Paloma excused herself and let her daughters talk and share their stories. She couldn’t ask for more. Seeing Daniella and Lilian being comfortable with each other was more than enough to make her happy and contented. At first, she was angry when she learned that Lilian was pregnant and the father was unknown. Marcus and Samuel were watching Golden State Warriors versus Cleveland Cavaliers when a parcel was delivered. It must be the result of the paternity test and Marcus got excited to open the envelope. “What the fuck…” he cursed and tore the paper into tiny little pieces. “Marcus, what’s wrong?” Samuel was alarmed when Marcus was mad and tore the papers that he just received via courier. “Why did she make me believe that I was Mugsy’s father when I’m not?” He informed Marcus about the result of the paternity test. Marcus won, and Samuel couldn’t be happy about it because of the additional condition that was set on whoever won. “But then, what’s the big deal? Being a single mother was not an easy task, Daniella complained. Paloma suggested hiring a nanny for AJ but she insisted on taking care of her daughter personally. Call it insecurities or whatever, but she didn’t want AJ to be accustomed to a nanny. During the daytime, AJ and Vanessa usually played outside and watched chuchu tv after. Her family was loaded and she didn’t have to work for a living, but when she saw Marcus for the first time, she was determined to have him by all means possible. Their first encounter was still vivid in her memory and Alicia always got some butterflies in her stomach every time she recalled that memory. She was with her father to meet with Samuel Velasquez and discuss about business, and he was there with Samuel. Her interest in the man had intensified as Marcus tried hard to discourage her, so when she learned that Hacienda Velasquez was in need of an accountant, she applied for the job, much to the chagrin of her father. Paloma opted to celebrate her sixtieth birthday celebration at home. At first, the idea of having the party in a posh hotel appealed to her, but she realized that she was already a senior citizen and traveling a long distance would surely exhaust her and some of the guests. Daniella was glad when Paloma changed her party venue because it was grueling to travel with a baby and AJ was a little overweight for her age. But then, it was going to be a one-week event with various activities inside their estate. Lilian was in charge of the transportation of their guests who were not from Oslob as well as the room arrangement, whereas Daniella was assigned to decorating and flower arrangement. It was not as tedious as Lilian’s task because she didn’t have to coordinate with other people to do it. Marcus regretted following Alicia into the rain because the woman assumed that he was interested in her, and she dropped intriguing stories to the farm workers. Some believed that they were in a relationship. If only he knew the outcome of his action, he shouldn’t have let his heroic side save that woman. Marcus sighed as he concluded that women of any sort would only bring troubles into his life. Just like Daniella, he remembered the woman who still visited him in his dreams. Alicia insisted on coming with him to Paloma’s birthday, but he refused the woman made a scene that embarrassed him in front of Samuel so he agreed. He retraced his steps inside the bedroom and then he noticed the list of activities that were written on a scented paper. Marcus read that dinner would be served at eight o’clock and the theme was still Japanese. It was also specified in the list where they could get their costumes for the themed dinner. Who could have organized Paloma’s birthday? It didn’t fit her age which was sixty, but rather childish. Marcus chose the black hooded ninja robe with red trim and attached red belt while Ortega chose the red costume for a samurai warrior. While he put on the costume, he wondered what she was going to wear for dinner. Daniella believed that the geisha costume would suit her better than Lilian. “What if we’ll exchange our costumes for the picture-taking later?” She offered. “Does it mean that my costume is better than yours?” Lilian refused to exchange costumes with Daniella. “Common, let’s go.” She said as the picture taking would start in a minute. When they arrived at the Zen garden, everyone was already gathered around the made-up stage that has Japanese art as the background. The picture-taking started earlier than planned. Paloma did her best so the photographer could capture her best look for the night and pose in front of the young man with the camera in hand.
