"Where do you want to be in 5 years, Holly?"
The last panel interview for Talon Tech, run by Adam and Noah Talon, was going well and they gave me a softball question. This was one of those moments where everything seems to come together in life and just fall into place. I'd prepared for this question. The dream job was in my grasp. I smiled and sat up confidently at Mindy and Carter who had been two out of the three panelists I was supposed to interview for today.
"My goal in 5-years is to be the best..."
The heavy door opened loudly interrupting me mid-sentence. I was sitting with my back to it and had the pleasure of two potential colleagues conducting the interview even though I was supposed to meet my potential boss today.
The door slammed shut, I could hear some shuffling, and a booming male voice talking on his headphones that were almost too small to notice.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." I heard Adam Talon, one of the two Talon brothers, for the first time. "No. Absolutely not. You do that and you are fired. Fired. Do you hear me? Good. Now go fix it."
Unlike his employees, Adam decided to take the seat right next to me, invading my personal space, even though we were in a large conference room and it clearly was set up for them to interview me as a panel.
"So what did I miss? Is she a good find or is my brother just trying yanking my chain?"
What a prick. I went to tell him off but of course like every good bad boy, he was gorgeous. We are talking tall, tan like he just came back from a week in Hawaii, straight light brown hair that looked almost Bohemian. Maybe Adam just got back from an island getaway because his hair was longer than most in corporate America and he even had a beard that looked a little unkempt. If he wasn't wearing a charcoal grey suit with what looked like brand new shiny black shoes, a white crisp collared shirt and a black tie, I'd say he didn't look the part. But when I went to say something his hazel eyes pierced through me and I forgot my own name. Let alone my answer to his colleagues most recent question.
"We were just finishing up when you walked in, sir." Mindy's voice sounded like she went from co-worker to sex kitten. She hadn't given me any vibes of being a rule breaker but I also hadn't seen this man before. He woke up my ovaries. Damn, was he wearing some sort of pheromone or musk cologne to turn women on?
"She was just going to answer." And men. Carter was totally flirting with me when we walked in but now his brown doe-eyes are on the man next to me.
Adam cocked his head as he looked at me right in the eyes. Having prolonged direct eye contact with those hazel eyes of his was intimidating.
The room went quiet. You could hear a pin drop.
What was the question again?
"Does she speak?" He jokingly whispered to his colleagues. The three of them giggled breaking me from his spell.
"Yes, she does. Fluent in two languages, which you would have known if you showed up to my interview on time." Take that pretty boy!
I'm usually quiet as a church mouse but so was Mindy a few minutes ago and now she's playing with her hair and showing off her cleavage making me wonder if this is an office or a brothel.
"Okay Ms..."
Great. Adam Talon didn't even know my name. Good because he doesn't need to know it.
"Doesn't matter."
"Miss Doesn't Matter, are you related to none of your damn business?" He stood up when I did brushing up against me.
I wanted to say it's none of your damn business but he got me there.
"Mr. Talon?" He nodded. "I don't want to work for your company but thank you for the complimentary free cup of crappy coffee. I'm sure your hard working employees appreciate it." I packed my XL purse hard leather Dooney & Bourke handbag, pushing my notepad, pen and MacBook Pro quickly so I could walk out that stupid heavy, loud door.
I felt a hand grab my upper arm as I made a run for it. It was a big hand. Even through my blouse I could feel how large and hot his hands were.
"Wait. Woah. Hold on a second there Ms? What the hell is her name?!" He turned his head back to Mindy and Carter while I tried to tug out of his grip. Every tug he held me tighter. Snapping his fingers at the two people I thought I might end up eating lunch with when I started here, they had no idea.
"Ms. O'Neill. Ms. Holly O'Neill. May I leave now?"
"No, you may not but Mindy and Carter are dismissed." His eyes never left mine. "Now."
They gathered up their stuff and bolted towards the door. He definitely had a commanding voice, but I'm from West Orange New Jersey. The land of the loud, booming, gruff male voice. I worked in New York City at a well known technology company before ending up in Colorado Springs. The real estate was cheap and the jobs were plentiful. I couldn't afford a loft by myself and here I owned a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom house.
The heavy doors shut and I was stuck up against a six foot something, strong, mouth-wateringly handsome man.
"Excuse me?"
"Let me guess, New York right?" Adam's lip twitched up into a smug look that I wanted to slap off of his face. But he was right.
He let go of my arm after he slowly sat us back down in our chairs. I couldn't relax but he did. Just like every macho rich guy working in the city. I was told people were nicer out here but I guess the rest of the East Coast followed me here, or the other way around.
"New Jersey. But I worked in the city. Four years at Square before moving out here for the abundant opportunities." Why was I telling him this?
"Impressive." I hated beards, especially ones that looked like they could some taming, but when Noah touched his, my eyes were glued to it. I licked my lips and just watched his hand stroke his Bohemian beard. "My eyes are up here sweetheart."
His voice had a Southern twang to it; he had accidently let his accent slipped out.
"Ha. Where are you from? 'Cause it sure ain't above the Mason Dixon line."
"Tennessee originally, Texas, and now Colorado. My accent slips sometimes. Rarely though." His eyes were squinted. He definitely didn't give me the usual male gaze lingering on my chest. Honestly his eyes never seemed to leave my own.
"When can you start?"
"What?" This guy cannot be serious right now.
"You got the job. When can you start? Monday work?" It's Friday.
"I just told you I'm not interested in the job." I snapped back.
"Hmm well let's see, you've gone through multiple hours of interviews, dressed up a bit more than office casual, and were interviewing for the position until I walked in, so I'd say you do want the job. You don't want me."
He seemed hurt. Maybe he was one of those people that had a need for people to constantly like them, but that didn't add up with the rest of what I'd learned from him.
"What causes your accent to slip up?" Now it was my turn to be smug.
Noah smiled like a cat caught eating a canary. "That's personal. Why won't you take the damn job Holly?"
"It's personal."
I got up and walked out. I didn't let the door hit my big booty on the way out.
5 years later... Drinking wine with my sister via Zoom wasn't the same as having cocktails at a new bar every other week. If I moved back to NYC, I could be with my sister right now. My older sister, Katheryn or Kate as most people know her, had finally moved back to the North East after a stint in Seattle with husband number two. I was stuck paying taxes in an empty home, working remotely, friendless, and honestly, it was lonely. "Mom insists on family dinners on Sundays like we are The Soprano's. I swear she thinks she's from Italy not Ireland. And no boys allowed. What does she think, I'm 16?" She probably thinks that she doesn't wanting you ending up with another loser. But I didn't dare say
My contract was straightforward. They had incentive bonuses as well as annual ones and with all the company growth, I got stock options.Ricky was the first person I saw on Monday and I made sure he had his morning dose of sugar, via a Hostess cake I brought from home. Between HR and getting my badge saying I could enter the building, I had completely missed the morning meeting.Jennifer came down to bring me to my work station. She took the stairs by two even in heels. It was obvious we were rushing up to the office, but it wasn't even 9 AM yet. I thought mid-west companies would be more relaxed."We just finished the team morning meeting. And we were surprised with a visit from Adam who bought Starbucks for everyone. Can you believe it?! I'm sorry you missed it stuck in the bas
"Yogi, eh? Didn't take you for the yoga type." It was too early in the morning to deal with Adam.I'd already unrolled the yoga mat and started stretching when he unrolled his. I still needed a cup of coffee, barely able to speak words at this hour.Yoga was supposed to be quiet stretching and releasing stress, or at least that was my impression. The class was really hard. And Adam's whispers about how he's an avid yogi (which means person that practices yoga) made the class feel like it was never going to end."Did you see my hand stand? Because I sure didn't see yours." Adam took my mat from me to clean it up and put it away. I rolled my eyes as I mumbed out some sort of 'thank you'.He was really pushing it. I bit the inside
Adam had been a tad upset I didn't include him in the surprise I had for the board meeting. He left me to the sharks thinking I would need his help and instead he ended up looking like a chump, or chum for those same sharks he fed me to. When he waltzed into my office with coffee in hand all had been forgiven. "Today is the day!" Adam was so excited it looked like he had forgotten to get dressed that morning. "Today is also dry cleaner and laundry day. So I'll be staying in your office if you don't mind." He took my one chair and pulled it over to put his feet up on it while he took out his laptop. Weird-o. "Uhh sure thing boss. Thanks for asking." He looked up from his computer confused. "I didn't."
The next morning I felt like I'd cured my hangover via multiple orgasms last night. I should have a pounding headache but honestly I felt like singing Walking on Sunshine on my way to work.I didn't even care when I noticed Adam saved me a spot right next to him in yoga. Even an early morning yoga class couldn't get me down today. With only a few snags that were quickly fixed last night, it's been nothing but praise for my work on making his perverted app real.Nothing can bring me down.Besides gravity."Woah woah woah! You should be in child pose or downward dog, not attempting a hand stand!"Adam whisper yelled at me as he caught me. The class was sparse this morning.
Adam's POVNoah and I were finishing up lunch at a nearby cafe when I called 'dibs' on Holly. I knew he liked her too and there was no way I wasn't having my way with her first. I still thought about her 5 years after I met her! This woman needed to be in my bed so she could get out of my head."Dude I saw her first." Stating the obvious."Are you seriously acting like a child and calling 'dibs' on Holly?" His jaw almost dropped. Noah's disbelief was hilarious. Plus, he's wrong. Dibs is a real bro code."HELL YEAH! If I say shotgun, I get to ride in the front." Everyone knows that."We aren't twelve anymore." Ha. My brother is in denial. He still jokes about bodily functions, plays video games, and watches porn. Boys never grow up."Dibs." I said quickly before downing the last of my espresso."You are so annoying. More importantly, I don't care." Noah sat back, crossing his legs and asking for the c
8:39PM LimberJack have invited you to a private chat room.I hit accept immediately. This has been what I've been waiting for all day.LimberJack: hello gorgeousLonelyGirl: hey Mr. PossessiveI couldn't help myself. When he sent that message to PrinceCharming I felt a heat creep up my cheeks. He was claiming me? He can't do that. But maybe the app should have an option for couples and exclusive private chats. I typed out my notes that were from Horny4U and my experience with LimberJack. No one on the team needed to know that these were from my account. I'd say that they were suggestions that came in during testing.LimberJack: you want to dp?Lo
I had all of my notes from last night typed out in an email for me to discuss with Adam. If he saw anything viable I could pass it along to the legal team before pushing it to the backend team.Walking into the office I kept my head down, looking at my phone making the last few tweaks to my email, I am stopped by two men blocking my enterance to the elevator."Good morning, Holly." A familiar voice said."I got you coffee." My eyes slowly made their way up to my bosses who looked partically good this morning."We got you coffee." Noah scoffed."It was my idea." They are definitely brothers. They bicker like brothers do."Yeah but who paid?" Noah stuck the large hot Starbucks coffee out to me."Well, I thank the both of you for my morning caffeine fix. Thank you. Both of you." I nodded and took a sip. "Now, why don't we get to work. Some new things came up last night that I want to run by you guys before seeing if any of it is e
5 years later... Adam and I were celebrating 5 years of our success as a couple. Although Adam says we've been together over a decade because the day we met is when our souls recognized each other as the others half. He's such a romantic. I was also celebrating 5 years as a badass COO boss woman in a male dominated field. Wired magazine was going to be printing an article about women in technology and asked me to be on the cover! We had a lot to catch up on over these last few years that came and went in the blink of an eye! We were both happy that everyone we invited had come to the party. Even Noah, although he stayed close to his dad all night and wouldn't make eye contact with anyone. Noah had been in therapy and even started an 'alternate lifestyles' club in the area, embracing what he truly took pleasure in. Not everyone was a fan of it, Kate and my mom especially, but I was proud of Noah. I respect that he knows what he wants inside the boardroom and bedroom. That he's wil
Holly's POVI curled up in bed and was about to go back to sleep after buying my ticket home for Kate's wedding. A one-way ticket. And the incessent knocking at my front door was back."I SWEAR TO GOD MINDY! IF THAT'S YOU!" I growled and opened the door."Lucky for me, I'm not Mindy." Adam stood in the doorway with flowers, food, and looking tired and not as put together as he usually does. Big dark bags under his eyes. His shirt wasn't stylish or clean. I just started at him. "Can I come in?""Oh. Yeah. Uh. Sure." I opened my door and put my arm out inviting him inside."It's pretty clean in here.""Had a little help.""I heard. Mindy is a bit of a gossip. She's got a big mouth.""Matches her large breasts. Don't you think?" Why was he here, talking about Mindy, of all things. He caughed and set the food down. "I thought you wouldn't mind Chinese again. Is that alright?"I nodded.
Adam's POVI had no idea what I did to upset Holly. She knew she was it for me. Didn't she? Why wasn't she answering my phone calls or texts. I wanted to drive over to see her but Dan told me I couldn't do that without admitting fault. So legally I was stuck to stalking her social media.Holly hadn't updated her Instagram or FaceBook. She wasn't answering her phone. I didn't attempt to slide into her private messages on the app."Come in!" There was a knock at my door. I usually don't close my door but I've been dealing with so much since I had to let go of Noah. He's now at a "resort" for anger management. Or at least that what we are telling the press. Jennifer has stepped into Noah's role seemlessly though. The board is looking to appoint a new COO soon but I think she should stay on, not just as the interim person."Hey, Adam." I knew that voice. "Can I talk to you? For a moment?""Yeah, come on in Mindy. Have a sea
I got an Uber and went back to my house. Drank and watched Housewives. I drank like I was a housewife. I wasn't. I wouldn't be a wife anytime soon. So how could I be a house wife?I turned the TV off and checked my phone.92 MISSED CALLS99 NEW MESSAGES52 NEW VOICEMAILSI went in and deleted all of them. Didn't even look at them. They were all from the same three people and I didn't have time for people who treated me like crap.Noah reached out a few times but never left a message or text.Jennifer left multiple voicemails and texts but they were all in defense of Noah and Adam's behavior. She was a cheater herself. A liar. So I deleted the rest without a second glance at them.Adam had tried so many times, I finally got the courage to block him. Maybe I should block Jennifer too. And Noah.Just cut them all out of my life. For good. There was a missed call from Kate so I rang her back.
I watched in horror as Noah scrolled through the multiple personal messages that Adam had with other, I could only assume, female beta users."Jack? Using your middle name was a bit too easy to have the females in the company flock to you." Noah smirked. "And anyone that knows you, knows you love yoga and the great outdoors. LimberJack was a little too transparent, brother."It hadn't been to me. But I wasn't like many people in this company, male or female, that were hoping to catch the eye of a Talon brother. If I had been obsessed with him, I'd probably have known his middle name and put two and two together but I didn't. I wasn't that girl. I was lonely girl.Noah clicked on a chat with Mindy32 who was obviously the Mindy that had was so obsessed with him. I bet she's 32 years old or her birthday is March 2nd. Usually the numbers we choose mean something to us.Chats that came up to the weekend we had Chinese food and he slept over in my bed cam
I woke up with a horrible hangover. My alarm was going off and I realized it was only Tuesday. And I needed to get my butt moving or I was going to be late for work.***Adam was sitting at my desk with his feet up. "How is my little drunky drunk?" He laughed and got up to hug me. "Still wearing your sunglasses, I see. I take it you don't remember talking to me last night?""Nope." I slid my sunglasses off and accepted a hug from Adam. He was warm and cuddly. I could have had these arms around me last night, but instead I woke up in my bed. Alone. With a headache and a very foggy recollection from last night. "What did we talk about?""Oh, nothing. Just how many children we are going to have. When you are moving in. I'm taking your name instead of keeping Talon, which makes perfect sense for the company.""Please tell me you are lying." I could feel my face turn pale."Holly. Come on now. We talked about when we were going to do it. And I sa
I sat in my office reviewing the two job opportunities. Even though one was a demotion, my salary didn't change. Could I work with Dev after this morning? Could I work for Noah after every thing we've been through? I texted Jennifer: Hey, want to go out for drinks? Bring Jill! She texted me back immediately: Jill says we are in. WOOT! WOOT! Is Adam coming? I texted her: No. This would be a girls only happy hour. She texted me back where and when to meet. The usual spot at 6PM. Good, now I had someone to discuss this whole thing with and wouldn't feel so alone. I don't feel like I can discuss this with Adam honestly. And it wouldn't be nice to put him in the middle of this decision. There was a knock at the door. Looking up, it was Noah. "Holly." He nodded. "Can we talk?" I shifted uncomfortably in my chair. "Of course. Come on in." He shut the door behind him, which made my skin p
To my surprise, Talon Tech wasn't a far drive from the resort Adam had built for us. I was awake and ready to take on the world of corporate America again. Had it only been two weeks since I was last here? Adam dropped me off at my office and reminded me of our IT operations team meeting in a few minutes. This was basically the team giving me a 'quick glimpse' into what has changed, what needs to change, and any issues we can stop before they become issues. I felt like I was being coddled. And in a way I was, but a lot can happen in two weeks. That's three whole weekends without work. Optics are not looking good right now for me. I walked into the conference room and the room of twenty plus people went silent. I hated having all eyes on me and now all eyes were on me and they were obviously just talking about me. "Good morning, everyone! I am so happy to be back from all that craziness and back to this craziness." I paused, no one laughed.&n
Adam lifted me up a bit and scooted me further onto the bed. The bed creaked a bit and the sheets smelled like they were brand new.I didn't want to slow down but Adam pulled away making me feel cold without his lips on mine."You miss me that much already, do you? I'm just taking off my shirt, Holly." He winked at me, "I think you should too."Red, hot, excited blush crawled up my neck and face. Damn Irish roots, I'm always blotchy and red. I took the hem of my shirt and pulled it over my head. Adam tugged my shirt off and threw it somewhere."This bra is next. Why did you wear such dull clothing today?"I bit his shoulder as he said that, trying to unhook my bra."Because I didn't want to taunt your brother. You know, my ex fiance?""Oh shit." He sat up looking down at me. "I'm going to hate myself for this.""For what?" Adam was starting to scare me."For telling you that Noah is, or was, here.
