NADIA'S POV

Mom’s expression didn’t soften. She raised an eyebrow, her posture stiff. “Nadia, what is this about?”

I clasped my hands together, bowing my head. “I know I’ve messed up,” I said, my voice thick with desperation. “I know I’ve done things I shouldn’t have, but please… give me one more chance. I’ll change. I promise!”

Her silence was unbearable. I risked a glance up at her, but her expression remained unreadable.

“I’ll stay away from Richard and Tammie!” I blurted out, the words tumbling out in a rush. “I won’t cause any more trouble for them. I swear!”

Mom let out a heavy sigh, but she still didn’t speak. Her lack of response only made my panic grow.

“Mom, please,” I begged, tears streaming down my cheeks. “I’ll do whatever you want. I’ll be better. I just… I just need one last chance.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, and for a moment, I thought she might actually listen to me. But then her lips pressed into a thin line, and my heart sank.

“I know I’ve disappointed you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper now. “But I can fix this. I can fix everything.”

The room was silent except for the sound of my quiet sobs. I knelt there, waiting, hoping, praying that she’d say something…anything…to show that she might forgive me.

But she didn’t.

I stayed there, tears dripping onto the carpet, as the weight of her silence pressed down on me.

I knelt there, my breath shaky, tears still glistening on my face. The room felt heavy with tension, but when I dared to glance up, I noticed something.

Mom’s stern expression was softening. The hardness in her eyes was fading, replaced by something warmer…something I recognized. Forgiveness.

“You can stop crying, Nadia,” she said after what felt like forever. Her voice was firm but no longer sharp. “I forgive you.”

Relief washed over me so quickly I almost laughed. That was it? She forgave me just like that? I thought to myself, This was way too easy. All that crying must’ve worked like magic.

“Thank you, Mom,” I said, my voice still trembling as I wiped at my cheeks, trying to appear remorseful. I didn’t want her to think I wasn’t sincere.

“Come,” she said, gesturing toward the bed. “Sit with me.”

I hesitated for a second before getting up from the floor and moving to sit on the edge of her bed. She joined me, and to my surprise, she began patting my hair gently.

“It’s going to be okay, Nadia,” she said, her voice unusually tender.

I nodded, leaning slightly into her touch for effect. Inside, my thoughts were racing. This worked out better than I thought. She always forgives me. She always will.

Pretending to calm down, I sniffled and took a shaky breath, trying to play the part of a humbled daughter. “I’ll be better, Mom,” I murmured, casting my eyes downward.

She gave a small sigh, her fingers still combing through my hair. Then, to my surprise, she leaned down and kissed me gently on the forehead. It felt warm, comforting even…but I wasn’t about to let my guard down.

“You’re my daughter, Nadia,” she said softly, her hand still resting on my head. “I just want the best for you. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

“I know, Mom,” I said, nodding. “I’ll do better. I promise.”

She pulled back slightly, meeting my gaze. Her eyes still held that softness, but there was something else there too…something I couldn’t quite place.

“Good,” she said finally. Then she paused, as if thinking about how to phrase her next words. “You’ll need to start showing it soon, though. Your father and Stanley will be back in one of these days.”

For a second, I thought I’d misheard her. I blinked, confusion settling over me. “What?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

She nodded, sitting up straighter. “Your father and Stanley. They’re coming back from Mexico. It’s been two years since they left, hasn’t it?”

My heart skipped a beat. Two years. Two years since I’d seen either of them. The memories came rushing back, uninvited.

My father’s stern lectures, Stanley’s constant need to act like the perfect big brother. I felt a chill crawl up my spine.

“You mean… they’re coming home?” I asked, my voice faltering.

“Yes,” Mom said, a small smile playing on her lips. “They’ll be here soon, so you’d better prepare yourself.”

I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came out. My thoughts were a chaotic mess, swirling with questions and dread. How was I supposed to face them after everything? How much did they know?

Mom gave me one last pat on the shoulder before standing up. “Now, go wash your face. You’ve been crying too much today.”

I nodded absently, barely registering her words. My mind was still stuck on one thing: Dad and Stanley were coming back. And with them, a whole new storm I wasn’t sure I was ready to face.

“I can’t believe it!” I exclaimed, almost bouncing on the spot as I stood in the kitchen. My mother turned to me with a small smile.

“You’ve been saying that for the past ten minutes, Nadia,” she teased, chopping the vegetables on the counter.

“I know, but it’s been so long since Dad and Ethan came home together!” I said, clasping my hands together. “Just two more days, and they’ll be here. It’s like a dream come true.”

My mother chuckled softly. “Well, I’m glad you’re so excited. It’ll be nice to have everyone under the same roof again.”

I nodded eagerly, then grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. “I think I’ll go up to my room now, Mom. I need to sort out a few things.”

“Alright, darling,” she replied, still focused on her chopping. “Don’t stay up there too long. Dinner will be ready soon.”

“I won’t,” I promised, already turning towards the stairs.

As I climbed the steps, my mind raced. I needed to talk to Max immediately. I had overheard something earlier, and it couldn’t wait. Reaching my room, I pushed the door shut behind me and locked it.

Then I remembered to pass my information to Max.

It’s going to happen soon.”Max paused for a moment. “Did she say when? Has the date been fixed?”“I… I’m not sure,” I admitted. “She didn’t mention a specific date. Just that it’s happening soon.”There was another pause on his end, and I could almost feel his frustration through the phone.“Figure it out,” he snapped. “I don’t care how you do it, Nadia, but you need to find out the details and make sure this wedding doesn’t happen. That’s an order.”An order? My blood boiled at his tone.“Max, I…”B

"That Was Close"“Sir, excuse me!The deep voice startled me, echoing through the dark hallway. I stopped dead in my tracks, my breath hitching. Slowly, I turned around and saw the Chief Security Officer of the company standing a few feet away. His torchlight pointed at the floor where my wallet lay, the brown leather gleaming faintly. My heart thumped painfully in my chest. This wasn’t good. Not good at all.Is that your wallet that just fell off?”“Oh! Yes,” I said, forcing a laugh and stepping toward him. “That’s mine. I didn’t even realize it fell.”The officer crouched down, as he picked up the wallet, and straightened, his torchlight shifting to my face. The beam made me squint, but I held still, forcing my body not to fidget. He was watching me closely now, his eyes narrowing as if trying to read me.“Long night, huh?” he asked, his tone casual but probing.“Yeah, long night,” I replied, nodding too quickly. “You know how it is. A parlor wedding, to be precise. No grand event, no massive guest list. Just a select few of the most reputable elites.”I sat up straighter, my heart sinking. “A parlor wedding? But why? MAX POV"Are you ready yet, Max?" Nadia's voice crackled through my phone speaker, breaking the silence of the early morning. She had called to remind me that I should get ready for our next mission. We were supposed to meet later at night.I groaned, glancing at the clock on my bedside table. 5:15 a.m. I had woken up half an hour earlier to prepare myself for the day.My plan required precision, and I wasn’t going to let Nadia’s constant pestering throw me off."Yes, Nadia," I muttered, barely able to suppress the irritation in my tone. "I’ve been up for a while now.""Good," she said, sounding smug. "You know this has to go perfectly. No mistakes, Max."I rolled my eyes. Nadia had always been a control freak, but I couldn’t deny that her meticulous nature was what made her such a good partner in all of this. "I know, Nadia. Is your plan ready?""Of course it is," she replied, her voice confident. "You just stick to your part, and we’ll get through this without a hitch.""Fine," I sa

"Thank you, officer," I said, trying to mask the overwhelming relief surging through me. Inside, I was elated. This was it. My plan was still on track. The officer stepped aside, and I walked through the door. As I entered Mr. Kenneth's hospital room, a wave of unease settled over me.The air felt heavy, and the faint beeping of the heart monitor added to the tension. There he was, lying on the hospital bed, his eyes closed. His face looked gaunt and pale, the vibrant man I once knew now reduced to a shadow of himself.I stood there for a moment, unsure of how to proceed. He’s just sleeping, I thought to myself, though his stillness made me second-guess.His chest rose and fell steadily, but there was no other movement. NADIA'S POVThe children's park was lively, filled with the cheerful screams of kids on swings and the occasional bark of a dog chasing after a ball.I wasn’t here to enjoy the sunshine or the vibrant energy around me. My mission was clear, and I had no time to waste.Walking toward the seats near the fountain, I spotted Alisha waiting, sunglasses perched on her head and her posture as casual as ever.As I approached, her gaze turned toward me, and a knowing smirk crept across her face."Well, well," Alisha said as I took a seat beside her. "Nadia Slate, in a park of all places. What’s the mission this time around?"I pulled a photo from my bag, sliding it across the table between us. The wind tugged at the edges of the picture before it settled face-up."Take a look," I said simply, leaning back in my chair.Alisha picked up the photo, her eyes narrowing as she studied the man captured in it. Her expression shifted in an instant…her jaw dropped, and she let out a sharp gasp."Is this

This is it, I thought, my excitement bubbling under the surface. But just as I was about to lower his hand to the paper, the door swung open."Time’s up," the police officer announced, stepping into the room. His voice was firm, leaving no room for negotiation. "Your minutes to check on Mr. Kenneth are over."My heart sank. I froze, still holding Mr. Kenneth’s hand. I couldn’t exactly answer your call in front of him, could I?"Nadia’s tone softened slightly, but her impatience was still evident. "Fine. But you need to tell me what’s going on. Have you heard anything new about the wedding?"I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "No, Nadia. I haven’t heard anything else. And even if I had, do you really think I’d tell you in the middle of dinner?"There was a pause on the other end of the line, and I could almost hear her frustration. But if you don’t want me to, I understand, and I won’t bring it up again."Richard stared at me for a moment, his expression unreadable. My heart pounded in my chest, though not from fear or nerves. This was the critical moment, the point where I’d see if he’d bend to my request. Finally, he sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Alisha," he said slowly, "why would you even want to come? RICHARD POV.What could possibly be holding her up?I leaned back in my chair, trying to push away the nagging feeling in my chest. She had been in an accident earlier today, after all.It wasn’t unreasonable to think she might need more time to get ready. Perhaps the pain from her injuries was slowing her down. But then another thought crept in, one I couldn’t shake. What if something’s wrong? The memory of the hospital flashed in my mind…her pale face, the nurses bustling around her, and the soft murmur of their voices as they instructed me on how to care for her.She needs rest and support, they had said. She’s lucky it wasn’t worse.Lucky. That word had stuck with me all day. She was lucky, wasn’t she? It could’ve been much worse. But now, sitting here, waiting for her, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was doing enough. Was she comfortable? Was she in pain? I cleared my throat, trying to sound calmer. “I’m just… just getting dressed.”There was a pause, and I could feel his presence lingering just beyond the door. “Dinner is ready,” he said after a moment. “You should come downstairs and eat something.”“Alright,” I replied, forcing a lightness into my tone. “I’ll be there in a bit.”“I’ll wait for you downstairs,” he said, and I could hear the faint sound of his footsteps retreating down the hallway.I didn’t move until I was sure he was gone. MR JACOB POV.The door creaked shut behind Max as he walked away, leaving me standing at the restroom entrance, completely stunned. My mind raced as I stared at the spot where he had just been. How could he possibly be fine? I had heard him coughing violently from inside. I had seen the blood…there was no mistaking it.I looked down at the faint red smear on the floor near the threshold of the restroom. That was real. I wasn’t imagining things. The blood was fresh, unmistakable evidence that something had happened to him there. So how was he walking away, calm and composed, with that infuriating smirk on his face?“This doesn’t make sense,” I muttered under my breath. I stepped into the restroom, my eyes scanning every corner. The sink was still wet, droplets of water clinging to its surface. The mirror above it was fogged slightly, likely from Max leaning in close as he tried to clean himself up.As I moved further in, my eyes landed on something on the edge of the counter. A tiny bo

But go on, if it’ll make you feel better.”He exhaled, his gaze shifting briefly to the floor. “I met her a few days ago. It wasn’t planned. I... accidentally hit her with my car.”I blinked, taken aback for a moment. “You hit her with your car?”“Yes,” he said quickly. “It was an accident. She was crossing the street, and I didn’t see her in time. She’s been recovering, and I felt responsible. That’s why I brought her here…to keep an eye on her.”I stared at him, my expression carefully neutral. “So you hit a woman with your car, and now she’s your responsibility?”“She doesn’t have anyone else,” he said, his voice softer now. “I just... I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”I let out a short, humorless laugh. “The wrong
