The house was dark and quiet when Sarah got home, with no seething Lorenzo waiting at the front door this time, just echoing silence as she made her way upstairs and back into the spare bedroom.

After a hot shower, Sarah collapsed into bed and didn't stir until the following morning, when she woke to bright sunlight. She sat up in confusion as she tried to get her bearings and saw that she wasn't in the spare bedroom anymore.

She was back in the master suite and a glance down at the empty space next to her confirmed that Lorenzo had indeed slept beside her.

Sarah peeked down at herself and was relieved to note that she still had on the T-shirt she had worn to bed.

She checked the clock and groaned when she discovered that she had slept till nearly ten in the morning.

Pushing the tumbled mass of her hair out of her face, Sarah got up and was alarmed when the room started spinning wildly. She stumbled forward before reaching for the headboard of the bed and steadying herself.

"Don't touch that!" Sarah snapped impatiently when Lorenzo lifted a pair of cutters that had cost the earth to import. "You design jewelry," Lorenzo whispered in astonishment, his eyes lifting to meet hers and Sarah’s own gaze fluttered away. "Yeah, I do," she ventured nervously, waving at the large portfolio Lorenzo had lifted from one of her other workstations. Sarah had the drawing board for designing, a work table for actually making the jewelry, a small cutting table for cutting wire and shaping semi-precious stones, and her desk, which housed her laptop, for paperwork and correspondence. Lorenzo continued to flip through her portfolio with an absorbed frown, occasionally lingering on a page before moving on. Sarah stood in front of him, fidgeting, waiting for the scathing put down that would undoubtedly follow. Lorenzo suddenly turned the open book toward her. "This is your cousin's engagement set," he observed, tapping at the picture of the diamond and white gold earri

"Fine." Sarah tilted her head as she ran a contemptuous look over her husband. "How do I take my coffee?" Lorenzo frowned at the question before shrugging. "Black," Lorenzo stated with the utmost authority. "No, you take yours black, I don't drink coffee." "This is pointless," the alpha dismissed. "And juvenile." "Everything about me, or to do with me, is pointless to you," Sarah observed bitterly with a sigh. "That's hardly-" Lorenzo began, but Sarah interrupted him again, barely able to credit his own daring. Sarah had never once stood up to him this way, she was done being a doormat. Just because she was temporarily trapped in this marriage did not mean that she would allow Lorenzo to walk all over her anymore. "Everything except my womb of course." Sarah laughed half-hysterically. "You have a lot of use for that! That's all I am to you, a womb on legs!" "You're being ridiculous," Lorenzo derided. "What about my birthday?" Sarah asked suddenly, still ignoring hi

She could tell that Lorenzo was recalling the events of that night too, his eyes closed once and he gulped visibly letting out a ragged breath and then his eyes dropped to where Sarah’s hands were still restlessly fidgeting with the pencil that had fallen into her lap. He dropped one huge hand over Sarah’s to stop the movement. "I resented you very much," he admitted almost desperately. "Because I felt trapped." "Wrong tense, Lorenzo," Sarah whispered. "Your resentment is still very current." "Things change, Tesoro", he pleaded desperately. "Some things are inexcusable, Lorenzo Matteo," she whispered painfully. "And unforgivable." "We're not getting anywhere with this," Lorenzo groaned in frustration, and Sarah dragged her hands out from under Lorenzo’s. "That's what I've been telling you for the last three days," Sarah pointed out and he bit off a curse before getting up abruptly. Sarah jumped up too to avoid being intimidated by Lorenzo’s height. But she had miscalcula

Sarah licked her lips nervously as Lorenzo’s scrutiny dropped to her mouth, and his pupils dilated until his eyes were virtually black, a very thin ring of blue-gray remaining. Sarah’s breath was starting to come in little gasps as she tried to control her own need to move against Lorenzo. Lorenzo’s hips gave the slightest twitch, and Sarah felt herself spasm around her husband. Lorenzo hissed at the movement, his face clenching as he withdrew slightly, only to plunge back into Sarah’s inner chamber welcoming the heat as if he couldn't bear to leave. That was all it took for Sarah’s head to fall back limply and her mouth to open on a soundless scream of ecstasy. The record speed of her orgasm seemed to take Lorenzo by surprise, as well as trigger his own. With a shocked sound and another half thrust, he buried himself as deep as he could go, arching backward in the process and coming inside her violently. It seemed to last forever, but eventually his entire body went limp and he h

Lorenzo and Sarah barely spoke over the next week or so, merely coexisting in the same house. Lorenzo insisted that they still have breakfast and dinner together and that they sleep in the same bed, but he never touched Sarah, maintaining the distance that Sarah had insisted on. Some part of Sarah was relieved while another bemoaned the loss of the one bond they had shared. She kept telling herself that it was just sex and it had never meant anything. Besides, Sarah had other, more immediate, concerns. Like the fact that she had thrown up every day for the last week and she was still stricken by dizzy spells at the most unexpected times and that her period was now later than it had ever been before. Sarah was relieved that the intimacies between her and Lorenzo had ceased, because Lorenzo was as familiar with Omega's cycle as she was and Sarah would really prefer absolute certainty before telling Lorenzo anything. She also wanted time to figure out what her next move would be.

Lorenzo was home promptly at six. Sarah was curled up on the sofa, flipping through a coffee table book by an extremely popular photographer, which she had just purchased on her afternoon excursion. He was a wildlife photographer, but her subject matter this time around was a lot closer to home. His latest anthology, entitled Man's Best Friend, was all about dogs. Sarah, being a huge sucker for dogs, hadn't thought twice before buying the book. Lorenzo paused in the doorway, and Sarah looked up to see Lorenzo’s arrested eyes on her hair. Lorenzo lifted a self-conscious hand to Sarah’s newly cut hair, knowing that it was a big change. Sarah had had her waist-length fall of strawberry blond hair cut to just below her jaw. The style was straight and sleek, with a feathery fringe, and Sarah loved the way it made her look and feel like a whole new person. Something she was so desperately striving to be. Sarah’s hair had always been long; her father had absolutely forbidden her to

Now Sarah strove to sound flippant about the dog, but the tremor in her voice made a liar out of her. Lorenzo said nothing but he seemed to be struggling with something, his jaw so tightly clenched that Sarah could see the little muscles knotting just below his ears, and his knuckles showed white where his grip had tightened on the book. "What did he do to the dog?" Lorenzo gritted out, sounding like he was chewing nails. "I never knew for sure," Sarah confessed. "Mom said Bamie went to a new family and was happy with them. But I don't know...I always feared that she took him back to the pound." Despite Sarah’s best intentions, tears of long-remembered pain flooded her eyes, and she tilted her chin in an effort to appear casual. "I couldn't sleep for the longest time afterward, imagining how confused Bamie must have been, and on the really bad nights I pictured them taking him into the vet's operating room to be put down, because even though I loved him, he really wasn't c

They had been driving for nearly forty minutes, and Sarah had no clue where they were or where they were going. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes for a few moments, feeling like the past few weeks of uncertainty were catching up with her. "We're here."
