The rest of the week went so fast. St. Peter’s hospital was as busy as always. Accident victims, minor accidents and the regular checkups kept Sophia on her heels as she went about the job she absolutely loved. But when the weekend came she welcomed it with open arms, ready to sit back and rest her feet. Mike, Nate, Stella and Rosa used what little free time they had to practice the beats to the songs they were to perform on Friday and Saturday nights.

The band was an escape for them all from all the hustle and bustle of their working days. Days filled with dying patients and tears of loved ones, of recovering patients and the tears of joy, of bad news after test results came from the lab and of the good ones. The Copycats loved their jobs at the hospital but they collectively breathed a sigh of relief when they came together to sing. In singing, they could let go of the tension of work and just pretend that the lives of people weren’t in their hands for two days.

As Sophia prepared a light dinner to eat before getting ready for the club on Friday evening her doorbell went off. Dropping the plate in her hand on the black marble counter she wiped her hands on a napkin and went to open the door. Stella and Rosa stood at the other side with their jackets held tight against their bodies to protect them from the cold evening. They had mischievous smiles on their faces and there was a bag between them hooked over Rosa's shoulder.

“You guys are early.”

“Hello to you too,” Stella said as she swept past Sophia and entered. She sniffed the air appreciatively. “That smells so good. What are you cooking? Save a plate for me.”

Sophia closed the door behind Rosa as she too stepped in and dropped the bag in her hand on the sofa.

Her apartment was simply done. Sophia had designed it herself. There was a lot of peach and blues in different hues all over the place making her sitting room look more like a huge pastel painting than a living area. When she moved in she did the painting of the entire house herself since she loved to keep her hands busy. She stripped the wallpapers of the 2 bedrooms and painted the walls in cream and peach colors. On the walls of the rooms, the living area and the short hallways she hung paintings that she made in her spare time. They were nothing elaborate, just splashes of paint across short canvases depending on her mood. Stella and Mike stayed just two blocks away and they had helped her with her furniture; a couch, two armchairs and a cane chair which she wove by herself. Rosa often joked that her apartment looked more like the home of a struggling artist than a nurse. Her puppy, a mixed breed of German shepherd and Caucasian shepherd rose from his bed that was set by the wall and went to Rosa wagging his tail.

“Why are you guys this early?”

“We thought we should do a little dress-up before leaving today, you know? A little girl time together,” Rosa said with a wink at Stella who was already making her way to the kitchen. She came out with a slice of bread covered in chocolate spread.

“What are planning to wear tonight?”

Sophia shrugged. “Anything good I guess. I was just going to throw something after my dinner.”

Stella shook her head and wagged a finger as she downed the rest of her bread. “You will be doing more than throwing something on tonight. Rosa and I here came up with the genius idea to dress you up.”

She looked between them with a raised brow. “What’s the occasion?”

“We are simply tired of looking fabulous while you while our lead singer dresses up as Mary Poppins. And there is nothing you say, Sophia, you are not getting out of this one today.”

Sophia sighed. “So you guys came over for me?”

“That’s right, sugar. And who knows? We might finally get you to hook up with someone new or someone who has been trying to get your attention for a while,” Rosa wagged her brows.

“If your mission is to hook me up with Nate you both have failed miserably,” Sophia said with a laugh. “I can’t believe you guys aren’t tired already.”

Rosa stood up and went over to Sophia to hold her shoulders. “We will never be tired as long as you are alive Soph and until we succeed in getting you out of these shackles of singleness. Now come and sit let Stella and I get to work.”

Every argument she tried to come up with to convince them otherwise failed. Before long Stella was eating her dinner and Rosa was convincing her to try clothes after clothes from the bag that she dropped on the sofa. They decided that her hair should be pressed and straightened and it fell freely down her shoulders. When it came to choosing clothes she had to fight off Stella who was trying to get her to wear a short gown of sheer fabric and thin straps for arms.

“I’m going to be up on a stage, the last thing I need is someone peeping up my ass,” she argued.

“That’s the whole point of it! The stage is not even that high."

“Nuh-uh, you are not going to get me in that. How about this?” she picked up white shorts with dripping rhinestones around the hem and the pockets and a plain red cotton shirt.

Stella exchanged a worried look with Rosa. “Nope. The shorts stay but the shirt has to go.” Rosa picked a pink high neck crop top. “This is better.”

Against her argument they helped her wear it and chose low-heeled sandals that matched the shorts for her, Stella decided some hoops would complete the look. When they were done dressing her Rosa touched up her makeup and pulled her dark brown hair into a high ponytail. As they went out of the apartment and stepped into the street Sophia shook her head at her best friends.

“You guys are just the worst.”

“Thank you,” they replied together with Rosa slapping her butt.

“Nothing is going to happen between Nate and me," Sophia said for the last time.

“Then forget Nate. Catch some other guy’s eyes and have fun tonight.”

On Monday morning a frustrated Sophia walked into the section of the St. Peter’s hospital that held the lab. Passing by workers and a few patients she headed to the front desk and slapped her hand on the hardwood. The two ladies sitting behind the high desk barely glanced at her as they chatted about something.“Excuse me,” she said to get their attention. They kept talking.“Excuse me,” she said through gritted teeth. They looked up at her with bored eyes.“Yes?”Straining to keep her anger under control she said, “I brought the blood sample of one of my patients last week and I am yet to get the results of his test.”The one with low-cut curly hair gave her a droll glare before slowly moving to the monitor at the side of the desk. “Name?”“Sophia Blanc my patient’s name is Freddie.”The lady took a long time scrolling through the lists of name

Rosa narrowed her eyes at Sophia as she playfully glared at her. “You have been seeing a guy without my knowledge, Sophia?”Sophia opened her mouth to respond but just then the door swung open and Stella walked in about to say something but she stopped at the sight of the flowers. She looked between Rosa and Sophia.“What is going on here? What are we celebrating?”Rosa tilted her head discreetly at Sophia. Stella’s eyes widened.“You got flowers?” She asked as she closed the door behind her and approached Rosa’s table. “From Nate?” But she didn’t need to wait too long for an answer. She picked the card from the table, read it and her eyes stretched wider. “Matt Wolffe?!” she turned slowly to face Sophia. “Matt Wolffe?” she repeated.“Yes, Matt Wolffe…”“How the fuck did you meet Matt Wolffe, Sophia? Matt was in a good mood. There was no drizzle today and his drive to his office was great. Looking out of the floor-to-ceiling glass window that overlooked the city from the twenty-fourth floor of the building complex that held his office and other firms he appreciated the view. The view was good. His excitement and light mood were from the good news he received from Simone. According to him, Ricky was clean, nothing shady about the man which meant that Ethan Lowe really lived a secretive life but nothing was hidden for too long, especially not from him. Ricky had called to inform him that Cheryl now had a lead on Ethan. She was getting cozy with him and he knew Cheryl very well, she was as beautiful as she was persuasive. If anyone could get him the information he needed on Lowe it was her.More than that he was looking forward to his date tonight. He had sent Lawrence, his secretary, on a very familiar assignment. Sophia swallowed nervously as she tilted her head back slightly to look at him. He was tall and beautiful. The intensity of his blue gaze suddenly made her feel small. His dark suit added an air of danger to him, highlighting his broad shoulders and lean muscular form. It suddenly felt like she was seeing him for the first time. She had barely given him more than a glance at the club but she thought he was good-looking, now she felt her breath catch in her throat. When his gaze fell to her scrubs she suddenly felt conscious. This isn’t going to work, I should have at least worn something different. His smile waned and his eyes flew to hers again.“Leave now,” he said to the host who stood behind her. His voice was deep deceptive smooth. She heard the glass door open and close softly. They were alone.Matt walked around the table and held his hand to her. “Nice to finally meet you, Miss Blanc.”The last time this happen

“She’s holding out on us.”“Yes, she definitely is.”Sophia ignored both Stella and Rosa as she made reports on the patients’ files in front of her. Since they started their routine that morning they both tried to subtly get her to talk about her night with Matt Wolffe. She tactfully avoided them since there really was nothing to tell. But now with her schedule cleared she was finding it harder to avoid them especially since Stella decided to camp in her and Rosa’s office. Once she was done writing she went to drop the files off at the card/records desk where the reports would be transferred to the patients’ database. As soon as she came back she found Stella sitting at her desk with a mischievous glint in her eyes.“Spill.”“Spill what?” she laughed.“What happened last night? Come on! You promised you would give us the details now you’re being selfish with them. W

Both women turned towards the voice, hearts pounding heavily in their chests. The muted sound of footsteps on the carpet drew closer until the figure in the shadows was standing in the circle of light coming from the slightly parted curtains. His wispy white hair was pulled into a sleek ponytail. His purple silk shirt was open at the neck to reveal parched red skin. He had a hand behind his back, his feet spread wide apart, the smile on his face friendly. Sophia tried to force herself to calm down. This was a friend, someone Matt knew. There was no reason to be scared of him…except that he wanted her dead. Matt’s mother took another step back, the terror on her face was apparent. “Simone. Pierce,” she breathed softly. Sophia stood where she was scrutinizing the man. The hand behind his back was slightly slumped at the shoulder which meant he was carrying something. A sudden chill ran through her as the shadow behind him showed exactly what he was carrying. A gun. She forced hers

Matt didn’t move when she came to stand in front of him. His shoulders sagged in defeat. This was a story he never heard before in all his life. He had sworn hatred for his mother not knowing her side of the story. And why shouldn’t he? All he knew was the side of a story his father fed him while he sent him off to business school. He knew he was an idiot to trust the scheming bastard but all he had was the words of a man desperate to see his son succeed him. If had gotten one call from his mother, just one to reassure him that everything he believed about her was not true…Unshed tears blurred his eyes and clogged his throat. His mother’s feather-light touch settled on his shoulder.“I am sorry, Matthew. I wish I had fought harder. I wish I had tried harder to save you. I wish I had sacrificed the last drop of my blood for you. I watched you grow from afar and feared you will turn into the very monster who tried to destroy us both and for a while, we were becoming like him, I’m just

Sophia sat dazed. She stared at the sheets but saw nothing, her mind raced with questions. Why was she targeted? Was Marie blackmailed to try to poison her? By who? Warm fingers came to rest beneath her chin. She looked up. Matt was bent close, the thin blanket the hospital supplied pooled on his waist. He looked into her eyes with clear blue eyes that had concern and love for her clear in them. “You are fine, that’s what matters,” he said reassuringly but his voice was hard as stone. “Why would Marie try to kill me?” she asked, her voice was low. “That’s what Will is going through find out.” He leaned closer. “I swear no one is going to hurt you as long as I am alive.” Her eyes shone with gratitude. She soon lowered her gaze again. “Who would do this?” He snorted. “I have many enemies, sweetie. In my line of work making rivals is inevitable. If I’m not looking over my shoulders constantly I would be dead.” “This is different. This feels so real…too close to home. Someone is out

Sophia sat beside Matt’s bed with her head bowed on the thin layers of sheets. The strong smell of disinfectant and antibiotics surrounded her. It was a smell she was used to after working in this hospital yet today she couldn’t endure the smell. It had nothing to do with the smell itself only the fact that she felt nauseous when the thought of Matt’s poisoning crossed her mind, which was often. She lifted her head to look at him for the thousandth time. His face was relaxed now, a healthy pallor had returned to his handsome face, yet his lips remained chapped and slightly discolored. However, his breathing was calmer now that the poison was purged out.Acetic acid. That was the poisonous trace found in the juice according to the lab reports.Praying in her heart that the doctors were right, that the poison hadn’t destroyed his organs, she touched his hand and held it in hers. Like the night before, Sophia and Matt spread out the available ingredients in the kitchen cabinets before deciding what to cook for me night. Matt put on some slow music. Between dancing in circles around each other, touching and feeling on each other, they finally got a meal prepared. They sat cross-legged in the living room with their plates and glasses of water.Sophia felt a warm glow in her chest as she watched Matt fork bites of food into his mouth. She could admit to herself that she had come a long way in terms of trusting and in just a short time too. She leaned her back against the sofa slowly twirling her fork in her hand. The music and Matt’s handsome face had her enchanted.“I love you.”Sophia paused. What?Matt stopped eating and looked up from his plate, his blue eyes were clear and honest. “If you can have him over this morning that will be nice, thanks. Tell him it’s urgent.” Sophia sat on the couch munching on a plate of eggs and toast watching Matt talk into the phone. He was talking with Lawrence. She was finally able to get him to sleep an hour before Marie resumed her duties that morning. Now that he was awake and moving she knew he wouldn’t put off investigating his father’s death any longer. He paused for a while and frowned. Then he rolled his eyes skywards. “Yes, Lawrence it is I, Matt, speaking. What is wrong with you? Tell Will it’s urgent and if he can’t take the job find another private investigator please.” A second later he slid his phone into his pocket. “Can you believe Lawrence asked if it was really me talking on the phone?” he scoffed. “Probably because that’s the nicest you’ve ever spoken to him.” Marie came out of the kitchen with her eyes narrowed with suspicion. “What do you need a private investigator for?” she queried. “You are not in any s

By afternoon that day, Sophia got into the car with Alfie who for the first time was talkative to her. He talked about the traffic and Marie and everything else he could think about. After realizing she didn’t even have to make inputs in the conversation she sat back and let him talk to his heart’s content.A long drive later and they were standing in front of her apartment. She got out and made the stair trip to her part of the apartment. Ms. Hart’s door was closed and so was hers. But when she reached for her doorknob she was surprised to find it locked even after turning the key in the lock. Frowning she knocked. The sound of laughter rose inside and the sound of footsteps followed. The door was open and Stella was standing there with a wide smile on her face and tears streaming down her face. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her nails were freshly painted.“Hey you, welcome back.”Relieved that it was just Stella Sophia stepped in. “I didn’t think you’ll come back afte
