softly. Sophia stood where she was scrutinizing the man. The hand behind his back was slightly slumped at the shoulder which meant he was carrying something. A sudden chill ran through her as the shadow behind him showed exactly what he was carrying. A gun. She forced hers
Matt didn’t move when she came to stand in front of him. His shoulders sagged in defeat. This was a story he never heard before in all his life. He had sworn hatred for his mother not knowing her side of the story. And why shouldn’t he? All he knew was the side of a story his father fed him while he sent him off to business school. He knew he was an idiot to trust the scheming bastard but all he had was the words of a man desperate to see his son succeed him. If had gotten one call from his mother, just one to reassure him that everything he believed about her was not true…Unshed tears blurred his eyes and clogged his throat. His mother’s feather-light touch settled on his shoulder.“I am sorry, Matthew. I wish I had fought harder. I wish I had tried harder to save you. I wish I had sacrificed the last drop of my blood for you. I watched you grow from afar and feared you will turn into the very monster who tried to destroy us both and for a while, we were becoming like him, I’m just
Sophia sat dazed. She stared at the sheets but saw nothing, her mind raced with questions. Why was she targeted? Was Marie blackmailed to try to poison her? By who? Warm fingers came to rest beneath her chin. She looked up. Matt was bent close, the thin blanket the hospital supplied pooled on his waist. He looked into her eyes with clear blue eyes that had concern and love for her clear in them. “You are fine, that’s what matters,” he said reassuringly but his voice was hard as stone. “Why would Marie try to kill me?” she asked, her voice was low. “That’s what Will is going through find out.” He leaned closer. “I swear no one is going to hurt you as long as I am alive.” Her eyes shone with gratitude. She soon lowered her gaze again. “Who would do this?” He snorted. “I have many enemies, sweetie. In my line of work making rivals is inevitable. If I’m not looking over my shoulders constantly I would be dead.” “This is different. This feels so real…too close to home. Someone is out
Sophia sat beside Matt’s bed with her head bowed on the thin layers of sheets. The strong smell of disinfectant and antibiotics surrounded her. It was a smell she was used to after working in this hospital yet today she couldn’t endure the smell. It had nothing to do with the smell itself only the fact that she felt nauseous when the thought of Matt’s poisoning crossed her mind, which was often. She lifted her head to look at him for the thousandth time. His face was relaxed now, a healthy pallor had returned to his handsome face, yet his lips remained chapped and slightly discolored. However, his breathing was calmer now that the poison was purged out.Acetic acid. That was the poisonous trace found in the juice according to the lab reports.Praying in her heart that the doctors were right, that the poison hadn’t destroyed his organs, she touched his hand and held it in hers. Earlier, Lawrence had come to the hospital as soon as he heard the news. He waited and offered comfort while
Like the night before, Sophia and Matt spread out the available ingredients in the kitchen cabinets before deciding what to cook for me night. Matt put on some slow music. Between dancing in circles around each other, touching and feeling on each other, they finally got a meal prepared. They sat cross-legged in the living room with their plates and glasses of water.Sophia felt a warm glow in her chest as she watched Matt fork bites of food into his mouth. She could admit to herself that she had come a long way in terms of trusting and in just a short time too. She leaned her back against the sofa slowly twirling her fork in her hand. The music and Matt’s handsome face had her enchanted.“I love you.”Sophia paused. What?Matt stopped eating and looked up from his plate, his blue eyes were clear and honest. He was peering at her but with a new look in his eyes. There was honesty, then there was uncertainty.“I said I love you,” he repeated.Sophia’s mouth hung open as she watched Matt
“If you can have him over this morning that will be nice, thanks. Tell him it’s urgent.” Sophia sat on the couch munching on a plate of eggs and toast watching Matt talk into the phone. He was talking with Lawrence. She was finally able to get him to sleep an hour before Marie resumed her duties that morning. Now that he was awake and moving she knew he wouldn’t put off investigating his father’s death any longer. He paused for a while and frowned. Then he rolled his eyes skywards. “Yes, Lawrence it is I, Matt, speaking. What is wrong with you? Tell Will it’s urgent and if he can’t take the job find another private investigator please.” A second later he slid his phone into his pocket. “Can you believe Lawrence asked if it was really me talking on the phone?” he scoffed. “Probably because that’s the nicest you’ve ever spoken to him.” Marie came out of the kitchen with her eyes narrowed with suspicion. “What do you need a private investigator for?” she queried. “You are not in any s
Sophia woke up to a dark room, the remnants of a dream shrouded her in the darkness. It wasn’t the same kind of dream she feared every night. This time she was holding a degree in her hands and Abigail was yelling praises on one side, she could hear Matt whispering sweet and encouraging words, Stella was somewhere in the haze of her strange dream cheering her up. Was she the only student graduating?Suddenly someone grabbed her from behind and when she turned to look it was Matt but his eyes were wide and haunted. That was what had woken her up. Now that her senses were returning to her she realized that someone was indeed holding her arms tightly. Her heart began to pound. She was laying on her side so both of her hands were held in tight grips, shivers ran down her spine as a warm breath touched her skin. Suddenly the hold on her hands loosened.“Sophia?”Matt!Reaching over she quickly turned on the bedside lamp. When she turned around again Matt was sitting up in the bed staring a
Both sisters sat in the back of Matt’s car. It has taken some time and a long story cut short to fill Alfie in on the important details of why Sophia was now with a lookalike who was heavily pregnant and why she would be going with her to Matt’s condominium. Abigail had insisted that she “meets this Matt Wolffe who has stolen my baby sister away from me.”Too excited to say no Sophia had agreed. While both sisters hugged and cried Stella and Ms. Hart had walked in innocently holding each other. Sophia raised a brow at Stella and she shrugged innocently. When Stella put her arms around Sophia though a warm feeling enveloped her. Of all the members of the Copy Cats, Stella was the one she wasn’t closest with but these few months with her brought them closer and in Stella, she saw a friend she could trust.Abigail’s phone beeped. She retrieved it from her purse and peered at the screen. With a sound that was a cross between a groan and a chuckle, she put her phone away. “My husband is wo
By afternoon that day, Sophia got into the car with Alfie who for the first time was talkative to her. He talked about the traffic and Marie and everything else he could think about. After realizing she didn’t even have to make inputs in the conversation she sat back and let him talk to his heart’s content.A long drive later and they were standing in front of her apartment. She got out and made the stair trip to her part of the apartment. Ms. Hart’s door was closed and so was hers. But when she reached for her doorknob she was surprised to find it locked even after turning the key in the lock. Frowning she knocked. The sound of laughter rose inside and the sound of footsteps followed. The door was open and Stella was standing there with a wide smile on her face and tears streaming down her face. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her nails were freshly painted.“Hey you, welcome back.”Relieved that it was just Stella Sophia stepped in. “I didn’t think you’ll come back afte
