ALISHA POV.

Richard was everything a father-in-law could hope for…handsome, successful, and attentive.

Yet, sitting here in this opulent room, surrounded by the grandeur of the Johnson mansion, I felt a knot of unease tightening in my chest.

I could feel Mrs. Daniella Johnson’s gaze on me. It wasn’t a warm, welcoming look; it was probing, calculating.

Her eyes shifted on the bandage on my arm, and I instinctively pulled my hand closer to my side, hoping to shield it from her scrutiny.

Does she suspect something? Or is she simply curious about who I am?

I kept my face neutral, trying not to betray any of the anxiety bubbling beneath the surface. Beside me, Richard seemed completely at ease, his charming smile never faltering as he listened to Mr. Kenneth’s praises.

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Nadia. She was sitting on the opposite side of the room, her expression unreadable to most, but I knew her too well.

There was a funny look of impatience in her eyes, a tension in the way she tapped her fingers lightly against the armrest of the chair as if he couldn't wait to question Richard immediately.

She wants to talk to me.

The realization sent a jolt of unease through me. Nadia had a way of demanding things without saying a word, and right now, her piercing gaze was like a silent command.

I quickly looked away, pretending not to notice her.

Not now, Nadia. Not here.

I tried to focus on the others in the room. My eyes landed on Tammie, who was seated elegantly, her posture perfect, her dress immaculate.

She was beautiful, effortlessly so, with an air of sophistication that made her seem untouchable.

No wonder Richard is marrying her.

The thought came unbidden, and I clenched my fists slightly. Tammie was everything I wasn’t…graceful, poised, and seemingly perfect.

It wasn’t hard to see why Nadia wanted to use me to disrupt the wedding. She hated Tammie, though I still didn’t fully understand why.

Is it jealousy? Or something deeper?

I sighed softly, forcing myself to stay composed. Whatever Nadia’s reasons, I was just a pawn in her game, a tool to help her achieve her goals.

But how far am I willing to go for her?

The question lingered in my mind, heavy and unsettling. Before I could dwell on it further, the sound of Mr. Jacob clearing his throat snapped me back to reality.

The room grew quieter as everyone turned their attention to him. I stole a quick glance at Nadia, who was now sitting rigidly, her eyes flicking briefly toward Max before returning to Mr. Jacob.

There was a calm look of something in her expression…fear? Anxiety?

I couldn’t be sure, but it made my heart race.

What’s going on? What is Mr Jacob about to say? I was told this man is a bad man.

The air in the room felt charged, as if everyone was holding their breath, waiting for the next move in this intricate game of secrets and lies.

And I, caught in the middle of it all, could only sit there and watch as the pieces began to shift.

MR JACOB POV.

“Brother Kenneth,” I said, clearing my throat and adjusting my position on the couch. Every pair of eyes in the room turned toward me, curiosity painted on their faces.

The weight of their stares bore down on me, and for a moment, I felt an inexplicable pressure to say something significant.

“Yes, Jacob?” Kenneth responded, his tone neutral but slightly curious.

I hesitated, looking down at my hands as if they held the answers I sought. Should I tell him what I had witnessed just an hour ago?

The image of Max in the supermarket parking lot, holding that syringe and injecting it into the fruit bouquet, flashed vividly in my mind. My stomach churned at the thought.

"Well..." I started, my voice trailing off as I glanced around the room. Max sat stiffly in his chair, his face an unreadable mask, though his eyes darted to me with a look of something…nervousness, perhaps?

Nadia, sitting beside him, shifted slightly, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Then there was Richard, seated close to a injured lady, his arm casually resting on the back of the couch.

His bride-to-be, Tammie, sat almost nearby, her posture rigid. Even Daniella, Kenneth’s wife, had an air of expectancy about her.

“Speak up, Jacob,” Kenneth said, his voice cutting through the silence.

I swallowed hard. If I exposed Max and Nadia, it would save my brother from whatever poison they had planned. But then again, if Kenneth died, his wealth and company could eventually fall into my hands.

The thought of finally stepping into his shoes, of holding the power and influence I had always envied, was intoxicating. Yet, there was something gnawing at me…a small voice of reason, of morality, perhaps…that made me question whether I could let this happen.

I thought to myself, Would it really be worth it? Letting my brother die just so I could gain what he has?

I glanced at the fruit bouquet sitting on the coffee table, its vibrant colors almost mocking me. I remembered the syringe Max had used.

It wasn’t just a harmless injection…it was something sinister. The way Max had handled it, with that smirk on his face as Nadia watched him, told me all I needed to know.

This wasn’t just a prank or a harmless ploy; it was a calculated move to harm Kenneth.

And yet, I thought again about my own desires. If Kenneth were out of the picture, it wouldn’t take long for the family empire to crumble under the weight of grief and confusion.

And I, the elder brother, could step in as the savior, the rightful heir.

But then, as I looked at Kenneth, sitting there with his usual confidence, unaware of the danger looming over him, I felt a pang of guilt.

He had always been the golden boy of the family, the one everyone looked up to, but he had also been kind to me in his own way. Did I really want his death on my conscience?

I sighed deeply, making my decision.

MAX POV.I had just finished injecting the apples when I felt a presence behind me. Turning slightly, I saw Jacob approaching, his face twisted in that familiar look of self-importance he always carried.“Max,” he said, his tone casual but with an edge that didn’t go unnoticed. “A word?”I straightened up, slipping the syringe into my pocket. “Of course, Mr. Jacob,” I replied, keeping my voice polite.Jacob stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he looked me over. “I’ve been watching you, Max. You’re ambitious, cunning even. I like that.”I raised an eyebrow, feigning ignorance. “I’m not sure what you mean, sir.”He chuckled, a low, humorless sound. “Don’t play dumb with me. I know what you’re up to. And frankly, I don’t care. In fact, I think we could be useful to each other.”“Is that so?” I asked, tilting my head slightly.Jacob leaned in closer, lowering his voice. “We both want the same thing, don’t we? She wouldn’t dare speak now, not with all eyes on me.I could feel her panic radiating across the room, but I kept my expression neutral, even offering her a faint smile.Time was running out.I stylishly glanced at my wristwatch, noting the minutes ticking by. The poison I had injected into the apple was timed to act slowly, and all of a sudden. It wouldn’t kill instantly but would start with mild symptoms before escalating. I could already feel the faintest twinge in my stomach…a warning sign.“Excuse me,” I said, stepping away from the center of attention. “Mr. Kenneth, if you don’t mind, I’d like to use the restroom.”Kenneth looked up, his expression softening. “Of course, Max. You’ve earned a moment to yourself after all this nonsense.”He turned to the servant who had brought in the fruit earlier. “Show Max to the restroom, please.”The servant nodded and gestured for me to follow. She looked uneasy, almost as if she was holding her breath.I narrowed my eyes. If anyone in this room was likely to crack under pressure, it was her. But even she had looked panicked when Max took that bite of the apple and I could tell. That moment replayed in my mind over and over. The way Max had smiled so smugly, biting into the fruit without hesitation. He had chewed it, swallowed it, and even smiled at me afterward, as if mocking my attempt to expose him.Mocking me.I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. MR JACOB POV.My mind drifted back to the supermarket, to the moment I had seen him with the syringe. He hadn’t flinched when I confronted him. Instead, he had acted as though I was the fool, as though my suspicions were baseless. But what if Max had pretended to have injected the fruits without poison being in the syringe. And now, here we were. Max had turned the tables on me, using my own accusations to solidify his position in Kenneth’s eyes.I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. It wasn’t just about Max’s cleverness; it was about Kenneth’s naivety. My brother had always been too trusting, too quick to believe in people’s goodness. And Max had exploited that trust perfectly.“Jacob, are you alright?” Daniella’s voice pulled me momentarily out of my thoughts.I forced a smile, nodding slightly. “I’m fine, just a bit tired.”She gave me a polite smile and returned her attention to Kenneth, who was still talking about Richard and Tammie. But I couldn’t care less about

"What could you possibly be doing that’s more important than keeping me updated?"I clenched my jaw, taking a deep breath before responding. "I was in the middle of dinner with Richard. I couldn’t exactly answer your call in front of him, could I?"Nadia’s tone softened slightly, but her impatience was still evident. "Fine. But you need to tell me what’s going on. Have you heard anything new about the wedding?"I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "No, Nadia. I haven’t heard anything else. And even if I had, do you really think I’d tell you in the middle of dinner?"There was a pause on the other end of the line, and I could almost hear her frustration. Perhaps the pain from her injuries was slowing her down. But then another thought crept in, one I couldn’t shake. I cleared my throat, trying to sound calmer. “I’m just… just getting dressed.”There was a pause, and I could feel his presence lingering just beyond the door. “Dinner is ready,” he said after a moment. “You should come downstairs and eat something.”“Alright,” I replied, forcing a lightness into my tone. “I’ll be there in a bit.”“I’ll wait for you downstairs,” he said, and I could hear the faint sound of his footsteps retreating down the hallway.I didn’t move until I was sure he was gone. MR JACOB POV.The door creaked shut behind Max as he walked away, leaving me standing at the restroom entrance, completely stunned. My mind raced as I stared at the spot where he had just been. How could he possibly be fine? I had heard him coughing violently from inside. I had seen the blood…there was no mistaking it.I looked down at the faint red smear on the floor near the threshold of the restroom. That was real. I wasn’t imagining things. The blood was fresh, unmistakable evidence that something had happened to him there. So how was he walking away, calm and composed, with that infuriating smirk on his face?“This doesn’t make sense,” I muttered under my breath. I stepped into the restroom, my eyes scanning every corner. The sink was still wet, droplets of water clinging to its surface. The mirror above it was fogged slightly, likely from Max leaning in close as he tried to clean himself up.As I moved further in, my eyes landed on something on the edge of the counter. A tiny bo

But go on, if it’ll make you feel better.”He exhaled, his gaze shifting briefly to the floor. “I met her a few days ago. It wasn’t planned. I... accidentally hit her with my car.”I blinked, taken aback for a moment. “You hit her with your car?”“Yes,” he said quickly. “It was an accident. She was crossing the street, and I didn’t see her in time. She’s been recovering, and I felt responsible. That’s why I brought her here…to keep an eye on her.”I stared at him, my expression carefully neutral. “So you hit a woman with your car, and now she’s your responsibility?”“She doesn’t have anyone else,” he said, his voice softer now. “I just... I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”I let out a short, humorless laugh. “The wrong
