RICARDO’S POV
My phone began ringing while I was driving back from the secret mental health care hospital my mom was in. I didn't want anyone to know that she was even still alive, so far only Angelo whom I trusted the most among my men in the gang knew and swore to keep it a secret. That was why my men and my escorts didn't follow me. Aside from that, I never went out of my residence alone. It's too risky given that I was the mafia king. I checked the person who might have been calling me and saw that it was Angelo, the guy I trusted the most in my gang. Angelo began working for me when I was newly made the king of all mafia gangs after my father passed away. Hoping he wasn't calling me because of a problem, I picked up the call with one of my hands still on my steering wheel. “ Speak, I'm listening “ I answered the call with my not-so-obvious Italian. Angelo didn't normally call me unless there was a valid reason behind it and I feared there was trouble that why he was calling. “ Boss, one of our shipments has been hijacked “ Angelo’s baritone voice boomed through the speaker of my phone. My worst fears had been confirmed, but who dared to hijack my shipment? Everyone in the mafia world knew that I, Ricardo D’Arezzo never joked with my shipment. The person who hijacked it must have had a lot of nerves to do so. “ Find out who…. “ But before I could finish passing the instruction to Angelo I began to hear gunshots and see bullets flying towards me. Shit, I cursed and ended the call. The worst thing was that the people that were firing at me weren't driving behind me. They were driving towards me from the front but hadn't drawn too close yet. Two bullets unexpectedly broke through my windscreen and shot me in my chest area. I yelped in pain, reaching out to take out my gun, and began to shoot at them. I saw a bridge ahead of me and when I drove through still shooting at them, I discovered that they parked their two cars blocking the way out of the bridge and ten armed men alighted from each of the cars, so I stopped my car immediately. Since I was the mafia king, I was familiar with every mafia gang in my city, because before any gang was created, they always came to me for permission. But these men didn't look familiar at all which got me wondering. I parked a safe distance away from them and pretended to be dead due to the bullets they shot in my chest, which I was profusely bleeding and getting weak. When they noticed I stopped shooting at them, three men walked towards my car, one holding a gallon of what I couldn't yet fathom, while the rest seven stood behind their cars taking cover. Through my half-squinted eye, two men amongst three men who walked forward from the others walked to my car door but didn't open it. They just looked inside and when they saw I was bleeding profusely with my eyes closed, they assumed I was dead and nodded their heads to the one holding the gallon. After which they walked away to meet the guy holding the gallon. Once they were standing with him he opened the gallon and poured the content on the ground which began flowing towards my car until it settled on the ground underneath my car. It was then it dawned on me that they were trying to burn my car and make it explode. When the man was done pouring the fuel on the floor he lit his lighter and threw it on the fuel which immediately caught flames and the men turned their back walking away. When the fire started drawing closer to my car and I saw that the men were leaving, I quickly opened my car door and jumped down into the river beneath the bridge with great difficulty since I was shot and had lost a lot of blood. I had to be alive to get back at these assholes. Immediately I jumped down the bridge, I heard my car explode before my body finally went into the river. I tried to swim but each time I did, I felt intense pain and discomfort whenever I tried, the pain intensified more and more until everywhere went pitch black. ***************** The next time I opened my eyes, I saw a gorgeous purple-eyed brunette lady staring at me. I was instantly fascinated and mesmerized by her eye color. I wondered how a human would have such eye color or was I dead? Immediately the purple-eyed brunette saw that I was awake, and she rushed out. I took that opportunity to sit up and take in my present environment. I was in a room that didn't look as luxurious as my house but it was conducive and still had a homely feeling. So I wasn't dead after all. The brunette came back with a glass of water and seemed displeased when she saw me sitting up on the bed. “You shouldn't be stressing yourself now, it's a miracle you are even alive,“ She said with her voice which sounded melodious to my ears and then she tried to feed me the water by herself. “Here have some water,“ she said as she fed me the water and I was reluctant but drank it because my throat felt very dry. Then she went on to say while still giving me the water “You’ve been passed out for five days now and…“ But before she could continue talking she was interrupted by my sudden coughing. Hearing her say I had been unconscious for five days instantly made me choke on the water I was drinking. I knew my men would be worried and searching everywhere for me. So I spoke for the first time since I woke up “Please can I make use of your phone?“ My voice came out a bit hoarse, while she rubbed my back to help calm me down. She gave me a questioning look but still gave me her phone. I knew Angelo’s number by heart so I quickly typed it in and dialed his number. He picked up after the third time that it rang. “Hello, this is Angelo Diaz on the line,“ Angelo said after he picked up the call. “ It's me, “ I said and that was all it took for Angelo to recognize my voice and his voice immediately changed to that of worry and concern. “Boss we have been searching everywhere for you, our perimeters got breached and we got attacked the same day that you went missing. What happened?“ Angelo asked with concern evident in his voice. “I'll explain everything to you when I get there. Track the location of this number and come pick me up immediately“ I said and ended the call. Then I gave the phone back to the brunette lady. “You can't go yet, you are not fully healed and I haven't finished your treatment“ She pointed out. I wasn't used to having a lady care about me this way and being with a lady like this aside from the females in my gang and mafia world or a business meeting was new to me. So I didn't know the right words to say to this beautiful lady who saved me. “What's your name?“ I asked her. “Valentina Di Maria“ She answered and went to a table stand to bring medicine for me. I was grateful to this lady but I had to go. “Look, Valentina, I have to go now, my people are in danger. Don't worry I will get better when I get home“ I said while trying to stand. “But I'm a doctor and…“ Valentina wanted to continue talking but was interrupted by me again. “I have a personal doctor too, don't worry,“ I said and stood staggering a little while standing but gained my balance after a few seconds. Valentina sighed and stretched the tray that she was holding that had some pills and a glass of water on it. “Since you have made up your mind at least take these painkillers before you leave, “ She said urging me to drink the painkillers. I drank the pills to show my gratitude and also because my body ached a bit. Then I sat on the bed waiting for Angelo to come pick me up. While Valentina left the room. While waiting for Angelo, I couldn't help but think that those people who tried to kill me and the one who attacked my men might be working hand in hand to destroy me. It was no coincidence that the day some gang tried to try to attack my home, that same day some men too tried to kill me. This meant that someone out there wanted me dead and I guessed that the person wanted to get my position and title. This only meant one thing. War was coming to my doorstep. My thoughts were interrupted by Valentina who opened the door halfway and peeped in notifying me that Angelo was there. I stood up immediately feeling a bit energized and walked out of the room. My gaze locked with Valentina’s for a moment before I walked to where she stood in her well-furnished parlor, seemed like she came from money. She opened the door for me without saying a word to me. I walked out and was unhappy to see Angelo with bruises and a bandage on his wrist. But Angelo looked more than happy and relieved to see me. I walked faster to him as I examined his body with my eyes. While my men bowed their heads to me as I walked towards them, of course, Angelo wasn't as stupid as me not to come out without escorts who were fully armed. “We thought you were dead Cardo, “ Angelo said to me and I sighed. I knew he was really worried because he only called me Cardo on rare occasions when he was scared. “We'll talk about it on our way home,“ I said to him and he nodded. He went to thank Valentina before he came back and entered the back of the car. When I wanted to enter the car, I couldn't resist the urge to turn and look at Valentina one more time. And when I did, she just nodded at me before going in and closing her door. There was something about her that was alluring and steered up a feeling inside me, but sadly my life didn't permit me to search further to know what the feeling was. The only things on my mind were hunting down and spilling the blood of the men who tried to kill me and my gang members whom I considered as family. They planned on bringing the war to my doorstep but I was going to take it to their doorsteps instead.VALENTINA’S POV I knelt in front of my parents and elder brother’s graves with tears rolling down my eyes as I reminisced about how life was when they were still alive and we lived happily. We were the Di Maria family living peacefully and minding our business. My brother Taviano Di Maria would always take me to a river on the outskirts of our city telling me that we'd get to see a mermaid because he knew I loved mermaid tales. My Dad was a businessman who was benevolent enough to show my uncle, his younger and only brother Santiago Di Maria his way of business and they both excelled together. When I was 5 years old, we were all going on a holiday when armed men ambushed us on the same bridge my brother Taviano used to take me to, and the armed men began shooting at us. My mum Rosalia Di Maria pushed me into the river to save me before they shot her. Luckily a woman saved me and took me to my Uncle Santiago when she saw the news on TV that they were searching for me. My
RICARDO’S POV When I got into the car Argo pulled into the driveway and drove off with my men in the other jeeps following suit. It pained me to see my men hurt, especially Angelo whom I have taken to be like my younger brother. But the Mafia's code as a leader was never to show emotions in front of your men. So I buried all my emotions and kept my usual cold expression as I asked “Give me our situation report,“ I instructed Angelo. “When you left that day at exactly 2 pm, our alarms began blaring notifying us that someone had broken into our estate, before we even had the chance to check who, we began hearing gunshots, many of our men were killed but we fought them till we killed each one of them,“ Angelo explained sadly. “What happened to you, boss?“ Angelo asked and I discovered we were already pulling into my estate. “We'll continue this discussion in my study,“ I said and silence ensued till we reached the main house and got out of the car with Angelo walking by my side. I
RICARDO’S POV The person I saw sitting on the chair being mishandled and roughly tied to the chair was none other than Valentina, the woman who saved me. “Boss, isn't that the lady whose house we came to pick you up from earlier today? I mean the one who saved you?'' Angelo whispered to me. Angelo also recognized her, so that meant I wasn't just imagining things. Before I could order my men to wait before removing the blindfold from Valentina, they removed it. Her purple eye which I liked a lot popped open but she squinted trying to adjust her sight. I stood rooted where I was, utterly confused and not knowing what to do, but still, not even for a second did I remove my eyes from her. Her eyes widened with realization when she made direct eye contact with me. “ Mr?“ She asked as she scanned everyone standing around me with a gun and her gaze lingered on my bloodstained hands and shirt with fear. She then turned, seeing blood on the floor and the dead men with their brains shot ou
VALENTINA’S POV I tried to open my eyes but all I could see was darkness, then the last events that happened before I passed out came flooding to my mind and I gasped. Was I dead? I asked myself inwardly and wanted to try to lift my hands but found out that I was restrained. I began to struggle to free myself then I heard a voice. “If you move one more time I'll kill you before we even get to meet the boss, don't test my patience young lady,“ A deep masculine voice said with warning. “Who are you and where are you taking me?“ I asked not minding what the man said. “Shut up,“ The masculine voice said again and tied my mouth while I struggled for him not to, but it was all to no avail because he was stronger than I was. “Drive faster Rocco,“ The masculine voice said, and only then did I realize I was in transit. Where the hell were they taking me to, I thought to myself as fear instantly enveloped me. I decided not to struggle anymore since I knew that they were dangerous and re
VALENTINA POV When I looked to see who it was while I struggled to set myself free, I wouldn't say I was surprised to see that it was the lady with a lot of piercings who was trying to strangle me. As far as I was concerned I couldn't trust anyone in this gang that kidnapped me. So It didn't come as a surprise to me to see the lady looking at me with hatred written all over her face as she tried to strangle me. I tried to shove her away from me but she was stronger than me. I began to gasp for breath as her grip on my neck became tighter, and my sight began to get blurry. I guess this was the way I was supposed to die, I stopped struggling with the lady whom I didn’t even know her name yet. I gave up and just let her choke me. Before I finally embraced Abyss, I saw Ricardo running towards me with blood stains on his shirt and then I blanked out. ************** My eyes fluttered open but due to the bright light which illuminated the room, I closed them again and waited a few seco
RICARDO’S POV When Diego came to my estate with his men, without even telling Valentina she refused to go with him. I figured that maybe it was her uncle who was forcing the marriage on her. Sometimes, ladies always had to go through difficult times with this kind of stuff, and situations like this always made me glad that I wasn't a woman. I knew Diego’s gang was no match for mine. The only reason I was shot on my shoulders again was because I was distracted. That was when I saw Rosalia trying to strangle Valentina. Even though I was shot I didn’t feel pain as much as I should have at that moment due to the rage within me. Because as far as I was concerned, I didn’t give Rosalia the order to do what she was doing. Since I was born I had the principle of never hitting a woman but I punched Rosalia out of anger. Sadly I got to where they were, Valentina had already passed. “You better pray to whatever God you serve that she isn’t dead because if she's dead, then consider yourself
VALENTINA’S POV I didn't like how Ricardo suddenly left my room after giving me the pasta which he dished out for me by himself. I wondered what was so important that made him dash out of my room when we were in the middle of a serious discussion. Then I gasped when realization dawned on me. Could it be that my uncle had come to take me home? I literally jumped out of bed in happiness and walked to the door of my room. In movies and books which I read in the past about Mafia gangs. When a person was kidnapped, they were always locked in a room. I became discouraged when I thought about that but then again, those were just books and movies. So I decided to try my luck and turned the doorknob in a bid to open the door. My eyes widened when I heard the shrieking sound the door made and I slowly opened the door. For him to have forgotten to lock the door means he must have really been in a hurry. I peeped outside to be sure none of his men were in sight. When I saw no one in the hall
VALENTINA’S POV When I looked out the window and saw Ricardo talking to someone on the phone. Suddenly he turned to look at my window and that was when our eyes met. But it didn’t last long because several bullets began flying in the air. Ricardo ran to hide behind a wall using it to hide from being shot and began to shoot back. Thank Goodness that the window in the room I was kept in was bulletproof because some bullet hit it but the glass didn't break. I checked to see where the bullets were coming from only to see that it was Diego and his men. There was a fierce shoot-out between Diego and Ricardo’s men. But what got me worried was it looked like Diego was getting the upper hand because it looked like a surprise attack. I stood and watched everything through my window as men on the opposite side of the gang got gunned down. It was like I was watching an action movie. Never in my life had I ever imagined that I would witness such a scene. What made me more worried was when I
RICARDO’s POVThe next time I opened my eyes after Valentina sedated me, I was feeling much better.I wasn’t feeling as weak as I was. No one was in the room. Then I remembered that I had seen my Mom. The relief that washed over me seeing that she wasn’t dead like I assumed, was what moved me to tears not minding that Valentina was there.I felt gladdened knowing that Santiago’s plans didn’t work. Gosh, that man was going to suffer. I was going to make sure of that.I couldn’t get out of bed due to the IV fluid that was connected to my body and I really needed to talk to Angelo. When I looked around the room, I saw that my phone was placed on a small stool that was beside my bed.I took the phone and dialed Angelo’s line. He picked up the call after the third ring.“Where are you?” I asked.“I went to get your Mom what she is craving to eat. How are you holding up?” He answered.“Alright. I’m much better than before. Hasten up and get back here. I need to know what's been going on si
VALENTINA’S POVI was shocked to see Ric’s mom standing in front of the door. How the fuck she did manage to get up?The sedatives I gave to her were very effective and strong even for a young person, talk more of an old person. The sedative was supposed to knock her out for a day and it was nearly 6 hours since I sedated her. Yet here she was standing in front of us.Ric on the other hand looked like he had seen a ghost.“Mom?” He called out unsure if his eyes were lying to him or not.“It’s me, son,” His mom answered with teary eyes and went to hug him.It was the first time I saw Ric cry. He shed tears like a baby while hugging his mom and it was understandable why he was acting this way.“I thought you died,” Ric sniffled when his mom pulled away from him and caressed his tear-stricken cheeks.Angelo walked over to them and gave them a handkerchief which they used to clean each other's faces.“I survived and I'm here now okay?” She said and Ric nodded his head like a baby.“Okay a
RICARDO’S POVI saw Valentina being dragged away from me while I was in chains by Santiago. Valentina was crying and begging me to help her while she was being dragged away by Diego and his men.I tried to set myself free but I couldn't. I was scared and frustrated. I had to do something. I had to help Valentina. That was when my eyes fluttered open only to realize that it was just a dream.I woke up in a room that looked strangely familiar. IV fluids were connected to my veins and the life support machine was beeping steadily.I tried to move my hands for a while but I felt numb. An artificial ventilator was on my nose which I so much wanted to take off. After a series of trials, my hands moved and I removed it.It took all the strength in me for me to sit up on the bed. I looked pathetic and this aggravated my anger. Diego and Santiago Dimaria were the cause of all this.“How many days did I pass out?“ I muttered as I turned to check the wall clock on the wall.I gasped when I reme
VALENTINA’S POVWhen I turned and saw that Ric’s mom was the one who just spoke, I was dumbfounded and tongue-tied. I just continued staring at her.“ Would Cardo be okay? “ She asked again with worry evident on her face. That was when I regained my composure.“ Uhmm, yeah, yeah. He’ll be fine, “ I lied to her with a smile and a look of assurance on my face. That was all I could do at that moment. I didn’t want to make her more worried because I didn’t know for sure what was wrong with her yet.I couldn’t possibly just tell her that her son was in a coma and we weren't sure when or if he would wake up. That would devastate the poor woman.“ Alright, “ She said but didn’t look convinced. She went back to how she was before she spoke. Not wanting her to be that way, I decided to check on Ric a little later. For now, I needed to strike up a conversation with his mom at least every day to get her back to her normal self. So I walked over to her and sat down on the chair across from where
VALENTINA’S POV“ Please can I ask you for a favor? “ Angelo asked me suddenly after he tilted his head and thought for a while. I wondered what favor he wanted to ask of me. “ Sure. If it's within my power I'll help, “ I found myself saying to Angelo. I didn't know why I couldn't say no to him.“ Can Mrs D’Arezzo stay here with you while I go get things back in order at the estate? I'll leave some of the men here to stand guard and don't worry they won't be caught unawares ever again, “ Angelo said to me.“ First I need to know her condition before I can let you leave her here with me. I need to know what I'll be dealing with, “ I said to Angelo. This was the perfect opportunity for me to know what happened to the beautiful woman and there was no way I was gonna miss the opportunity now that it had presented itself.“ I can't go into details because it's my story to tell. But all I can tell is that she has never said a word ever since her husband's demise, and she began to show sign
VALENTINA’S POV When the guy and two men came to carry Ricardo up, Ricardo began gasping for air. As if that wasn’t enough we heard noises coming from the side of the house. I was too focused on helping the wounded to pay attention to what was the cause of the noise. So I rushed inside the house with the men who helped carry Ricardo’s body inside. Ricardo was still gasping for breath and I was worried that he might go into a coma or he might even die. So I told them to place him on the table in his sitting room. His men laid him on the table and I rushed to his side. “Calm down Ric, you’re not gonna die today. Not while I’m here. Just try to take calm breaths okay?“ I said to him and he nodded his head frantically as he tried to take calm breaths. “I am Angelo. Thank you for what you did out there. Please let me know whatever you need right now to stabilize him,“ The guy who came to pick Ricardo up from my house said to me with a look of gratitude on his face. So that was his nam
