"I am coming home."
Zelda Liamson received a message from her husband, James Ferguson. Her husband had been away on a work trip for three months, and he was finally coming back.
Zelda was so happy she couldn't hide the happiness and the smile on her face. Her relationship with her husband had been strained because they had gotten married under different circumstances, circumstances that did not involve love. When James left, staying away for so long, for those three whole months, Zelda thought that he was going to ask her for a divorce.
She thought he took those three months away from her to give her space to get used to the idea of getting divorced.
Although this message from her husband didn't specifically mean that he was not going to ask her for a divorce, she thought this was a great thing. If he was going to ask for a divorce, he would have just sent her the divorce papers. She would have dealt with lawyers, but he specifically wrote 'home' in his message.
He was coming home to her. This was a prized offering. He was finally coming back. She couldn't help herself but squeak in excitement.
Today was her birthday, and it was also their fifth wedding anniversary. She wasn't expecting him to be here today. She had organized a small birthday dinner with her close family and friends, but she never expected that James would be here. This was turning out to be the best day of her life.
She immediately went home, making sure to pay extra attention to herself. She took a long bath, and wore a beautiful sexy dress, hoping it would get her husband's attention and keep it. As she was anxiously waiting for her husband to come in, he finally did.
James opened the door, got in, and stood in front of it, watching her. Zelda was struck again by her husband's charisma, how handsome he was, the power he had to suck all the attention in the room and make her feel like Jell-O.
She smiled brightly at him, but her husband only looked at her, didn't even greet her, and went straight into the bathroom.
A few minutes later, Zelda heard the shower running. She had stood up, but now she sat down again. She went towards the bedside table and poured glasses of wine, anxiously waiting for her husband to come back.
When James finally emerged from the bathroom, his face expressionless, he walked straight to the wardrobe, ignoring the glass of wine she had poured for him. Zelda felt her heart sink a little but tried to stay optimistic. She smiled nervously and approached him as he changed into fresh clothes.
"James, I didn’t expect you home today," she said softly, hoping to get a word out of him and build a connection. "I thought you had forgotten it was my birthday…and our anniversary."
James barely acknowledged her or graced her with a response, focusing instead on fastening his shirt. Zelda felt her nerves grow and her confidence deteriorating.
'Why wasn’t he saying anything? Why did it feel like they were strangers instead of husband and wife? Like they hadn't known each other for years?
When he finished getting dressed, he grabbed his phone and began heading toward the door. Panic shot through Zelda. She rushed to block his path, her hand trembling as she placed it on his arm.
"Where are you going? Can’t you stay, just for tonight?" she pleaded, her voice weak and desperate. "Please, James. I need you. I’m your wife."
James finally stopped and looked down at her, his expression cold.
"I have something important to take care of," he said, his tone devoid of any warmth or affection.
Zelda’s heart broke. Tears welled in her eyes as she held onto him more tightly.
"I need your attention, James. I need your love. You’re never here… I thought that today…."
Before she could finish her sentence, James roughly pulled her into his arms and carried her to the bed. Her breath caught in her throat, confused by the sudden shift in him as he threw her on the bed and climbed on top of her.
He kissed her with a hunger that left her confused and her body betraying her instantly as it responded to his kisses and attention. Then James reached for a condom in the bedside drawer. Zelda, caught between her desire and hurt, let herself be taken by him and enjoyed it too.
When it was over, she lay still, staring at the ceiling, confused by both James's reaction and her body's Betrayal when it came to him.
James, meanwhile, got up and as he took off the condom. His face changed immediately and he began inspecting the condom. His face darkened as he noticed it was torn.
"What the hell, Zelda?" he snapped, his voice sharp. "Did you do this?"
Zelda sat up, startled by his accusation. "What? What are you talking about?“ she asked him confused.
James stormed over to the bedside drawer, ripping it open and finding the rest of the condoms. He inspected one after the other and found all of them were damaged. His face twisted in anger as he glared at her.
"You’ve been planning this, haven’t you? Trying to trap me with a baby? Trying to steal my sperm!" he accused, his voice dripping with contempt.
“No, of course not!" she protested, her eyes wide with confusion.
“Then what is this?!“ James shouted throwing the torn condoms towards her on the bed.
Zelda shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"James, I swear I didn’t do it. I would never….."
“Then who did? Who tore these condoms? Do you think it's me? You think I am the one desperate to have a baby with you to do this?“ He asked mockingly.
“No! I know you don't want to have a baby James. But I swear I didn't do this. Maybe….maybe someone…..“ Zelda said trying to defend herself.
“Who? You're the only one who uses this room. You know I hate people in my space. Who did you let in here?“ James asked with displeasure.
“No one. I know this room is prohibited but maybe when…..“ Zelda said, continuing to defend herself.
But James didn’t listen. He grabbed his phone, sent a quick message, and stormed back to the bathroom, leaving her sobbing on the bed.
A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Zelda wiped her tears and opened it, only to find the maid standing there with a glass of water and a packet of pills.
"Mr. Ferguson asked for these," the maid said, handing them over and avoiding eye contact.
Zelda’s heart sank as she realized what they were, birth control pills.
She took them silently, her hands shaking as she returned towards the room.
When James emerged from the bathroom, dressed and ready to leave, he found Zelda standing in front of the door with the glass of water and the birth control pills. The two of them locked eyes in a wordless standoff, their eyes doing the conversation between them.
Zelda backed into a corner and feeling defeated, downed the pills, her throat tight with humiliation.
James smirked, satisfied, and reached for his phone as it rang. Zelda listened as a familiar female voice filled the room, her heart sinking further with each passing second. It sounded a lot like Susan Wenger, James's ex-fiancée, the woman he was in love with.
Zelda’s worst fears were confirmed as James made arrangements with Susan over the phone, promising her he was on his way.
“Don't worry, Just had to get home for a second. I am on my way.“ He said and hung up the phone.
"Are you going to see her?" Zelda whispered, her voice filled with dread.
James didn’t answer. He simply grabbed his coat and walked toward the door.
"If you walk out that door, I’ll divorce you!" Zelda cried out, her voice filled with desperation.
But James didn’t stop. He didn’t even turn around to look at her. He walked out, leaving Zelda alone crying for someone who was no longer there.
Zelda remembered four years ago when she was caught in James's bed…..She would admit that she had always had a little crush on James growing up and had deep feelings for him, but she would have never acted on her emotions, and worse she would never have used trickery to get him to be with her. She wanted James to love her back and reciprocate her feelings. So, the fact that James blamed her for what happened four years ago when they were both caught in bed the day he was supposed to get engaged to his girlfriend, Susan, remained a mystery to her.James was furious and Nobody believed her when she said she had nothing to do with it.Nobody believed her, because she and Susan Wenger, who was James's ex-girlfriend, had a history. When Zelda was six years old, she found out that her parents weren't her biological parents, but that she and Susan had been switched at birth. Each child was taken back to their biological family. That's when Zelda found herself taken into a family full of vio
James pulled Zelda from the taxi towards his car, without saying a word. The minute he put her inside, he noticed that she was not wearing her necklace.“Where is it?” he asked, his tone firm.“What?” she replied, pretending she didn't know what he meant.“Where is the necklace? Where is your necklace?” James asked, getting more worked up“I threw it away,” Zelda said, her voice steady.“You threw it away!? Why?” James asked, clearly caught off guard by the answer. He knew how much Zelda loved that necklace. He had never seen her without it, ever since he put it on her neck himself“I want a divorce,” she said simply.James's expression shifted from confusion to anger and disbelief.“What are you talking about? What divorce? You're the one who wanted to marry me,” he said, disbelief filling his voice. “You drugged me and climbed into my bed, making sure that everyone knew that we were together, tying me to you, forcing me to marry you, and now you want a divorce?” he laughed mockingly
James did not wait for Zelda to answer him as he went towards the cabinet and came back with a pregnancy test. He showed it to her, placing it in front of her face."Here, take it," he said.Zelda looked at him as she took the pregnancy test in her hand."I'm not pregnant," she told him as she placed the test on the counter.James took it back and shoved it toward her again. "Take the test.""I'm not pregnant. You just came back yesterday, and you forced me to take the pills after we slept together. How could I be pregnant?" Zelda replied with frustration. "I don’t want to argue with you, James.""Just take the test," he insisted, his tone unmoving.Zelda sighed. "Okay, fine," she said, grabbing the test from him. She raised her eyebrow at him before asking, "Can I have some privacy?""No, I want to see you do it."She sighed again but complied. Fighting James was a losing battle, she was already tired with the whole day. Zelda peed on the stick, all while watching him stand over her
James looked at her and sneered. "How will you survive without me?" he taunted mockingly.Zelda felt the weight of his words. She knew what he meant, she belonged to the Ferguson family. They had saved her life, taken her to school, fed her, and clothed her. And then she became his wife, continuing to use the Ferguson name and power. How was she going to survive without him in her life?Great question. But beneath her doubts, Zelda was determined. She had a secret of her own. What James didn’t know was that all the credit cards he had given her were untouched. She had never used a single cent.Ever since she was old enough to start working, she had ensured that she bought whatever she could on her own without depending on the Fergusons. She took any side jobs she could because she felt guilty to depend on the Ferguson's so much. She felt like a burden to them and hence she tried to become independent on her own.Since they had married, she had been taking care of her sick brother with
It was evening when Zelda finished her part-time job at the local training institute, where she had been working as a fashion design instructor for the past year in the evening. She taught adults about fashion, clothing, and makeup, which she enjoyed.Since she no longer worked at Ferguson's company anymore, she came to work early to get ready for her evening class and find something to do, that's when the manager approached her with an unexpected request."Zelda! I’m so glad I found you here," the manager said with relief. "Mary couldn’t make it to her children’s class today. Would you mind covering for her?"Zelda smiled. "Of course, I’m free right now during the day, so it’s not a problem."The manager’s face lit up. "Oh, thank you so much. Actually, Mary’s husband was just transferred, so we’re going to need someone to take over her position permanently. If you’re interested, go through today’s class, and let me know how you feel afterwards."Zelda got excited. "I’ll give it a try
Zelda left the hospital and walked toward the taxi stand nearby, hoping to find a cab to take her to Jian's apartment. But to her disappointment, there was no taxi in sight. With a sigh, she pulled out her phone to order an Uber instead.Just as she was finalizing the order, a car pulled up in front of her, stopping abruptly. She looked up, surprised, and saw the driver turning to face her…it was Hammer.“Zelda!” Hammer greeted her, his face lighting up with a mixture of surprise and curiosity.“Yes, it’s me,” she replied with a small smile, taken aback as he stepped out of the car.“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Do you need a lift? Are you headed home?”“Oh no, it’s fine,” Zelda replied quickly. “I already called an Uber; it’s on its way. I wouldn’t want to interfere with your plans or take up your evening.”Hammer waved her concerns away. “Don’t worry about it. Actually, I was just thinking of calling you.”Zelda’s interest was piqued. “Oh? Really?”“Yeah,” Hammer nodded. “I
Zelda's brother, Michael, meant everything to her. Growing up with a mother who was more concerned about her appearance and keeping her violent, gambling husband appeased, Michael had always stepped in to protect her.He took the brunt of their mother's neglect and their father's wrath, sacrificing his own well-being for her sake. Despite their age difference, he had been her rock, always there to shield her from harm.On that fateful night when she was taken to the Fergusons' home, Michael had just returned from a camping trip. After receiving a call from their father, who had been drinking, he rushed home, anger bubbling beneath the surface. The moment he arrived, he found Zelda bleeding, having suffered at the hands of their father. Without hesitation, he pushed their father away and cradled his sister in his arms, desperate to protect her.His first instinct was to take her to the Wenger family, who had cared for Zelda until she was six. But they were nowhere to be found. In a pan
James Ferguson got home that evening, parked his car, and touched his cheek, remembering the slap Zelda had given him in the hallway. Standing at the door, he felt a confusing mix of anger and longing. He wasn’t prepared to be here, wasn’t sure he could handle walking into a home that felt so entwined with her presence, even in her absence. This house held so many memories. When he’d bought it after marrying Zelda, it had symbolized their life together, a space where he always expected her to be. He hated the idea of going inside, knowing she wouldn’t be there. Part of him wanted to turn around and drive away, but he was here, and since she was determined not to return, he had no choice. He opened the door, foolishly expecting Zelda to appear, coming down the stairs, even though he knew better. The darkness wrapped around him as he stepped in, and suddenly a light switched on. Aunt Chien, the live-in servant, stood there, looking at him.“Sir, I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect you to be b
JamesI stood in front of the French window, my eyes fixed on the retreating figures of Bai Luoxing and Hellen Ferguson as they left the courtyard. The car pulled away, and the mansion fell into silence once more. But my mind was anything but quiet.Something about that day—the day Zelda and Bai Luoxing had coffee together—gnawed at me. I hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but now, it felt significant.I picked up my phone and dialled, my voice low and urgent."Twenty days ago, Zelda and Bai Luoxing had coffee in the café opposite the hospital. Check the surveillance footage from that day. Find out if any of the waiters overheard their conversation."I hung up and turned around, my gaze sweeping across the bedroom. Hellen Ferguson had said Zelda’s things were still here, and she was right. The room was filled with traces of her—a cashmere shawl draped over the sofa, her favourite lotion on the dressing table, the faint scent of her perfume lingering in the air. It was as if she ha
JamesThe words hit me like a sledgehammer, each one carving deeper into the fragile shell I’d built around myself. Jian’s voice was sharp, unrelenting, and every accusation she hurled at me felt like a knife twisting in my chest. I wanted to know—no, I *needed* to know—how much I had missed, how much I had destroyed without even realizing it. It was a masochistic urge, a desperate need to understand how I had failed her so completely.I stood there, my hand clenched around the broken porcelain, the shards digging into my palm. The pain was nothing compared to the storm raging inside me. Jian’s words echoed in my mind, each one a revelation I wasn’t prepared for."Are your material compensations what Zelda wants? Zelda’s scholarship and prize money from her fashion modelling were enough for her to live on! She could have left the Ferguson family a long time ago. She’s talented, James. She is a model, a fashion designer and a choreographer, she has millions of fans. Do you know why she
ZeldaAn hour later, I found myself in a secluded villa, safe and hidden from prying eyes. Lisa had prepared a cup of calming tea for me, and I sipped it slowly, the warmth soothing both my stomach and my nerves. I was waiting for Jim’s call, my mind swirling with questions and doubts. Why had he gone out of his way to help me? What did he want in return? When the phone finally rang, I answered immediately, my voice steady but laced with curiosity."Mr Nan, can I ask why you’re helping me like this?"Jim’s voice was light, almost playful."What do you think? I want to keep a beautiful woman in a golden house?"I froze, my breath catching in my throat. My heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to respond. But then I heard him laugh, and the tension in my chest eased slightly."Seriously? I didn’t realize you’re quite narcissistic," I shot back, my tone teasing but my cheeks burning with embarrassment.Jim chuckled again, and I could almost picture the smirk on his fa
JamesI let go of Jim abruptly, my attention snapping to the letter Leiy held out. The envelope bore my name, and the handwriting was unmistakably Zelda’s. My chest tightened as I took it, my fingers trembling slightly despite my best efforts to steady them.Leiy’s voice broke through the haze of my thoughts. “It’s addressed to you. It must have been sent when Madam was still there.”I barely registered his words as I tore open the envelope. Inside was a single sheet of paper, thin and fragile, with just a few lines of text. My eyes scanned the words slowly, each one cutting deeper than the last. By the time I finished reading, my vision was blurred, my chest heaving with a mix of anger, pain, and disbelief.I crumpled the letter in my fist, my jaw clenched so tightly it ached. Without a word, I turned and strode out of the room, my mind racing. Jim’s voice followed me, calm and unhurried, as if he hadn’t just been at the receiving end of my fury.“Take care, Mr. Ferguson.”I stopped
JamesI laughed, but it wasn’t out of joy. No, it was a bitter, angry laugh, one that even I could feel was chilling. The sound of it echoed in the room, sharp and unsettling. My little girl, Zelda, had really grown up. She had become so capable, so cunning. How dare she just vanish from my world like this? Disappear without a trace? It was unthinkable.I had always said I wouldn’t let her leave me, and yet here we were. She thought she could run, but she was wrong. Dead wrong. When I find her—and I *will* find her—she’ll see just how serious I was. She’ll regret ever trying to escape.Leiy ’s voice broke through my thoughts, cautious and measured.“Miss Jian is quite skilled in martial arts, but she has a bad temper. I’m afraid she’ll inevitably fight. If Miss Jian gets hurt, your wife will probably be angry when she comes back…”I opened my eyes, my vision blurred with rage. My bloodshot eyes locked onto Leiy, and I spoke through gritted teeth, my voice cold and cutting.“Angry? Oh,
JamesThe red dress Bai Luoxing wore was striking, but as I looked at her, my mind wandered. The vibrant colour reminded me of Zelda—Zelda as a child, always dressed in red by Old Mrs. Ferguson. She had looked so radiant in those clothes, her little face glowing with innocence and joy.I hadn’t seen her wear red in years, not since she was a girl. The thought crossed my mind: she would look stunning in it now. Maybe I should have a dress made for her, something bold and beautiful, just for me.My gaze lingered on Bai Luoxing for a moment too long, lost in my thoughts. She must have mistaken my attention for something else because her cheeks flushed, and she lowered her eyes shyly.“James?” she said softly, pulling me back to the present. “Let’s go up.”She turned and hurried up the stairs, her skirt lifted delicately in her hands. I watched her for a moment, a faint sense of unease settling over me. There was something about her demeanour that felt… off. But I couldn’t quite put my fi
JamesThe scent of soap still clung to my skin, a clean, fresh counterpoint to the lingering warmth of the shower. I descended the stairs, expecting the usual quiet of a late afternoon, but the living room held a tableau that stopped me cold. Zelda. She was there, bathed in the soft, fading light that streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Bent slightly, almost reverently, she arranged roses in a white porcelain vase. A simple lilac dress, loose and comfortable, draped over her, and strands of her long hair, the colour of spun moonlight, brushed against her cheek. Her face, usually so animated, was serene, a gentle smile playing on her lips. The sunset painted the sky in hues of orange and gold, a breathtaking backdrop. And there she was, Zelda, a figure caught in a moment of quiet grace, a living painting. I found myself rooted to the spot, halfway down the escalator, watching her.I don't know how long I stood there, lost in the unexpected beauty of the scene. It was as if t
ZeldaAfter that day, the man who used to come home every night became distant, buried in his work. Days passed without a word from him. I told myself it was for the best—I was busy too, consumed by the fashion modelling show’s performances. But late at night, lying alone in the vast emptiness of our bed, my thoughts would inevitably drift to him.I wondered if James was tired—tired of us, tired of the constant push and pull. And then my mind would wander to Bai Luoxing, her relentless enthusiasm, and the way the Bai family and Hellen Ferguson seemed to support her so openly. Had they made progress? Were they moving on without me?Even if I didn’t seek it out, news of Bai Luoxing’s high-profile appearances reached me. The missing eldest daughter of the Bai family had been found, and she was everywhere, basking in the spotlight. Her parents were overjoyed, and the world seemed to celebrate her return.Meanwhile, I poured myself into my work. When the second round of performances in the
JamesDamn it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Bai Luoxing's...her phantom limb. Covered in blood. Scratched, rubbed raw. It wasn't some trick, some illusion. That was real, a real pain he was experiencing.Zelda...she looked terrified. My sudden outburst, it clearly shook her. Her face, was pale, her lips trembling. I'd been trying to be gentle, and considerate. Trying to coax her. And for a moment, just a moment, she'd almost believed it. Believed I was something I was not."I am a mean and selfish person, but Mr Ferguson has only just realized this now." Her voice was sharp, laced with a bitter edge. "What? You found out that I'm not cute, and Mr Ferguson can't continue to act affectionately? Then don't act anymore, I'm exhausted for you."That sneer, those eyes. They were filled with ice, but beneath it, I saw a crack, a sliver of pain. It twisted something inside me. My jaw clenched, my eyes filled with a resentment I couldn't quite name. I wanted to...I wanted to devour he
