Knox's Pov
A knock echoed through the study, and I shot my gaze to the door. “Come in.”
The door creaked open and the clan's physician, Galen walked into the room. He bowed his head the second the door closed behind him, “Alpha Knox.”
“Come. Take a seat,” I ushered, getting to my feet to pour us some wine. I handed him a glass, and took my seat across from him, helping myself to some wine.
“So? How is my nephew?” I asked, dropping the glass on the table.
“Well,” Galen dropped his glass on the table as well, “Prince Aegon's symptoms are becoming more and more severe. I've given him some herbs to control the symptoms, and make the pain subside but…” he trailed off, “There's only so much pain it can ease. You know that well.”
I nodded, “I know, and that's precisely why he needs this marriage alliance.”
“So it's true. You plan to have him wed to the princess of Moonclaw pack.”
“Indeed, I do,” I got to my feet, and walked to the window, looking out, “It is the only solution. It will give him the ease you cannot provide, and I will feel more relaxed knowing he isn't in any kind of pain.”
I twisted the ring on my finger. “I cannot bear to see him hurting.”
“I understand that but the Moonclaw pack. Aren't they our enemies? Can you trust them enough to let the prince marry their daughter?”
I spun around, “It’s not about trust, Galen.”
“It's about what?”
“Availability,” I replied swiftly.
“Aegon needs a wife to ease his suffering, and he needs it now. I don't wanna waste any more time delaying it. The Moonclaw pack, enemies or not. They aren't exactly in any position to turn down an alliance with our pack.”
I returned to my seat, taking a sip from my glass, “Can I trust them?” I cocked my head a little, narrowing my gaze, “They would be utterly foolish to try anything funny with us, don't you think?”
He nodded, “True. I guess that's sorted then.”
I took another swig from my glass, and dropped the glass on the table.
“Well, I should get going now. I have other patients to attend to,” Galen said, rising to his feet.
“Thank you, Galen, for taking care of my nephew,” I stood up too, “It was great to see you, and I do hope you show up for the wedding tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” Galen cocked an eyebrow, sounding quite shocked.
“As I said, there's a need for haste. I do not want Aegon to suffer for even an hour longer.”
“Very well then. I'll be at the wedding,” he pulled out a small bottle, and placed it on the table, “I figure you'd have almost run out of your dosage by now.”
I grinned, grabbing the bottle from the table, and dropping it in a locker, “Thank you. I'll see you out,” I escorted him out, and then went to Aegon's chambers.
“Alpha Knox,” the guards outside his room bowed, opening way to the door. I knocked on the door, and pushed it open, stepping inside.
“I was wondering when you were gonna come,” Aegon's voice boomed through the room instantly as he sat up in bed, and his entire face lit up at the sight of me.
“Hey,” I grinned as I moved across the room to his bed, “How do you feel?”
“Heavy, drowsy. You know the rest,” he brushed his hair away from his face, tucking it behind his ear. His face was paler, and he looked even more weary than he did just yesterday.
“You look horrible,” I commented, and he laughed hard.
“Your honesty is sharp, Uncle. Well, don't blame me. Not everyone can wear the curse so effortlessly like you do,” he teased but it was more than a joke.
Our family, one of the most feared and powerful Lycans in history, had a dark legacy. We were the strongest warriors and protectors of the clan but beneath all of that was a deadly curse inherited from birth.
A vengeful witch had placed it upon our lineage, condemning us to a fate worse than death. As we aged, our wolves grew stronger, but also more uncontrollable, until eventually, we succumbed to madness and a horrific demise.
This curse had claimed every member of our family, until finally, we were given a way to manage it. The way was pretty simple, we were to find a mate, and regularly consume their blood to sustain our lives. And once the mate delivers a child the curse is passed to the next generation.
And pain and suffering is passed on from father to son. A repulsive gift. If you asked me I detested this way of life which is why I swore to never find my mate, and let my children suffer such fate. But Aegon.
Aegon had inherited my brother's curse, and now he was at the age where he was beginning to show signs of it manifesting. Watching him writhe in pain, and knowing that things were only going to get worse for him. I couldn't sit back and ignore it, hence the marriage alliance.
This marriage with the MoonClaw pack was his chance for a normal life which is all I wanted to give him. A life without pain.
I smirked, “Is that so?”
“Yeah,” he bobbed his head, and smiled, reaching for the glass on his table but there was no water in it.
“Here. I'll help,” I took the glass from him, moved across the room, and filled his cup, “You know you don't have to worry about the curse anymore,” I returned with his cup, extending it to him, “You're going to get married tomorrow. Once you drink—”
“I know,” he brought the cup to his lips, drank, and dropped it on the table, looking at me, “I kind of pity my bride to be you know. The role she is to play here, it's not an easy feat.”
I watched him carefully, “It's not,” I muttered, sharing his thoughts. I wouldn't wish such a fate on anyone but to save Aegon I didn't have much of a choice.
A knock echoed at the door, followed by the creaking sound, and Rowan, my gamma walked in. He bowed, and made his way to us, “The ride is ready. We need to head over to their pack to retrieve the girl.”
I nodded, “Alright,” I glanced at Aegon, “I have to leave but I'll come see you when I come back,” I patted his arm, and started for the door.
“Uncle?” Aegon called, and I stopped, turning to him, “I hope she's pretty.”
I scoffed, “Get some sleep. We don't want you looking like a ghost tomorrow,” I said, and we left, setting for the Moonclaw pack.
“What do you know about the princess of Moonclaw?” I asked Rowan on our way to the pack, “Her name is Eleanor.”
“Is she pretty?” I glanced at him, and Rowan smiled.
“From what I've heard she's fairly pretty, Knox.”
“That will have to work.”
We arrived at the Moonclaw pack late in the evening, and one of the guards led Rowan and I inside.
“Alpha Knox,” the Alpha King of Moonclaw pack, called the second I walked in, flashing me a gentle smile that seemed almost disfigured.
He wasn't alone there. His sons were there with a girl which I assumed was the one. The entire living room was as quiet as a graveyard when we walked in and I couldn't help the feeling like I just walked in on something.
“Alpha Arden,” I responded as I approached him, “I believe you know why I'm here,” I said.
“You're here for my daughter.”
“Indeed, I am,” I glanced at the girl, “You must be the daughter. Eleanor, right?”
Her eyes fluttered, and her cheeks turned bright red, “Yes—”
“But she's not the one you're here for,” Alpha Arden cut her off, and I jerked my head to him.
“What are you talking about? I thought you had just one daughter.”
“I do but it's not Eleanor. She's our foster daughter. I lost my biological daughter a few years ago but luckily we found her again. She's the real princess—There they come,” he gestured to the stairs, and my gaze followed.
KNOX My heart stopped as my gaze fell on her, descending the stairs and everything around me seemed to disappear until all I could see was her—all I could breathe. She didn't even look at me. I didn't think she wanted to. If anything I thought she looked bitter. Bitter and yet beautiful. The way my Wolf reacted to the presence of an ordinary, small woman, was uncalled for. I could hardly compose myself as I stood there, staring at her. I shut and opened my eyes. What was happening? “Mate—” from the inner part of me, the manly voice of my wolf muttered. I had never heard it sound this way. It was supposed to be a stubborn creature, domineering the other wolves whenever there was combat. Not this way. It sounded weak—like it had been conquered by something. Someone. Someone in the room. Someone who just walked into the room. Mate? Mate?! Did I hear mate? How was this even possible? Looking away, I looked around the room. The Alpha, his wife
SAGEHow could they do a thing like that to me?!Who on the face of the earth—will consciously reject their child like they all of a sudden no longer matter? As I paced the room I was brought into the moment we reached the pack, these and many more thoughts were running around in my head. Wrapping my hand around an answer was also an impossible thing to do, and for once, it dawned on me that the people I called ‘family’ hated me so much. How dare they?!Rage was an understatement of how I felt at this very moment. And for all that I knew, there was only one thing stopping me from running away from this pack and heading back to the Moonclaw Pack to carry out a well-deserved revenge on them. Especially Eleanor. That bitch. I would rip her heart out of her chest if I could. Why wouldn't I? She had finally become a thorn in my flesh and only one thing stopped me from dealing with her. It was the unavailability of my wolf. Something had happened to Silver. Something I had yet to dec
SAGEWhy did I wake? The knock on the door made me flinch.“No—” mouthing, I realized it was time to meet the ugly Lycan Prince, my husband to be. “No—” Once more, the word ran out of my mouth and I jumped to my feet. “Are you in there, my lady?” Unlocking the door, I walked back to the bed and took my seat. “You're disturbing my sleep.” “The door to your room shouldn't be locked, Lady Sage. We have to get you ready to meet the prince,” One of them said with a bow. The ugly prince, I thought dreadfully.“Good morning, Lady Sage. I'll be the one to bathe you this morning," the other maid said, stepping forward. “What? I can bathe myself the last time I checked.” “The Alpha has given his order,” she explained, shutting the door behind her while both of them walked closer. “Let's get to it already, Lady Sage.” Before the end of the next hour, I was seated on the dressing chair with a towel wrapped around my body. I didn't want to do this. I wasn't ready to. Not to an ugly man.
SAGEI gazed at Eleanor, perplexed, as I rose from my seat and met her gaze. She had a smile on her face which was totally odd considering the hostility she had always directed towards me. Seeing her smile at me now left me feeling even more baffled. What did she want now?“How can I help you, Eleanor? What do you want?” I raised a question, moping at the rest of my family members who were seated at the table. “We can’t talk about it here,” she said.“What's wrong with here?” I arched a brow, looking around me.“Come on, Sage,” Alistair muttered, looking in my direction. “Give our sister a few minutes of your time before the exchange of vows, at least. Who knows? She might have a wedding present to give you before the exchange of vows. You'll never know until you know.” That bastard. Our sister? Since when?At this point, I was starting to believe that he wasn't even really my brother. Neither were they family. Family didn't treat people like this. I was better off with strangers t
KNOXThat was it. I watched my nephew—the man I adored most in the world, take the woman I just realized was my mate, as his wife. It was sorta Ironic, wasn't it?Sage was now his wife—HISSomething about that didn't make me feel good even one bit. No matter how much I had held it together then, it hadn't been easy, watching them together. But what could I do? There was nothing to be done. Aegon needed a wife, and there, he got one. I heaved another long sigh. After all, this was my idea from the beginning and I did this because of my love for Aegon. How could I refuse at the dying minute? How could I even have felt the urge to? “The newlyweds may now take the dance floor.” Aegon, with all pleasure. I could see it in his eyes as he took his wife by the hand while she got on her feet. And together, they started dancing—smiles on their faces. A smile appeared on my face as well. Inasmuch as I felt bad about thisStarting from knowing she was my mate, down to punishing her by
SAGEThere was nothing new or a different feeling. Even though we shared the same night in the same room and on one bed. I turned to face the other side of the bed this morning, heaving a sigh of relief. Relief that I wasn't embarrassed at the end of the day. Unexpectedly, my mind drifted back to Eleanor. How she had wished for me to be disgraced and how it ended up being her. The thought of it alone brought a smile to my face, and I sat up on the bed, almost laughing at myself and alone. How was she? Crying? Hateful? Who could she even blame for her being unfortunate? Maybe if she had stayed back and let Knox take her, she would end up seeing that Aegon was a handsome man. But why were there rumors that he was ugly? I was still in my thoughts when a hand touched me. I flinched, looking at the other side of the bed where my husband lay. The sound of that was good in my ears, and I put on a smile especially for him. “Good morning. Did you have a good night's rest?” “How c
KNOX“Hello, Wolves,” I stopped in my tracks, organizing myself and walking again. “It is a pleasure to be in the midst of you all again on a morning like this.”“Long Live The Alpha,” they all got on their feet, bowing while I caught up with the last vacant seat. A seat that happened to be facing the woman I didn't want to see. But how could I have avoided this meeting? There was no way I could. Smiling, I looked around the table. “Where is your husband, Sage? Why isn't he here yet?” “Good morning, my Lord,” now was her turn to greet me. “It was said that the Prince left for the doctor's tent when I asked after him from the maid who brought me here.” What? No way. How could the maid have done that?! How many times was I supposed to explain to these people that our curse was meant to be a secret?Looking around the table, a deep sigh ran out of my mouth. “Why did he go to see the doctor? Did he say a word about it to you?” She shook her head, obviously confused. “I wasn't tol
KNOXBefore the end of the next hour, myself and the men were still seated in the dining hall. “Gentlemen,” I started. “There'll be no need for us to proceed to the meeting hall when we can just meet here. Don't you think the same?” No one talked and I continued. “Thank you. For honoring this meeting. It's a good thing to meet with you people once more. However, before we go ahead with what we want to do on this day, I need to speak with you all and it has to do with the curse.” A confused look greased the countenance of some of them, while some simply nodded. “The curse lingers amongst us in this pack, and no one outside this pack knows about it. Not even the family of Sage, the new wife in this Pack.” They nodded. I did the same, adjusting a little on the chair. “We must know that on no condition should this be mentioned when she is present,” I let out. “It's enough that we have to put her through all of these, and I also believe it's best if we don't speak about it.”“She'll
SAGEMoonclaw Pack? Did I hear the man correctly? “Moonclaw Pack?” I walked towards the door and out of the room. The next time I turned around, Alpha Knox walked behind me. There was a look on his countenance and it looked like anger more than the normal him. Together, we caught up with the entrance of the living room and walked out with anger on my countenance. I knew already that it was the people I once lived with, but what did they want from me? “Good day, Luna of The Darkfangs Pack.” Did that—was that greeting for me? I looked around in shock, not believing my eyes and ears. What did I just hear? I looked at my brothers who had smiles on their faces, wondering also what was funny and why they smiled. “Good day to you—” I let out after some time. “Good day, Alpha Knox.” My husband walked forward. There was a smile on his countenance but I could tell that it was fake. How could it not be? “What can I do for you today, my in-laws?” The old Alpha walked closer. He bowe
SAGEDays after Aegon was buried, the coronation ceremony came to life and everyone in the Pack ran around. With a smile on my countenance, I looked in the mirror at how good I looked—nodding in satisfaction with my heart that looked forward to the ceremony. Everywhere in the compound looked set. I was ready. I could feel it inside of me. What more could I ask for? The smile faded when thoughts of Aegon came running in my head but I pushed it away the next moment, smiling once again with my heart that looked forward to the ceremony. “You're beautiful in your outfit, my lady.” “Thank you.” I turned to look at the maid who did a good job of getting me ready. “Can we leave already?” “Yes—” the maid mouthed. She got off the bed and took hold of my garment from behind. Something Aella should be doing but I struggled so hard to not think about a woman who had done nothing but betray me. She did what she had to do, after all. The Alpha will need to be spoken to as soon as the ceremo
KNOXSage nodded. “I'm ready, Knox.”Taking back her hand in mine, I led her out of the chamber. Through the hallway, we went—with Brian who walked behind me all this while. My guard who never would let me down. It didn't take long to get down the stairs. So many thoughts ran around in my head but I let it be because, at the end of the day, everything would play right. Either right or wrong. “Gather the wolves, Brian. You may leave now. I'm sure the angry wolves cannot do anything to me and the woman. But if they choose to be violent, then we shall have it.” There was no need to play nice any longer. Not when I could turn into a wolf and deal with them. Catching up with the compound of the main pack, I felt something—someone squeeze my hand. “Easy, my lady—” I looked at the woman. “I'm sorry, my lord. Forgive my actions.” Sage looked up at me and then at the wolves who looked so much in her direction while they gathered in front of me. “Where are all the wolves?” More wolves
SAGE I shouldn't have returned to the pack with Knox, but I didn't have a choice because, at that point, the man was not going to let me be on my own, and talk more about finding my way. “You're going back to The pack with me and nothing is going to change that—” In a commanding tone I could not refuse, Knox picked up Aegon's lifeless body on the floor. This was a moment I had refused to believe was real but I didn't have a choice because it played right in front of me. Another reason I could not refuse to go back to the pack with Knox. I didn't want to die, even though it seemed otherwise all these while. A sigh ran out of my mouth and my mouth opened in more tears—while I walked behind Knox who was ahead of me with the lifeless body. How much longer before we arrived at the pack? I was tired. Tired of everything, especially walking such a distance with so many bags to carry along even though it was just one and there was Knox who took everything up in his arms. When does it get
KNOXHow could I explain this to him? “Did you say a woman I have been married to since all these while is your mate, Uncle?” I nodded, ashamed but what choice did I have? “She's your mate. You've known from the onset.” I looked at Sage who had it clear on her face that she was scared. But I shifted closer to her so that she could feel nothing but safety while Aegon remained in his feelings. “Aegon—” I then called. “You need to calm down and listen to me. I didn't mean to hurt you.” “I didn't say you did—” he chuckled, standing on his feet. “I'll need some time to take in this news so you must give me some—” he walked away and was out of our sight. The next time we set eyes on Aegon, it was moments later when he walked back into the scene so that he could take his flask and with this, the man was gone from our sight again. “He hates us—” Sage cried. “I can see it.” “You don't know what you're talking about—” I cried. “He's my nephew and a good man at that. Aegon cannot bring hi
SAGEI didn't know what to feel like. Especially seeing Aegon who I should be avoiding. There was shock on the countenance of Knox who didn't expect Aegon of all the people in the Pack to say that. But what choice did the Alpha have? “I'll go with you if Knox doesn't.” “I didn't say I wouldn't go—” Knox mouthed. He looked away from me and met the gaze of Aegon who watched with thoughts that surely were running around his head. “Aegon, you don't have to do this. The members might come for you if they find out it's you who helped us.” “I got tired of living a long time ago—” Aegon looked at me and then his uncle. “We'll leave in a short while. For now, I need to get a few things ready because it might be a long journey and you don't want to know how long.”The sound of ‘long’ scared me more than anything. What was the man talking about? “I don't care how long it is—” I interrupted everyone's thoughts. “Myself and Knox will be here.” He nodded, faced the door, and came out of my
KNOXI relaxed on the bed, my eyes shut as I rested from everything that happened the day before. Suddenly, a hand hit me from behind. Or even in front of me. “Open your eyes, Knox. Can't you see?!” At the top of her voice, a woman shouted like never before. Forced to open my eyes, I looked around the space as I tried so hard to read the room so that I could understand what was happening. That was when the voices of wolves—angry wolves filled my ears. “Give Her To Us!” “Can you hear that?” An already crying Sage mouthed. Letting go of me, the woman reached the end of the room before turning back around to look at me—her eyes teary. “I don't know what I'm supposed to do—can't you see they want me given to them?” I still didn't understand because there was so much sleep in my eyes and I didn't know what to do and how to do it. Rather, I was on my feet and reaching the other end of the chamber so that I could pay attention to what was going on but how could I? More sleep filled my
SAGEWhat he was saying didn't make any sense, but I wanted to hear more of it. “What did you say, Knox? And how do you mean?” “Isn't it simple?” He adjusted on the couch but I wondered how I was supposed to know. “You being a Silver Wolf is a good thing for this pack. The members don't see it.” “You're confusing me. I don't understand you.” Again, the Alpha adjusted on the couch. A sigh ran out of his mouth and he let out. “I don't think we should talk about it yet, Sage. Give me some time to process my thoughts. Do you need something?” Why did he act that way? It was my turn to let out a sigh. Even though I wanted to hear the man talk to me about how a Silver Wolf could be of help to him and the Pack, I wished I could not listen to him say it. “Hello, Sage. Did you at least hear me?” I nodded and shook my head. “Forgive me, Alpha Knox. But I heard you. I'm just too overwhelmed by a lot to recall what you said a while ago. Can you remind me?” The man got up. He walked to
KNOXDays had passed. I didn't touch the life of Aella. She deserved to be punished but according to Sage, the one we have done to her was more than enough. I walked through the Pack's compound on this day. More than enough thoughts were running around in my head but one was what to do with the wolves who looked at me as though I had done something wrong to them. “Good morning, Alpha Knox.” “Good morning, all.” I waved at those who saw me and those who didn't. The strength to go about talking was something I didn't have and besides, no one needed to explain to me and let me know when I knew they were all mad at me—I caught up with the living room entrance. The moment I stepped in, all I could feel was relief. Far from the members and their deadly stare. No one said a word about it to me. Maybe they realized I still was the Alpha of The Darkfangs Pack and could have my say. Wasn't that it? “My lord—” the voice of Brian broke me from my thoughts. Looking up, there he was. “You s
