“Valerian!” a cry came from outside and my feet rushed to the door, my body having recognised the voice before my brain could comprehend what was happening. I yanked the door open and almost broke down crying at the sight before me, “Queen Lyla!” Bethany gasped from behind me. I scooped her into my arms, my eyes searching for any unwanted presence before rushing her into the living room. “Valerian put me down, we don’t have much time!” she rushed out the command as she struggled to get down. Silently obeying, I put her down, taking note of how she looked and it wasn’t pretty. Her hair, that was always neatly made, looked like a bird’s nest; twigs and leaves hanging from the knots. Her long white sleeping robe dirty and bloody from her waist down, she looked a royal mess; with a bunch of blankets wrapped around her upper half. “My Queen, what happened?” Beth asked as she handed me my medicine bag.

Sometimes days in a row and they just… stopped?” I said, laying on Damien's chest, tucked in comfortably but sleep far from me. “I want to believe that we finally got the last of them, but it can't be that easy” he said, confirming my suspicions. We hadn't had an attack in two weeks, and yes, it's been a very welcome relief, but it kept me on edge. “What if it actually is over? Wouldn't it be a relief to not hold a funeral every other day?” Sapphira said, even though I knew she was worried as well. “That would be too good to be true Sapphira, they're probably gearing up for an even bigger attack. Get our guard down then strike when we least expect it!” Roman growled darkly, the sound sending shivers down my spine, and not the good kind. “We've taken too much loss over the past thirteen years, we can't afford any more. We need to be ready for anything” Damien said, making me sigh and burrow my n
Ezra at 6 Damien's pov “We need to put together teams of highly skileld trackers and warriors to go out and hunt these things down!” I said, trying to ignore the headache that had been trying to crack skull open. “Wouldn't that be throwing them right into the jaws of our enemy?” Lucien asked, and even though I understood his point, waiting for them to surprise us always ended with someone dying.“People die with every attack, and we never know when the next one will be. If we hunt them down, we may have an advantage” I said, wishing I could some up with a better idea, but failed.“The element of surprise does sound like a good advantage, maybe that would help us locate where they're coming from. It's been four years and we still don't know where these things are coming from. They just show up ready to take us out one by one!” Alari growled, frustrated with the whole situation and I couldn't blame her. We'd been at war with these things this entire time and still knew next to nothi
Ezra at 2 yearsAlari's povDamien disappeared three hours ago and I was getting worried. I didn't want to use the bond to find him because I didn't want it to look like I was spying on him, but three whole hours? Without a single word? What if something happened to him?“We'd know” Sapphira said, making me internally roll my eyes. “Mason's gone too, yet I'm here doing just fine” Pearl said, waving her visibly shaking hand, which was suspicious. She could never lie to me.“You're more nervous than me, and trying to play it cool, which means you know what they're up to” I said, squinting my eyes at her.“What?! No I don't” she said, a little too loud and fast to be telling the truth, her eyes looking everywhere but at me. Lier! “Pearl! Talk! Now!” I growled at her, which made her shrink in her seat.“Let the girl be, they're back” mom said, coming into the kitchen with Ezra trailing behind her, making Pearl sigh heavily and I just squinted my eyes at her in warning, her gulp telling
Alari's pov “How much longer is this going to TAKE!” I screamed the last word as another contraction wrecked my body, sending waves of unimaginable pain to my mind. “Just a bit more Luna, try to relax” Loren, my nurse, said, making me see red.“Tell me to relax one more time and I'll rip you to shreds!” I growled lowly, feeling my fingers frost over. “It's okay baby, I'm here, focus on me. You're doing great” Damien tried to quell my anger, his hand rubbing up and down my back. I felt my mind lose itself in the intense heaviness on my lower back, sparking a flame of rage within me. “Oh shut up. And get your hands off of me! This is all your fault!” I exploded at him, but a whine slipped from my lips the moment his hands left my body, lifted up in surrender. I had no idea what it was, I just hated him, resented him for putting me through so much pain, but I also needed his touch. It wasn't taking the pain away, the contact just made me warm on the inside, making the pain slightly
Alari's pov Waddling into the library as fast as I could, my eyes rounded before relief flooded me.“Pearl! Hide me!” I said, moving as fast as I could while reaching out my hands for her to grab.Aaaaah yes, reduced from a war hero to a heavily pregnant, waddling mess, how glorious!“Alari!” Dad's voice came first, followed by rushed foot steps.“She's in here!” Pearl yelled, making me freeze where I stood, my eyes going wide with shock.“You traitor!” I grabbed the closest book to me and chucked it at her, watching her laugh as she dodged my weapon of destruction.“What's going on?” Mason asked, coming out from behind a shelf. “Somebody doesn't want to drink her medicine” Pearl sang, swaying side to side like she was enjoying my torture.Dad burst through the door with my grandfather right behind him. I grabbed another book and spun to face them, threatening them with it. “Don't fight, just take a little sip or two” dad said, raising his empty hand up in surrender. I growled at
Alari's pov “Alari! Wake up, I need you to wake up now!” a pretty voice floated over me, making me groan. Fuck! What was that pain! Why couldn't I open my eyes?!“Baby listen to me, I need you to open your eyes, right now!” Pretty voice is panicking, wonder why?“Open your eyes!” Pretty voice wasn't so pretty when it was giving me a headache.Fucking ouch! My eyes fluttered and I was met with blurry darkness, then green, and they fluttered closed again.I felt like I was being pulled, no, dragged, by my arms and they fucking hurt!“Baby please, wake up!” Sobbing, why was she sobbing? My eyes fluttered again but this time, a blinding white greeted me, and a face, a pretty blurred face shouting over me.“That's it, come on! Fight the darkness, ignore the pain, wake up!” She said, my eyes clearing a little.“M..mom?” Speaking burnt my throat, why was it so dry?Darkness enveloped me again, but I fought it, and opened my eyes again.“Oh, somebody calling her mommy? Don't worry my littl
Alari's pov “Kill them! Kill all of them!” Helena screeched, making her army spring into action. “Don't you dare leave my side!” Damien growled.“Don't you dare leave my side!” Vivica repeated, cracking her neck.Chaos, that's the best way to explain what was happening. Cal and his group jumped from the trees like samurai, cutting down the creatures they fell on. Stopping the first wave from reaching us.But there was too many, and soon enough, they got past them. Grandpa, who was in the front line, broke the spear he'd been holding in half and drove the two sharp ends through the chests of two beasts that had flung themselves at him. They were brutal, and unforgiving, and one by one, the beasts fell, one after the other but there were too many, and without fail, I found myself driving my crystal clear spear into inky black fur.I didn't get a chance to celebrate my kill because another one launched itself over the dead one, coming straight for me. Literally thinking on my toes, I
Alari's pov “Viv come on, we didn't come here to fight” Cal shook his head, before turning his pained gaze to me.His eyes held longing, and when his hands clenched, I knew he was holding himself back. Before me was a man that grew up with my mother, trained with her, loved her, even when she couldn't reciprocate.Unrequited love, and then she died… how sadVivica closed her eyes, breaking eye contact with my grandfather and breathed deeply.“I'm sorry, that's not the first impression I want you to have of me” she spoke softly, her words directed to me. She had no idea I knew all about her, how feisty she was, her temper, and all the trouble she and my mother got into. “We just want to know you, and Roan is hogging you to himself!” She sent a glare my grandfather's way before relaxing her gaze when she returned it to me.“And you will, but right now, we must leave” grandpa said with an edge to his voice, leaving very little room for argument but the change is Vivica’s expression to
Alari's pov The clothes my grandfather had given made us blend in, well, me more than Damien but he was pretty close and looked very, very yummy. With his muscled arms on display, I wanted to rip the entire shirt of and feast on him!“You two look great” grandfather said as he turned away from the river to face us.“Thank you” I smiled, watching a little sadness flicker in his eyes. I must be wearing my mother's clothes.“How about a tour of the realm of creation” he said, making me wonder what he meant by realm of creation, I thought this was the Kingdom of the dark elves…?I wanted to ask what he meant but a bubbling feeling of impending doom pushed the questions aside, I needed to warm him about Helena.“Grandpa, we need to talk about something, it's important” I said, trying not to show how scared I actually was. If anything happened to them because of me, I don't think I could live with myself.“What is it?” He frowned, giving me a once over before his eyes settled on mine.“N
Valerian’s pov I rushed into my home as the wind picked up rather rapidly and the sky was darkening quite fast; it looked like there was going to be a big storm. ”This can’t be a good sign” my wife said looking out the kitchen window. A sudden storm on a day like this is never a good sign but we had to be hopeful, the queen was in labour. “I know love, but we must have faith in the Goddess” I said, hugging her from behind. “It should have been you! Everyone knows it should have been you delivering that baby!” she huffed, leaning her back into me. I could feel her worry, and it took everything in me to not succumb to my own. “The King knows best love” I said, rubbing my hands up and down her arms, hoping that was at least enough to calm her a little, but my efforts did nothing to soothe her, not even a little. She pulled away from my embrace and took a few steps away; throwing the dish rag she’d been using to wipe the counter into the empty sink. “The King is a fool!” she ye...
