Before I allow myself to look at the time again, I tap my fingers on my thigh rhythmically and count to twenty in my head. At this point, it has been at least ten minutes since I set the dishes on the table, and trust me when I say that I have absolutely no desire to return to the table. I drew a long breath and turned around to go back.

“Is this one okay?” I asked, lifting the unknown brand of Pinot Grigio and showing Gail. I have no idea why I’m wasting my time showing it to her. It’s just a bottle of wine. But at least for humanity’s sake, I wanted to get what she likes since it’s her birthday, or at least what Mr. Lombardi likes, so I could get out of this place as soon as possible.
