MAX POV.

It was obvious now. Nadia’s feelings for Richard weren’t just a passing fancy. She wanted him badly, and the fact that he had chosen Tammie over her was eating her alive.

Her anger was barely contained, simmering just beneath the surface.

I leaned back slightly, crossing one leg over the other as I observed her. She was usually so composed, so careful about keeping up appearances.

But here, in this room, with Richard and Tammie sitting almost close together, her mask was slipping.

Interesting, I thought. Very interesting.

Her jealousy was so useful to me. As it is a weapon, a tool to manipulate her further. But for now, I needed to focus.

My thoughts shifted back to the company. If Kenneth handed over his empire to Richard, it would be game over for me.

Richard was no fool…he would notice the discrepancies in the accounts, the missing funds. And once he did, I’d be exposed.

I can’t let that happen.

I needed a plan, and I needed it now. The poison in the fruit bouquet was a good start, but it wasn’t enough. I needed to destabilize the entire family, to create chaos so profound that no one would have time to notice my movements.

I was so deep in thought that I almost didn’t notice Jacob clearing his throat.

“Ahem.”

The sound pulled me back to the present, and I looked up just in time to see Jacob shifting in his seat. His expression was thoughtful, calculating.

What are you up to, Jacob? I thought to myself.

He wasn’t an ally, not by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, he was just another obstacle. But he wasn’t a threat either…not yet. He was too focused on his own petty jealousies to be of any real concern.

Still, I couldn’t ignore him entirely. The man had a knack for sniffing out weakness, and I couldn’t afford to let him catch even a whiff of mine.

I smirked to myself, leaning back slightly as I observed him. Whatever he was about to say, I was ready for it.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nadia glance at me. Her expression was tight, her eyes filled with fear.

She’s worried, I thought, amused. She thinks Jacob knows something.

But I wasn’t worried. Not one bit.

Let Jacob say whatever he wanted. Let him try to play his little games. I wasn’t scared of him. I didn’t sweat, didn’t flinch. I was in control, and I intended to stay that way.

The room was silent for a moment, everyone waiting for Jacob to speak. I could feel the tension thick in the air, but it didn’t faze me.

Let’s see what you’ve got, Jacob, I thought, my smirk widening as I prepared for whatever was about to come next.

RICHARD GARRISON POV.

Sitting in the Johnsons’ grand sitting room, I couldn’t help but feel a little out of place. It wasn’t the opulence or the grandeur that made me uncomfortable…I was used to that. It was the overwhelming attention I was receiving, especially from Mr. Kenneth Johnson.

“Richard,” Mr. Johnson said, his voice warm and proud, “you’ve outdone yourself.

The gifts you bought for Tammy and the family…impeccable taste, truly. You’ve proven time and time again why you’re the perfect match for my daughter.”

His words made my cheeks flush slightly, something I hadn’t felt in years. I wasn’t used to this kind of open praise, especially in front of so many people.

Seated in the room were Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Tammie, Mr. Jacob, Max, Nadia, Alisha, and me. The room felt overly crowded, but the attention was squarely on me.

I could feel their eyes on me…some admiring, some indifferent, and others, well, a bit harder to read.

Perfect match for his daughter, I thought, suppressing a nervous smile. Was I really?

As Mr. Johnson continued singing my praises, I couldn’t help but glance at Tammie. She sat gracefully, her posture perfect, her face calm and composed. She looked every bit the ideal bride, the daughter of a wealthy and powerful man.

But there was something in her eyes that caught my attention. She wasn’t looking at her father or even at me. Her gaze was fixed elsewhere.

I followed her line of sight and realized she was staring at Alisha.

Alisha, seated beside me on the couch, seemed completely aware of the tension she was creating. She was quietly observing the room, her bandaged arm resting lightly on her lap.

Her presence here had been a source of tension since the moment we arrived, and now it seemed to be stirring something in Tammie.

Tammie, I thought, my brows furrowing slightly. Why are you looking at her like that?

For a moment, I considered the possibility that Tammy was simply curious about Alisha. After all, Alisha’s sudden presence in my life was unusual, and Tammie had every right to feel curious…or even suspicious. But the intensity of her gaze made me think it was something more.

Before I could fully process it, Tammie’s eyes met mine.

It was brief, just a fleeting moment, but in that instant, I felt a feeling of guilt.

She quickly looked away, her expression carefully neutral. But I could tell that something was bothering her.

Does she think there’s something going on between Alisha and me?

The thought made my chest tighten. I hadn’t done anything inappropriate, but I couldn’t deny that Alisha’s presence complicated things.

She was vulnerable, relying on me for support, and I couldn’t just abandon her. But how could I explain that to Tammie without making things worse?

I turned my attention back to Mr. Johnson, who was still speaking. He seemed completely unaware of the silent exchange that had just taken place.

“You’re a young man of great promise, Richard,” he said, smiling broadly. “I have no doubt that you’ll take excellent care of my daughter and our family’s legacy.”

I nodded, offering him a polite smile. “Thank you, sir. That means a lot to me.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Max and Nadia exchanging glances.

Nadia’s eyes widened, and for a moment, I thought she might say something, but she remained silent, her gaze darting between me and Max.“I was at the supermarket earlier,” I began, choosing my words carefully. “And I saw Max with the fruit bouquet. MAX POV.I had just finished injecting the apples when I felt a presence behind me. Turning slightly, I saw Jacob approaching, his face twisted in that familiar look of self-importance he always carried.“Max,” he said, his tone casual but with an edge that didn’t go unnoticed. “A word?”I straightened up, slipping the syringe into my pocket. “Of course, Mr. Jacob,” I replied, keeping my voice polite.Jacob stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he looked me over. “I’ve been watching you, Max. You’re ambitious, cunning even. I like that.”I raised an eyebrow, feigning ignorance. “I’m not sure what you mean, sir.”He chuckled, a low, humorless sound. “Don’t play dumb with me. I know what you’re up to. And frankly, I don’t care. In fact, I think we could be useful to each other.”“Is that so?” I asked, tilting my head slightly.Jacob leaned in closer, lowering his voice. “We both want the same thing, don’t we? MAX POVI glanced at Nadia, whose face was pale, her breathing shallow. She wouldn’t dare speak now, not with all eyes on me.I could feel her panic radiating across the room, but I kept my expression neutral, even offering her a faint smile.Time was running out.I stylishly glanced at my wristwatch, noting the minutes ticking by. The poison I had injected into the apple was timed to act slowly, and all of a sudden. It wouldn’t kill instantly but would start with mild symptoms before escalating. I could already feel the faintest twinge in my stomach…a warning sign.“Excuse me,” I said, stepping away from the center of attention. “Mr. Kenneth, if you don’t mind, I’d like to use the restroom.”Kenneth looked up, his expression softening. “Of course, Max. You’ve earned a moment to yourself after all this nonsense.”He turned to the servant who had brought in the fruit earlier. “Show Max to the restroom, please.”The servant nodded and gestured for me to follow. "What could you possibly be doing that’s more important than keeping me updated?"I clenched my jaw, taking a deep breath before responding. "I was in the middle of dinner with Richard. I couldn’t exactly answer your call in front of him, could I?"Nadia’s tone softened slightly, but her impatience was still evident. "Fine. But you need to tell me what’s going on. Have you heard anything new about the wedding?"I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "No, Nadia. I haven’t heard anything else. And even if I had, do you really think I’d tell you in the middle of dinner?"There was a pause on the other end of the line, and I could almost hear her frustration. "You need to stay on top of this, Alisha," she said finally. "We can’t afford any mistakes.""I know," I replied, my voice clipped. "You don’t have to remin

But if you don’t want me to, I understand, and I won’t bring it up again."Richard stared at me for a moment, his expression unreadable. My heart pounded in my chest, though not from fear or nerves. This was the critical moment, the point where I’d see if he’d bend to my request. Finally, he sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Alisha," he said slowly, "why would you even want to come? Perhaps the pain from her injuries was slowing her down. But then another thought crept in, one I couldn’t shake. What if something’s wrong? The memory of the hospital flashed in my mind…her pale face, the nurses bustling around her, and the soft murmur of their voices as they instructed me on how to care for her.She needs rest and support, they had said. She’s lucky it wasn’t worse.Lucky. That word had stuck with me all day. She was lucky, wasn’t she? It could’ve been much worse. But now, sitting here, waiting for her, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was doing enough. Was she comfortable? Was she in pain? I cleared my throat, trying to sound calmer. “I’m just… just getting dressed.”There was a pause, and I could feel his presence lingering just beyond the door. “Dinner is ready,” he said after a moment. “You should come downstairs and eat something.”“Alright,” I replied, forcing a lightness into my tone. “I’ll be there in a bit.”“I’ll wait for you downstairs,” he said, and I could hear the faint sound of his footsteps retreating down the hallway.I didn’t move until I was sure he was gone. MR JACOB POV.The door creaked shut behind Max as he walked away, leaving me standing at the restroom entrance, completely stunned. My mind raced as I stared at the spot where he had just been. How could he possibly be fine? I had heard him coughing violently from inside. I had seen the blood…there was no mistaking it.I looked down at the faint red smear on the floor near the threshold of the restroom. That was real. I wasn’t imagining things. The blood was fresh, unmistakable evidence that something had happened to him there. So how was he walking away, calm and composed, with that infuriating smirk on his face?“This doesn’t make sense,” I muttered under my breath. I stepped into the restroom, my eyes scanning every corner. The sink was still wet, droplets of water clinging to its surface. The mirror above it was fogged slightly, likely from Max leaning in close as he tried to clean himself up.As I moved further in, my eyes landed on something on the edge of the counter. A tiny bo

But go on, if it’ll make you feel better.”He exhaled, his gaze shifting briefly to the floor. “I met her a few days ago. It wasn’t planned. I... accidentally hit her with my car.”I blinked, taken aback for a moment. “You hit her with your car?”“Yes,” he said quickly. “It was an accident. She was crossing the street, and I didn’t see her in time. She’s been recovering, and I felt responsible. That’s why I brought her here…to keep an eye on her.”I stared at him, my expression carefully neutral. “So you hit a woman with your car, and now she’s your responsibility?”“She doesn’t have anyone else,” he said, his voice softer now. “I just... I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”I let out a short, humorless laugh. “The wrong
