Sephora's POV “Sisters! Today we train! We must strengthen our bodies, minds and souls! The power the Goddess gives us must not be wasted!”My sister's voices filled the air, carried by the wind as they reached the furthest ends of the pack.Artemisia stepped forward. I smiled; it had been ages since I had seen her in her gear: Her bronze chest plate, dazzling with bright blue jewels, polished by Lunaria’s waters and blessed by the Goddess herself. Her spear was in her hand. Ornate and delicate but deadly in the hands of an expert like herself, its tip reflecting the early morning sun. Regal Artemisia.“Separate yourselves!" Her voice was loud and rumbling, commanding respect as the sisters separated themselves according to their abilities.Niylah stood in front of the water wolves, her small beautiful frame and bright blue eyes reflecting the sun's light as she stood at attention in her gear. She was a fine piece. Artemisia had outdone herself. If only…I turned to Sephora, the on
Sephora:Chapter 18 Sephora: The sun had barely graced the horizon, and yet, I could still hear her. Her fire flickered in the darkness, reflected by the tip of her spear, which she hadn’t set down since the previous evening. I could still remember the look on Niylah’s face when Sequoia refused to eat dinner, picked up her spear and walked out into the cold night. Since then, her fire had been burning, illuminating the night, only stopping for brief minutes to rest. She didn’t take her loss very well. The disappointment was etched into her soul, and I couldn’t blame her. But this–training herself till exhaustion–was not the way. Food, rest, the Goddess had created them for a reason. As I lay in my bed, I watched my window be illuminated by the orange of her flame. Compared to when she had started yesterday, it has severely weakened, flickering like a weak fire starved of wood. I couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted her to be ready for the rites but this… I had to deal with this.
Sephora's POV I stood on the ledge of the cliff and watched the pack. The night sky was an inky black and moon was a crescent. In a few days, it would be a full moon. A new lunar month and a new child to be born in to the pack."The land is beautiful, Suprema Sephora."I was startled and looked behind me. A lady walked up behind me, half hidden by the dark but soon the light of the moon revealed her face. It was Kali. I relaxed and resumed my gazing. It was getting lonely and I would really appreciate her company. We stood silently side by side and took in the magnificent view was as the light of the crescent moon bathed the lands below."Your heart is heavy."I looked at her. How did she know? Was it that obvious?"Yes Kali," said I with a sigh. I couldn't lie to her. It would never work anyway."Your reign as Suprema might soon end in a few days. But then again, your successor might been born on another full moon."I looked at the shining crescent moon. The winds did not lie."No K
Sephora's POV I walked outside and into the glorious sun. I walked among my people and soon, the kids were swarming all over me. They pounced on me and I fell down playfully. They were simply a delight."Suprema Sephora, look what I can do."The young girl shifted into her wolf and closed her eyes. A pebble on the ground began to levitate and I picked it from mid air."Wonderful little one. If you keep practicing, you shall be a powerful wolf."The little girl shifted back and the others around playfully swarmed on her."You are such a show off."I got off the ground and left the little ones to their game. My wolf pack was a magical one. We had all been born from the waters of the Lunaria stream under the essence of the full moon. As we were bestowed with their wolf, we were each given a unique element to possess. The little child had definitely been given the gift of the earth. We were also well trained in hand to hand combat and I could see some older wolves training. I stopped to
Sephora's POVFour days came sooner than I thought. The entire pack was buzzing with activity. The sisiters no longer called me the Suprema and the little ones did the same. Today was finally the day. The new Suprema was going to be born. Her birth would mark my death and the end of my journey in this world. It was my duty to train her and after, I would pass away by her hand when she caeme of age. That was how the change of power worked in Mystic Shadow. No one could question it.Artemisia stood close by my side all day. I could feel her worry. Though it woud take another eighteen years for me to get my successor ready, time seemed to move faster when one knew that her days were numbered.Torch stands were erected as they would guide the path to the waters of the mystical stream. Fire was the elemnt of the Suprema alone. No one else had her element. The day seemed to move too slowy for me. I sat on my little cliff looking at the sky and watching my sisters prepare for the child. Arte
Sephora's POVI walked outside and the moon was bright and it's glow bathed the entire land. The sisters were all ready. Artemisia walked up to me from behind and handed me the white veil that I was meant to put on. I smiled and took it from her and covered my long flowing brown hair. We couldn't proceed, however, without Kali.I didn't have to wait too long as she soon appeared. The moon light made her look even more mysterious as her black mist intertwined with the moon's bluish glow."Sephora, are you ready?"I nodded. Could I 'not be ready'?"Yes Mistress Kali."There was nothing left to do. Kali gave me a flaming torch and I walked infront of the procession. As we took a step, I would light the torches that the sisters had set up that led all the way to the waters of the Lunaria. As I lighted each torch, the path grew brighter and brighter and the sky was set alight with the moon's glow and fire. I was filled with anxiety and excitement. I couldn't wait to meet the new Suprema. H
Sequoia's POV I crept around the pack house with Niylah following me quietly behind. The house was quiet and Sephora was not around. Niylah was nervous and she tried to stop me. She was always such a sticker for the rules. Everyone thought her to be the most disciplined wolf of our time."Sequoia, we need to stop this. We might get caught."I hushed her and continued to creap around. I knew that sister Sephora was hiding something from me. I was seventeen and she had been really sneaky and secretive. She was always hiding stuff and talking in whispers to sister Artemisia. I hated Artemisia. She had this cruel look in her eyes and she was always very hard on me, especially when we trained. Having her take the fighting lesson was like living a nightmare. I was never good enough for her.Suddenly, Niylah grabbed my arm."Sequoia stop this!" she said in a tense whisper. "Sephora will catch us sneaking around and you know how mad she will be."I sighed and looked back at Niylah. She was
Sequoia's POVWe walked out of the pack house into the warm sun. I carried the spears and was significantly slower than Sephora. Her strides were long and prideful and I scurried to her side."Sister Sephora, where are we going?"She said nothing to me and simply took one of the spears from my hands and we pressed on. As we walked, the other sisters stared at us and I could decifer sneaky whispers. They were always whispering behind my back. I never really paid attention but now, I knew something was wrong. We disappeared into the forest and the greenery took over. The flowers here bloomed with elegance and beauty. The red and purple swayed in the wind like candles in the windy night. We passed a stream and I stopped briefly to look at the little fish swim against the current. It looked so magical though I had been in here many..."Sequoia, you are behind. Come."Sephora called me and I walked up to catch her. Soon we reached a clearing and she set the tip of her spear into the groun

Sephora's POV “Sequoia! No! What are you doing?" I stood, hidden by the cover of the green foliage, and watched her talking to a group of strange creatures that surrounded her. They were tall and muscular, nothing like any of our sisters. They had no breasts, and their hair was short, lacking silkiness, and didn't flow in the wind. They surrounded Sequoia and spoke to her. Her smile grew as she talked back to them. Their hard and chiseled facial features hid the evil they harboured in their hearts.“Sequoia!" I tried to step forward, to free her from their seduction, but I was stopped by an invisible barrier.I banged on it, but it didn't give way. Tears filled my eyes as I watched her being led astray by these strange creatures.“Sequoia! Get away from them! They are evil!" But only I could hear the sound of my voice. She was lost in their talk which was carried by their deep, unearthly voices.I watched in agony as one of the creatures behind her pulled out a knife. My heart sha
Sequoia's POV I sat outside waiting. I watched the sun going down over the horizon, and the pitch blackness of night slowly began to spread its black tarp over the sky.Like a signal, lights in the distance began to flicker as flame torches came to life and campfires were built around every home. The wind rushed gently through my hair. The air was crisp and cold. I took a deep breath and felt my lungs being filled with refreshing air.The night slowly continued its siege and my eyes never left the path that Sephora would walk down on when she came back. Why was she so late? What was Kali even saying to her that would make her stay out this late?I began to worry. The last time she came back like this, she was in a terrible state. I shuddered as I remembered her raw and injured back, the pain on her face and he smiled that held back her groans of agony.I sighed. I hoped she would come back soon, or else I would track her down.“Sequoia, are you still there?" I didn't answer the que
Sephora's POV I walked back through the forest with Sequoia silent by my side. I looked at her eyes and saw the dulled color in them: the fire in her had been drained.I could tell the spar against Niylah had made her weary and my words hadn't fully sunken in yet.“Cheer up, Sequoia. I presume that the Goddess loves to see a smile on her face." She looked up at me but soon looked away. I could tell that a thousand questions were burning in her mind and it hurt me to not be able to tell her.My back was still throbbing. The pain that was shooting through me was immense. Artemisia's ointment only did so much to make it better.I sighed. I didn't think that the Goddess was cruel in her judgment. These were just how we lived, these were the things that we did to keep our people alive. The old ways had to be respected, regardless.I slipped into my mind and accessed Sequoia. She was stronger now but not nearly as ready as I needed her to be to take me on, to end my…I needed to soar with
Sequoia's POV I was up with the sun but I was frantic. There was a chill that ran through the house. Sephora was gone. Her bed was cold and so was the lamp stand. I tried to get myself under control.I saw her yesterday. She was talking with Artemisia. She asked Niylah to take me inside.I woke up and saw Artemisia but there was no sign of Sephora. I had asked her where she was but she said nothing. She walked away from me without a word. I felt my heart give way. I…“Sequoia!" That was Niylah's voice. I felt life return to me and I dashed toward her loud voice. My heart was still thumping wildly.I reached the front door and there I saw her.Artemisia was holding her, supporting her as she walked with a slight limp. Her skin was covered with blood that seemed to drip from her back. She was in pain but as soon as she locked eyes with me, she rebuffed Artemisia's help and smiled at me.“Sequoia…”I couldn't contain myself and dashed towards her. Artemisia glared at me but I ignored
Sephora's POVI was at home pacing. Where was she? I told her to be home before dark.I was overwhelmed with panic. I was too hard on her. I shouldn't have said those things to her.I heard the sound of footsteps come from upstairs.“Niylah, did you see her?" “No sister. I didn't…" She stopped mid-sentence and I followed her gaze. My heart skipped a beat and in the faint light of the lanterns, I saw a pair of bright orange eyes.“Sequoia?" I dashed out towards her. I was relieved that she was safe. My eyes were moist with tears. What would I have done if something happened to her.“Sequoia, I was so…”She stopped and fell to her knees. In the light of the dimly lit lantern, I could see the tears in her bright orange eyes."Sequoia? What…?" She bowed her face to the ground. Her voice was hoarse and choked my tears that she struggled to hold back.“Forgive me, Sister. I broke my promise to you. I let you down. I accept my failure." My heart was moved. I felt guilty. I was wrong to
Sequoia’s POVSephora pounced at me and I jumped out of the way again. My bright orange fire burnt powerfully around me. I manipulated the flames to burn brighter, to discourage Sephora's madness. What had come over her? Why was she fighting me.I heard a snarl behind me and soon I was pinned to the ground. My flames dimmed and Sephora placed a paw on my face.“Fight! Fight like you mean it!" “Get off!" I kicked her off and she slammed into the rock face of the cliff. I stood up, my eyes narrowed down on her and my breathing was frantic.I wasn't going to fight her. I wasn't going to fight my own…“Arrgghh!" A bolder was hurled towards me. I was barely able to get out of the way when a sharp rock piece scratched my face.“Ahh!" I staggered, confused by the pain and the sight of my own blood stained the grey rock beneath my feet a lively scarlet.I was petrified. I…I was hurt. Sephora hurt me. She really did hurt me.I looked up at her. The fury in her eyes was terrifying. In mere
Sephora's POVWe were up early, before the sun and Sequoia walked slowly and sleepily behind me."Quicken the pace Sequoia. You are behind and we have a long way to go." I walked faster and listened to Sequoia's footsteps behind me. She had quickened her pace but was still yards behind. She had better start getting used to waking up this early because we were going to be training this early every day.I soon reached the base of my favorite cliff; the cliff that overlooked the land. I turned and saw Sequoia running after me. I smiled and immediately began to climb its steep sides.By the time Sequoia had reached the base, I was already halfway to the top."Sister Sephora, what are you doing?"I smiled and shouted to her from the top"It's part of your training! Now start climbing! There is a treasure at the top!"I continued to climb and soon I could hear claws scratching the rock face below me. Sequoia had started her climb. I smiled and climbed faster. I was taken here by my predece
