"Don't touch that!" Sarah snapped impatiently when Lorenzo lifted a pair of cutters that had cost the earth to import.

"You design jewelry," Lorenzo whispered in astonishment, his eyes lifting to meet hers and Sarah’s own gaze fluttered away.

"Yeah, I do," she ventured nervously, waving at the large portfolio Lorenzo had lifted from one of her other workstations.

Sarah had the drawing board for designing, a work table for actually making the jewelry, a small cutting table for cutting wire and shaping semi-precious stones, and her desk, which housed her laptop, for paperwork and correspondence.

Lorenzo continued to flip through her portfolio with an absorbed frown, occasionally lingering on a page before moving on. Sarah stood in front of him, fidgeting, waiting for the scathing put down that would undoubtedly follow. Lorenzo suddenly turned the open book toward her.

"This is your cousin's engagement set," he observed, tapping at the picture of the diamond and white gold earri

"Fine." Sarah tilted her head as she ran a contemptuous look over her husband. "How do I take my coffee?" Lorenzo frowned at the question before shrugging. "Black," Lorenzo stated with the utmost authority. "No, you take yours black, I don't drink coffee." "This is pointless," the alpha dismissed. "And juvenile." "Everything about me, or to do with me, is pointless to you," Sarah observed bitterly with a sigh. "That's hardly-" Lorenzo began, but Sarah interrupted him again, barely able to credit his own daring. Sarah had never once stood up to him this way, she was done being a doormat. Just because she was temporarily trapped in this marriage did not mean that she would allow Lorenzo to walk all over her anymore. "Everything except my womb of course." Sarah laughed half-hysterically. "You have a lot of use for that! That's all I am to you, a womb on legs!" "You're being ridiculous," Lorenzo derided. "What about my birthday?" Sarah asked suddenly, still ignoring him

She could tell that Lorenzo was recalling the events of that night too, his eyes closed once and he gulped visibly letting out a ragged breath and then his eyes dropped to where Sarah’s hands were still restlessly fidgeting with the pencil that had fallen into her lap. He dropped one huge hand over Sarah’s to stop the movement. "I resented you very much," he admitted almost desperately. "Because I felt trapped." "Wrong tense, Lorenzo," Sarah whispered. "Your resentment is still very current." "Things change, Tesoro", he pleaded desperately. "Some things are inexcusable, Lorenzo Matteo," she whispered painfully. "And unforgivable." "We're not getting anywhere with this," Lorenzo groaned in frustration, and Sarah dragged her hands out from under Lorenzo’s. "That's what I've been telling you for the last three days," Sarah pointed out and he bit off a curse before getting up abruptly. Sarah jumped up too to avoid being intimidated by Lorenzo’s height. But she had miscalculat

Sarah licked her lips nervously as Lorenzo’s scrutiny dropped to her mouth, and his pupils dilated until his eyes were virtually black, a very thin ring of blue-gray remaining. Sarah’s breath was starting to come in little gasps as she tried to control her own need to move against Lorenzo. Lorenzo’s hips gave the slightest twitch, and Sarah felt herself spasm around her husband. Lorenzo hissed at the movement, his face clenching as he withdrew slightly, only to plunge back into Sarah’s inner chamber welcoming the heat as if he couldn't bear to leave. That was all it took for Sarah’s head to fall back limply and her mouth to open on a soundless scream of ecstasy. The record speed of her orgasm seemed to take Lorenzo by surprise, as well as trigger his own. With a shocked sound and another half thrust, he buried himself as deep as he could go, arching backward in the process and coming inside her violently. It seemed to last forever, but eventually his entire body went limp and he

Lorenzo and Sarah barely spoke over the next week or so, merely coexisting in the same house. Lorenzo insisted that they still have breakfast and dinner together and that they sleep in the same bed, but he never touched Sarah, maintaining the distance that Sarah had insisted on. Some part of Sarah was relieved while another bemoaned the loss of the one bond they had shared. She kept telling herself that it was just sex and it had never meant anything. Besides, Sarah had other, more immediate, concerns. Like the fact that she had thrown up every day for the last week and she was still stricken by dizzy spells at the most unexpected times and that her period was now later than it had ever been before. Sarah was relieved that the intimacies between her and Lorenzo had ceased, because Lorenzo was as familiar with Omega's cycle as she was and Sarah would really prefer absolute certainty before telling Lorenzo anything. She also wanted time to figure out what her next move would be.

Lorenzo was home promptly at six. Sarah was curled up on the sofa, flipping through a coffee table book by an extremely popular photographer, which she had just purchased on her afternoon excursion. He was a wildlife photographer, but her subject matter this time around was a lot closer to home. His latest anthology, entitled Man's Best Friend, was all about dogs. Sarah, being a huge sucker for dogs, hadn't thought twice before buying the book. Lorenzo paused in the doorway, and Sarah looked up to see Lorenzo’s arrested eyes on her hair. Lorenzo lifted a self-conscious hand to Sarah’s newly cut hair, knowing that it was a big change. Sarah had had her waist-length fall of strawberry blond hair cut to just below her jaw. The style was straight and sleek, with a feathery fringe, and Sarah loved the way it made her look and feel like a whole new person. Something she was so desperately striving to be. Sarah’s hair had always been long; her father had absolutely forbidden her t

Now Sarah strove to sound flippant about the dog, but the tremor in her voice made a liar out of her. Lorenzo said nothing but he seemed to be struggling with something, his jaw so tightly clenched that Sarah could see the little muscles knotting just below his ears, and his knuckles showed white where his grip had tightened on the book. "What did he do to the dog?" Lorenzo gritted out, sounding like he was chewing nails. "I never knew for sure," Sarah confessed. "Mom said Bamie went to a new family and was happy with them. But I don't know...I always feared that she took him back to the pound." Despite Sarah’s best intentions, tears of long-remembered pain flooded her eyes, and she tilted her chin in an effort to appear casual. "I couldn't sleep for the longest time afterward, imagining how confused Bamie must have been, and on the really bad nights I pictured them taking him into the vet's operating room to be put down, because even though I loved him, he really wasn't c

"Stop staring," Lorenzo groaned, keeping his eyes glued to the road ahead. "You're making me nervous." Yeah right! Mr. Nerves of Steel, who handled the powerful Ferrari with grace and confidence, was nervous. Sarah didn't believe that for a second. She pursed her lips and diverted her eyes to the rapidly darkening horizon beyond her window. They had been driving for nearly forty minutes, and Sarah had no clue where they were or where they were going. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes for a few moments, feeling like the past few weeks of uncertainty were catching up with her. "We're here." Lorenzo’s voice jerked her out of her doze sometime later, and she stretched before sitting up to take stock of their surroundings. The car was already parked in the driveway of a huge house. The place made their, not immodest, house seem like a garden cottage. There were five other sleek and expensive sports cars parked in the driveway, and every light, both inside and out of the ho

Sarah certainly pulled out all the stops when faced with an obstacle, but this was just despicable and so unbelievably obvious. Lorenzo had given her no warning whatsoever. No wonder he was such a successful businessman; he was a master at manipulating a situation to his advantage, and this was a classic example. Give the omega what she wants and maybe her rebellion will subside and she will get down to the business of being a human incubator. "I'm so happy to meet you, Mr. Giovanni," she said softly, taking the man's proffered hand and disguising her anger behind a sweet smile. "Why, just recently I expressed a wish to meet you!" She refused to look at Lorenzo but she sensed Lorenzo uncomfortably shifting from one foot to the other. "And here we are." "Indeed." The other man smiled even though it was obvious, in the way he glanced at Lorenzo , that he knew something was amiss. "I'm glad you overcame your aversion to football and decided to join us tonight. The guys will be delig

It was three months later and Sarah headed down to the kitchen for breakfast and found her husband already seated at the table, newspaper in hand. He'd already dressed Luciana and had her little baby carrier placed on the table in front of him. Luciana was asleep and Lorenzo was so absorbed in his paper that he didn't notice Sarah at first. It was Ms. Brown day off, so Lorenzo had fixed himself a bowl of cereal, toast, and some coffee. Sarah smiled at the sight of them, her heart overflowing with affection for them both. "Good morning," Sarah greeted cheerfully as she headed over to the breakfast nook. Sarah dropped a kiss on the baby's cheek and then, after the briefest of hesitations, one on her husband's lean cheek. While Sarah was a lot more affectionate these days, Sarah still felt a certain reserve around Lorenzo, not sure if she could touch and kiss her husband as freely as he did to her. Sarah knew she was being silly, but she seemed unable to overcome her emotional ba

Lorenzo smiled bittersweetly. "I know you don't believe me yet," he whispered. "But I'll make it my life's work to convince you." Lorenzo bent his head and kissed Sarah gently, his lips moist, gentle, and sweet on Sarah’s. Lorenzo raised his head much too quickly, and Sarah went up on her toes to prolong the contact. "Enzo..." Sarah didn't know what to say, but Lorenzo shook his head and smiled gently. "It's okay. I just wanted you to know." Lorenzo kissed her again, a little bit more urgently this time. Sarah’s dormant hormones sprang to life in an instant, and she pushed closer to Lorenzo, deliberately rubbing herself against Lorenzo’s hardening cock. Lorenzo deepened the kiss, his tongue plunging into Sarah’s mouth in clumsy desperation, and her lack of finesse made Lorenzo even hungrier for her. "The doctor gave me the all-clear for sex last week," Sarah reminded Lorenzo, and he groaned at Sarah’s urgent words. "I didn't tell you how I felt because I was trying to

The thin sound of a distressed infant's wail jerked Sarah from a restless sleep. She sat up and fought her way out of bed before groggily trudging to the nursery. When she got there she blinked up at the already-present Lorenzo who was cradling their crying daughter tenderly in his strong arms. He was wearing only a pair of boxers and held the tiny baby up against his strong, naked chest. He was crooning gently to her and Sarah was transfixed by the sweet picture they presented. Lorenzo looked up and saw Sarah standing in the doorway. Lorenzo’s hair was messy and standing up in spikes. "Hey." Lorenzo smiled over at her. "I was hoping you'd sleep through this. You looked exhausted earlier. I don't think she's hungry. Just cranky. I think her wet nappy woke her up. I changed her and she's all dry and comfy now, but she hasn't worked the bad mood out of her system yet." Sarah walked over to them and peered over one bulging bicep into Luciana’s scrunched-up little face and smil

"I think it's time you left, Father," Sarah said voice rigid with pain, and her father sneered one last time before he pivoted on his heel and strode from the room. "Don't you dare believe what he just said, cara," Lorenzo whispered rawly, focusing his desperate glare on her. "Don't you dare!" "I know that you love her, Lorenzo," Sarah whispered. Lorenzo wasn't sure if she meant the baby or Martina, and Sarah could tell by the look of uncertainty on Lorenzo’s face that he wasn't sure either and so he was at a loss as to how to respond. "Would you try to take her from me?" "NO!" Lorenzo practically screamed, and the baby startled. Sarah soothed her with slight rocking motions until she started suckling again. Lorenzo reined in his temper and gentled his voice with visible effort. "I wouldn't do that to you. Cara I'd never hurt you like that." Lorenzo looked stupefied and hurt at the question. "But you want her..." Again the ambiguity and Lorenzo’s frown deepened. "If y

Sarah awoke to the sound of angry, hushed voices and blinked groggily as she tried to get her bearings. "I don't want you anywhere near her." Sarah heard Lorenzo hiss furiously and tried to concentrate on the drama unfolding in her doorway where she could see two large men silhouetted. One was unmistakably Lorenzo, and the other...she narrowed her eyes slightly, trying to focus a bit better. It looked like her father. "She's my daughter and I'll damned well see her when I want to," the other man blustered, confirming that he was, indeed, John Malik. "So that you can damage her more than you already have?" Lorenzo asked, almost shaking with rage. "I won't let you get close enough to hurt her like that again. And you can forget about getting that heir you want anytime soon. I refuse to give you that pleasure." "Well, then stay married to her until you do, or give up the vineyard," her father sneered. "The vineyard never meant as much to me as it did my father. You can ha

  • THE LOVE I DIDN’T CHOOSE   CHAPTER 064 - WELCOMING A NEW LIFE

Sarah’s water broke four hours later, and Sarah was moved to the delivery room. Sarah and Lorenzo hadn't exchanged any further meaningful conversation, he'd just continued to soothe Sarah and coach her through the ever-increasing pain. Sarah didn't ever say it but she was pretty grateful to have her husband there. Even though Lorenzo was as nervous and edgy as a cat in a barrel between contractions, he was a solid rock during them. Four intensely nerve-wracking, sweaty, and pain-riddled hours later, during which time Lorenzo supported her, swore at her doctors, threatened the nurses, and seemed to come close to breaking down into tears on several occasions, Sarah finally gave one last painful push. There was a rush of activity at the foot of the bed as Sarah felt an overwhelming flood of relief. Lorenzo’s eyes remained glued to her face, bright and feverish above the surgical mask they had forced him to wear. He dragged down the mask and leaned down toward Sarah, until his mou

Lorenzo voice deepened and his face softened at the admission. His eyes were gentle as he registered the confusion on Sarah’s face. Was he saying he loved her? And if he was... did Sarah believe him? Sarah wasn't sure of the answer to either question, and a second later she didn't really care when she suddenly doubled over in pain. Lorenzo, Elisa, and Luke all surged forward in concern, but her husband got to her first. He had an arm around Sarah’s waist before Sarah could blink. "What's wrong?" he demanded hoarsely. Sarah grabbed his free hand in both of hers and squeezed it urgently as her entire body quivered in excruciating pain. After an eternal moment, the pain lessened and faded and she pushed her way upright, meeting Lorenzo’s frantic gaze with a panicky one of her own. "It's the baby," Sarah whispered in fear. "I think the baby's coming." "No, no, no." The naked panic and fear in Lorenzo’s eyes did nothing to alleviate Sarah’s own terror. "He can't be coming now

After arriving at Luke and Elisa’s home, Sarah decided to give the couple, who were walking on eggshells around her and trying to comfort her, a break from her presence by taking a nap. Sarah was just slipping into a troubled doze when she heard the unmistakable voice of her husband coming from a distance. She frowned and sat upright, pushing her tangled hair out of her face. Sarah tilted her head, not sure if her imagination was playing tricks on her, until she heard it again. It was Lorenzo, without a doubt, and he sounded desperate and agitated. Sarah got out of bed with some difficulty before waddling to the door on bare feet and opening it slightly. This time she could clearly make out Lorenzo’s voice. "I had nothing to do with that story," Lorenzo was protesting. "And I'll be damned if you keep me away from my family like this." "Sarah doesn't want to see you," Luke stated firmly, and there was a moment's charged silence. "Maybe not," Lorenzo conceded quietly. "Bu

  • THE LOVE I DIDN’T CHOOSE   CHAPTER 061 - LIES IN THE HEADLINES

Lorenzo had made good on his promise and had enlisted both Elisa and Ms. Brown aid in ensuring that Sarah took her vitamins and rested enough but that was the only promise he kept. A month passed with barely any word from Lorenzo, and his phone calls, the few that came, were rushed and impersonal and barely lasted three minutes. When Sarah tried to contact him, he was never available, or so the cold female voices on the other end of the line told her. Sarah had no choice but to take them at their word. Sarah kept track of Lorenzo’s movements through the news-online, televised, and printed. His father's death and Lorenzo subsequent taking over of the family's banking and investment empire were pretty hot news items and hardly a day went by that it wasn't mentioned in some form of news. There had been paparazzi coverage of the funeral; despite the media ban the family had put on proceedings, some intrepid photographer had managed to get a picture of Lorenzo standing over his fathe
