Sephora's POV
Four days came sooner than I thought. The entire pack was buzzing with activity. The sisiters no longer called me the Suprema and the little ones did the same. Today was finally the day. The new Suprema was going to be born. Her birth would mark my death and the end of my journey in this world. It was my duty to train her and after, I would pass away by her hand when she caeme of age. That was how the change of power worked in Mystic Shadow. No one could question it.Artemisia stood close by my side all day. I could feel her worry. Though it woud take another eighteen years for me to get my successor ready, time seemed to move faster when one knew that her days were numbered.Torch stands were erected as they would guide the path to the waters of the mystical stream. Fire was the elemnt of the Suprema alone. No one else had her element. The day seemed to move too slowy for me. I sat on my little cliff looking at the sky and watching my sisters prepare for the child. Artemisisa was guiding them as I watched from a distance. The winds that blew around me, whispered my successors name and all I could think about were the words that Kali had said. My susccessor would be 'unconventional'.The Mystic Shadow have lived in peace and security for centuries. I had been Suprema the longest and we have never hunted beyond the pack's border. No one knew what lay beyond it and no one wanted to know. It was a rule that had been in place for centuries and we kept to it strictly. We were happy and content and prosperous. What more would we actually want?I stood up and shifted into my wolf and howled at the sky. Immediately, the sisters stopped what they were doing and howled with me. Our howls in a melody only the forest understood. We were in perfect harmony with nature as all creatures should. I fell silent and so did the sisters and continued to watch my pack. The bright orange and red flames of my fiery wolf danced around me illuminating every around me.Suddenly, I was encircled by a black mist. My flames quivered a little and a black smokey wolf moved to sit beside me. It was Kali. No one knew what element her wolf was connected to. She was the only one, aside the Supreme that was born with a differnet element and just like the Suprema, the next shaman to be born was even rarer. For all I knew, she had been the shaman long before I had even been born but she looked just as young as the rest of us."The day seems too slow for you, Suprema. Do you wish to control the times. Staring at the sky will do you no good."We spoke through the telepathic link. Her voice was smooth and gentle, enshrouded in mystery and wisdom."I am nervous Mistress Kali. I want the peace here to be preserved.""A good reason to be nervous."She fell silent and turned away from me. We continued to watch the peaceful land as the sisters prepared for the ceremony in the evening."Sometimes chaos is needed to usher in a period of lasting peace. You have done your part as Suprema and have done well. The job of preservation is in your successors hands now."I exhaled and looked away from her black misty wolf. Smoke and fire sat side by side watching over the lands. She was right and there was nothing I could do. Worry would only make me more nervous for the task ahead."You should rest Sephora. The evening draws slowly. You need your strength for the ceremony."She was right. We stood up together and walked down from the cliff. My fiery light casted a bright light on the trees and her mysterious black mist veiled darkness on whatever it touched. We shifted into our human forms and walked into the main town. The sisters greeted us and Artemisia approached me."The torches are ready Sephora."I nodded and looked at them. They were perfectly arranged in a beautiful line. Everything was in place. We only waited for the moon."Good job Artemisia. You should rest. Tell the sisters as well. We move at first moonlight."She nodded and walked away. I turned to Kali and she smiled weakly."Artemisia will never get over your death. She is a strong warrior but nothing has prepared her for this loss."I looked away sadly and watched Artemisia talk to the sisters in the distance. Kali was right. I just wish I had more time to spend with her.I headed to the Suprema's palace and entered my room. I wanted to be alone; I needed to think. Every second that went by reminded me how close I was to meeting my successor. It was my job to train her for the next eighteen years before she would finally kill me and take over.Death was a stranger to no one. I only feared for the safety of my pack. My worry made my head heavy and I needed to rest. I closer my eyes and surrendered myself to sleep and the world of dreams.I found myself in my pack. My successor had her back turned and was talking to strange creatures. They looked like us but bulkier and taller with burly muscles and shorter hair. They for some strange reason, had their tails infront and in between their legs. Tails in front? I had never seen such strange creatures. I couldn't hear what they said but their voices were deep and commanding. Something about it was dominating yet soothing like the rush of waters from a cascading waterfall.I watched them talk and suddenly my successor stretched out her hand and immediately, I felt myself woken up from sleep. I opened my eyes and stared into my dark room. The moonlight seeped in through the window and gave it an eerie glow. I suddenly heard heavy knocking on the door.I got up startled from my bed and headed to the door. As I opened the door, the hallway flooded my room with orange light from the lit torches. It was Artemisia."Forgive my rudeness Sephora but it is first moonlight."I nodded at her. It was time.Sephora's POVI walked outside and the moon was bright and it's glow bathed the entire land. The sisters were all ready. Artemisia walked up to me from behind and handed me the white veil that I was meant to put on. I smiled and took it from her and covered my long flowing brown hair. We couldn't proceed, however, without Kali.I didn't have to wait too long as she soon appeared. The moon light made her look even more mysterious as her black mist intertwined with the moon's bluish glow."Sephora, are you ready?"I nodded. Could I 'not be ready'?"Yes Mistress Kali."There was nothing left to do. Kali gave me a flaming torch and I walked infront of the procession. As we took a step, I would light the torches that the sisters had set up that led all the way to the waters of the Lunaria. As I lighted each torch, the path grew brighter and brighter and the sky was set alight with the moon's glow and fire. I was filled with anxiety and excitement. I couldn't wait to meet the new Suprema. H
Sequoia's POV I crept around the pack house with Niylah following me quietly behind. The house was quiet and Sephora was not around. Niylah was nervous and she tried to stop me. She was always such a sticker for the rules. Everyone thought her to be the most disciplined wolf of our time."Sequoia, we need to stop this. We might get caught."I hushed her and continued to creap around. I knew that sister Sephora was hiding something from me. I was seventeen and she had been really sneaky and secretive. She was always hiding stuff and talking in whispers to sister Artemisia. I hated Artemisia. She had this cruel look in her eyes and she was always very hard on me, especially when we trained. Having her take the fighting lesson was like living a nightmare. I was never good enough for her.Suddenly, Niylah grabbed my arm."Sequoia stop this!" she said in a tense whisper. "Sephora will catch us sneaking around and you know how mad she will be."I sighed and looked back at Niylah. She was
Sequoia's POVWe walked out of the pack house into the warm sun. I carried the spears and was significantly slower than Sephora. Her strides were long and prideful and I scurried to her side."Sister Sephora, where are we going?"She said nothing to me and simply took one of the spears from my hands and we pressed on. As we walked, the other sisters stared at us and I could decifer sneaky whispers. They were always whispering behind my back. I never really paid attention but now, I knew something was wrong. We disappeared into the forest and the greenery took over. The flowers here bloomed with elegance and beauty. The red and purple swayed in the wind like candles in the windy night. We passed a stream and I stopped briefly to look at the little fish swim against the current. It looked so magical though I had been in here many..."Sequoia, you are behind. Come."Sephora called me and I walked up to catch her. Soon we reached a clearing and she set the tip of her spear into the groun
Sephora's POVThe walk was quiet and I could feel Sequoia's eyes on me. I was deeply troubled but I did not look at her, instead, I turned my attention to the flowers in the field. They were beautiful, blazing with colour, just like Sequoia's fire, like 'my' fire. We continued to walk to the pack house and there was still a silence between us and yet in the silence, I could still hear the many questions of Sequoia's heart. There was still so much to tell her but she couldn't know about them yet.As we approached, Artemisia walked up to us and by her side was Niylah. She looked quite tired but happy all the same."I take it that you two had a nice day."Niylah was itching to say so much but Artemisia restrained her."It was good," said Artemisia flatly. I smiled at Artemisia."You need to lighten up, sister. How about we all go and eat together?"We walked inside and found the table already set. I was surprised because I had not asked anyone to set the meal yet. Artemisia turned to m
Sequoia's POV"Niylah! Wait up! Stop! Your Suprema commands you!" I ran after her, panting, but she was quick, dodging through the trees and soon she disappeared into the dark. The mokk wasn't bright enough to see where she went and instead it casted eerie shadows on everything that it's light touched. I stopped on a rock to rest. I knew she was around here somewhere, watching me, waiting for me to be off guard so that she could pounce on me, like she always did.I had a bright idea and immediately shifted into my wolf, my bright orange and red flames filled the clearing I was in with light. The shadows were pushed back andy light burnt bright into the night, rivaling that of the moon's.I heard a twig snap and I turned sharply around but there was no one. Suddenly I felt a presence but I was too slow to get out of the way. Niylah emerged from he hiding place and had pounced on me, pinning me to the ground. She too was in her wolf form. Her eyes were a deep blue, her white coat patte
Sequoia's POVI looked at Mistress Kali stunned. Niylah looked at me and shrugged. There was nothing else to do. We sat beside Kali and watched the petals. They just sat there, no movement at all.Kali closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The gentle breeze began to pick up and suddenly, the petals moved with the current. We all watched and soon Kali urged us to stand up and follow the petals as they flowed down the stream. The petals danced, swirling and criss-crossing each other elegantly but never touching. It was beautiful, mesmerizing. Niylah smiled at me as we watched the petals flow down with grace. The winds soon began to pick up and something blew across my cheek. It was a split second and then I saw it: a blue petal. It floated down into the stream and danced next to mine and Niylah's. It was an intricate dance but soon Niylah's petal got left behind and mine was left dancing with the blue petal. It continued for a while until it reached the rapids of the river. The curre
Sephora's POVWe were up early, before the sun and Sequoia walked slowly and sleepily behind me."Quicken the pace Sequoia. You are behind and we have a long way to go." I walked faster and listened to Sequoia's footsteps behind me. She had quickened her pace but was still yards behind. She had better start getting used to waking up this early because we were going to be training this early every day.I soon reached the base of my favorite cliff; the cliff that overlooked the land. I turned and saw Sequoia running after me. I smiled and immediately began to climb its steep sides.By the time Sequoia had reached the base, I was already halfway to the top."Sister Sephora, what are you doing?"I smiled and shouted to her from the top"It's part of your training! Now start climbing! There is a treasure at the top!"I continued to climb and soon I could hear claws scratching the rock face below me. Sequoia had started her climb. I smiled and climbed faster. I was taken here by my predece
Sequoiaâs POVSephora pounced at me and I jumped out of the way again. My bright orange fire burnt powerfully around me. I manipulated the flames to burn brighter, to discourage Sephora's madness. What had come over her? Why was she fighting me.I heard a snarl behind me and soon I was pinned to the ground. My flames dimmed and Sephora placed a paw on my face.âFight! Fight like you mean it!" âGet off!" I kicked her off and she slammed into the rock face of the cliff. I stood up, my eyes narrowed down on her and my breathing was frantic.I wasn't going to fight her. I wasn't going to fight my ownâŚâArrgghh!" A bolder was hurled towards me. I was barely able to get out of the way when a sharp rock piece scratched my face.âAhh!" I staggered, confused by the pain and the sight of my own blood stained the grey rock beneath my feet a lively scarlet.I was petrified. IâŚI was hurt. Sephora hurt me. She really did hurt me.I looked up at her. The fury in her eyes was terrifying. In mere
Sephora's POV âSequoia! No! What are you doing?" I stood, hidden by the cover of the green foliage, and watched her talking to a group of strange creatures that surrounded her. They were tall and muscular, nothing like any of our sisters. They had no breasts, and their hair was short, lacking silkiness, and didn't flow in the wind. They surrounded Sequoia and spoke to her. Her smile grew as she talked back to them. Their hard and chiseled facial features hid the evil they harboured in their hearts.âSequoia!" I tried to step forward, to free her from their seduction, but I was stopped by an invisible barrier.I banged on it, but it didn't give way. Tears filled my eyes as I watched her being led astray by these strange creatures.âSequoia! Get away from them! They are evil!" But only I could hear the sound of my voice. She was lost in their talk which was carried by their deep, unearthly voices.I watched in agony as one of the creatures behind her pulled out a knife. My heart sha
Sequoia's POV I sat outside waiting. I watched the sun going down over the horizon, and the pitch blackness of night slowly began to spread its black tarp over the sky.Like a signal, lights in the distance began to flicker as flame torches came to life and campfires were built around every home. The wind rushed gently through my hair. The air was crisp and cold. I took a deep breath and felt my lungs being filled with refreshing air.The night slowly continued its siege and my eyes never left the path that Sephora would walk down on when she came back. Why was she so late? What was Kali even saying to her that would make her stay out this late?I began to worry. The last time she came back like this, she was in a terrible state. I shuddered as I remembered her raw and injured back, the pain on her face and he smiled that held back her groans of agony.I sighed. I hoped she would come back soon, or else I would track her down.âSequoia, are you still there?" I didn't answer the que
Sephora's POV I walked back through the forest with Sequoia silent by my side. I looked at her eyes and saw the dulled color in them: the fire in her had been drained.I could tell the spar against Niylah had made her weary and my words hadn't fully sunken in yet.âCheer up, Sequoia. I presume that the Goddess loves to see a smile on her face." She looked up at me but soon looked away. I could tell that a thousand questions were burning in her mind and it hurt me to not be able to tell her.My back was still throbbing. The pain that was shooting through me was immense. Artemisia's ointment only did so much to make it better.I sighed. I didn't think that the Goddess was cruel in her judgment. These were just how we lived, these were the things that we did to keep our people alive. The old ways had to be respected, regardless.I slipped into my mind and accessed Sequoia. She was stronger now but not nearly as ready as I needed her to be to take me on, to end myâŚI needed to soar with
Sequoia's POV I was up with the sun but I was frantic. There was a chill that ran through the house. Sephora was gone. Her bed was cold and so was the lamp stand. I tried to get myself under control.I saw her yesterday. She was talking with Artemisia. She asked Niylah to take me inside.I woke up and saw Artemisia but there was no sign of Sephora. I had asked her where she was but she said nothing. She walked away from me without a word. I felt my heart give way. IâŚâSequoia!" That was Niylah's voice. I felt life return to me and I dashed toward her loud voice. My heart was still thumping wildly.I reached the front door and there I saw her.Artemisia was holding her, supporting her as she walked with a slight limp. Her skin was covered with blood that seemed to drip from her back. She was in pain but as soon as she locked eyes with me, she rebuffed Artemisia's help and smiled at me.âSequoiaâŚâI couldn't contain myself and dashed towards her. Artemisia glared at me but I ignored
Sephora's POVI was at home pacing. Where was she? I told her to be home before dark.I was overwhelmed with panic. I was too hard on her. I shouldn't have said those things to her.I heard the sound of footsteps come from upstairs.âNiylah, did you see her?" âNo sister. I didn'tâŚ" She stopped mid-sentence and I followed her gaze. My heart skipped a beat and in the faint light of the lanterns, I saw a pair of bright orange eyes.âSequoia?" I dashed out towards her. I was relieved that she was safe. My eyes were moist with tears. What would I have done if something happened to her.âSequoia, I was soâŚâShe stopped and fell to her knees. In the light of the dimly lit lantern, I could see the tears in her bright orange eyes."Sequoia? WhatâŚ?" She bowed her face to the ground. Her voice was hoarse and choked my tears that she struggled to hold back.âForgive me, Sister. I broke my promise to you. I let you down. I accept my failure." My heart was moved. I felt guilty. I was wrong to
