Silver and shadow were thrown on the fortress's stone walls by the moon's spectral brilliance. Leaning on the balcony railing, Aiden stared down at the courtyard. He relived the snippets of a furious exchange between Damon and Iris, their words piercing and tense. Even though he had happened upon them by chance, the weight of their conversation hung over him like a dark, ominous storm cloud.

Aiden was now certain that Iris was not who she claimed to be. Damon, a guy shrouded in mysteries, was similarly mysterious. Aiden could no longer ignore the unstable equation they created together.

His slumber was interrupted by the sound of footfall. When Aiden turned abruptly, he saw Iris moving quickly down the hallway with her head down as if she was deep in concentration. She moved with intention and purpose. He paused for a while, caught between interest and caution. Then he sighed resolutely and followed.

The warm light of a solitary candle created shimmering shadows on the walls of Iris's

The woodland was illuminated by the moon's silvery radiance as it hung high in the nighttime sky. Iris's wrist hurt more and more, making it difficult for her to walk steadily. The brand burst with an unearthly brilliance, and she gripped her arm, teeth clenched. Even though it has burned before, it seemed stronger and more persistent tonight. It was as if the mark had a mind of its own, drawing her toward the Moonlit Clearing."Not right now," she whispered to herself as she stumbled over rough terrain and roots. But there was no use in resisting. The unrelenting force that was leading her eventually brought her to the clearing, where an odd energy was buzzing in the air.The middle of the glade was lit by a shaft of moonlight, and a shimmering figure started to take shape within it. In front of Iris stood the Moon Goddess, bright and ethereal. There was urgency in her silver eyes. The goddess murmured, "Child," her voice resonating in the breeze like a tune. Quiet anxiety permeated the packhouse, a symphony of cautious looks and murmured words. As Iris went out the back door, Aiden stood close to the edge of the common area, staring at her. His stomach twisted uneasily as his misgivings about her tore at him. She was concealing something significant from him. And he found it increasingly difficult to trust her the more she ducked. His instincts, however, still begged him to keep her safe.Outside, the trees were softly glowing in the moonlight, although there were still shadows at the margins. As if pulled by an unseen thread, Iris walked quickly and deliberately. Careful not to draw attention to himself, Aiden trailed after her. He could no longer disregard her as a mystery.Iris arrived at a remote clearing far into the forest, where a pack of wolves stood, their stances stiff and suspicious. These were not the wolves who belonged to the pack hierarchy or Damon. These were the rebels who spoke of freedom and overthrow. Although she had

Her mark tingled with an almost magnetic pull as the weak moon cast jagged shadows. She took a moment to look at the wrist bearing the odd symbol, which was dimly shining as if it were calling her on. Now that the packhouse was well behind her, she felt both liberated and afraid. The remains of an old temple towered ahead, their moss-covered stones and splintered pillars radiating a sense of solemnity. Even though she had never been here before, the mark had led her with perfect accuracy. The slight wind whispering through the ruins warned her of danger, secrets, and treachery as she drew closer. Despite her racing heart, she persisted in her quest to learn the truth. With his golden eyes narrowed, Aiden followed, hidden in the shadows. He had had enough of Iris's enigmatic disappearances and her avoidance of his inquiries. Even if it meant s

The Price of TruthThe packhouse was oppressively tense. Like a predator in a cage, Damon stalked the room, his piercing eyes fixed on Iris. The burden of his charges pressed down on her as she stood in the middle. Members of the pack hovered in the shadows around them, their interest and uneasiness evident. Though his posture was rigid and his customary confidence had been replaced by uncertainty, Aiden was by her side.At last, Damon halted, his voice a sharp growl. He growled, "Do you think I'm a fool, Iris?" Sneaking away in the middle of the night to see Lucian? Behind our backs, what falsehoods are you telling us?Even though Iris's heart was racing, she didn't back down. Despite the fury burning in Damon's eyes, she stated in a firm voice, "I'm not weaving lies." Lucian offered a truce, so I went to see him. Instead of starting a war, I was attempting to prevent one.Damon snorted, letting out a sour chuckle. "A truce? Do you believe that I am unaware of Lucian's identity? You

Allies and EnemiesThe packhouse was shrouded in darkness, and the only sound in the stillness of the night was the distant howl.Iris paced her room, her mind racing with fear and resolve. She could still clearly recall every element of the blood moon vision. She whirled around, gasping for air as the door cracked open.Lucian entered, moving quickly and silently. His eyes blazed with urgency, and his dark cloak melted into the darkness.“Lucian?” she said in a whisper, looking at the door. "Are you crazy? If somebody happens to spot you here. His voice was stern and low as he said, "I didn't come here lightly." "Damon's wolves are getting ready for battle." They have located our camp and intend to destroy it before daybreak.Iris's blood grew cold as she froze. "How are you aware?"“They were seen by scouts,” Lucian said. We are outmatched and outnumbered. It will be a massacre without assistance. The door slammed open before Iris could react. With his golden eyes flaming with rage,

Trust on the EdgeHours before, the insurgents' camp was a gloomy ghost of its former glory. The air was thick with smoke from homemade fires, blending with the metallic smell of blood. Wolves' eyes were empty with the weight of loss, and they moaned in agony as they tended to their wounds. With their faces drawn and exhausted, Iris, Aiden, and Lucian stood next to the remains of a fallen tent."This isn't sustainable," Lucian remarked in an irritated tone. "We have half of our fighters dead and the other half just barely surviving." If Damon's wolves return, we will be crushed. The brand was hotter than ever when Iris raised a quivering hand to her wrist. She felt a restless, quite lifelike pulse of energy within herself. She turned to see a young insurgent lying splayed against a tree, his respiration labored and weak. Then she walked near him without thinking."What are you doing?" Aiden moved closer and asked."Aiding," Iris answered quietly. She knelt to the wounded wolf and cov

He returned his attention to Iris, who was motionless with a pale face. Iris, be honest with him. Inform him of the agreement. With her heart thumping in her chest, Iris swallowed forcefully. Nevertheless, here I am. Iris, you called me without even recognizing it. He cocked his head, his composed assurance in his stance irritating her nerves. "Or, perhaps more accurately, your mark did."She fired back, crossing her arms as if to protect herself, "This isn't about the mark." Caleb, you're tampering with something precious. I don't want to be involved in this. The sound of his quiet laughter was both frightening and angry. "Oh, Iris. You behave as if we had a choice from the Moon Goddess. Every part of her being screamed against the choice she had to make, yet the Goddess’s voice echoed in her mind, demanding a decision. She turned to Damon, her throat tight with emotion. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.Damon’s jaw clenched, his gaze burning into hers with a mix of hurt and acceptance. “Don’t regret this,” he said, his tone low but sharp. The ground split open, and tendrils of darkness surged upward, wrapping around him.“Iris!” Damon shouted, his voice filled with anger and fear as the shadows pulled him lower.“No!” Iris screamed, running forward, but Aiden grabbed her arm and held her back.“There’s nothing we can do!” Aiden yelled over th

Her comments caused her knees to give way, and her heart was thumping in her chest like a drum.Calm but uncompromising, the voice replied, "You've unlocked the power, but now you must prove your worth." "You can only be followed to the end by one of them."Iris's hands clenched into fists as she shook her head. Her voice broke as she murmured, "Why must I choose?" "Have I done enough?"The voice grew softer without faltering. It is the mark's method. You cannot bear both of their loads, and balance is necessary for the future.Iris looked at Aiden and Damon, who were standing beside her. Their postures were stiff as they gazed at her with shocked and perplexed faces. As though echoing her distress, the luminous vines on her arm pulsed softly."What's going on?" With a worried tone, Aiden inquired.Iris, who could hardly look them in the eye, remarked, "She's forcin

Its surface glistened as if it held a thousand galaxies whirling in both harmony and turmoil. His instincts told him to keep away, but he hesitated. Self-AcceptanceTurning to Face the Shadow With the thorny walls pressing in like onlookers to a long-awaited war, the clearing in the maze seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Iris stayed immobile, her head whirling and her body tense. Slowly, like a predator chasing its prey, the shadow picture of herself circled about her. With malice in its voice, the shadow hissed, "You think you can save them?" "Even you cannot save yourself." Iris said, her voice strong in spitedespitery tugging at her core, "I'm not here to save myself." Her wrist mark started to glow, light warm, and steady. Something between a grimace and a smile twisted the shadow's face. Falsehoods. You've been afraid all your life. Fearful of reality. Fearful of your strength. Fearful of the person you will become if you accept it. Iris forcefully stated, "I don't have to listen to you." Her chin was up as she stepped forward. "You are only a mirror reflection. His eyes blazed with rage, and his hands clenched into fists. "Something we're lacking must be a means to stop it." Iris sat with her head bent on the edge of a broken bench. In an attempt to remain stable, the brilliant mark on her wrist pulsed a little like a heartbeat. She whispered, "Aiden, you heard her." I'm dying over the mark. It is beyond your power to combat. Aiden's face tensed as he turned around. "What she said doesn't matter to me. A path is always possible. All you need to do is want to locate it. Damon's face was expressionless as he rested against a damaged wall. "Power always comes with a cost," he stated somberly. "Aiden, she is not an exception. You cannot continue to act as though we can resolve this with simple willpower. "You can say that with ease," Aiden retorted, looking at Damon

Power’s CostA Lethal TrapThe walls of the makeshift packhouse twisted and shifted about Aiden and Damon as they stood back-to-back. The space seemed to be alive, thriving on their mistrust and annoyance. With each step, a new trap was set off, whether it was phantom claws snatching at their throats, spikes blasting from the walls, or the floor crashing into emptiness."Time is of the essence!" A shaft of ice sprang from the ceiling, and Aiden snarled as he barely avoided it.Damon kicked a pressure plate that activated a second set of traps and said dryly, "I noticed." Just in time to prevent a collapsing beam, he yanked Aiden back. "You're awful at staying alive if you're always trying to be the hero."Wiping perspiration from his brow, Aiden shot back, "And for someone who's supposed to be all-knowing, you're doing a lousy job of getting us out of here."Damon's keen eyes searched the room for anything that didn't belong. He whispered, "This isn't just a trap." "This is a test."

His typically steady hands shook at his sides. He murmured, "You think I wanted this?" "What you wanted doesn't matter to me," Aiden screamed. "You tricked us. You fooled her. "Enough!" Iris cut in, her voice calm yet tremulous. She moved in front of them, staring at Damon. "What do you conceal? Telling us the truth is vital if you wish to be rescued. She appeared to be standing in the packhouse, but something wasn't quite right. The air seemed heavy, pressing against her chest, and the walls shined oddly, as though they were made of polished glass. Aiden and Damon stood across the room, their postures rigid. Their normally recognizable looks were aloof, and it was unclear what they were feeling. Iris shouted out in a tremulous voice, "Aiden." "Damon. What is going on? Aiden's angry and piercing eyes suddenly shifted to her. "You brought us here." "What?" Iris stepped back, her heart pounding. "No, I didn't! I have no idea where "here" is! "Don't you always have an answer?" Damon crossed his arms and spoke in a chilly tone. "You're at the center of everything that goes wrong." "That is unfair!" Iris objected.
