"No ma, no be how much I de sell am," (no ma, that's not how much I can sell it) the dark tall and slim Hausa trader spoke to Doris and Martha in pidgin with thick Hausa accent dripping as he spoke.
"Ok, give us for one thousand five hundred naira..." (Give it to us at the price of one thousand five hundred naira) Martha tried bargaining with him.
Doris was getting tired of standing in the hot sun, surrounded by all kinds of people who are either buying or selling, the noises emanating from the various kiosk located around the market. Sooner or later she would lose her patience and speak badly to the trader or Martha, she wasn't enjoying this market spree but she couldn't voice out her mind.
They have been in the market for close to two hours now and on the list-for-things-to-buy, she was holding in her left hand, they have only been able to buy five out of twenty items listed. She didn't know what possessed her to take Martha to the market with her. It seems now that she was wrong about the middle-aged woman. She thought taking her along would make matters easier as she's lived with her current in-laws before and would know what they liked but the woman has managed to make today quite horrible for her.Doris does not enjoy going to the market, house chores were not her thing, that was her twin sister, Dorine's calling. Dorine was cut out to be the ideal housewife and not her. Ever since they were kids, Dorine has been the perfect girl, the perfect daughter, the perfect cook, and even the perfect student. All Doris could shine in was making new friends and cliques and being the leader of the cheerleading and drama club in their school.
Dorine was praised for virtually everything she excelled in and she succeeded in anything she decided to do, their parents were always proud to show her off to their friends at work, church and school whereas the opposite was the case in Doris' situation.Their parents were successful people when they were alive. Mr. Okpara used to be a professor in one of the prestigious universities in the country and his wife was a fashion designer, she owned an elegant fashion house in Imo state as well. But one day, the cruel arms of death snatched them away. Doris wasn't close to them but she believes that she suffered the most of the impact of their loss and it was all because Dorine went about her usual life as if nothing happened. After they received the news of their parents' demise during their third year in the university four years ago, their lives changed completely.
Dorine who always looked after her totally withdrew and didn't care about her sister anymore. Doris had to grow up and become more responsible, with the threats she was receiving from her aunt about the things she would do to her if she did not graduate with good scores, Doris had to take her studies seriously so she could move out of that miserable house and become her own woman. To become independent.
She focused on her work in the movie industry which she secured, all thanks to John her coursemate. She helped with costumes, makeup, and venue arrangement for every new movie. She was relentless and wanted to make a name for herself in the movie industry, so she started taking part in short films and minor characters hoping that she would get a shot at a big movie one day.
Her dream was about to become a reality until Dorine called her up on that fateful day and coerced her into pretending to be the bride. Now she was here with an old woman in this smelly environment. Her only solace was Dorine's promise to return today, she hoped she would be able to come back in time for the big dinner tonight. Matthew had gone to Osun on the night of their wedding to pick up his parents and other family members who didn't make it to the wedding, so she spent the previous night alone and that realization made her happy.
'What if he had decided to do the deed on their nuptial night,’ she had thought. She prayed in her heart that Dorine makes it in time today or else she might not be able to stop herself from telling the truth. She already heard enough from Matthew on the wedding day, whispering into her ear how he'd make her cum. It was irritating and disgusting to her but she had to play along with a fake smile on her face. She was an actress after all.
She noticed when Martha placed five hundred naira notes in the trader's hand and collected the wrapped up stockfish then put it into the big sack she was carrying. She did not notice the actual price they both agreed on and she couldn't care. All she wanted was to go home, change and sleep off, probably wait for Dorine's return.
They walked off towards another trader under Martha's direction, Doris doesn't know her left from her right when it comes to chores. She simply followed Martha around like her puppet."I hope you are learning one or two things from what we're doing in the market now?" Martha asked as they were walking.
Doris wanted to reply with a sarcastic sentence but thought twice about it and decided to wet her lips with her tongue while nodding her head instead. She does not think she would be able to learn anything about this in sixty more years of her life.
"Good, I decided to go with you today so I could help you get the hang of things. Normally I don't buy these many items but due to the wedding preparations and all that, we couldn't go shopping for groceries in the house. Now that you're the madam of the house, I believe I'll be relieved of that work soon," The woman winked and passed her a small smile.
'Which madam...hmph! Until Dorine comes back first.' Doris uttered in her mind. She was truly bitter about having to spend an extra day in that house.
"The weather seems to be getting dark, can we hurry up so we can go before it pours?" Doris trotted behind the woman.
Martha looked at the sky and nodded her head in agreement, "Bia kanyi ga hu mama Chiboy." (Come let's go and see Chiboy's mother).
The two women continued their journey through the market and Doris was feeling displeased the longer they spent there.
Both Martha and Doris were exhausted after walking around in the busy market almost all day. Having decided that it was better to go home and get started on dinner, Martha hand-selected some things off the list, and immediately they made their way back home. Doris planned to get a good rest before Dorine could come back so she could get back to the daily hustle of her life however, it appeared that Martha had other plans in mind. "Since it's your first day with your new family, why don't you prepare dinner for us? I'm sure you will have a great idea of what to come up with" The revelation had the younger woman's eyes almost falling out of her socket. 'Was this her idea of a joke? Could she read my mind and know that I do not have the slightest idea of cooking.' She thought.
Her hands were getting cold and wet by the second that passed, with each question thrown at her. She felt like she was going to pee on her panties soon. She lost the appetite to continue the food that was placed before her, but it wasn't like she had an appetite in the first place. She made bad food; such that if she ate it in a restaurant she would have lashed out at the cook for putting her money to waste. "What did you study in school and what was your inspiration to study it?" Matthew's mother continued throwing unending questions her way. "Uhm...I studied Business Administration at the University of Benin. I wanted to go into fashion and design but it wasn't easy for me. I love fabrics and clothing materials and styles and colors because...well...my mother used to be into that field and she was my source of inspiration." Though Doris never planned to be emotional about it, the thought of who their parents were in th
Every time you lie, it brings me closer to goodbye ." -Unknown ★ 'D! Wake up D..'The voice sounded so close but she could not see anyone, the entire place was dark. Suddenly, she felt her body move a little and forced her eyes open. Gradually, she adjusted her eyes to the bright light and looked up at the shadow before her. The blurry and bright light before her slowly took an actual form. It was then Doris noticed that she was still seated on the same spot on the sofa, she probably slept off waiting for Dorine's call. Matthew was hunched over her, his face filled with so much concern while he stared intently at her sprawled form."Hey, I know you are probably very tired from the events of the past few days but I don't think sleeping on the couch would make it better," he said, pulling her body to an upright position. Doris grabbed the phone which was stuck in-between the couch; it must have f
They left the house early so they could buy all they needed from the market, and also return in time for the post wedding ceremony. Raphael had mentioned after breakfast; that they were expecting some friends and well-wishers who could not make it to the wedding. They had arranged to come to the mansion to celebrate it and he had no say in it. Martha decided to stay home and get the house ready for the incoming guests. Matthew and his father left to pick up the ones who do not know their way to the location of the house, while Doris and her mother in-law had to rush off to the market to buy some things. As expected, Doris wasn't happy with the turn of events. She only planned to get some underwear, which included some panties and bra, but now they have been shopping for almost an hour and a half for things that are irrelevant as far as she was concerned."So tell me dear, wha
"Nothing hurts more than being disappointed by the one person you thought would never hurt you. " -Unknown ¶¶It was all a new experience for her. Being married. Living with four more occupants in a house. Sleeping on same bed with a man. All these she was recently exposed to because of Dorine. Regardless, it would seem the changes in her life were not going away anytime soon. For the first time in her life, she was travelling as one of the first class passengers on an airplane. She never travelled by one because it was just too expensive for her to afford, now she was currently taking advantage of the services which has been paid for, by her new husband.
“Lie to me, only if the truth will kill me.” -Amyirechi ¶¶Matthew made the necessary reservations and documentary needed to secure them a room. However, Mr Sanchez already reserved a room for them in the best part of Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The VIP section was the earnest desire for every guest which paid to stay at the hotel, it was their dream to afford to pay for even a night there. But Matthew and Doris would be spending two weeks in the section, all expenses paid. Doris looked round the hotel environment as they were being directed to their room by the bellboy. The place was beyond beautiful. The compound was spacious
Never lie to me, unless you're absolutely sure I will never find out the truth. " -Unknown "I wasn't always like this. I used to go swimming with my friends, and I liked it" He linked his right fingers with her left. Tracing the veins on her left hand, with his left finger. They were seated on the edge of the bed, their bodies close to each other."What happened?" She asked."One day, we went out to swim as usual, in the lake we always swam in. We pulled off our clothes, got into the river, and began splashing water on each other. But, what we didn't realize was that the current of the water had changed. One of my friends got his boxers stuck and went under the surface to free himself, we waited for him for a long time. He was taking too long to show up. So, myself and my oth
Knowing the truth may hurt like hell, but knowing that you've been living a lie, feels like burning in hell." -Amyirechi Never in Doris' life, did she ever imagine herself in a place like this. She concluded that Raffles Hotel Singapore was heaven on Earth. So this was what her sister, Dorine has been enjoying for so long. She could never tell if Dorine has been to the Botanic gardens, her sister probably never mentioned it. But they did talk a lot about the various meals, festivals, and locality that Dorine managed to be part of. As they walked the grounds of the evergreen and colourful gardens, beautified by a variety of plants and flowers in their different colours. Her thoughts raced. She was walking steadily beside her husband and the man who volunteered to give them a tour of the garden. He w
Epilogue °•°•°•°•°•°•° Matthew's POV When I arrived at Doris's house in time to take them to the party, I felt relieved that the hurdles of the past week have been put behind me, for now. As soon as the last meeting in Badagry was adjourned, I rushed to the airport to join the last flight heading to Imo State. Even though it cost me extra naira to buy a ticket at the last minute. I missed my sons. I never knew that parenting was this exhilarating. Sure, they are a handful most times, but I would never trade every sacrifices I've made for their sakes just to have a less complicated life. They filled my days with a lot of light. Their charisma and intelligence made me proud to call them mine. When I made the decision to be part of their lives, I knew that I had made the best decision of my life. The most thing on my mind was to freshen
•°•°•°•°°•°•° Three Years Later... Doris POV “Mummy, I can't find my slippers...” Daniel whined again for the third time in one minute. I sighed softly and tried to keep my temper in check. These children would not lead me to my untimely end. “Have you checked your room properly?” I asked, knowing how lazy he could be whenever he's been instructed to do something. Especially, if that job was against his will. “Yes, and David too. We didn't see anything.” he passed a glance at his twin brother. I could drill the truth out of David if I wanted to. However, my older son was too softhearted and I did not want to put him in a tight spot where he had no choice but to either betray his brother and tell me the truth, or lie to me to protect his brother. I decided to giv
•°•°•°•°•°•°•° Doris regained consciousness the next day. She learnt from the nurse that her sister had gone out earlier and that her babies were okay although not completely out of danger. She was glad to set her eyes on the light of day again not to talk of the trauma she experienced yesterday. She closed her eyes and shook her head to clear the thoughts running through her mind. She refused to believe that Matthew could go to such extent just to have his revenge on her. She always expected to be punished for her sins, but she never imagined that spending her time in jail would be the punishment he saw fit. She realized that she would not serve the punishment alone, her children were surely going to be affected.
“Future is the best analyzer of the truth.. ” -Bishop K.K Degaya ♠♠♠♠♠♠Forty minutes later, Dorine had gotten to get them to the hospital with the help of the taxi driver who was kind enough to endure all the stress. She encountered a short difficulty with the hospital procedures at the reception, but she received help as soon as the head nurse appeared. She paced the floors of the waiting area, her hands folded at her back. She looked worried and worked her lips nervously. After five minutes or more, two of the nurses attending to her sister emerged from the room. “What happened?” she rushed towards them, glancing back and forth at the two of them. “The head nurse is inside, she wants to see you” the darker nurse related. She watched as both nu
Lie is poison, a liar is a culprit responsible for the poisoning." -Amyirechi ♠♠♠♠♠♠♠ He clutched a hand over his chest and balanced himself with the help of his walking aid. Matthew rushed to his dad's side and helped him down on a chair. "Dad, try to calm down please." he pleaded. "Dear, what happened?" Ruth said to her husband as she made her way towards him. Raphael Udochi shook off his son's hand from his shoulder and pointed accusingly at him. "There's something definitely wrong in this house, why won't he tell me?" He turned to his wife, and she turned her face away. The guilt could not let her look him in the eye. "Tell me...Ruth, what is everyone keeping from me? Why haven't I seen Dorine and her sist
You had me intoxicated with your lies, and sober with your truths..." -Amyirechi ♠♠♠♠♠ Damian stood and watched quietly, from the balcony of his house, as the twins trudged in from the gate. Carrying their baggage behind. Dorine had called him on the day they checked out of the hotel. She used the hotel line to inform him of the change in plans, and he had promised that his guest house was open to them anytime. He did not hesitate to send the address and directions on how to get to the house, she immediately wrote it down and had headed back to the room to help her sister pack. Now, after being thrown out of the mansion, they were here. In the one place, Dorine never imagined she would ever live in, nor with the person. Doris, on her end, was reluctant to go ahead with her sister's decision
“Amyirechi ” ♠♠♠♠♠♠ Ruth's scream alerted every other person in the house. Matthew was the first person to rush into the guest room. Martha was almost on his heels. She came in afterwards. “Mom, what is it?” he said, very alert and observed the room for any strange occurrence. Ruth shook her head, refusing to believe the revelation. “Ruth, what happened? Why did you scream?" Martha asked. Looking back and forth at the twin's faces.
Despite she felt her heart thumping harder in her chest, she tried as much as she could to put a smile across. Her mind wandered on how to handle the issue on ground while Mrs Udochi walked off into the kitchen, her son trailed behind. Mr Udochi made himself comfortable on one of the sofas and instructed Doris to put on a news channel for him. She knew the channel he watched most because that was all he did back then, when he was recuperating from the heart attack. After she left him, she worried on the best approach to tackle the matter and break their hearts. "They're here," she announced to her twin-who laid on the bed in the guest room-listening to music with her earphones plugged in. "Huh?" Dorine sat up and removed the earphones. "You said..?" Doris paced the room, her expression clouded in worry and unease. She felt arms around her, and loo
“A liar must be a man of great memory. Same goes for a fiction writer...” -Unknown ♠♠♠♠ “Oh! You're home finally.” Martha said, enthusiastic about Doris' presence. Especially, when she sighted the luggage Doris held behind. “Yes,” Doris responded. “I was getting bored of staying in this house all by myself.” Martha chattered as she walked with Doris into the main sitting room. Doris fidgeted and was passing glances at the door. “What's wrong?" Martha, who noticed her uneasiness, inquired. “Ugh...I brought someone you might like to meet,” she related. “Come in D,” Doris called out. Martha eagerly waited for the shadow that was moving across the walls to come into view. Her interest piqued when the shadow
