Chapter 4

Leilani Hades

I was welcomed by Lyra in the living room, polishing her nails.

"Look who we have here. It's the latest bride..." She smiled, putting her nail polish away. She crossed her legs, reclining on the couch as she looked at me with a mocking smile on her face.

"How is life treating you in your new matrimonial home? It must be horrible being with that loser, right?" She tucked her hair away, a smirk settling on her face.

"Jaxon is no longer your boyfriend, but my husband now. Mind the way you address him!" I snapped at her, and she raised her eyebrows briefly.

"Wow! I didn't see that coming. Have you fallen in love with Jaxon already?" She asked, and chuckled. "I shouldn't be asking you that. You both are perfect match for eachother, so it's not surprising," She rolled her eyes.

"Where is Mom?" I asked restlessly.

"Mom? She obviously is not here," She shrugged casually.

"Where is she?" I demanded, my voice a bit louder and furious this time.

"You have her number. You should call her. You might as well give up though. Not that she's going to take your call, anyway,"

She was right. For the past years, I could count how many times I have spoken with Mom on the phone. She never take my calls, and not that something would make her do that this time.

"You can talk to me if you want," She rolled her eyes again, and I bit my lip hard.

I breathed in and out before I asked. "I have kept my own part of the deal, why didn't you keep yours, Lyra?"

"What deal?" She asked.

"Don't ask me silly question, Lyra. Where the hell is the money? I was supposed to get it as soon as I register my marriage with Jaxon. That was our agreement, Lyra, need I remind you?" I reminded her, raising my voice.

"Oh... That?" She stood up, crossing her arms on her chest as she faced me.

"Don't tell me you believed me when I said I was going to give you the money?" She stared at me, probably expecting an answer from me, but when I didn't say nothing than glare at her, she continued. "Come on, Leilani. I know you are dumb, but I didn't expect you to be that dumb. Who believes such a thing? This is why Mom hates you so much,"

My jaw dropped to the ground and my heart sank into my stomach. What was I thinking, trusting this bitch?

"Lyra---"

"If I were you, I would go find a way to save that old hag from dying. I'm sure you don't want the only person who tolerated you to die, just like that. Right?" Her lips curled up in a smirk.

My heart wrenched painfully. It felt like the weight of the whole universe was suddenly placed on my shoulders as I felt weak. Why then did I make this sacrifice if she wasn't going to help me?

Tears brimmed in my eyes and poured down my cheeks as I stared at her, unable to say anything. I opened my mouth to talk, but it felt like my tongue was tied down to my mouth as words failed me.

"Ly...ra..." My voice came out in a low tone, my lips trembling as more tears came rolling down my cheeks.

Begging her wouldn't change anything knowing the kind of heartless being my sister was, so I turned and walked out of the house. There was no point fighting with her. Solution was what I should be looking for at the moment.

I dragged my leg out of the house and to the roadside, waiting for a cab. It wasn't up to three minutes before I got a cab, and I hopped inside after I gave the driver the address to the hospital.

I tried to hold my tears back, but it didn't work. The pain was too much to bear. Maybe it wouldn't have hurt this much if this torture wasn't coming from my own family. My own Mom and sister.

As much as I wanted to get to the hospital early so I could see the doctor, a part of me wanted the car to slow down. I didn't even have the money for the surgery yet, so what was the point?

"We are here, Ms," the cab driver spoke, seeking my attention which I gave him as I pulled out of my deep thoughts. I realised that he was already parked in front of the hospital.

I paid him before leaving for the hospital building.

"Leilani..." Nanny's weak smile welcomed me when I walked inside the ward. Her brown hair which was mixed with a few grey hair was disheveled. Her face looked pale. She had lost a lot of weight.

"Nana..." I sat beside her on the bed, holding her hand as a drop of tears slid down my cheek.

She reached for my cheek weakly and wiped my tears with her thumb, smiling at me. "I'm feeling much better. You don't have to cry, dear,"

It was obvious she wasn't fine. She was in pain. She was dying, and it hurt to see her like this.

"You will be fine, nana... You will be fine," I assured her though that was almost impossible. I could barely raise money for her insulin and dialysis, let alone for the surgery. How was she going to get better?

Of course, I would take a loan if I was still eligible to, but I already took more than enough loan. I was drowning in debt, still, I wouldn't mind taking another if I had anywhere I could borrow money from.

'Jaxon. You should ask him. Who knows, maybe he has some money to spare' I quickly dismissed that thought once it crossed my mind. He was only an adopted child that probably had nothing to his name. How was he going to afford to lend me four hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the kidney transplant?
