Kihara and Leila walked back to the pack house near evening. In Leila’s hands, three rabbits were held up by their scruff, dripping of blood were her knives had pierced them, very much dead. Kihara had tried once or twice to shoot a rabbit, but her gun hand still needed much training, and her heart like Leila had pointed out, needed toughening. Kihara’s stomach had held out for most of it, but she could not help feeling queasy. She’d eaten deer meat but she could not bare the thoughts of the rabbits flayed and cooked into rabbit stew.

Leila passed the rabbits to the cook like She’d promised then went up to the room she shared with Brody to clean up. Kihara retired to her own room too.

She was in the shower when Asher came in. He quickly shed his clothes and joined her, hugging Kihara from behind, his mouth in her ear, he whispered. “Wanna save water?”
