Chapter 6

last update Last Updated: 2022-04-15 00:40:18

As Sophia sang into the mic she couldn’t help but think about the look on Nate’s face when he held her back before they took the stage and told her he had something he wanted to say to her. The look on his face was different but she knew what it was he wanted to talk about. She just wished he would let it go. She wasn’t ready to let anyone in yet. Maybe not ever. She wished she could explain why she felt that way but he wouldn’t understand even if she tried. Besides, she wasn’t ready to unload her insecurities on him. He and everyone else saw her as strong, mature, strong-willed but she feared what they would think if they saw the real her. The real Sophia that held everyone away from herself.

As best as she could she pushed her worries aside. She would just have to let Nate know once and for all that she wasn’t the one for him, if she had to hurt his feelings to do so then so be it.

Like always, singing Seal’s Kiss from a rose did things to her. Made her yearn for something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say.

You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby.

Matt’s brows raised at the depth of her voice and the ranges she reached. The passion on her face as she sang was mesmerizing. The stage was raised in such a way that he could see her shorts that stopped mid-thigh. She swayed her hips slowly as she sang. He sucked in a deep breath as he watched. Oh, the things he would tell her if she came close enough.

The rhinestones dangling from her shorts reflected the lights and flashed, her top lifted when she raised her hand giving him a view of her slim waist.

He knew Ricky was studying him, he also knew that the old geezer could tell that he was drawn by the brown-skinned goddess that sang her soul out in a song that spoke of addictive love. She sang as though she could feel the lyrics of the song in her heart. Was she in love? Was her love in the crowd listening, grinning from ear to ear?

“Who is she?” he asked Ricky.

The man hid a knowing smile. “Sophia. She’s the lead singer for the group.” He turned around his seat to look at Sophia then turned back to Matt. “You will have to get in line for that one.”

Like hell he would.

He should be angry with himself that he stared long enough for Ricky to notice but he couldn’t care less. He was mesmerized by her slow dancing. He wasn’t the only one affected by her sensual voice, the clubbers were now dancing in tandem with her. Couples held each other as they swayed in time to the music.

Sophia.

A delicate name. She looked delicate.

As delicate as the rose she sang about.

She opened her eyes and scanned the crowd even though she couldn’t see the faces of people under the glare of the lights centered on the stage.

Much to his disappointment, the song finished too quickly and she flashed a pearly smile at the crowd that hooted and cheered.

“Will you be going back to your office now?”

Matt glared at Ricky and waved a dismissive hand at him. “I will leave whenever I want. You can leave now.”

He barely noticed Ricky leave, his eyes darted back to the delicate rose called Sophia. They were performing another song then another until they were too tired to do another. Laughing she and the other members of the band high-fived each other and stepped off the stage. Matt stood up ready to make his move when he saw her being pulled by one of the band members towards the backroom, a tall good-looking brunette. Curious he followed.

Sophia resisted the urge to pull her hand free from Nate’s hold. She was already going to hurt him tonight with the words she prepared to tell him so why not let him have this moment of peace before the storm?

He took her to the backroom to the place where Luis kept supplies. There he turned and faced and the look he gave her almost made her change her mind about telling him off. But she had to do this because she couldn’t bear to watch him pine for her when she did not return his feelings.

“Hi,” he said softly gazing at her with pure affection.

Sophia tried to smile but her face was frozen.

“Sophia,” he started drawing close to her as he held her hand gently in his. She looked away. “You look beautiful.”

She nodded.

“I know I have tried many times with you and you have turned me down but…” he stopped in front of her. “I can’t stay away from you. I can’t get you out of my head.”

Sophia shook her head. “You have to get me out of your head, Nate,” she said in a cold voice. “My answer hasn’t changed a bit. We can’t work out.”

“Why?” he demanded. “What is so wrong about us that you won’t give us a chance? Is it me?”

She started to say no but held herself. “Yes. Yes, Nate, it is. I’m sorry, I have tried to make it obvious to you every time you do this. I don’t have feelings for you and I’m sorry you feel something for me but I never asked you to feel them.” She snatched her hand from his and dared to look up at his face. His look of hurt there almost made her change her mind again. “You will find someone else, Nate. I know Stella and Rosa put you up to this and I’ll have a talk with them later. I want you to stop trying to ask me on dates. We are friends and let’s remain that.”

She turned to leave.

“What do you keep running from, Sophia?”

She stopped short at the question. When she spun to look at Nate again he was looking right at her with his hands shoved into his pocket. “What?”

“You are running away from something and I can tell. What is it?”

When she made no response he walked up to her, he didn’t make any attempt to hold her hand.

“I told Rosa that if you rejected me for the last time I will let you go but I am your friend, we have been friends since med school and I can tell. What it is?”

She sucked in a breath. “Nothing. I’m not running away from anything." She bit her lip. "We are friends?”

He nodded and smiled without a trace of malice. “Always.”

She smiled gratefully at him, happy that he wasn’t trying to question her further. “Thanks, Nate.” Maybe she should have just said no instead of trying to hurt his feelings in the first place. “I am so sorry for what I said. You are not a problem...”

He smiled. “I know. Can we go back and join the rest?”

“Actually I need a moment I will join you guys later.”

He nodded and went out. Sophia slumped against the wall and closed her eyes. Thank God Nate was understanding this time. She didn’t deserve him, he was a good guy with a good heart. There was no way she would live with herself if she hurt their friendship.

“Regretting your rejection already?”

Her head came up with a start. Her eyes fell on a tall imposing figure, he didn’t look familiar and neither did he look like he had been clubbing with his heavy wool coat and black leather designer shoes. She cocked a brow.

“You are?”

With a smile tipping up his full sensuous lips he held his hand out. “Matt Wolffe.”

She glanced down at his hand and back at his face. “Okay…”

“Sophia.” It was Rosa and her voice sounded close by.

Sophia glanced up at the stranger. “Nice meeting you Matt Wolffe. I’m sorry I have to meet my friends. See ya.”

Before he could say anything else she left the backroom, leaving his hand out.

Matt Wolffe seldom worked on Saturdays. Saturdays were for social activities and he honored every social invite religiously. Acquaintances were made at such social events and for someone like him, they presented opportunities to strike business deals. Today was not one of those days, however. His chauffeur was waiting outside with the door of his car open. He slid into the back seat. The chauffeur moved round the back of the car and took the driver’s seat. This was a visit to the only father figure in his life. Simone Pierce. As a child under the iron hand of his father, he was forced out of his comfort and thrown into the jungle of business. At age 18, against his wish, Zach Wolffe forced him into business school. He was intelligent, graduated with good grades and was introduced to the business world. Groomed to take over his father’s banking-investment company, he was introduced to several of Zach’s colleagues and friends in business. When his father began

They looked up at her with bored eyes.“Yes?”Straining to keep her anger under control she said, “I brought the blood sample of one of my patients last week and I am yet to get the results of his test.”The one with low-cut curly hair gave her a droll glare before slowly moving to the monitor at the side of the desk. “Name?”“Sophia Blanc my patient’s name is Freddie.”The lady took a long time scrolling through the lists of name

Rosa narrowed her eyes at Sophia as she playfully glared at her. “You have been seeing a guy without my knowledge, Sophia?”Sophia opened her mouth to respond but just then the door swung open and Stella walked in about to say something but she stopped at the sight of the flowers. She looked between Rosa and Sophia.“What is going on here? What are we celebrating?”Rosa tilted her head discreetly at Sophia. Stella’s eyes widened.“You got flowers?” She asked as she closed the door behind her and approached Rosa’s table. “From Nate?” But she didn’t need to wait too long for an answer. She picked the card from the table, read it and her eyes stretched wider. “Matt Wolffe?!” she turned slowly to face Sophia. “Matt Wolffe?” she repeated.“Yes, Matt Wolffe…”“How the fuck did you meet Matt Wolffe, Sophia? Matt was in a good mood. There was no drizzle today and his drive to his office was great. Looking out of the floor-to-ceiling glass window that overlooked the city from the twenty-fourth floor of the building complex that held his office and other firms he appreciated the view. The view was good. His excitement and light mood were from the good news he received from Simone. According to him, Ricky was clean, nothing shady about the man which meant that Ethan Lowe really lived a secretive life but nothing was hidden for too long, especially not from him. Ricky had called to inform him that Cheryl now had a lead on Ethan. She was getting cozy with him and he knew Cheryl very well, she was as beautiful as she was persuasive. If anyone could get him the information he needed on Lowe it was her.More than that he was looking forward to his date tonight. He had sent Lawrence, his secretary, on a very familiar assignment. Send a dress and large arrangements of flowers. Lawrence was

Sophia swallowed nervously as she tilted her head back slightly to look at him. He was tall and beautiful. The intensity of his blue gaze suddenly made her feel small. His dark suit added an air of danger to him, highlighting his broad shoulders and lean muscular form. It suddenly felt like she was seeing him for the first time. She had barely given him more than a glance at the club but she thought he was good-looking, now she felt her breath catch in her throat. When his gaze fell to her scrubs she suddenly felt conscious. This isn’t going to work, I should have at least worn something different. His smile waned and his eyes flew to hers again.“Leave now,” he said to the host who stood behind her. His voice was deep deceptive smooth. She heard the glass door open and close softly. “She’s holding out on us.”“Yes, she definitely is.”Sophia ignored both Stella and Rosa as she made reports on the patients’ files in front of her. Since they started their routine that morning they both tried to subtly get her to talk about her night with Matt Wolffe. She tactfully avoided them since there really was nothing to tell. But now with her schedule cleared she was finding it harder to avoid them especially since Stella decided to camp in her and Rosa’s office. Once she was done writing she went to drop the files off at the card/records desk where the reports would be transferred to the patients’ database. As soon as she came back she found Stella sitting at her desk with a mischievous glint in her eyes.“Spill.”“Spill what?” she laughed.“What happened last night? Come on! You promised you would give us the details now you’re being selfish with them. W

“Morning.” “Morning,” she replied with a smile as she walked down the hall where Stella’s office was located. The doors were identical, all painted white and the windows had identical shutters. She pushed open the fourth door. Stella shared the office with one of the specialist doctors. The room was lit with bright white lights like hers, there were medical charts on the wall, books and journals were arranged on a small shelf that was set against the wall beside the desk. There was another door to the right, it was open to reveal the stretcher used for medical examination of patients. Stella was sitting behind her desk looking blankly at an open magazine in front of her as though she was lost in thought. Since it was late morning the sun came in through the window highlighting her red hair. She looked up when Sophia stepped in. “Stella, I’m really sorry for what I said back there. I know it sounded like I was calling you a slut and I am sorry for that.” “Actually I should be apologi

What is he doing here? She was aware of his eyes on her as they left the room and walked into the hallway. She turned to him as soon as they were alone.“So, Mr. Wolffe, do you want to invest in the hospital, or are you here to invest in me?”He laughed. She was watching him with her hands crossed in front of her. She was beautiful under the glare of the lights above them and her eyes held the same challenging glare they did last night. He had cancelled his reservation at the hotel last night and skipped dinner much to the disappointment of his housekeeper who had prepared a meal for him regardless of his instructions not to. Both women turned towards the voice, hearts pounding heavily in their chests. The muted sound of footsteps on the carpet drew closer until the figure in the shadows was standing in the circle of light coming from the slightly parted curtains. His wispy white hair was pulled into a sleek ponytail. His purple silk shirt was open at the neck to reveal parched red skin. He had a hand behind his back, his feet spread wide apart, the smile on his face friendly. Sophia tried to force herself to calm down. This was a friend, someone Matt knew. There was no reason to be scared of him…except that he wanted her dead. Matt’s mother took another step back, the terror on her face was apparent. “Simone. Pierce,” she breathed softly. Sophia stood where she was scrutinizing the man. The hand behind his back was slightly slumped at the shoulder which meant he was carrying something. A sudden chill ran through her as the shadow behind him showed exactly what he was carrying. A gun. She forced hers

Matt didn’t move when she came to stand in front of him. His shoulders sagged in defeat. This was a story he never heard before in all his life. He had sworn hatred for his mother not knowing her side of the story. And why shouldn’t he? All he knew was the side of a story his father fed him while he sent him off to business school. He knew he was an idiot to trust the scheming bastard but all he had was the words of a man desperate to see his son succeed him. If had gotten one call from his mother, just one to reassure him that everything he believed about her was not true…Unshed tears blurred his eyes and clogged his throat. His mother’s feather-light touch settled on his shoulder.“I am sorry, Matthew. I wish I had fought harder. I wish I had tried harder to save you. I wish I had sacrificed the last drop of my blood for you. I watched you grow from afar and feared you will turn into the very monster who tried to destroy us both and for a while, we were becoming like him, I’m just

Sophia sat dazed. She stared at the sheets but saw nothing, her mind raced with questions. Why was she targeted? Was Marie blackmailed to try to poison her? By who? Warm fingers came to rest beneath her chin. She looked up. Matt was bent close, the thin blanket the hospital supplied pooled on his waist. He looked into her eyes with clear blue eyes that had concern and love for her clear in them. “You are fine, that’s what matters,” he said reassuringly but his voice was hard as stone. “Why would Marie try to kill me?” she asked, her voice was low. “That’s what Will is going through find out.” He leaned closer. “I swear no one is going to hurt you as long as I am alive.” Her eyes shone with gratitude. She soon lowered her gaze again. “Who would do this?” He snorted. “I have many enemies, sweetie. In my line of work making rivals is inevitable. If I’m not looking over my shoulders constantly I would be dead.” “This is different. This feels so real…too close to home. Someone is out

Sophia sat beside Matt’s bed with her head bowed on the thin layers of sheets. The strong smell of disinfectant and antibiotics surrounded her. It was a smell she was used to after working in this hospital yet today she couldn’t endure the smell. It had nothing to do with the smell itself only the fact that she felt nauseous when the thought of Matt’s poisoning crossed her mind, which was often. She lifted her head to look at him for the thousandth time. His face was relaxed now, a healthy pallor had returned to his handsome face, yet his lips remained chapped and slightly discolored. However, his breathing was calmer now that the poison was purged out.Acetic acid. That was the poisonous trace found in the juice according to the lab reports.Praying in her heart that the doctors were right, that the poison hadn’t destroyed his organs, she touched his hand and held it in hers. Like the night before, Sophia and Matt spread out the available ingredients in the kitchen cabinets before deciding what to cook for me night. Matt put on some slow music. Between dancing in circles around each other, touching and feeling on each other, they finally got a meal prepared. They sat cross-legged in the living room with their plates and glasses of water.Sophia felt a warm glow in her chest as she watched Matt fork bites of food into his mouth. She could admit to herself that she had come a long way in terms of trusting and in just a short time too. She leaned her back against the sofa slowly twirling her fork in her hand. The music and Matt’s handsome face had her enchanted.“I love you.”Sophia paused. What?Matt stopped eating and looked up from his plate, his blue eyes were clear and honest. He was peering at her but with a new look in his eyes. There was honesty, then there was uncertainty.“I said I love you,” he repeated.Sophia’s mouth hung open as she watched Matt

“If you can have him over this morning that will be nice, thanks. Tell him it’s urgent.” Sophia sat on the couch munching on a plate of eggs and toast watching Matt talk into the phone. He was talking with Lawrence. She was finally able to get him to sleep an hour before Marie resumed her duties that morning. Now that he was awake and moving she knew he wouldn’t put off investigating his father’s death any longer. He paused for a while and frowned. Then he rolled his eyes skywards. “Yes, Lawrence it is I, Matt, speaking. What is wrong with you? Tell Will it’s urgent and if he can’t take the job find another private investigator please.” A second later he slid his phone into his pocket. “Can you believe Lawrence asked if it was really me talking on the phone?” he scoffed. “Probably because that’s the nicest you’ve ever spoken to him.” Marie came out of the kitchen with her eyes narrowed with suspicion. “What do you need a private investigator for?” she queried. “You are not in any s

Was she the only student graduating?Suddenly someone grabbed her from behind and when she turned to look it was Matt but his eyes were wide and haunted. That was what had woken her up. Now that her senses were returning to her she realized that someone was indeed holding her arms tightly. Her heart began to pound. She was laying on her side so both of her hands were held in tight grips, shivers ran down her spine as a warm breath touched her skin. Suddenly the hold on her hands loosened.“Sophia?”Matt!Reaching over she quickly turned on the bedside lamp. When she turned around again Matt was sitting up in the bed staring a

Both sisters sat in the back of Matt’s car. It has taken some time and a long story cut short to fill Alfie in on the important details of why Sophia was now with a lookalike who was heavily pregnant and why she would be going with her to Matt’s condominium. Abigail had insisted that she “meets this Matt Wolffe who has stolen my baby sister away from me.”Too excited to say no Sophia had agreed. By afternoon that day, Sophia got into the car with Alfie who for the first time was talkative to her. He talked about the traffic and Marie and everything else he could think about. After realizing she didn’t even have to make inputs in the conversation she sat back and let him talk to his heart’s content.A long drive later and they were standing in front of her apartment. She got out and made the stair trip to her part of the apartment. Ms. Hart’s door was closed and so was hers. But when she reached for her doorknob she was surprised to find it locked even after turning the key in the lock. Frowning she knocked. The sound of laughter rose inside and the sound of footsteps followed. The door was open and Stella was standing there with a wide smile on her face and tears streaming down her face. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her nails were freshly painted.“Hey you, welcome back.”Relieved that it was just Stella Sophia stepped in. “I didn’t think you’ll come back afte
