The Price of Truth

The packhouse was oppressively tense. Like a predator in a cage, Damon stalked the room, his piercing eyes fixed on Iris. The burden of his charges pressed down on her as she stood in the middle. Members of the pack hovered in the shadows around them, their interest and uneasiness evident. Though his posture was rigid and his customary confidence had been replaced by uncertainty, Aiden was by her side.

At last, Damon halted, his voice a sharp growl. He growled, "Do you think I'm a fool, Iris?" Sneaking away in the middle of the night to see Lucian? Behind our backs, what falsehoods are you telling us?

Even though Iris's heart was racing, she didn't back down. Despite the fury burning in Damon's eyes, she stated in a firm voice, "I'm not weaving lies." Lucian offered a truce, so I went to see him. Instead of starting a war, I was attempting to prevent one.

Damon snorted, letting out a sour chuckle. "A truce? Do you believe that I am unaware of Lucian's identity? You

She could still clearly recall every element of the blood moon vision. She whirled around, gasping for air as the door cracked open.Lucian entered, moving quickly and silently. His eyes blazed with urgency, and his dark cloak melted into the darkness.“Lucian?” she said in a whisper, looking at the door. "Are you crazy? Trust on the EdgeHours before, the insurgents' camp was a gloomy ghost of its former glory. The air was thick with smoke from homemade fires, blending with the metallic smell of blood. Wolves' eyes were empty with the weight of loss, and they moaned in agony as they tended to their wounds. With their faces drawn and exhausted, Iris, Aiden, and Lucian stood next to the remains of a fallen tent."This isn't sustainable," Lucian remarked in an irritated tone. "We have half of our fighters dead and the other half just barely surviving." If Damon's wolves return, we will be crushed. The brand was hotter than ever when Iris raised a quivering hand to her wrist. She felt a restless, quite lifelike pulse of energy within herself. She turned to see a young insurgent lying splayed against a tree, his respiration labored and weak. Then she walked near him without thinking."What are you doing?" Aiden moved closer and asked."Aiding," Iris answered quietly. She knelt to the wounded wolf and cov

Ghosts of the PastThe tension in the packhouse was intense. As the truth of Iris's background hung over the party, whispers began to spread like wildfire. Wolves looked at one other uneasily, their allegiance to Damon faltering in the face of the disclosures. With his glittering eyes staring at Iris with a possessiveness that made Aiden's blood boil, Caleb stood tall in the middle of it all.Aiden snarled, his voice as keen as a sword, "You're lying." With his golden eyes flaming with rage, he took a protective step in front of Iris. All Caleb could do was smirk, the kind of grin that portends calamity. "Am I? Ask her for yourself, dog. He returned his attention to Iris, who was motionless with a pale face. Iris, be honest with him. Inform him of the agreement. With her heart thumping in her chest, Iris swallowed forcefully. "When my pack fell, the pact was dissolved," she said in a steady although hushed voice. "Nothing remains to be honored."With an almost pleased grin, Caleb cock

Love and BetrayalAt night, the blackness of the forest pressed down like a living thing, making it seem heavier. As Caleb's presence filled the room, Iris stood close to the edge of the clearing, feeling her pulse speed. In the moonlight, his glittering eyes shone like liquid mercury as his towering body rose out of the darkness.Iris's tone was harsher than she meant when she said, "You shouldn't be here."With a sly smile, Caleb came closer to them. Nevertheless, here I am. Iris, you called me without even recognizing it. He cocked his head, his composed assurance in his stance irritating her nerves. "Or, perhaps more accurately, your mark did."She fired back, crossing her arms as if to protect herself, "This isn't about the mark." Caleb, you're tampering with something precious. I don't want to be involved in this. The sound of his quiet laughter was both frightening and angry. "Oh, Iris. You behave as if we had a choice from the Moon Goddess. Secrets ExposedWith the moonlight cutting through the fissures in the fractured stone, the ruins were shrouded in a spooky calm. Iris squatted close to an antique shrine, sweeping away layers of dust that covered its weathered surface, her breath hazy in the chilly air. A warning from the past, written in the Moon Goddess's lost language, shimmered slightly on the brittle text in front of her.Untold power is borne by the mark of the selected. If you corrupt the heart, it will lead to disaster. Either make a sensible choice or darkness will rule. The imprint on Iris's wrist flared like fire as she traced the phrases with quivering fingertips, her pulse thumping. It rang in her head: Chosen.Selected to save them? Or to ruin everything? Her throat constricted. What if she was the reason for the crimson moon's prophesy, and Caleb's insistence was correct? But what if she was the cause of the collapse?"What are you doing here, Iris?"She was surprised by the harsh, accusatory voice. Sh

A Line in the Sand The moon shone in eerie rays through the trees as Iris sat on the edge of the clearing. The scar from her last encounter with Caleb was still slightly pulsing on her wrist, and the memory of his words weighed heavily on her. Her heart was a whirlpool of uncertainty and rage as she balled her hands. Could he be correct? What if the prophecy was meant to kill the pack rather than save it? Her whirling thoughts were interrupted by Aiden's words. "Iris." He spoke in a quiet voice, but with a firmness that demanded attention. She turned to see him standing a few steps away, his face displaying a combination of annoyance and worry. "What took place back there? Alongside Caleb? She was momentarily unable to look him in the eye. The truth seemed like a knife ready to sever whatever tenuous connection still existed between them. However, Aiden's gaze remained fixed, and she understood that he would not allow her to divert this time. She eventually acknowledged, "He.

The moment has come to terminate this uprising.Caleb commanded the room with his strong voice as he walked forward. "The order we've fought so hard to establish is undermined by these rebels. Her mark erupting with unmanageable strength and her powers becoming the subject of ghost tales exchanged amongst terrified voices were still vivid memories of the previous day. Both Damon and Caleb exuded a sense of chilly power and control as they stood at the head of the long oak table. Damon's sharp eyes traveled around the room before settling on Iris.Damon remarked, "You've seen what she is capable of," in a crisp and razor-sharp voice. "This... unbridled power endangers the entire pack." A leader who lacks self-control is unable to guide her followers."You're not correct!" Sacrifice and StrengthDawn was just peeking over the horizon, and the sky was bleeding faint orange and gray. The air smelled like approaching war, and it was chilly and biting. Iris was sitting near the edge of the meadow with her arms firmly encircling her body when Aiden discovered her. Her face was pallid in the low light, and her normally piercing stare seemed far away."Iris," Aiden whispered quietly as he walked carefully toward her. "You're not feeling well."She winced a little but kept her head down. "Aiden, I have no other option." Whatever storm was raging inside her was rough and raspy in her voice. "The mark is requesting something, but I'm not sure what it is."With his hands softly taking hers, he knelt before her. "You're not alone in this. We confront it together, no matter what it is or requires.Something briefly glowed in her eyes—hope, maybe. But when she freed one hand and rubbed it against her bright mark, it disappeared. Invasion and DesperationAs the night wore on, the packhouse was painted a menacing red by the blood moon's dim glow. Because of the prior skirmish, there was a lot of anxiety in the air. Aiden was standing close to the glass, watching the tree line for any activity. Allies and EnemiesAs Iris stood at the edge of the clearing, the forest was eerily quiet, with only the gentle rustle of leaves to be heard. The mark on her wrist was no longer glowing, but the warning still weighed heavily on her chest. The faint sound of footfall caused her body to tense automatically as she turned."Who’s there?" asked Iris.A figure with purposeful, non-threatening gestures stepped out of the shadows. A lean, strong rogue wolf with dark, cunning eyes. His face was faintly scarred from innumerable battles, and his clothes were ripped."I didn't come to fight," said Rogue Wolf. With her heart racing, Iris's palm lingered close to the dagger fastened to her belt. She remained vigilant.Iris replied: "Then why are you here?"Calmly, Rogue Wolf: "The mark."The word lingered in the air like the edge of a blade. Forewarning and UrgencyAs Iris gripped Aiden's arm, the room was lighted by the dim glow of the mark on her wrist, creating shifting shadows. Her eyes were full of desperation, but her breathing was steady.Whispering, Iris says, "I saw it, Aiden."With a puzzled brow, Aiden leaned closer and asked, "What did you see? What do we face?Iris, in a shaky voice: "The external group. Blood. War. Now, it's about everyone, not just us. The mark is a lighthouse. They are pursuing it. For me.Her remarks sank like a stone into deep water into the dense atmosphere, and the room fell silent. As Aiden took in the enormity of her news, his jaw tightened."Then we'll stop them," said Aiden in a quiet voice. We'll protect you no matter what."Iris: "It's not just about me," she said, shaking her head. They will destroy the pack, the land, and the balance if they reach the target. We can't manage it all by ourselves."The sound of footsteps broke the tense silence. Caleb emerged from the doorway, hi

The goal is to survive. Aiden, look around. Damon's men are afraid and lack a leader, and they won't wait for us to resolve this."With a growl, Aiden says, "Iris is our leader."(sharply) Caleb: "Iris is not conscious.
