“Your betrothed would be here any minute,” my father, Alpha Faustus announced, breaking the eerie silence in the dining.
My step-sister, Kira was present at the dining but I knew very well that he was not referring to her. He was talking to me. I had been betrothed to the son of the Alpha of a neighboring pack, Prince Christopher, and no matter how much I protested, my father would not hear of it.“You don’t seem to be excited, Anna?” he frowned.I stared up at him and rolled my eyes. Did he really expect me to be excited after he had married me off like an animal without seeking my consent?“I’m doing this for the family,” my father pressed on. “For your mum…”“Enough!” I cut in. “Don’t speak about my mother, please.”I knew all he had to say. It was the same old story –our pack was lacking resources after the wars and we needed alliances with richer packs to survive. My marriage to Prince Christopher would mean the end of the hunger in our pack. According to my father, their pack was one of the richest in the world.I had barely started eating my food when the doors of the dining hall swung open.“The Alpha, Kasper Noland, and his son, Prince Christopher have arrived,” a guard announced. My father stood up immediately, gathering his red robes. “Let my guests in!”The guard stepped back and our guests walked in. My eyes scanned the Alpha first. He was a short man with a wild look on his face and from the way his pot belly bobbed up and down as he walked, I wondered if he would be happy to share the food in his kingdom with us. My betrothed, Christopher was better off. He was tall and slim with sand-colored hair and bright eyes. He still had the wild look on his face but at least he was handsome.“Welcome to my kingdom, my esteemed guests,” my father said. “It is the usual tradition of the Black Water Pack to tell our guests our rich and ancient history and I would be pleased to do you the honors. About two hundred years ago…”“Oh shut it old fool!” Alpha Kasper grunted. “We all know your wolves are starving to death and all you want is a share of the meat in my pack. Skip the damn formalities.”My father nodded quickly and sat down. “A very wise decision. Let’s go straight to business.”I shut my eyes tight, pained by what I was witnessing. An outsider, insulting my father in his pack…my own father, referring to me as a business.“Which one of them is Anna?” Alpha Kasper asked. “We don’t have all day.”I could feel my blood begin to boil within me. The Alpha was already getting on my nerves.“Anna…” I heard my father whisper. “Stand up.”I remained seated, my eyes fixed on the two men before me.“Anna, please…” my father whispered.I stood up slowly and for a split second, my eyes met with the Prince’s.“I am Anna,” I said.“Well come over here, would you?” Alpha Kasper grunted. As I approached him, he turned to his son. “Sure you want this one? Doesn’t look like she can satisfy you and raise a healthy heir.”I stopped dead in my tracks. “Excuse me?”My step-sister, Kira chose that exact moment to speak.“What the Alpha means is that you look pale and sickly,” she laughed. “You can’t satisfy his son on the bed.”I turned back to face Kira and I frowned. Yes, we hated each other, but we were still family. She was meant to be supporting me.“Why the look?” Kira protested. “Not like I’m lying. I mean, you’re a virgin. No prince would like to be mated to an inexperienced little girl.”“That’s enough Kira!” my father boomed. “You will not say a word at this dinner anymore. Understood?”Kira silently went back to her food but the damage had already been done. Prince Christopher stood up to his feet slowly and walked up to me. He assessed me for a minute before speaking.“She’s lying right?” he asked me. “You’re not a…”I looked him dead in the eyes, waiting for him to complete his statement.“I’m not a what?” I asked. “Or you don’t have the balls to say the word?”The dining fell silent immediately. From the corner of my eyes, I could see my father. His face was bowed down to the ground. Once again, I had fucked it up.“I would be your future Alpha,” Prince Christopher warned. “And you would be subject to me.”“I would never be subject to someone like you!” I spat back, annoyed. The prince turned to face his father, Alpha Kasper, and shook his head.“I’m sorry father,” he grunted. “I was wrong about her.Alpha Kasper shrugged and rose to his feet. “We would take our leave now.”“Oh no no no,” my father cried, rising to his feet. “Anna didn’t mean all that she said. She would love you, serve you, and give you a strong heir at the right time.”“You would hear from me Faustus,” Alpha Kasper growled. “You and your daughters have made foolery of me today.”He turned around and marched towards the door, his son following closely behind and my father gritted his teeth in anger.“What is wrong with the two of you!” he cried. “If we had sealed that deal, our stock for the winter could have been refilled.”Just then, a guard barged into the dining, holding a letter with a royal seal attached to it.“A letter from a friend,” the guard announced.“The one who just left?” my father frowned. The guard scratched his head, obviously confused before handing him the letter.“It’s from Lartes,” the guard said.I watched as my father heaved a deep breath and opened the letter. From the way his frail hands quivered as he opened it, I knew it was not good news. He had started dealing with the dangerous Lycan King, Alpha Lartes.“What is it, Father?” I asked.“This is not about you,” he grunted pushing me away. He walked up to where Kira sat on the dining and he smiled at her.“Get ready,” he said. “Tomorrow, you shall wed Prince Xavier, the Lycan king’s nephew.”“What did you just say?”“I said you shall be Prince Xavier’s mate,” my father thundered. “And that is final!”“The lame prince?” Kira laughed. “You want to marry me off to an imbecile? Really Dad?”“He is not lame,” my father retorted. “And he is not an imbecile either. All you’ve heard are fables, lies spread by their enemies.”“I’m not taking that risk Dad,” Kira shook her head. “I’d rather starve to death here.”“You would leave before the day breaks tomorrow,” my father grunted. “It is a short journey. You would not disgrace this family.”Kira stood up to her feet. “Watch me.” She dropped her fork on the table and walked out, leaving the two of us alone in the dining.“Kira!” my father called, but she didn’t even spare him a second look. She banged the door behind her as she left and I watched as my father sunk to the dining chair. My father, Alpha Faustus was now a shadow of his former self. He was no longer the handsome and jovial Alpha that our pack knew him to be. Ever since
It was another cold morning in the Blood Moon Pack and the very fact that my uncle, Lartes had summoned me to the throne room was enough to spoil my day. I flashed a feigned smile to the guard that broke the news to me and I quickly wore a leather jacket. I knew I had to give my uncle and his guards the impression that I was on their side. The tiniest hint of treason would have meant my warm blood watering the fields. My uncle, Lartes Octavian had assumed the role of the Lycan King of our pack, the Blood Moon Pack, and leader of the Council of Werewolves and Lycans after the mysterious death of my parents a year ago, and although the pack doctor had made a public announcement that their death was of natural causes, I never believed it. It was too much of a coincidence; the two of them died one night, and my uncle suddenly returned from his journey halfway across the West the next day. I knew he had a hand in their death and ever since then, I had devoted my time to secretly find
“What?”“Yes, my King,” the guard cried. “We need to get you to safety now.”My uncle turned to face another guard standing at the door “Call for backup at once,” he said. “I want a thousand guards manning the walls of this palace. If any harm comes upon my nephew or his mate, count yourselves dead.”“Yes, my King,” the guard nodded and disappeared around the corner.“And you, come show me where the intruders are,” my uncle thundered. I watched as they marched out of the throne room and immediately they were out of sight, I ran to meet Harrison who was still on the floor.“Harry?” I tried to get him to sit up but he pushed my hand away. “Arr, you okay Harry?”“Don’t touch me!” he hissed. “You almost killed me, you fucking animal!”“You know I had to make it look real,” I frowned. “I’m really sorry. I’ve got to get you out of here now before he realizes there’s no invasion.”“How would we get out of here with a thousand guards manning the walls?” Harrison sighed. “And your new girlfr
ANNA'S POVThe whole place looked too calm for an invasion. Apart from the large influx of armed guards, I could not hear any sound of a battle. That however was not any of my business. My business was the only thing I cared about and that imbecile Xavier was trying to block my path.I walked around the palace, so magnificent it felt otherworldly, and with every step I took and the magnificence I beheld, my anger and hate for the royal house of the Black Moon pack grew.I walked aimlessly with no direction in mind except the direction my nose led me. It had been a long time since I perceived the sweet smell of fresh bloody meat baked with butter and spices and the sweet-smelling scent of the roast drew me using my nose as bait towards what I suspected to be the kitchen.I walked around freely, facing only a few oppositions from the royal guards which I happily and easily obliged. In fact, I was glad for their opposition as it accorded me a means to unleash the rage that was coursing t
ANNA'S POV I walked behind the young guard though a huge part of me stayed at that kitchen door lamenting what could be described as the sweet aroma of butter-soaked roast bidding farewell to my crying tongue and stomach.I was pissed and all through the walk back to the throne room, I resisted the urge to wrench the little guard's neck, rendering him unconscious, and running back to the kitchen. My stomach grumble loudly, letting its displeasure known about being promised food and then being deprived of it."Sheesh!" I whispered to it as I clutched it.The guard kept on looking around, fidgeting. I knew it was out of fright. He was watching out for the attacker.I rolled my eyes at him. A good part of me wanted to enjoy his discomfort but I was too hungry, and this pissed me off."Relax. There is no one to harm you," I said, trying to comfort him as I was certain that I was not going to hurt him.I studied him as I walked more as a means to get my mind off the food I had just missed
ANNA'S POVUnconsciously my head swiveled to face the guard who had just finished speaking. My eyes narrowed as I wondered what was going to happen.Would he really sell their prince out?"What?!" Alpha Lartes bellowed, almost rising out of his chair with the force with which he had spoken."Yes, My King. We think we know exactly who is betraying you in your court," The guard said again.I looked at the two men dumbfounded, my mind already working out the mechanics of what was happening right now.Even though I still could not believe it, I discovered that the lame imbecile whom I was to marry was also a victim of the devil sitting next to me.I had overheard his conversation with the man whom he had helped escape and from that, I knew that he was a friend since he was a foe of my foe. There was no way I could let him get caught. The fact I hated his guts did not mean I should allow a possible ally to be lost. Laertes was a strong force, if I was going to beat him, I needed all the al
XAVIER'S POVI marched out of the tunnel, my heart set on one thing, determined to avenge the blood of Harrison and my dead comrades.I did not know what I was going to do but I knew where I was going to start and so I marched onwards to the throne room.I was just a few steps away from the throne room when I heard my Uncle's rumbling laughter.I squeezed my fists tight, trying to hold back the rage within me.How could he laugh so heartily when my comrades were lying dead? How could he find joy when all those who had been my source of joy and support ever since he had confiscated what was mine were now one with the dust of the Earth?I wanted to scream but I bit my tongue down.I could feel the hilt of my dagger digging into my flesh, a reminder that it was ready to plunge deep into the heart of my parents' murderer. But I paused for a while where I was.I knew if I walked into that room, I would do something drastic and that was not who I was. I was a meticulous person who believed
XAVIER'S POV.We watched each other.I could feel our kin's blood boil within us.I pondered on his question. Who was I?The problem was I had been asking myself the same question ever since I woke up to find my parents dead and my birthright snatched from me and as I stood today, I still haven't found an answer."I am Prince Xavier Octavian of the Black Moon pack," I said out loud with my shoulders high and my chest pushed outwards with pride.I saw a smile play on my uncle's face. I had said exactly what he had wanted to hear.I had intentionally and deliberately left out the part of my introduction which stated that I was the rightful heir to the throne.I had done it intentionally to make him happy. My words would show him that I accept his leadership and would throw him off my scent."And where does your loyalty lie?" He asked but this time, his tone was more subtle."To the throne," I said with a bow.Once again, I had intentionally chosen my words.I had not called his name as
