“We had sex again and I don't know how it happened,” Aurora said, clutching the blanket around her trembling frame, it was her only thing keeping her from being naked as she felt. The words tasted bitter, like a heavy lid on her tongue, but she forced them out.
Lightning flashed outside, illuminating her in the dim room. Her hair clung to her damp face, a wild mess, and her feet, bare against the cold floor, felt numb.
“Wait... what?!” Easton’s voice cut through the silence, his wide eyes flicking to the thin nightgown peeking from beneath the blanket. His expression darkened.
“That’s—”
“Phoebe’s,” Aurora finished flatly. Her lips twisted into a bitter smile. “Of course it is.”
Easton clenched his fists. “That bastard—”
“Don’t.” Aurora cut him off, shaking her head. Her gaze dropped to the floor as she tried to blink back her tears. “I don’t need you defending me. Not from him. Not now.”
Her voice cracked, but she swallowed the lump in her throat and kept speaking. “He threw it at me. Told me to get out.”
Easton exhaled sharply, his nostrils flaring as he paced the room. He wanted to say something—anything—that might undo the damage Maverick had inflicted, but words felt useless. The silence between them grew heavier, broken only by the soft rumble of thunder outside.
“And then you called me,” Easton said, his voice softer now.
Aurora nodded, pulling the blanket tighter. “I didn’t know who else to turn to.”
Before Easton could respond, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed in the hallway.
“Of course, you don't,” The voice came before the person and they knew just who it was.
Both of them turned, their gazes snapping toward the door just as Phoebe appeared, she did nothing to hide mocking smile. Beside her was Maverick, his broad shoulders filling the space as his cold, calculating eyes locked onto Aurora.
Easton moved instinctively, stepping in front of Aurora, his body shielding her from their intrusion.
“What the hell do you want?” he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.
Phoebe flinched for a moment before she laughed venomously.
“Relax, Easton. We’re just here to check on Aurora. After all…” Her eyes flicked to the blanket, the corner of her lips curling. “She had such a memorable night.”
Aurora’s stomach churned, and she averted her gaze, refusing to pay Phoebe any attention which made the woman mildly irritated. But before she could act in it Maverick stepped forward, brushing past Phoebe with an air of authority that made the room feel smaller.
He stopped in front of Aurora, his presence suffocating. For a fleeting moment, she thought she saw something—remorse, hesitation—in his gaze. But it vanished as quickly as it appeared.
Aurora couldn't depict his thoughts like she used to be able to do but she wishes that he would go back to the man she used to know, the man who cared about her and would give her anything and everything. A flick of his stony blue eyes were all she needed to know that it was all her wishful fantasy.
He held out his hand, palm up. “Take these.”
Aurora blinked, her gaze falling to the small pills in his hand. It took her a moment to realize what they were.
“Contraceptives,” he said, his voice devoid of emotion and Aurora almost heard the howl of her non-existent wolf. “I don’t want any mistakes.”
Her breath hitched. The words were a blade, cutting deeper than she thought possible.
Easton scoffed in restrained anger while Aurora's heart stuttered in pain, the tears she was keeping at bay were shining brightly in her eyes now. The only sound she could hear was her uncontrolled thoughts that keep tumbling over one another.
“Mistakes?” Aurora's voice was barely above a whisper. Her hands trembled as she took the pills, the weight of them heavier than anything she had ever carried.
As she stared into his cold eyes, Aurora wondered how they got to this level that the thought of her carrying his pups disgust him so much.
She was his mate, and had been his mate for three years! If he didn't want anything to do with her, why did he accept her as his mate?
Was is just so he could experience endless wave of torture?!
They loved each other so much, what the hell changed?!
Maverick’s expression didn’t waver.
“Take them now, Aurora. While I’m here.”
“Bastard!” Easton exploded, lunging forward, but Maverick caught his fist mid-air, his lycan strength effortlessly stopping the blow.
“It’s Alpha Maverick to you,” he said coldly, shoving Easton back with enough force to send him stumbling.
Aurora’s instincts took over, and she stepped between them, raising a hand to stop Easton from retaliating. She swallowed the pills, the bitterness coating her tongue as her tears threatened to spill over.
Satisfied, Maverick’s gaze raked over her one last time, lingering for a second too long on the borrowed nightgown. His eyes softened for a millisecond, but before she could decipher it, he turned and walked away, Phoebe quickly rushed after him.
The door slammed shut behind them, leaving a suffocating silence behind.
---
Easton moved toward her, his expression a mixture of anger and heartbreak. “Aurora…”
She shook her head, cutting him off. “I’m fine.” Her voice was barely steady, a whisper that didn’t convince either of them.
“You’re not,” Easton said firmly, his hands gripping her shoulders gently but insistently. “He can’t keep doing this to you. You deserve better.”
Aurora laughed bitterly, the sound hollow. “Deserve better? I’m his mate, Easton. The Moon Goddess herself paired us. This—” She gestured vaguely to the empty room, to the pills she had just swallowed, to the invisible chains binding her to Maverick. “This is what I deserve.”
“No,” Easton said, his voice hardening. “This is what he’s making you believe you deserve. There’s a difference.”
Aurora didn’t reply. She couldn’t find the words to argue, to agree, or to even admit that a part of her still hoped for Maverick to turn back into the man she once knew.
Thunder rumbled again, and Aurora finally let the tears fall, her shoulders shaking as Easton pulled her into a hug. For now, in his arms, she allowed herself to break, even if just for a moment.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Aurora adjusted her grip on the glass of champagne, her fingers cold against the smooth surface. The laughter and chatter of the ceremony filled the air, but it all felt distant, muffled by the storm of thoughts raging in her head.
From across the field, she could see him. Maverick. Standing tall and proud, his arm resting lightly on Phoebe’s waist as he introduced her to the guests. They looked every bit the perfect couple, their smiles practiced and charming.
It was supposed to be her standing beside him.
Aurora blinked hard, forcing back the tears threatening to spill. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction—not here, not now.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Easton said softly, his voice pulling her from her thoughts.
Easton never agreed to Aurora’s and Maverick's relationship, he and Alec—Maverick’s best friend, had been against it since they started dating in secret seven years ago. He had always been sceptical of what kind of relationship that could exist between them, a runt and the next Alpha wasn't something the pack council supported.
But he had little say about it, they had been friends since they were thirteen, before Easton even dreamt of meeting Aurora. The secrecy with which they carried out their plans as friends and lovers had been embedded deeply in them and it was their normal life and daily routine.
She turned to him, her expression blank. “I’m the Luna, Easton. This is where I belong.”
“No, you’re supposed to be the Luna,” he corrected, his tone sharp with frustration. “But he’s made it painfully clear he doesn’t see you as that. Hell, he doesn’t even treat you like a pack member, let alone his mate.”
Aurora’s gaze dropped to the ground. She knew he was right.
All through their time as lovers, none of them feared the punishments dished to them for abruptly going missing— the loads of paperworks dumped on him and the whips of her stepfather that tore her back meant nothing. It was just a price for their scarlet love.
All they had to do was wait till the mate awakening ceremony where Maverick would proclaim Aurora the Luna, shut everyone else up and no one would dare look down on her.
But now that the time came, Maverick had stripped her of any real authority as Luna, leaving her in a position that was nothing more than a title. She was the Luna in name only, a ghost was better when compared to her.
“I can’t leave,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “If I do, I lose what little connection I have left to him.”
Easton sighed, his jaw tightening as he fought back his anger. “No you can. You just don't—”
He stopped short, his words hanging in the air as Maverick and Phoebe approached. Aurora’s heart clenched at the sight of them together, the perfect picture of unity and power.
Phoebe’s smile was as sweet as poison. “Aurora, darling. You look… well.” Her eyes flicked over Aurora’s plain dress, her lips twitching with amusement. “But don't sulk in the corner for too long, people might forget you still exist.”
“You can keep that advice for yourself, don't stomp around too much. There are still a lot of people who know that you are just the side chick,” Aurora replies calmly and Phoebe bit her lips in anger, remembering that the title she wanted most was still Aurora's.
Maverick’s gaze barely touched her before shifting to Easton. “Is there a reason you’re standing so close to my mate?” he asked, his voice cold and clipped.
Easton didn’t flinch. “Maybe because you’re too busy parading someone else around to care about her.”
The tension was thick in the air.
For a moment, Aurora thought Maverick might lash out, but he didn’t. Instead, he stepped closer to her, his presence overwhelming as he leaned in.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said quietly, his tone devoid of emotion. “This isn’t your place anymore.”
Aurora’s breath hitched, but she forced herself to meet his gaze. “I’m the Luna. It’s exactly where I should be.”
Maverick’s jaw tightened and he clenched his fist in irritation at her stubbornness, but before he could respond, Phoebe looped her arm through his. “Come on, darling,” she purred, her eyes glinting with satisfaction. “We have more guests to greet.”
He hesitated for a fraction of a second, his gaze lingering on Aurora. Then he turned and walked away, leaving her standing in the suffocating silence of their absence.
---
Easton let out a low curse. “He’s unbelievable.”
Aurora didn’t respond. She felt numb, the weight of Maverick’s words was crushing her.
“You don’t have to do this, you know,” Easton said, his voice softer now.
She turned to him, her eyes glistening. “What choice do I have, Easton? He’s my mate. This bond—it’s not something I can just walk away from.”
“You could leave this place,” he said, his tone firm. “Start over somewhere else. Hell, I’d go with you if that’s what it takes.”
Aurora shook her head, a bitter smile tugging at her lips. “I know what you are trying to say,” her tone was flat but her eyes were stormy. “And you are probably right but it doesn't change anything. The pain. It doesn’t go away.”
Easton reached out, his hand brushing against hers. “Then let me help you carry it.”
The sincerity in his voice nearly broke her. She wanted to believe him, to let herself lean on him completely. But she knew it wouldn’t be fair. Not to him, and not to herself.
“Thank you,” she said quietly, pulling her hand away. “But this is something I have to bear alone.”
Easton looked like he wanted to argue, but he didn’t. Instead, he stepped closer, his presence grounding her in a way she didn’t realize she needed.
“If he lays another hand on you, I’ll make sure that he regrets it,” he said finally, his voice low and steady.
Aurora didn’t reply. She couldn’t. The pain and exhaustion were too much, and all she wanted was to get through the rest of the ceremony without breaking completely.
As the night wore on, Aurora stood in the shadows, watching Maverick and Phoebe bask in the adoration of their pack. She felt invisible, a ghost haunting the edges of her own life.
But she wanted to believe that one day, she would find a way to reclaim herself. To rise from the ashes of everything Maverick had destroyed.
One day, she would be whole again.
Aurora flinched at the shrill voice behind her.“Move out of my way, bitch!” Tessie barked, her black eyes blazing with disdain. Her sneer curled into something colder as she added, “And keep your cursed bad luck out of my path.”Aurora turned slowly, her calm gaze meeting Tessie’s glare. Before she could respond, another voice chimed in.“Mom’s going to kill you for letting her stand so close, Tess,” Jennie sneered. “The pack’s still celebrating that a half-witch like her didn't end up being the Luna, thanks to Alpha's quick choice of our perfect sister.”“Shut it, Jennie!” Tessie snapped and turned back to Aurora. “Well? Are you deaf now? Get out of the way!”The tension around them thickened as curious eyes from the field began to drift their way. Aurora felt their glares, their whispers, the same hostility she’d endured her entire life.It was nothing new.Her voice was unnervingly calm as she replied. “There’s no need to yell. Being a werewolf doesn’t mean you have to act like an
Remind me why we are still not out of this place," Easton said."Luna might be needed anytime. I have to be present," Aurora stated nonchalantly. Easton glared at her and immediately knew she wasn’t as okay as she pretended to be. Even after the spectacle on the field, she had taken a moment to herself but still insisted they return to the halls because of her duties.Duties for a position Maverick had just given to Phoebe in front of nearly everyone in the pack."That asshole," Easton muttered as they stood at the far end of the hall. There was no one around, and the dim light shrouded them in shadows. Hidden from plain view, they leaned against each other."He’s been like this ever since the mate awakening ceremony," Easton said, glaring at Maverick, who stood on stage giving a speech. A smile rested on Maverick’s lips as if he hadn’t just shattered someone’s world with his words and actions. "The petty bastard even used you not showing up as an excuse to reject you."Aurora’s mind d
Aurora staggered for a bit before she managed to stand on her feet perfectly. Everyone present was shocked that she could even stand.“I’ve endured too much in this pack to stay another second. Hypocritical leaders, selfish members, and you—my mate—who failed me most. Keep your lies, your cruelty, and your title. I’m done.” Her eyes are cold and unfeeling. “All of you can dive headfirst into hell. I’m leaving this shithole of yours, and you can keep it for the rest of your life!” she spat angrily, despite the immense pain she felt. Turning on her heel, she began to walk away. Easton immediately followed her.Maverick also left the scene, his expression pained as he watched Aurora walk away. He seemed to have difficulty breathing; his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands were trembling. But no one noticed him leave. The pack councils and members attempted to follow her, but Alec shook his head at them, and they reluctantly stood down, watching as Aurora left the field—out of Moonlight Pac
How many people did it take for an unwarranted headache to sizzle up in one’s head and prick at one’s nerves? That had been the question the women Aurora was out in the woods with had asked each other just moments before. They’d all had different answers, and the numbers varied widely, but one thing united them despite their differences:For Aurora, there was no number. No matter how many people it took, no matter how irritating or intimidating they were, no one could shake the rock that was Aurora. She had agreed with a smile on her lips. How wrong they had been.Aurora had never thought she would see him again. They might cross paths someday, but it wasn’t supposed to be now. And even if they did meet, she wasn’t supposed to feel anything. But as she looked at his face, she froze. A lump rose in her throat, a barricade of conflicting emotions she hadn’t felt in the last five years crashing over her—emotions she had thought locked away. They bubbled to the surface as his hypnotizing b
Maverick gave a subtle mental nod when Layla pointed out that Aurora had been using a scent-masking spell since entering the room. It finally made sense. That was why he couldn’t smell her when she walked in or even now. But when Aurora muttered something under her breath, her scent broke through the spell, overwhelming his senses. The scent hit him all at once—too much, too fast. She smelled like the ocean breeze, the kind that brushed against your skin while standing by the sea with a seashell in hand. It was a scent he had always liked. For a werewolf like him, who spent most of his time in the woods, forests, and small towns, her scent was a welcome change. It calmed him. But as it teased his heightened senses, it awakened something deeper. His wolf stirred, thrilled by the possibility of finding another mate. Yet that joy dimmed almost instantly, replaced by anguish. His wolf recognized her. This was the same soul that had once hurt them, the same one they had broken the bond with
Layla had led them from their room that morning. Maverick and Alec had just finished dressing when the bubbly woman had knocked on their door. She had said that she couldn’t let them stay cooped up inside their room while she could show them the beauty of their pack.“Is it really necessary that you come and get us so early in the morning?” Alec had grumbled, and Layla bopped her head.“Of course. It is absolutely necessary. You people have already woken up and gotten dressed, and all you would do is stare at your phones and laptops in your room before we had to talk again at the meeting.” She replied with a wide smile.“And does it have to be only us? There are others too.” Alec said, and Layla rolled her eyes at him.“You are the ones I find most likable among them all, except for that beautiful brunette and her sidekick, of course, but a woman must get her beauty sleep. I heard she’s the pack's doctor. She must have a lot on her hands already, poor thing must study till late at nigh
“Fucking Zach delayed the documentation of the contract. Apparently, there was some glitch in the system, so Alpha Maverick and his representative had to stay a few more days. Tell your freaking Beta to act like one, Easton!” Layla snapped, her voice dripping with irritation. Aurora rolled her eyes at the drama queen, while Easton ignored her completely, engrossed in the video game on his phone.A lot had changed over the years, but not Easton’s love for games. He could sit with that phone from morning till night without growing bored. Hilton didn’t discourage him, either—in fact, he often joined in. Aurora often wondered how they managed to get anything done as the Alpha and Delta of the rogue pack.“Don’t you like their presence here?” Hilton asked casually, not even glancing up from where he sat, while Aurora sank comfortably into the beanbag.“I definitely don’t,” Easton muttered, earning a glare from Layla.“Of course you don’t, but I do. Why wouldn’t I like that hunk parading aro
Maverick stared at all the members of the supposedly ‘cruel’ pack and tried to pin that word with the image and actions of the people all around him, but it didn’t make any sense. They were all supposed to have scars when they tried to initiate themselves into the pack, hurting themselves for fun, but here they all were, gathered around a grown man who had tumbled in the field and hurt his toe, as if that wasn’t normal even for humans, let alone werewolves. But these people were rogues—the worst kind of werewolves. The first instinct of others when they saw rogues was to attack, and a lot followed that instinct. Then, they weren’t supposed to be offering sweet cookies to members of a rival pack, not supposed to get chummy with them. Neither were they supposed to be this happy about two of them finding their mates. They practically dragged them to build tents with them, cracking jokes like they had been buddies their entire lives. The kids here—rogues, werewolves, and hybrids—weren’t su
The hall was filled to the brim with grinning pack members who awaited the day’s event. It seemed to them that the satisfaction they have always wanted was making their ways to them.It was the Luna Coronation Ceremony.Aurora was finally going to be officially recognized as the Luna of the Moonlight Pack, while this made a lot of pack members happy, it also made them very busy, it wasn't like they could have their Luna-to-be preparing everything or anything.Sadie was the one that took charge of the event with Sally, both of them ordering workers around, trying to get things rounded up.Out of everyone who was going about, Sally could be said to be the happiest. After resigning to date about the death of their son, both the former Alpha and Sally had alienated themselves from the pack when they heard the demise of Maverick.According to them, seeing the pack reminded them of the wound that would never scar. It was right there and then that Aurora earned the respect of the former Alph
“I am so sorry that she escaped, Aurora.” Mani apologized and Aurora just waved her off.“I told you that it is alright.” Aurora replied. “Besides, you were doing something else when she escaped, we would have been able to find her later but delay might have been very bad in the spell breaking. I really appreciate your help, Mani. Thank you so much.”Mani smiled back at Aurora and nodded. It was nice to see Aurora’s face having another emotion other than the blankness that she had mastered over the years, it was amazing yet shocking how a person could have an effect over another person.Aurora’s eyes have become brighter and she seemed to have found more meaning to life, she clung to Maverick who was sitting beside him and the smile had never left her eyes, it was truly a gratifying thing to watch.“We helped in that matter together,” Daphne said from where she stood. She had spent the night at their house while insisting that the rest of the witch council would be after her head afte
“Were you able to find Maverick?” Easton asked as soon as she was in front of the house, he was talking with Alec about Pack matters and since Ferix was helping him too, it seemed to be urgent.“HI Aurora,” Ferix greeted and she nodded.“We were able to find him and he knows who Phoebe is but he also didn’t want to have anything to do with me.”“Talk about some big misfortune, it is making me want to wring Phoebe’s head.” Ferix snorted.“Me too.” Easton added.“That makes three of us, but I have something to do now,” Aurora said and entered the house.“Isn’t Daphne here?” Aurora stared around the whole place and turned to Regina when she found no sight of the woman she was looking for.“I thought she followed you? Didn’t you go to look for Phoebe and Alpha together?” Regina asked and Aurora sighed. “She told me that you already picked the location or something around that line.”“I had no idea that she followed me but I doubt that she hadn’t run away,” Aurora murmured to herself befor
Maverick stared at Phoebe who had shifted back to human form in devastation and betrayal, he couldn’t even manage anger with the reeling that was going on in his head, though, there was no way to prove it everything that Aurora was saying was true about him was something that clashed and overturned everything that he had always believed in.He was supposed to be an hunter but here he discovered that he belonged to the species that he had been ordering and the woman who he had always thought was his best friend lied about everything to him and was his enemy, a woman who was very desperate and would do anything and everything to keep him by her side.“It is a lie Maverick! You are not a werewolf! Aren’t you supposed to feel your wolf if you were one since all these days? She is your ex, she betrayed you before and would do anything to separate us again,” Phoebe insisted.“Why should I lie about something like that if I have gone to someone that I liked? I wouldn’t be back here looking f
Phoebe stared at Maverick who was walking with slumped shoulder while also carrying Robb on his shoulder, she had suggested that they leave the place as soon as possible but he had refused and told her that Robb had always told him that if he ever died one day, he wanted to be buried at the back of his little place.Damn man was jeopardizing her plan even when he was dead after pushing Maverick to pursue Aurora when he was alive.“Maverick.” She called but he only continued walking ahead.“I don’t want to talk to anyone right now,” Maverick replied and she frowned in anger. It was bad enough that they had to make a stop at their place but now he was even ignoring her, it was draining the energy that would have made her excited that she drove a wedge between him and Aurora. The bitch didn’t even show up and she was sure that Mani would have told him about everything that happened. She stared ahead and a smirk appeared on her lips. Sure, the plan wasn’t working the way she was working b
Maverick searched around the forest with a bit of panic striking his nerve, there was something bad about the nerves that kept crawling up his nerve, it was like danger was just lurking around the corner. It didn’t help matters that neither Cara nor Robb were around, he hadn’t seen Robb since he said that he had to get something from the woods and he had absolutely no idea what was going on.“Maverick!” He heard Cara’s voice in the distance and immediately turned to the direction. “Maverick!”He could see her running towards him and he hurried over to her and that was when he noticed the panic that was on her face.“Cara, what is wrong?” He asked and she tried to regulate her breathing. She huffed for a bit before she started talking breathlessly. “Maverick! Robb is dead!”“What?!” He asked with widened eyes. He moved closer to her and smelled her body before his eyes almost narrowed into slits.“Fucking werewolves!” He growled. “Lead the way!”Cara nodded and the two of them broke in
Daphne hastened her step as soon as she was in a darker part of the alley, she had been having the feeling that someone had been following her as soon as she left the pub and her instinct continued to tell her not to stay and find out who the person was because it was dangerous. She ran and took another corner but she was stopped by something and before she could react, she was punched in the stomach and sent sprawling on the floor. She hated combat the most, she preferred when she wielded her magic so she tried to gather some energy from around her but she found out that she couldn’t do anything of the sort.“Escaping now, aren’t you?” She heard in front of her and saw Mani standing there with her hands folded across her chest.“What the hell do you think that you are doing?” Daphne scoffed. “Do you think that you are something simply because you crossed over to that bitch’s side? I could end her if I wanted.”“Well, you can tell her better than when we meet her,” Mani said plainly a
“What could have made you come to see me tonight?” Daphne asked with a smirk as soon as Phoebe sat down in front of her, they were at the town pub where they usually meet up, it was late at night and both of them were wearing something that covered their face in order not to be recognized.“What else other than the fact that Maverick is almost driving me crazy?” She groaned in annoyance and Daphne raised a brow at her.“Oh? He can make you angry? I thought that you were having the best time of your life?” Daphne asked and Phoebe glared at her but it couldn't be said for a fact whether she saw it because both of them were deep at the darkest corner, the flicker of dim red light reaching them once in a while.“I was, until Aurora appeared out of the blue and now they met and he wouldn’t keep his mouth shut about her for the briefest minute.”“I told you that separating two mated people isn’t going to be easy,” Daphne shrugged and Phoebe glared at her once again.“She was supposed to be
“You would believe who we saw today,” Ferix said and Aurora raised a brow at her.“Who?”“It was Phoebe and Daphne, caught red-handed with her memory because she was talking about you,” Regina replied.“She saw both of you?” Aurora asked Easton and Ferix who nodded.“Yeah. I took Regina along because why not? She wasn’t able to keep her cool when she saw all of us and it was visible in her face that she recognized all of us, she even said my name,” Easton replied. “We were just going to scout out the place of the council but we couldn’t find and decided to come home but we met yours truly on the way and she kept ranting about you being back to take her man.”“Is that bitch high on a big dose of delusions?” Sadie asked with disgust. She remembered the time she had treated and had mistakenly thought she was normal like everyone else, who knew that she was just bat shit crazy. “How is he her man when he is clearly Aurora’s mate?”“Then the big picture is getting clearer. Daphne is one of
