"Want some coffee and cookies?"

I glance at Nate and nod slightly. He disappears to the kitchen and comes back with two cups of coffee and a plate of cookies. He tosses himself on the couch, a few feet away from me.

"That's Damien's ex." I sigh, reaching for the cup. "She wants him to be the best man at her wedding. Can you imagine?"

"If your husband has completely moved on, that shouldn't be a problem."

That's the problem. My husband hasn't moved on. But Nate doesn't need to know that. He knows more than enough about my life. I still feel like I know nothing about his life.

Silence stretches between us, the only noise being the chewing of crunchy cookies.

We are actively avoiding talking about yesterday. He's drinking his coffee quietly, avoiding my eyes. I'm silently sipping the coffee, scared to start the conversation. Why is there so much tension between us today?
