“What?”
“Yes, my King,” the guard cried. “We need to get you to safety now.”My uncle turned to face another guard standing at the door“Call for backup at once,” he said. “I want a thousand guards manning the walls of this palace. If any harm comes upon my nephew or his mate, count yourselves dead.”“Yes, my King,” the guard nodded and disappeared around the corner.“And you, come show me where the intruders are,” my uncle thundered.I watched as they marched out of the throne room and immediately they were out of sight, I ran to meet Harrison who was still on the floor.“Harry?” I tried to get him to sit up but he pushed my hand away. “Arr, you okay Harry?”“Don’t touch me!” he hissed. “You almost killed me, you fucking animal!”“You know I had to make it look real,” I frowned. “I’m really sorry. I’ve got to get you out of here now before he realizes there’s no invasion.”“How would we get out of here with a thousand guards manning the walls?” Harrison sighed. “And your new girlfriend staring at us as we fell from the sky.”I quickly remembered that Anna was still there and I spun around to see her staring intently at us.“She’s with my uncle,” I whispered in his ears.“I’m not with your uncle,” Anna replied.I stared at her, shocked. How could she have heard that?“And I’m not with you either,” she added, coming closer to me. “You and your uncle are the reason my people suffer.”I frowned. I definitely wasn’t expecting my betrothed to be accusing me.“What do you mean by that?”“Dude, you’re seriously not doing this with her!” Harrison cried. “She’s stalling with this conversation, buying your uncle time, and before you know it, he’ll be back and I’ll be fucking dead!”His words registered in my brain immediately and I realized her evil plans at once. Of course, she was working with my uncle. How could I be so stupid to even want to believe that she actually had a problem with my uncle?“I know you would tell him that I released the prisoner when he comes back,” I scoffed. “It doesn’t matter anyways. He can’t touch me.”“I have no business with you and your theatrics,” she shrugged. “Just watch your back, Prince Xavier. Watch it.”She turned around and started out of the throne room and I was left wondering what her true intentions were. She definitely didn’t like me, and apparently, she hated my uncle as much.“Don’t tell me you’re thinking about her safety already,” Harrison grunted and smacked me on my head.“Those guards would harass her out there,” I said as I marched out of the throne room. “I need her to be fine, so I can know her plan and take her down myself.”I pushed the door of the throne room open and I heard the sound of a metal weapon crash to the floor. Under the dim light of the hallway, I was able to make out her figure as she walked towards the exit and also, the silhouette of five guards that lay disarmed and semi-paralyzed on the floor.“Come on, I know a secret passageway,” I said to Harrison once I had gotten in back. “I would find Anna later. There’s something about her.”“There’s something about her eh?” Harrison mocked.“Not that,” I frowned. “Have you forgotten I was the one who rejected her?”“You know, that leaves me wondering,” Harrison said. “Why exactly did you reject that beauty?”I pushed him across the room till we got to the spot where I knew the tunnel was. I had built it with the help of some friends a few years ago and it led directly from the palace to our secret hideout where we had our meetings.“She took down five guards,” I said once we had gotten in. “How is that possible Harry?”“How the fuck would I know dude?” Harrison grunted. “Let's get out of here first. We can think about all that later.”I sighed and continued crawling down the tunnel. Harrison was right behind me, humming away unconcernedly and after a few minutes of crawling on all fours, we got to the base. At our secret hideout, we usually had the base of the tunnel covered with a metallic rim and hidden by a fine mat of carpet grass and coral leaves. No one had been able to uncover our little tunnel in years, but as I was soon to find out, our luck had finally run out.I pushed at the base expecting the metal covering to pop open but it remained stuck. It was probably rusted and needed a little more force. I pushed again but it still didn’t budge.“It’s not moving,” I said. “We’re stuck here.”“Maybe one of us is there. Let’s call for help,” Harrison suggested.I shook my head in the negative. “That’s too risky. They would all be busy coordinating the staged invasion, and moreover, my Uncle’s guards would be everywhere now. What if one of them opens this thing and finds us here?”“Come on,” Harrison grunted. “You have a wild imagination. No guard would be in the middle of an abandoned barn when there is news of our enemies breaching the city walls.“Don’t do this, Harry…” I started.“Help!” he cried, ignoring me. “I can’t have you attempt to kill me twice in one day.”Just then, we heard the familiar sound of the metal rim. It popped open a second later and a hand reached in to grab us.“Told you,” Harrison winked at me.He grabbed the hand and the person pulled him out of the dark tunnel.I paused for a second in anticipation of Harrison's warning and as expected, I heard his scream the next second.“It’s a trap Xavier!” he cried. “It's…”I waited, listening but his warning didn’t come anymore.“Harry?”The next second, his limp body fell through the opening and down on me. Blood was flowing freely from a cut on his neck.“Harry!” I cried, holding him. “I’ll get you treatment. Hang in there.”He coughed, spluttering black blood from his mouth all over me and his eyes twitched.“Harrison,” I called one last time. He did not hear me, however. His eyes were stationary already. He was dead.I allowed him to drop to the floor and I watched as he dissolved into dust. I felt the tears well up in my eyes and this time, I couldn’t hold them in. I cried for my friend in the dark tunnel. His only offense was trying to help me recover what was rightfully mine, but he had died like a rogue.I wiped my tears and stood up from the floor. I was going to avenge Harrison, even if it was with the last drop of blood in my body. It was either my uncle, Lartes, or his accomplice, Anna. All I needed to do was to start finding clues. And this time, I knew where I was going to start my search from.ANNA'S POVThe whole place looked too calm for an invasion. Apart from the large influx of armed guards, I could not hear any sound of a battle. That however was not any of my business. My business was the only thing I cared about and that imbecile Xavier was trying to block my path.I walked around the palace, so magnificent it felt otherworldly, and with every step I took and the magnificence I beheld, my anger and hate for the royal house of the Black Moon pack grew.I walked aimlessly with no direction in mind except the direction my nose led me. It had been a long time since I perceived the sweet smell of fresh bloody meat baked with butter and spices and the sweet-smelling scent of the roast drew me using my nose as bait towards what I suspected to be the kitchen.I walked around freely, facing only a few oppositions from the royal guards which I happily and easily obliged. In fact, I was glad for their opposition as it accorded me a means to unleash the rage that was coursing t
ANNA'S POV I walked behind the young guard though a huge part of me stayed at that kitchen door lamenting what could be described as the sweet aroma of butter-soaked roast bidding farewell to my crying tongue and stomach.I was pissed and all through the walk back to the throne room, I resisted the urge to wrench the little guard's neck, rendering him unconscious, and running back to the kitchen. My stomach grumble loudly, letting its displeasure known about being promised food and then being deprived of it."Sheesh!" I whispered to it as I clutched it.The guard kept on looking around, fidgeting. I knew it was out of fright. He was watching out for the attacker.I rolled my eyes at him. A good part of me wanted to enjoy his discomfort but I was too hungry, and this pissed me off."Relax. There is no one to harm you," I said, trying to comfort him as I was certain that I was not going to hurt him.I studied him as I walked more as a means to get my mind off the food I had just missed
ANNA'S POVUnconsciously my head swiveled to face the guard who had just finished speaking. My eyes narrowed as I wondered what was going to happen.Would he really sell their prince out?"What?!" Alpha Lartes bellowed, almost rising out of his chair with the force with which he had spoken."Yes, My King. We think we know exactly who is betraying you in your court," The guard said again.I looked at the two men dumbfounded, my mind already working out the mechanics of what was happening right now.Even though I still could not believe it, I discovered that the lame imbecile whom I was to marry was also a victim of the devil sitting next to me.I had overheard his conversation with the man whom he had helped escape and from that, I knew that he was a friend since he was a foe of my foe. There was no way I could let him get caught. The fact I hated his guts did not mean I should allow a possible ally to be lost. Laertes was a strong force, if I was going to beat him, I needed all the al
XAVIER'S POVI marched out of the tunnel, my heart set on one thing, determined to avenge the blood of Harrison and my dead comrades.I did not know what I was going to do but I knew where I was going to start and so I marched onwards to the throne room.I was just a few steps away from the throne room when I heard my Uncle's rumbling laughter.I squeezed my fists tight, trying to hold back the rage within me.How could he laugh so heartily when my comrades were lying dead? How could he find joy when all those who had been my source of joy and support ever since he had confiscated what was mine were now one with the dust of the Earth?I wanted to scream but I bit my tongue down.I could feel the hilt of my dagger digging into my flesh, a reminder that it was ready to plunge deep into the heart of my parents' murderer. But I paused for a while where I was.I knew if I walked into that room, I would do something drastic and that was not who I was. I was a meticulous person who believed
XAVIER'S POV.We watched each other.I could feel our kin's blood boil within us.I pondered on his question. Who was I?The problem was I had been asking myself the same question ever since I woke up to find my parents dead and my birthright snatched from me and as I stood today, I still haven't found an answer."I am Prince Xavier Octavian of the Black Moon pack," I said out loud with my shoulders high and my chest pushed outwards with pride.I saw a smile play on my uncle's face. I had said exactly what he had wanted to hear.I had intentionally and deliberately left out the part of my introduction which stated that I was the rightful heir to the throne.I had done it intentionally to make him happy. My words would show him that I accept his leadership and would throw him off my scent."And where does your loyalty lie?" He asked but this time, his tone was more subtle."To the throne," I said with a bow.Once again, I had intentionally chosen my words.I had not called his name as
XAVIER'S POV"Give it to the Prince," My uncle said to the guard —much to my surprise but who was I to refuse such an opportunity?I was handed the sword and I held it up, admiring the sheer beauty of it.I knew that legend had it that the sword was forged in the faraway lands of the dwarves with a craft that had been lost to men. The blade was carved out of a metal whose origin was unknown to any one of us still alive. The hilt of the sword was decorated with twelve diamonds embedded into a golden case.I knew all this because this sword once belonged to my father.I could still hear him tell me, "One day when I'm no more, you would wield this sword to protect our people who I have left under your care."A sadness washed over me as I admired the sword."I have failed you Father," I said to myself."Xavier, do the honors of ridding us of this buffoon," My uncle said to me, breaking my reverie."It will be my pleasure, My King," I said and I meant it."No! No! No!" I heard Reed cry out
ANNA'S POV There was no way on Earth I was going to share a bed with this spineless wolf, I declared to myself. When Alpha Lartes had said it, bile had shot up into my throat as I was filled with disgust.I would rather stay in the pig sty than stay with an imbecile.I watched as Uncle and nephew argued our fate, my fingers crossed that for once the spineless imbecile, I was forcefully yoked with would show a bit of spine and refute his uncle's decision but it turned out that once a coward, always a coward. And so I walked, with my head held high and my heart feeling like one condemned to her death along with the maids, to the room of my betrothed. As we walked in, my eyes opened wide at the splendor of the room. The splendor was so magnificent that it left me, a princess dumbfounded. The Black River Pack was indeed evil. To live in such splendor when the people in other packs met their deaths from starvation showed the level of their callousness.I walked around, admiring the room,
ANNA'S POVI wished so badly that I could turn back the hands of time and change my actions. I would have allowed his head, which was full of sods, to roll to the ground instead of innocent Reed.Slowly, I spat out all the grapes into my hands, my tongue all of a sudden turning bitter.I threw them back into the bowl and walked to the bed where I went and slumped into its soft embrace.I was exhausted. More from anger than from the journey.I needed a plan and I needed it fast. I needed to take my vengeance. Moreover, my imbecile fiancé was a liability to me. With him in my way, he made my task more risky.I needed to move very fast before he destroyed my chances of saving my people. As I devised my plan, my mind drifted off to my father and Kira at home till it finally drifted off to sleep.I was awakened moments later by the voice of a woman talking above me.I opened my eyes fast, my mind waking with so much speed that my body quickly positioned itself in a defensive position read
