Knox's Pov

A knock echoed through the study, and I shot my gaze to the door. “Come in.”

The door creaked open and the clan's physician, Galen walked into the room. He bowed his head the second the door closed behind him, “Alpha Knox.”

“Come. Take a seat,” I ushered, getting to my feet to pour us some wine. I handed him a glass, and took my seat across from him, helping myself to some wine.

“So? How is my nephew?” I asked, dropping the glass on the table.

“Well,” Galen dropped his glass on the table as well, “Prince Aegon's symptoms are becoming more and more severe. I've given him some herbs to control the symptoms, and make the pain subside but…” he trailed off, “There's only so much pain it can ease. You know that well.”

I nodded, “I know, and that's precisely why he needs this marriage alliance.”

“So it's true. You plan to have him wed to the princess of Moonclaw pack.”

“Indeed, I do,” I got to my feet, and walked to the window, looking out, “It is the only solution. It will give him the ease you cannot provide, and I will feel more relaxed knowing he isn't in any kind of pain.”

I twisted the ring on my finger. “I cannot bear to see him hurting.”

“I understand that but the Moonclaw pack. Aren't they our enemies? Can you trust them enough to let the prince marry their daughter?”

I spun around, “It’s not about trust, Galen.”

“It's about what?”

“Availability,” I replied swiftly.

“Aegon needs a wife to ease his suffering, and he needs it now. I don't wanna waste any more time delaying it. The Moonclaw pack, enemies or not. They aren't exactly in any position to turn down an alliance with our pack.”

I returned to my seat, taking a sip from my glass, “Can I trust them?” I cocked my head a little, narrowing my gaze, “They would be utterly foolish to try anything funny with us, don't you think?”

He nodded, “True. I guess that's sorted then.”

I took another swig from my glass, and dropped the glass on the table.

“Well, I should get going now. I have other patients to attend to,” Galen said, rising to his feet.

“Thank you, Galen, for taking care of my nephew,” I stood up too, “It was great to see you, and I do hope you show up for the wedding tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” Galen cocked an eyebrow, sounding quite shocked.

“As I said, there's a need for haste. I do not want Aegon to suffer for even an hour longer.”

“Very well then. I'll be at the wedding,” he pulled out a small bottle, and placed it on the table, “I figure you'd have almost run out of your dosage by now.”

I grinned, grabbing the bottle from the table, and dropping it in a locker, “Thank you. I'll see you out,” I escorted him out, and then went to Aegon's chambers.

“Alpha Knox,” the guards outside his room bowed, opening way to the door. I knocked on the door, and pushed it open, stepping inside.

“I was wondering when you were gonna come,” Aegon's voice boomed through the room instantly as he sat up in bed, and his entire face lit up at the sight of me.

“Hey,” I grinned as I moved across the room to his bed, “How do you feel?”

“Heavy, drowsy. You know the rest,” he brushed his hair away from his face, tucking it behind his ear. His face was paler, and he looked even more weary than he did just yesterday.

“You look horrible,” I commented, and he laughed hard.

“Your honesty is sharp, Uncle. Well, don't blame me. Not everyone can wear the curse so effortlessly like you do,” he teased but it was more than a joke.

Our family, one of the most feared and powerful Lycans in history, had a dark legacy. We were the strongest warriors and protectors of the clan but beneath all of that was a deadly curse inherited from birth.

A vengeful witch had placed it upon our lineage, condemning us to a fate worse than death. As we aged, our wolves grew stronger, but also more uncontrollable, until eventually, we succumbed to madness and a horrific demise.

This curse had claimed every member of our family, until finally, we were given a way to manage it. The way was pretty simple, we were to  find a mate, and regularly consume their blood to sustain our lives. And once the mate delivers a child the curse is passed to the next generation.

And pain and suffering is passed on from father to son. A repulsive gift. If you asked me I detested this way of life which is why I swore to never find my mate, and let my children suffer such fate. But Aegon.

Aegon had inherited my brother's curse, and now he was at the age where he was beginning to show signs of it manifesting. Watching him writhe in pain, and knowing that things were only going to get worse for him. I couldn't sit back and ignore it, hence the marriage alliance.

This marriage with the MoonClaw pack was his chance for a normal life which is all I wanted to give him. A life without pain.

I smirked, “Is that so?”

“Yeah,” he bobbed his head, and smiled, reaching for the glass on his table but there was no water in it.

“Here. I'll help,” I took the glass from him, moved across the room, and filled his cup, “You know you don't have to worry about the curse anymore,” I returned with his cup, extending it to him, “You're going to get married tomorrow. Once you drink—”

“I know,” he brought the cup to his lips, drank, and dropped it on the table, looking at me, “I kind of pity my bride to be you know. The role she is to play here, it's not an easy feat.”

I watched him carefully, “It's not,” I muttered, sharing his thoughts. I wouldn't wish such a fate on anyone but to save Aegon I didn't have much of a choice.

A knock echoed at the door, followed by the creaking sound, and Rowan, my gamma walked in. He bowed, and made his way to us, “The ride is ready. We need to head over to their pack to retrieve the girl.”

I nodded, “Alright,” I glanced at Aegon, “I have to leave but I'll come see you when I come back,” I patted his arm, and started for the door.

“Uncle?” Aegon called, and I stopped, turning to him, “I hope she's pretty.”

I scoffed, “Get some sleep. We don't want you looking like a ghost tomorrow,” I said, and we left, setting for the Moonclaw pack.

“What do you know about the princess of Moonclaw?” I asked Rowan on our way to the pack, “Her name is Eleanor.”

“Is she pretty?” I glanced at him, and Rowan smiled.

“From what I've heard she's fairly pretty, Knox.”

“That will have to work.”

We arrived at the Moonclaw pack late in the evening, and one of the guards led Rowan and I  inside.

“Alpha Knox,” the Alpha King of Moonclaw pack, called the second I walked in, flashing me a gentle smile that seemed almost disfigured.

He wasn't alone there. His sons were there with a girl which I assumed was the one. The entire living room was as quiet as a graveyard when we walked in and I couldn't help the feeling like I just walked in on something.

“Alpha Arden,” I responded as I approached him, “I believe you know why I'm here,” I said.

“You're here for my daughter.”

“Indeed, I am,” I glanced at the girl, “You must be the daughter. Eleanor, right?”

Her eyes fluttered, and her cheeks turned bright red,  “Yes—”

“But she's not the one you're here for,” Alpha Arden cut her off, and I jerked my head to him.

“What are you talking about? I thought you had just one daughter.”

“I do but it's not Eleanor. She's our foster daughter. I lost my biological daughter a few years ago but luckily we found her again. She's the real princess—There they come,” he gestured to the stairs, and my gaze followed.

KNOX My heart stopped as my gaze fell on her, descending the stairs and everything around me seemed to disappear until all I could see was her—all I could breathe. She didn't even look at me. I didn't think she wanted to. If anything I thought she looked bitter. Bitter and yet beautiful. The way my Wolf reacted to the presence of an ordinary, small woman, was uncalled for. I could hardly compose myself as I stood there, staring at her. I shut and opened my eyes. What was happening? “Mate—” from the inner part of me, the manly voice of my wolf muttered. I had never heard it sound this way. It was supposed to be a stubborn creature, domineering the other wolves whenever there was combat. Not this way. It sounded weak—like it had been conquered by something. Someone. Someone in the room. Someone who just walked into the room. Mate? Mate?! Did I hear mate? How was this even possible? Looking away, I looked around the room. The Alpha, his wife

Wrapping my hand around an answer was also an impossible thing to do, and for once, it dawned on me that the people I called ‘family’ hated me so much. How dare they?!Rage was an understatement of how I felt at this very moment. And for all that I knew, there was only one thing stopping me from running away from this pack and heading back to the Moonclaw Pack to carry out a well-deserved revenge on them. Especially Eleanor. The knock on the door made me flinch.“No—” mouthing, I realized it was time to meet the ugly Lycan Prince, my husband to be. “No—” Once more, the word ran out of my mouth and I jumped to my feet. “Are you in there, my lady?” Unlocking the door, I walked back to the bed and took my seat. “You're disturbing my sleep.” “The door to your room shouldn't be locked, Lady Sage. We have to get you ready to meet the prince,” One of them said with a bow. The ugly prince, I thought dreadfully.“Good morning, Lady Sage. I'll be the one to bathe you this morning," the other maid said, stepping forward. “What? I can bathe myself the last time I checked.” “The Alpha has given his order,” she explained, shutting the door behind her while both of them walked closer. “Let's get to it already, Lady Sage.” Before the end of the next hour, I was seated on the dressing chair with a towel wrapped around my body. I didn't want to do this. I wasn't ready to. Not to an ugly man.

What do you want?” I raised a question, moping at the rest of my family members who were seated at the table. “We can’t talk about it here,” she said.“What's wrong with here?” I arched a brow, looking around me.“Come on, Sage,” Alistair muttered, looking in my direction. “Give our sister a few minutes of your time before the exchange of vows, at least. SAGEThere was nothing new or a different feeling. Even though we shared the same night in the same room and on one bed. I turned to face the other side of the bed this morning, heaving a sigh of relief. Relief that I wasn't embarrassed at the end of the day. Unexpectedly, my mind drifted back to Eleanor. How she had wished for me to be disgraced and how it ended up being her. The thought of it alone brought a smile to my face, and I sat up on the bed, almost laughing at myself and alone. How was she? Crying? Hateful? Who could she even blame for her being unfortunate? Maybe if she had stayed back and let Knox take her, she would end up seeing that Aegon was a handsome man. But why were there rumors that he was ugly? I was still in my thoughts when a hand touched me. I flinched, looking at the other side of the bed where my husband lay. ELEANOR “No. No.” The words ran out of my mouth as I shook my head in disagreement even when I knew there was nothing I could do about it. “No.” Again, I stared at the piece of paper - reading the lines I did not even understand in order to check and see if there was something I understood in it. I could not be pregnant, could I? How could I not be pregnant? The Prince and I have had sex a couple of times and there was no way he did not cum in me and maybe that was because he didn't know I wasn't pregnant. After all, if the man knew about my schemes, he would not have done what he did. After pacing the chamber for a while, I caught up with the bed and was seated in it the very next moment - my head filled with so many thoughts - including how this had become a good thing for us. Wasn't it? At least, I had become pregnant, normally - like every other pregnant woman who had real hormones. This was going to happen to me as well, even though I didn't want it but in another way, I

Not until I heard from the doctor - the more reason I was leading my way to the hospital at this time of the day. “Good morning, lady Eleanor—” someone greeted, causing me to stop in my tracks automatically. “Good morning to you, too—” I mouthed. I had a question to ask, but on second thought, I changed my mind about it and resumed my movement. “You should have a good day at the end of today.” In no time, I caught up with the gate of the pack. Looking around, I caught sight of the Alpha and Aegon who moped at me with suspicious looks on their faces. Maybe - just maybe they thought I was about to leave for a moment of my own just as I termed it the other day. I didn't have to explain to them but I walked in their direction. “Good morning, Alpha Knox.” I greeted the older man with a bow and faced Aegon who faked a smile. Maybe it wasn't fake either. “Good morn

ELEANOR The next morning, I paced the space of my chamber with a confused look on my countenance - many thoughts running around in my head but one more than the other. How the hell didn't I realize this was a hard task? Maybe. Just maybe that was why Aella could not do a good job in the first instance. Who knew? A sigh ran out of my mouth and I stopped pacing. What do I do? It was very early in the morning. Not many wolves had woken up but there was me who did - especially because I needed to think about how to add this potion to the meal of my sister who sure was asleep. “Oh, no—” a loud cry ran out of my mouth again. What do I do?There was nothing I knew I could do except put in the potion just as the old Witch instructed. ELEANOR It was four days after the meeting with the Witch. As expected and after a long wait, the maid assigned to me came over to announce how ready the old man was. “He's asked for you to be in his chamber.” I was ready - more than ready so there was no need to take a bath since I had taken one about an hour ago. “I'm ready to meet with him. Shall we leave?” Not saying a word, the young woman walked before me while I took my place behind her. Together, we walked and as expected, she stopped at the door of the chamber. “You can go in.” She announced before walking away. Not knocking, I pushed the door open and walked into the chamber - catching sight of the old man. “Good day, old man—” I caught up with the center of the room. “I have come just as you have asked. It was good news - more than good news because the last time I was here, it took me more than a day to see the man. “You must be ready in the next hour.” The maid who came to make the announcement sounded. “I shall return so that you can be taken to the chamber of my master.” Nodding, I got out of bed and reached the bathroom where I washed up, getting more than ready the next time I showed up in the chamber. Where was this maid? Didn't she say she would be here in the next hour? Or was it not an hour yet? Left with no choice, I relaxed on the bed while waiting for the maid to once again show up. A hand knocked on the door, announcing the presence of the maid who had come to take me with her. I let her in with a snap of my fingers. “I'm ready. ELEANOR Why the hell was she alive and not yet dead?! Another two months had passed and there was no way she was dead. At least, not yet. What was she doing alive? This morning, I woke up with a worried look on my countenance. There was a lot went through my mind as I tried to balance this - especially why my sister—step-sister did not die and was very much still alive. There was no way I could make it make sense because it didn't make any sense to me also. Sage should be dead at this point but she wasn't—at least, not yet. Not yet? If she hadn't died for over two months, when would she finally be dead? I jumped off the bed and looked to my left to meet Aegon who was very much awake - a smile on his countenance. He wasn't smiling at me. He fixed his gaze on the ceiling and looked at me when he felt my gaze on his face. “Good morning—” the smile disappeared from his face and he jumped on his feet. “I should go hunting with the other men.” In a short while, the door opened and

KNOXThere was no way I would not miss her. All the time, whenever I set eyes on the bed where I lay all night, all I could think about was Sage and the sweet moment we shared on this same bed. What more could I ask for? A knowing smile came on my countenance this evening while I stared at the bed again, as usual. It had somehow become a daily sacrifice for me - the kind of sacrifice I could never overlook and over again, I looked forward to carrying out this sacrifice another time. A hand on the door cut short my thoughts. I let my gaze disappear from the bed, catching up with the door and pulling it so that it could be open. “Yes, Brian. What do you want from me this time around?” Opening the door wider, I watched him walk into the chamber. Without wasting time, I caught up with the bed but did not allow my thoughts to move in that direction. Waking up this morning, I felt very much better than a few days ago when a fever started. What did I do to deserve that? I sat up, relieved from not throwing up like the other nights—and then led my way to the mirror in a corner of the chamber so that I could check myself out. Oh, yes. As usual, I looked good. Once. Twice. Thrice, I shook my head to see if it still hurt. But then, I walked back to the bed to take a seat when I realized how better I had become. All the thanks to Aella. Where was she? ELEANOR The morning came and I was unsettled. There were so many thoughts running around in my head as soon as I opened my eyes on the large bed this morning. What did she go to do? Sage. What did Sage go to do in that area at that time of the morning? I sat up on the bed and looked around for Aegon, not also surprised that he was not somewhere on the bed or even the room, especially when this was something he always did. Aegon should be the least of my concerns. There was something I needed to do than think about why Aegon was not in the chamber with me or on the bed. I got up on my feet and walked to the window so that I could take a look, after which I let go before returning to the bed. Returning to my thoughts. I had seen Sage pass through the hallway in the early hours of the morning when I took a stroll. Sleeping was quite hard for me and in order to not feel worse than I feel, I made up my mind to take a stroll and think of possible ways to feel better. There were
