Katherine was now acclimated into her new job and surrounding. She decided to keep the Café, but she added a small bakery that would supply her and the community with delectable treats. It also served as a means of employment for neighborhood folks. Three months of success and she felt good about the changes she made. But she still felt like something was missing. One evening after work, she called Taryn, who was now running the bakery she left back in Wisconsin.
"Hey, how was today?" Katherine questioned.Taryn chuckled before answering."It's the same as yesterday and the day before, and the day before that.""So all is well?" Katherine asked."Yes, Kat, all is well.""Okay good.""Kat, is something bothering you?," Taryn asked, as if she sensed the tension through the phone."I ju..., I just," before Katherine could finish the sentence, she burst out in tears."Oh no, Kat, what's wrong? Are the kids okay?""They are fine," she sobbed. " I just feel overwhelmed with everything, you know. They are getting older, and I feel like they are going to resent me or something because they don't have a father. I don't want my children to hate me. I wish Nile was here because if he were, I wouldn't be feeling this way.""I understand, but you need to breathe, relax and let's dissect this situation.""Alright," she sobbed again."Do you want to be happy and in love again?""Of course I do, but my soul mate is gone. I lost my one true love and no other man can live up to him," Katherine declared."Okay, so you push men away because they don't meet the expectations that you look for?" Taryn asked."I don't push men away, do I?""You do, actually.""But why should I settle, though?""It's not settling, but you need to know that the men you meet will never be Nile.""I know that, but I would rather be sad and lonely rater than settle for a man who doesn't check half the boxes on my checklist," she confessed."There you go again with the silly checklist of yours.""It's not silly, it's resourceful.""Okay, let's go over it again.""So, number one, he has to be ambitious. He must be family orientated and get along great with children, kindness, and loyalty is a must.""Alright, keep going," Taryn urged."He should own a home or at least lives on his own. He must be easy on the eyes and no tattoos," Katherine kept going. "He should be romantic and spontaneous, he should be manly, but have a sensitive side too. Also, he must have brown eyes and not bald or have a receding hairline. I like a little hair on the head.""Okay Katherine, I think that's enough," laughed Taryn"What's so funny? I'm not even close to being done. Did I mention kind?" She continued. "He must be involved in some sort of charity work, you know, giving back to others, also he has to have faith in a higher being, and he must believe in prayer.""Alright, I guess we will have to make that man for you because no one is that perfect," Taryn stated."Taryn, I'm not looking for perfection, I'm just hoping a decent man is still out there.""When I find one, I will let you know bestie."They both sighed, knowing that they were in the same position when it came to their love lives. Taryn was dating around, but nothing serious.Nola was passing her mother's room, when she heard her crying. She didn't like to see her mom sad, so she just stood at the door and listened for a while. She realized she was on the phone with whom she assumed to be aunt Taryn. Her mother was upset about being alone and being a bad mom to them, and Nola didn't want her mother to think that way. She heard her mother mention something about a list of qualities she looked for in a guy. As she was about to knock on her mother's door, an idea came to her. She quickly got her notepad and colour pencil and began jotting down the qualities her mother was listing. When she was finished, she ran to Nathan's room with notepad in hand and her idea in her head. She knocked once and before Nathan could answer, she burst through the door."What the heck, Nola," Nathan shouted, surprised. "I didn't say you could come in.""Relax, grumpy pants. This is important," Nola stated."What is it?""I heard mom crying again.""Oh," Nathan's voice was sad."Cheer up, Nate. I think I know how to make mom happy again," Nola squealed. Her little button nose wiggled out of excitement and her chubby cheeks got a rosy pink tint that made her look like a cupcake doll."I'm listening." Nate placed his tablet on the bed and gave his sister his full attention. Nola handed him her list. "What is this?" He asked as he snatched the notepad from Nola's hands. He read it. "How is this supposed to make mom happy?""Because we're gonna find mom a new husband, silly," Nola giggled. "I overheard mom on the phone with aunty Taryn.""Ooh, someone's in trouble. You know, we are not allowed to listen in on adult conversations.""I didn't mean to," Nola whined. "And besides, I heard mom telling aunt about the stuff she looks for in a husband.""And?""Don't you see, silly pants," she shook her brother by the shoulders. "We can find this perfect man for mom."Nate looked over the list one more time, and then it hit him. "Yeah, you're right. Mom is so busy with the new café and also being our mom and cooking us those delicious meals, she doesn't have the time to search for this new husband," he explained. "So, because we are good kids, we will find mom a husband, and then she can be happy again.""Yeah," Nola shrieked. She gave her brother a high-five. "Now mom will never have to cry again.""Nola, you're a genius.""I know," she giggled. And Nathan began laughing too, then he saw his sister looking like she was lost in thought."What are you thinking about now?" He asked her."Where do we find this new husband?""I don't know, this was your idea!" Nate rolled his eyes. "This will be hard.""Yes it will. But we must persevere for mom's sake," Nola nodded."Yes, we must persevere," Nate mimicked his sister's words. "Sis, what does persevere mean?""I don't know. I heard mom use it once, and it just sounded right." Nola shook her shoulders. She got up to leave her brother's room. "And Nate, one last thing. Mom cannot find out about this.""Agreed," he answered while he spat in his hand for his sister to shake. She rolled her eyes and left him standing there with his palm outstretched.Aiden was on his way to work. He wanted to reach at least two hours earlier than usual so that he could check the computers in his building to see if anyone was involved in this Ponzi scheme. He sat in the back of his limousine, busy returning emails and text messages while his driver Fabian took him to work. It was 6:05 am and Katherine got up and decided to take a run to clear her mind before starting her busy day, she also thought that it was about time she started taking care of herself more for the sake of her children, and exercise was the way to start. She knew she had to do something to take her mind off of her doomed love life and work and exercise always helped other people, so she figured she’d give it a try too.She had been running for around half an hour, when she reached the park. There was an enormous oak tree where she stopped and decided to do some stretches. Her muscles were already sore because they weren’t used to these vigorous activities. She was halfway throug
The next day, Katherine went to work and was ready to start her day off with an enthusiastic attitude. She hoped and prayed that today would be an excellent day. She felt confident that her business would get a head start in sales. It had made headlines on a local blogging site on the internet. It only had around one hundred followers, but you had to start somewhere. She was checking on her order requests for the day when one of her employees approached her. “Good morning Miss. Riley,” the petite redhead said. “Good morning, Lexie, what's up?” “Well we are short-staffed today since Vicky, Matthew, Clem, Ryan, and Anthony are out with the flu.” “What? You've got to be kidding me.” Katherine said in disbelief. “Not at all. They all tried calling you, but your phone went straight to voicemail,” Lexie stated. “My phone died last midnight and I haven't checked my messages.” “Oh I see. Don't worry, though, we can handle today by ourselves,” Lexie smiled. Katherine was in a p
Katherine arrived at Windsor Corp and parked in the car lot. She took a deep breath before grabbing the orders she redid and exited the vehicle. She hoped that this would change the disgruntled customer’s mind about leaving her a bad review. Her business was new and this could ruin its chances of becoming successful. She uttered a small word of prayer before she entered the building. Upon entering, her eyes lit up at how magnificent the space was. It was one of those modern-looking skyscrapers with at least a hundred floors. The luxurious interior made her feel way out of place with its expensive cashmere smell, but Katherine appreciated the hint of mint sweets circulating in the air. She inhaled appreciatively as she walked further inside the building and was even more astounded at how distinctive and sophisticated the decor and high-end furniture were. She came to an halt when she noticed the employees staring at her. It made her feel awkward. They were all well-dressed and everyt
Katherine was furious when she got back to her café. How could someone be so arrogant and disrespectful? She felt bad when he disrespected her business, but when he spoke about her husband, not knowing her or anything about her life, that was the last straw. She didn't care about his review, she just wanted to get a little revenge for what he said and especially for splashing her with his car. With that attitude, he might as well have been the one who was driving. A slight smile played on her lips as she remembered the joy she felt when she doused him with the cappuccino. He was so enraged and flustered and that was very satisfying for her. She made a mental note that she would call Taryn and tell her about her encounter with the customer from hell. She announced her presence to Lexie, who informed her that her children were in the lounge waiting for her. She went to see what they were up to and found them both sitting on the couch with matching textbooks and pencils in hand.“Hello,
The twins were growing tired. The sun was out and getting warmer as the minutes passed by. “I'm thirsty,” Nate complained as he stopped to catch his breath, resting his hands on his hips as he exhaled. “Just a few more houses and I promise we'll find him,” Nola sighed. She was also sweating and breathing heavily, but her plan was in motion, and she felt that she was close to finding a husband for her mother. Miss Polly was parched, she promised herself that this would be the last time she did anything like this. Her bones just were too old for such strenuous activities anymore, plus the children were being odd when they knocked on doors where a gentleman would answer. She removed the bag pack on her back that she had most of the baked goods in, plus she had some water and juice packed in there for the kids. She plucked a bottled water from the bag. “Here you go, Nathan,” she handed the boy the bottle.“Thanks, Miss Polly.” Nathan finished the bottle in two go, he had to pause to ca
Nola just stood there, staring at the massive building. For some reason, she thought the top reached the clouds. She was standing at the front door long enough for her brother to catch up to her. “You know we're grounded, don't you,” he said, tired. His sister turned to him and saw him bending forward with his hand on his knees and gasping for air. “Well, it will be worth it because mom's new husband is in this house right now.” She spoke while keeping her eyes on the massive doors. This house was even bigger than Grandma Deborah’s. “And how'd you know that?” Nate questioned. He thought his sister was weird sometimes. “I don’t know, Nate. A woman just knows these things sometimes,” Nola let out. “Whatever, let's just get this over with and done,” Nathan rolled his eyes. “There's a problem,”“What is it now?” Nola pointed to the doorbell that was much too high for them to reach. “Amateur,” Nate rolled his eyes as he folded his fist and used his knuckles to knock on the door. Mrs. Lewis went back inside to speak to the children. She saw Miss Polly sitting beside them.“Ah, you must be Miss Polly, the children's chaperone,” Mrs. Lewis shook the lady's hand. “I'm Mrs. Lewis.”“Lovely meeting you, Mrs. Lewis,” she smiled as her eyes roamed around the room. “I hope the twins weren't any trouble.” “Nonsense, they are little angels,” Mrs. Lewis grinned. “Then you really don't know the twins, Mrs. Lewis,” Miss Polly giggled. “It is getting late, and I need to go home and get lunch started soon. Kids, are you ready?”“But the Master haven't bought any of our treats as yet,” Nola complained. Mrs. Lewis gave her the five-dollar note. “I'm sorry, sweetheart, I'm afraid the master doesn't carry much cash on him either so this is all he could find.” Mrs. Lewis made an excuse for Aiden. She was ashamed to tell them what he really said. “OK,” Nola sighed. She accepted the money. “You know what, Mrs. Lewis? It's all good. I understand,” she beamed. She opened her bag
