Aurora flinched at the shrill voice behind her.
“Move out of my way, bitch!” Tessie barked, her black eyes blazing with disdain. Her sneer curled into something colder as she added, “And keep your cursed bad luck out of my path.”
Aurora turned slowly, her calm gaze meeting Tessie’s glare. Before she could respond, another voice chimed in.
“Mom’s going to kill you for letting her stand so close, Tess,” Jennie sneered. “The pack’s still celebrating that a half-witch like her didn't end up being the Luna, thanks to Alpha's quick choice of our perfect sister.”
“Shut it, Jennie!” Tessie snapped and turned back to Aurora. “Well? Are you deaf now? Get out of the way!”
The tension around them thickened as curious eyes from the field began to drift their way. Aurora felt their glares, their whispers, the same hostility she’d endured her entire life.
It was nothing new.
Her voice was unnervingly calm as she replied. “There’s no need to yell. Being a werewolf doesn’t mean you have to act like an animal.”
The faintest twitch in Tessie’s lips was the only warning before her gray eyes darkened to red. Jennie stifled a laugh, but neither made a move.
Easton stood a few steps behind Aurora, his arms crossed, watching the exchange. He didn’t interfere—he knew she could handle herself.
Tessie’s shriek cut through the air. “What did you just say?”
Jennie also cut Aurora off before she could talk. “You must that think that are an hotshot because of your position as the Luna, I would let you know that the pack council will give it to our sister soon,”
Aurora tilted her head, unaffected by the growing crowd or their hushed murmurs.
“Does your sister know how much I once meant to Maverick? How he swore under the full moon that he couldn't live without me. That we'd always be together no matter what?”
She glanced at Maverick who was talking to some guest, she was very aware that he could hear what she was saying because of his heightened werewolves sense.
Easton scrunched up his nose in annoyance because of the memory he was well aware of, after all he used to help cover up for them when they sneaked out.
Phoebe eyebrows were furrowed in anger and Aurora didn't miss the nostalgia on Maverick's face and the small pull at the corner of his lips.
Something that only happened when he thought about good, and that made light appear at the back of Aurora's eyes, maybe she still had hope.
Phoebe had moved closer to them with a raised brow and half-smile. “You think that would make him care?” She taunted.
“Would it? I don't know,” Aurora gave a small smirk. “But I know that the same could happen to you too. You might find yourself remembering that you used to walk by his side when he threw you into a dark hole.”
Her words only made Phoebe more irritated, she knew fully well tha Aurora was right but Tessie wasn't willing to remain silent.
“What do you mean? I dare you to say that again, bitch!” Tessie asks sharply and there was an excited buzz among the members of the pack because of the interesting scene that might unfold.
“You heard me. Or has that sharp werewolf hearing of yours gone dull? Your father’s a gamma, and your mother’s a pack warrior. Surely, they passed on b traits more than this.”
The jab landed. Tessie’s cheeks burned with anger, and for a brief moment, the field was silent except for the sound of shifting feet.
“What did you just say about my parents?!” Tessie snarled, her voice trembling with rage.
Before Aurora could respond, another voice cut through the crowd like a blade.
“What’s going on here?”
Aurora froze. She didn’t need to turn to know who it was.
Maverick.
The air around her felt heavier as he approached, Phoebe’s hand looped through his arm. His icy blue eyes scanned the scene briefly before settling on Aurora, his expression unreadable.
“Aurora,” he began, his voice calm but cutting, “why are you causing a scene?”
Aurora blinked, the question hitting her like a slap, what was she even thinking that anything had changed?
“Causing a scene?” Easton stepped forward, his voice sharp. “She wasn’t doing anything. They came to her.”
Maverick’s gaze flicked to Easton for a moment, his expression cold. “It doesn’t matter who started it. As Luna, you should know better than to engage in petty squabbles. The guest would only remember how immature you looked”
Aurora’s breath hitched. The weight of his words pressed down on her chest, but she managed to speak. “So I’m supposed to let them treat me like dirt? Stay silent and take whatever shits that they throw at me?”
Her voice broke slightly, but she didn’t falter. She kept her eyes on Maverick, willing him to see the pain she carried.
His gaze flickered as if he might say something else but he didn't, instead with an unreadable face his response was a dagger. “You should’ve walked away.”
Aurora’s lips trembled, but she forced herself to hold her ground. “You’ve made it clear where you stand. You want Phoebe? Fine. I’ll stay out of your way. But stop expecting me to endure this constant humiliation quietly.”
The words hung in the air, the crowd’s murmurs fading into silence.
Maverick’s expression didn’t change, but for a fleeting second, something flickered in his eyes—regret, hesitation, or something else entirely. Then it was gone, replaced by the same cold detachment she’d grown to expect.
Without another word, he turned away, Phoebe’s arm still clinging to his.
Aurora stood frozen, the weight of every gaze in the field pressing on her. She didn’t cry, didn’t crumble. She wouldn't do that, at least not in front of them.
“Let’s go,” Easton said softly, his hand resting gently on her shoulder.
She nodded, her movements stiff, and together, they walked away from the field. Behind her, the whispers rose again, louder this time.
But she didn’t look back.
---
Aurora barely noticed the whispers behind her as she and Easton left the field. Her heart was pounding, not from fear, but from the humiliation that had seared into her skin like a brand.
Her fingers trembled as she clutched Easton’s arm. “I’m fine,” she muttered, more to herself than him.
“No, you’re not,” Easton replied quietly, his voice steady but protective. “And you shouldn’t have to be.”
They stopped at the edge of the field, away from prying eyes. Aurora leaned against a tree, exhaling a shaky breath.
“I don’t understand how he can just…” Her words trailed off, her throat tightening. She bit her lip to stop the tears from falling. “How can he treat me like this? Like I’m nothing?”
It wasn't advised to mateless wolf to date someone because they might end up not being mates but Maverick was so sure seven years ago. He was hellbent on the fact that they were each other's mate, he had claimed that he knew and felt it deep in his soul. He insisted that they would elope if the worst came.
But it turns out that every single promise was all a big bout of lies.
She didn't see him for just a night, and after that night, she didn't know why but everything changed.
Alec hinted that Maverick saw something and Aurora was in the wrong but no matter how many times she asked she got no response.
Easton crouched in front of her, his dark eyes meeting hers. “Because he’s a coward. He’s too blind to see what he’s losing, and too weak to stand up for what’s right.”
Aurora smiled faintly, though the bitterness in it made her chest ache. “That doesn’t make it hurt any less.”
“No, it doesn’t,” Easton admitted. “But it doesn’t make him right, either.”
Before Aurora could respond, a commotion behind them drew her attention. She turned just in time to see a young girl rushing toward Maverick.
“Alpha!” the girl called, her voice breathless but urgent. “There’s a visitor from an allied pack here. He says he’s here for the gathering.”
Aurora watched as the girl pointed to a tall man standing a few feet away. He was dressed simply, but his bearing was regal, his eyes sharp and calculating. He glanced at her briefly before turning his attention to Maverick.
“Hello, Alpha Maverick. I’m Jasper,” the man said with a courteous bow.
Aurora stiffened as the girl added with a bright smile. “And this is our Luna, Phoebe Brian.”
The words hung in the air like a bomb waiting to explode.
Aurora’s breath caught, her heart sinking as she glanced at Maverick. His expression didn’t shift, his icy demeanor holding firm.
The silence was unbearable. Would he deny it? Correct the girl? Or would he let it stand, as he always did?
Maverick finally nodded at Jasper, his tone neutral. “Welcome, Jasper. If you follow me, we can discuss further inside.” He glanced at Phoebe, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Phoebe, come with me.”
Aurora felt the world tilt.
Her chest tightened as the humiliation settled in, deeper and sharper than before. He didn’t deny it. He didn’t correct her. He just let them all believe that Phoebe was his chosen mate.
Her vision blurred, but she forced herself to stay upright. She couldn’t break here—not in front of them.
“Aurora,” Easton said gently, his voice pulling her back to reality. He placed a hand on her shoulder, guiding her away from the stars, the whispers, and the pity she hated so much.
She let him lead her, her thoughts a swirling storm. She’d thought she’d hit rock bottom before, but this…this was a new depth entirely.
As they reached the edge of the forest, Aurora stopped, turning back to glance at the field one last time. Maverick was already walking away with Phoebe by his side, the perfect image of a future Alpha pair.
Her voice was barely a whisper, but it carried all the weight of her broken heart. “How much more do I have to endure?”
Easton didn’t answer. He didn’t have to.
She already knew the answer.
More.
Because until she found the strength to walk away for good, the pain would never end.
Remind me why we are still not out of this place," Easton said."Luna might be needed anytime. I have to be present," Aurora stated nonchalantly. Easton glared at her and immediately knew she wasn’t as okay as she pretended to be. Even after the spectacle on the field, she had taken a moment to herself but still insisted they return to the halls because of her duties.Duties for a position Maverick had just given to Phoebe in front of nearly everyone in the pack."That asshole," Easton muttered as they stood at the far end of the hall. There was no one around, and the dim light shrouded them in shadows. Hidden from plain view, they leaned against each other."He’s been like this ever since the mate awakening ceremony," Easton said, glaring at Maverick, who stood on stage giving a speech. A smile rested on Maverick’s lips as if he hadn’t just shattered someone’s world with his words and actions. "The petty bastard even used you not showing up as an excuse to reject you."Aurora’s mind d
Aurora staggered for a bit before she managed to stand on her feet perfectly. Everyone present was shocked that she could even stand.“I’ve endured too much in this pack to stay another second. Hypocritical leaders, selfish members, and you—my mate—who failed me most. Keep your lies, your cruelty, and your title. I’m done.” Her eyes are cold and unfeeling. “All of you can dive headfirst into hell. I’m leaving this shithole of yours, and you can keep it for the rest of your life!” she spat angrily, despite the immense pain she felt. Turning on her heel, she began to walk away. Easton immediately followed her.Maverick also left the scene, his expression pained as he watched Aurora walk away. He seemed to have difficulty breathing; his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands were trembling. But no one noticed him leave. The pack councils and members attempted to follow her, but Alec shook his head at them, and they reluctantly stood down, watching as Aurora left the field—out of Moonlight Pac
How many people did it take for an unwarranted headache to sizzle up in one’s head and prick at one’s nerves? That had been the question the women Aurora was out in the woods with had asked each other just moments before. They’d all had different answers, and the numbers varied widely, but one thing united them despite their differences:For Aurora, there was no number. No matter how many people it took, no matter how irritating or intimidating they were, no one could shake the rock that was Aurora. She had agreed with a smile on her lips. How wrong they had been.Aurora had never thought she would see him again. They might cross paths someday, but it wasn’t supposed to be now. And even if they did meet, she wasn’t supposed to feel anything. But as she looked at his face, she froze. A lump rose in her throat, a barricade of conflicting emotions she hadn’t felt in the last five years crashing over her—emotions she had thought locked away. They bubbled to the surface as his hypnotizing b
Maverick gave a subtle mental nod when Layla pointed out that Aurora had been using a scent-masking spell since entering the room. It finally made sense. That was why he couldn’t smell her when she walked in or even now. But when Aurora muttered something under her breath, her scent broke through the spell, overwhelming his senses. The scent hit him all at once—too much, too fast. She smelled like the ocean breeze, the kind that brushed against your skin while standing by the sea with a seashell in hand. It was a scent he had always liked. For a werewolf like him, who spent most of his time in the woods, forests, and small towns, her scent was a welcome change. It calmed him. But as it teased his heightened senses, it awakened something deeper. His wolf stirred, thrilled by the possibility of finding another mate. Yet that joy dimmed almost instantly, replaced by anguish. His wolf recognized her. This was the same soul that had once hurt them, the same one they had broken the bond with
Layla had led them from their room that morning. Maverick and Alec had just finished dressing when the bubbly woman had knocked on their door. She had said that she couldn’t let them stay cooped up inside their room while she could show them the beauty of their pack.“Is it really necessary that you come and get us so early in the morning?” Alec had grumbled, and Layla bopped her head.“Of course. It is absolutely necessary. You people have already woken up and gotten dressed, and all you would do is stare at your phones and laptops in your room before we had to talk again at the meeting.” She replied with a wide smile.“And does it have to be only us? There are others too.” Alec said, and Layla rolled her eyes at him.“You are the ones I find most likable among them all, except for that beautiful brunette and her sidekick, of course, but a woman must get her beauty sleep. I heard she’s the pack's doctor. She must have a lot on her hands already, poor thing must study till late at nigh
“Fucking Zach delayed the documentation of the contract. Apparently, there was some glitch in the system, so Alpha Maverick and his representative had to stay a few more days. Tell your freaking Beta to act like one, Easton!” Layla snapped, her voice dripping with irritation. Aurora rolled her eyes at the drama queen, while Easton ignored her completely, engrossed in the video game on his phone.A lot had changed over the years, but not Easton’s love for games. He could sit with that phone from morning till night without growing bored. Hilton didn’t discourage him, either—in fact, he often joined in. Aurora often wondered how they managed to get anything done as the Alpha and Delta of the rogue pack.“Don’t you like their presence here?” Hilton asked casually, not even glancing up from where he sat, while Aurora sank comfortably into the beanbag.“I definitely don’t,” Easton muttered, earning a glare from Layla.“Of course you don’t, but I do. Why wouldn’t I like that hunk parading aro
Maverick stared at all the members of the supposedly ‘cruel’ pack and tried to pin that word with the image and actions of the people all around him, but it didn’t make any sense. They were all supposed to have scars when they tried to initiate themselves into the pack, hurting themselves for fun, but here they all were, gathered around a grown man who had tumbled in the field and hurt his toe, as if that wasn’t normal even for humans, let alone werewolves. But these people were rogues—the worst kind of werewolves. The first instinct of others when they saw rogues was to attack, and a lot followed that instinct. Then, they weren’t supposed to be offering sweet cookies to members of a rival pack, not supposed to get chummy with them. Neither were they supposed to be this happy about two of them finding their mates. They practically dragged them to build tents with them, cracking jokes like they had been buddies their entire lives. The kids here—rogues, werewolves, and hybrids—weren’t su
“It was late now, and they should just head back; there was no use staying around,” Layla said, and Aurora removed her hands from Kael’s when she was steady on her feet. She wasn’t going to accept help down the hill, and Kael understood that.“Thanks, Kael,” she said with a small smile, and Kael nodded with another smile of his own. He was happy to be of help, and the fact that she chose him instead of the asshole opposite already made him over the moon. She turned to Layla, and they both started to walk away.Maverick kept to himself since then, while Kael looked so proud of himself. Aurora had a blank expression, like she didn’t realize what she was doing, or maybe she didn’t care. But Layla never looked so pissed; she kept shooting glares at Kael, who straight up ignored them. They didn’t get the wild boar, and it was getting very dark, so everyone decided to listen to Layla.Aurora and Layla were the first to leave, hand in hand.Maverick wanted to just go to his room and sleep the
Aurora found herself sitting with Maverick again, her attention was all on him as he answered a question she asked but she would be lying to herself if she said that she heard any of the thing that he was saying but she had to jolt back when he waved a hand in his face and Aurora knew that she had been caught staring.“Are you even listening?” He asked with an amused smirk and she stared at him like a deer caught in the headlights before she nodded her head continuously.“Yeah, yes, of course, I am listening,” she answered.“What was I talking about?”“Your hunting experience?” She said but it came as a question.“We were past that, were you even here at all?” His eyes carried his amusement.“Of course I was, just a bit less than you have wanted,” Aurora said with a small awkward chuckle. There was no in hell she was going to tell him that she had been staring at him the whole time but it would be a surprise if he knew already.“Just so you don’t know, I was telling you that you have
Maverick ran fast in time just too dodge a rogue that was coming for him, he hardly stand probably on his feet before he turned swiftly and shot the werewolf in the neck before driving another bullet through its stomach, of course, it tried to stand up again but another final shoot made him fall back, it jerked on the floor again, it changed back to its human form and stared straight at the predator that was in front of him.His eyes widened when he saw that it was him and Maverick wondered if there was something with some of the werewolves, most of them usually looked shocked whenever they saw him. A determination to know what was with the odd reaction surged through him and he knelt beside the werewolf who was still staring at him in both fear and shock.“Al...Al…” he muttered and Maverick moved closer to him with furrowed brows.“What do you say?” He asked.“Mave…” The man trailed off and Maverick raised a brow at him, how on earth did this werewolf know his name?“How do you know
“I have been thinking about it for the past three hours and I am still finding it hard to believe that it is Alpha that I saw but it was so clear that it was him. There was no way he would have been able to keep his shock at bay when he saw all of us at the same time if he was pretending.” Sadie exclaimed, Rex was perched on her laps and he continued to play with Ferix’s hands with an innocent smile that contrasted with the mood of the room.“That’s not the main matter now, the matter is how we are going to get him back, we didn’t do anything before because we thought that he was dead but now we have a good chance.” Easton said at the same time that the door opened and a downtrodden Aurora. All of them quickly stood up to look at her, anyone would think that she would be happy when she returned because even though Maverick didn’t have any memory of them, it was still him.“What happened?” Easton who had quickly stood up and went to hold her and direct her to the table said with furrow
Aurora stared at the woman in front of her, eyes wide in shock and she found that she couldn’t form a normal sentence, she even had no reaction as she continued to stare at Phoebe who continued staring at her with curiosity as if she was seeing her for the first time.“Aurora, meet by best friend, Cara,” Maverick smiled at Aurora before he turned to Phoebe. “Cara, this is Aurora.” He introduced and they both stared at each other blankly.Aurora almost let out a scoff at the name and had to use every ounce of strength in her to keep herself seated in the chair and not pounce on the woman who was still staring at her as if she was just meeting her for the first time.Phoebe smiled at her and Aurora could tell that it was very forced, she wanted to go to her and shake her shoulder, torture her till she spill out the truth along with whatever secret she is hiding and what she did to Maverick to make him regard her as his best friend. How dare she claim that she was the one that gave Maver
Aurora moved forward and suddenly held the pendant of the necklace and continued to observe it, it was no doubt that it was the same one that she had gifted her to make sure that she could find him wherever he was.She wondered why on earth she hadn’t been able to find him in the two years they were separated if he still had the necklace on, how on earth he continued to keep it and not wonder where it was from. This clashed violently with the no memory case that she just clarified in her head, Aurora was sure that there couldn’t be another of that necklace in the world because it was an intense art of nonsense that ended up pretty well when she was making it.She raised her head to ask him some questions about the necklace and that was when she realized that she had moved very close to the man. His eyes burrowed into her as they continued to stare at her with an emotion that she couldn’t pin-point and none of them broke off the contact.Being this close to him made Aurora able to smel
Every one of them peeked from behind where they were hiding, Sally was holding Rex tightly to herself and it was starting to feel like such a bad decision to bring the little child along on their journey but Sadie didn’t see any other way around it, it wasn’t like she could leave the baby at home or stay behind herself. She desperately wanted to see her Alpha.Regina glanced at her mate who was behind Aurora and understood his need to feel close to her, this was the most that the woman had allowed her mate to be with him after suddenly putting a barrier through the friendship of many years that lasted for so long.It is better not to think about who was at fault because the blame didn’t have an owner.“Do you really think that it is necessary to do it like this?” Aurora muttered in annoyance at the fact that they were hiding, the irritation was visible between her brows. She had no problem with Maverick being the one to end her life, he was her mate after all, but Regina was sure that
Aurora could feel her brain buzzing as she stared ahead blankly, it was the first time it had buzzed to that extent, it wasn’t even worse to this extent when he died. It must be because at least she was able to comprehend what happened that day but what she witnessed some hours ago was definitely something that she couldn’t understand. After he had called her Aura, his phone rang and he picked it up, he talked to the person on the line for some minutes all smiles and chuckles before he disconnected the call and told Aurora that he had to go after reintroducing himself to her again as if she didn’t called his name when she saw him.Worst part of it all, he confirmed that his name was indeed Maverick, Aurora didn’t know if she would feel better if he told her another name as his name or not.She could hear the movement from the others outside and she knew that they must be wondering about her but she couldn’t bring herself to care, all she wanted was for Easton to get to where they were
The sky in her eyes was gray with a tinge of red, not only at night but every time, the forest leaves were ash and the trees themselves were black. That’s what happened when her mind started to ignore most things, either it was that or she had become monochromatic. She didn’t bother to find out which was right, it didn’t matter when all these just told her that a story existed.A story that has ended, just like her life and herself too.In this cocoon of hers, there was nothing that could draw her out, but as he stared straight into those eyes that were observing her and she had never seen something so blue.It was bright and snapped glow and brightened everything around her and she felt like it was sucking her in.The face that held those gems even knocked the breath out of her and she never felt winded before, was her illusion taking it too far once again and giving her comfort before hell?“Excuse me?” His voice dragged on with an unsure tone, his head tilted a bit as if to examine
Ferix was used to such a sight. He had seen it for the past two years but all of that was nothing compared to how she looked when she returned to Moonlight Pack when Crystabelle went to find her.Covered in blood and ash of people she ended their lives from head to toes, her hair was a mess as she clutched Layla whom she carried in a bridal manner in her hands, two jars were placed on Layla’s stomach and there was a pitiful yet disturbing darkness in her odd eyes. The next course of action was removing an essence fertilizer and activating it which was exactly what Aurora did, the forest quickly became dead and the snow was drained of water to become ice.She was giving them the punishment that they made Layla and a lot of people go through that year, she had such a precise control over essence fertilizer to the extent that it won’t affect those she didn’t want it to affect which made both Ferix and Mani remain safe. They didn’t have to wait for long before those witches who were very
