ANNA'S POV The whole place looked too calm for an invasion. Apart from the large influx of armed guards, I could not hear any sound of a battle. That however was not any of my business. My business was the only thing I cared about and that imbecile Xavier was trying to block my path. I walked around the palace, so magnificent it felt otherworldly, and with every step I took and the magnificence I beheld, my anger and hate for the royal house of the Black Moon pack grew. I walked aimlessly with no direction in mind except the direction my nose led me. It had been a long time since I perceived the sweet smell of fresh bloody meat baked with butter and spices and the sweet-smelling scent of the roast drew me using my nose as bait towards what I suspected to be the kitchen. I walked around freely, facing only a few oppositions from the royal guards which I happily and easily obliged. In fact, I was glad for their opposition as it accorded me a means to unleash the rage that was coursing through my veins and making my blood boil. The surprise on their faces, when I faced and defeated four of them at once granted me the satisfaction I always got when I put men in their right places. How could that imbecile, Xavier refuse me? Who did he think he was? I could not stop thinking about all he had said in the throne room, despite the strong pull of the sweet scent from the kitchen. I never thought a time would come when a man rumored to be an imbecile who could not rule over his pack and who had to answer to his uncle would ever talk to me the way I have been spoken to of late by the impotent fool I have been offered to in marriage. It had taken every form of self-will in me to keep my temper in check and all of that I did, not for my sake but for the sake of my father and my people. I was their only hope and I was not going to destroy our only chance of survival one more time. If I was the bastard, Xavier, I would go and thank my dad and my people for their sake was the only reason his heart was still beating in his chest and not my hands. I pushed my thoughts back and focused on the food. I would deal with Xavier and his foolish uncle later. I must have gotten closer to the kitchen because my mouth had started to already taste the delicious meal even without seeing it. My feet hurried, drawn by the idea of a full belly and the juicy taste of the butter dripping from the well-roasted meat. I got to the kitchen door and without any thought of my actions, I raised my hand to knock on the door. "Madam?" A voice filled with uncertainty called from behind me stopping me right before my fist landed on the door. I turned around sharply. "Yes?" I answered looking into the face of a young guard. "Are you by chance Princess Anna?" The young guard asked. I sighed and then dropped my hands from the door and turned completely to fully face the young guard. A huge part of me wanted to run up on him and send him unconscious as I did his other colleagues that had crossed my path but there was something about him that stopped me. His eyes were innocent. An innocence characterized by fear. He looked out of place, his uniform unfitting on his young frame. All these features struck a chord in me as I found him familiar even though I was a hundred percent sure I had never seen him before. "Who is asking?" I answered, the instinctive urge in me to always answer a question with another question taking over the need to be courteous as royalty. The boy looked relieved as if my answer had assured him of safety. "His Royal Majesty, Alpha Lartes has sent for you. He awaits you in the throne room," The young guard said. My brows raised but for once in my life, I decided to think with my head and not my fists. "Okay. I will be there," I answered. I waited for the young guard to be on his way, leaving me to continue what I had already started and that which tormented my nose, my tongue, and my belly with the promises of a delicious taste and a full belly but he just stood there looking at me. "Is there any problem?" I asked, my words getting mispronounced by the large amount of saliva that had been flooding my mouth. "No, ma'am. It is just that I am to escort you back to the throne room. There is an attacker in the palace and he has successfully attacked and disarmed a good number of the guards and so it is not wise for you to walk around unguarded," The young guard said. For the record, I tried not to laugh but I couldn't help it. I burst into a peal of laughter. I almost fell to the ground even. The confused look on the young guard's face didn't help matters and it took a lot of my willpower to be able to stop myself from laughing. "I am unsafe?" I asked amused at all he had just finished saying. "Yes!" The guard answered his eyebrows scrunched up in confusion as to why I was laughing. "Okay. If you say so," I said to him. If only he knew he was the unsafe one. If only he knew I could take away his ability to be a full-functioning man without breaking a sweat. If only he knew I was the one who had attacked all those guards. But he did not know and that was why I did not blame him. I had a strong urge however to tell him that I was the attacker they were all afraid of but I knew it was all hopeless. He would not believe me. No one would or did. Moreover, I did not want anyone to know my capabilities. I was not here to divulge anything to them rather I was here to spy on them and that I intend to do no matter what their toothless bulldog of an heir did to stop me. "Lead the way then..." I said with a befitting smile.
ANNA'S POV I walked behind the young guard though a huge part of me stayed at that kitchen door lamenting what could be described as the sweet aroma of butter-soaked roast bidding farewell to my crying tongue and stomach.I was pissed and all through the walk back to the throne room, I resisted the urge to wrench the little guard's neck, rendering him unconscious, and running back to the kitchen. My stomach grumble loudly, letting its displeasure known about being promised food and then being deprived of it."Sheesh!" I whispered to it as I clutched it.The guard kept on looking around, fidgeting. I knew it was out of fright. He was watching out for the attacker.I rolled my eyes at him. A good part of me wanted to enjoy his discomfort but I was too hungry, and this pissed me off."Relax. There is no one to harm you," I said, trying to comfort him as I was certain that I was not going to hurt him.I studied him as I walked more as a means to get my mind off the food I had just missed
ANNA'S POVUnconsciously my head swiveled to face the guard who had just finished speaking. My eyes narrowed as I wondered what was going to happen.Would he really sell their prince out?"What?!" Alpha Lartes bellowed, almost rising out of his chair with the force with which he had spoken."Yes, My King. We think we know exactly who is betraying you in your court," The guard said again.I looked at the two men dumbfounded, my mind already working out the mechanics of what was happening right now.Even though I still could not believe it, I discovered that the lame imbecile whom I was to marry was also a victim of the devil sitting next to me.I had overheard his conversation with the man whom he had helped escape and from that, I knew that he was a friend since he was a foe of my foe. There was no way I could let him get caught. The fact I hated his guts did not mean I should allow a possible ally to be lost. Laertes was a strong force, if I was going to beat him, I needed all the al
XAVIER'S POVI marched out of the tunnel, my heart set on one thing, determined to avenge the blood of Harrison and my dead comrades.I did not know what I was going to do but I knew where I was going to start and so I marched onwards to the throne room.I was just a few steps away from the throne room when I heard my Uncle's rumbling laughter.I squeezed my fists tight, trying to hold back the rage within me.How could he laugh so heartily when my comrades were lying dead? How could he find joy when all those who had been my source of joy and support ever since he had confiscated what was mine were now one with the dust of the Earth?I wanted to scream but I bit my tongue down.I could feel the hilt of my dagger digging into my flesh, a reminder that it was ready to plunge deep into the heart of my parents' murderer. But I paused for a while where I was.I knew if I walked into that room, I would do something drastic and that was not who I was. I was a meticulous person who believed
XAVIER'S POV.We watched each other.I could feel our kin's blood boil within us.I pondered on his question. Who was I?The problem was I had been asking myself the same question ever since I woke up to find my parents dead and my birthright snatched from me and as I stood today, I still haven't found an answer."I am Prince Xavier Octavian of the Black Moon pack," I said out loud with my shoulders high and my chest pushed outwards with pride.I saw a smile play on my uncle's face. I had said exactly what he had wanted to hear.I had intentionally and deliberately left out the part of my introduction which stated that I was the rightful heir to the throne.I had done it intentionally to make him happy. My words would show him that I accept his leadership and would throw him off my scent."And where does your loyalty lie?" He asked but this time, his tone was more subtle."To the throne," I said with a bow.Once again, I had intentionally chosen my words.I had not called his name as
XAVIER'S POV"Give it to the Prince," My uncle said to the guard —much to my surprise but who was I to refuse such an opportunity?I was handed the sword and I held it up, admiring the sheer beauty of it.I knew that legend had it that the sword was forged in the faraway lands of the dwarves with a craft that had been lost to men. The blade was carved out of a metal whose origin was unknown to any one of us still alive. The hilt of the sword was decorated with twelve diamonds embedded into a golden case.I knew all this because this sword once belonged to my father.I could still hear him tell me, "One day when I'm no more, you would wield this sword to protect our people who I have left under your care."A sadness washed over me as I admired the sword."I have failed you Father," I said to myself."Xavier, do the honors of ridding us of this buffoon," My uncle said to me, breaking my reverie."It will be my pleasure, My King," I said and I meant it."No! No! No!" I heard Reed cry out
ANNA'S POV There was no way on Earth I was going to share a bed with this spineless wolf, I declared to myself. When Alpha Lartes had said it, bile had shot up into my throat as I was filled with disgust.I would rather stay in the pig sty than stay with an imbecile.I watched as Uncle and nephew argued our fate, my fingers crossed that for once the spineless imbecile, I was forcefully yoked with would show a bit of spine and refute his uncle's decision but it turned out that once a coward, always a coward. And so I walked, with my head held high and my heart feeling like one condemned to her death along with the maids, to the room of my betrothed. As we walked in, my eyes opened wide at the splendor of the room. The splendor was so magnificent that it left me, a princess dumbfounded. The Black River Pack was indeed evil. To live in such splendor when the people in other packs met their deaths from starvation showed the level of their callousness.I walked around, admiring the room,
ANNA'S POVI wished so badly that I could turn back the hands of time and change my actions. I would have allowed his head, which was full of sods, to roll to the ground instead of innocent Reed.Slowly, I spat out all the grapes into my hands, my tongue all of a sudden turning bitter.I threw them back into the bowl and walked to the bed where I went and slumped into its soft embrace.I was exhausted. More from anger than from the journey.I needed a plan and I needed it fast. I needed to take my vengeance. Moreover, my imbecile fiancé was a liability to me. With him in my way, he made my task more risky.I needed to move very fast before he destroyed my chances of saving my people. As I devised my plan, my mind drifted off to my father and Kira at home till it finally drifted off to sleep.I was awakened moments later by the voice of a woman talking above me.I opened my eyes fast, my mind waking with so much speed that my body quickly positioned itself in a defensive position read
XAVIER'S POV"Stop here," I said to the driver. The carriage creaked to a stop, the hooves of the two stallions coming to a halt."Come and pick me up at this exact spot by nine p.m.," I instructed the driver before opening the door of the carriage and climbing down.I walked to the front of Phillip's Bar and got in casually.I had already donned my coat and hat back in the carriage. I had my head slightly downwards, avoiding eye contact with anyone in the bar.I went over to the counter and plopped into a chair."What would you have Sir?" The barman asked me."A glass of water would do," I said.My body was craving alcohol so badly. I needed it to be able to get over the exhilarating events that had happened today.Losing my comrades most brutally and gaining a demon as a roommate all in one day was something that needed one to get drunk to a stupor over but I could not. There was work to do.But a little alcohol wouldn't hurt. The noise of drunk men and giggling women filled the air
