It has been two years since I became the alpha of my pack. I can still recount the day I knew I would be the next alpha. It has been ingrained in my mind so much that I’ll never forget it.

I was sixteen when the sound of an alarm howl rang out through the pack. My parents, the previous pack leaders, told me to stay safely within the packhouse. I didn’t listen. I wanted to fight beside them, wanted them to know they could rely on me. That I was ready to be responsible for the pack.

By the time I reached them, it was too late.

The largest wolf I had ever seen threw aside their mangled bodies. Who was this alpha? I didn’t know. They were far beyond anything my parents had accustomed me to.

With the blood on his fangs, the alpha had yet to spot me, but my fear held me in place. I couldn’t move, my eyes still on my dead parents. War had always been something the packs had to contend with, but I had no way of knowing just how deadly it could become.

When the alpha moved on to his next target, I felt a hard body hit my side as someone knocked another wolf against me. That woke me up from my stupefied horror, and I knew I had to either flee or stand and fight.

I decided to fight.

Most everything else that day was a blur to me, but my pack had survived. What happened to the alpha that killed my parents? I don’t know. They didn’t die; I know that much, but I have never seen them again.

Since that day, the war has been on an unsteady truce. So many packs have lost loved ones and needed to recoup and recover. That isn’t to say little skirmishes haven’t happened, but nothing quite on that level since then.

As I gazed over the tombstones that were my parents’ graves, my beta Dereck stepped up next to me. That blond hair of his is all dishevelled, while that icy-blue gaze of his looks at me with tenderness. His hand gently lands on my shoulder, offering me silent support.

“Alpha Kai, we’ve heard news about the new alpha for the Crescent Ruby pack,” Dereck tells me in a mellow voice. They have been our biggest rival in the past, but I don’t really remember anything about the pack or their previous alpha.

As I drag my attention away from the graves, and onto him, I tilt my head to one side curiously. “What have you heard about him?” I ask.

“The only thing I have heard is that this new alpha is stronger than any other we have fought before,” Dereck told me. “I don’t have his name or where he came from. I assume he is the child of the previous alpha, but I’m uncertain.”

I nodded once and returned my gaze to the graves. I wish I knew who had killed them. Then maybe I could find some closure or even revenge. Perhaps another pack had killed him already, and that was why I hadn’t seen him since that day?

I could feel Dereck’s hand move from my shoulder to the small of my back. “I don’t know if he will resume the fight with us, or with the other packs, but we should be ready for anything,” he reminds me of our truth.

We can’t hold on to this uneasy peace forever. Eventually, the fighting will flare up again and the rocky peace will be over.

“Let’s go back into the packhouse,” I sigh out and offer Dereck a warm smile. I don’t know what I’d do without my beta. Ever since we met, he has been by my side as a loyal friend.

He gives me a nod, though his gaze lingers on me somewhat longer. I can’t always tell what he is thinking, but the look on his face now is one of concern. I attempt a small smile. He doesn’t say a word, but he knows this is the anniversary of my parent’s death and is doing his best to comfort me.

“I’m fine,” I lie to him as I stroll along the path through the graveyard. There are so many bodies resting here now that I’m surprised we have enough pack members left to protect ourselves.

Dereck catches up to me with easy strides, his gaze not shifting from me. “You’re not fine,” he says bluntly. “But I understand. You’ve been the alpha for two years, far sooner than anyone should. However, you’re not alone, Kai. You don’t have to carry the burden on your own.”

I turn my gaze towards him, offering a small smile. Dereck isn’t originally from my pack, but he acts more like family than anyone else. He is loyal and dependable and would make an amazing alpha.

Part of me always wondered if he might have been destined to be alpha in his old pack, but he never speaks about it. The same goes for me on certain things. The trauma we have both been through is not so easily shared.

“Thanks,” I tell him and turn my gaze back to my destination. Our packhouse is not too grand and feels more like a country home than some large place where leaders of the pack live.

I love it though. It is homely and although the memories of my childhood with my parents are painful to recall, I’m glad it has stood up against the test of time and the generations of war.

“How about we spend the rest of the afternoon with a game of cards?” Dereck asks. “Or chess, or maybe-” he pauses as he spots my expression.

I know he is trying to help me take my mind off of the memories, but there is no way I could focus on a relaxing evening. During moments like this, only two things can soothe my pain. Sparring so I do not have time to remember or to run so far and so fast that the world seems so far away from me.

“Shall we train then?” He asks. I glance at him and nod. Numbing my memories with fighting is better than allowing grief to consume me.

I can’t run as much as I would like. We might have had two years of what we might classify as peace, but that has never made it safe and running alone is far too dangerous.

I head towards our training field, taking off my shirt to prepare myself for a hard workout. With Dereck, nothing comes easy. He might be gentle with his words, but he has never gone easy on me in a fight and that is exactly how I prefer it.

“I won’t go easy on you today,” I warned him. Whatever mood I feel right now, the important thing as alpha is to show my pack that I am worthy of their trust and that I have everything together, even if I am losing it in my mind.

Dereck tosses his shirt away, showing off his muscular torso. He is slightly taller than me, and even more muscular, but I’m no slouch either. I’ve been training hard to fill my role as alpha, and looking the part is just as important as acting it.

“I wouldn’t want it any other way, alpha,” Dereck tells me with a smile.

He waits for my nod of approval before charging right at me. Although to the rest of the pack, this looks like our usual training exercises, to me, this is much more than that.

Just as I am about to counterattack, a loud warning howl sounds off at the pack’s border. My head shoots in that direction, eyes wide with panic and fear.

An enemy of ours is at our border! And on this day of all days!?

That warning howl has sent me into panic mode, but as soon as I feel Dereck’s hand on my shoulder, I realise I need to snap out of it. I’m scared, but I can’t let my pack down and freeze up. I need to be strong. At first, he just gives me this look of worry, but after a moment Dereck says, “Kai, I am with you. No matter what happens, I’ll protect you. Not just because I am your beta, but because I care about you. I’ll let nothing happen to you. I promise.”It is now, with his words, that I realise I’ve been holding my breath still and let it out in a restless sigh. “I’ll protect you too, Dereck,” I reply, nodding my head firmly. “No matter what. Together, as always?”“Together as always,” he agrees, sharing a smile with me. I can’t help but think of how lucky I am to have a beta as trustworthy as he is. He isn’t just a pack member, but my best friend.&ld

I can’t believe that pack is yet again hounding my scouts! I had them merely monitoring the smaller pack along the southern border, more to judge if they were still going to be a threat to me and my pack now that I’m forced to take over, but no. They have to interrupt my scouts like the pests they are!As soon as I arrive at the battlefield, I can see just how chaotic they’ve made it. Their beta has someone cornered against a large tree and, from what I can tell, he is also a beta, or perhaps an alpha? My warriors continue into battle without me, giving me time to judge the fighting with my own eyes. I rarely bring myself into the middle of a fight, as my warriors usually disperse a crowd quickly. This time, however, it might not be so simple. With three packs here, it is harder to tell which wolves belong to which rival pack. I’m not even sure they know who is who, either. The smell of blood assaults my nose, but something sweet l

From the moment he had taken down the two wolves who had attacked me, to when he stared me down, I knew right away who this wolf was. Or at least, knew what he was. He was an alpha and not one I could ever hope to win in a fight. He was large and fast, and his condescending tone made me want to bite his face off.I studied him carefully, his fur was a dark blackish-brown and his forest-green eyes stared me down in return.I might have been an alpha too, but just being there in his presence makes me feel inadequate. I avoided his gaze almost voluntarily from his alpha’s aura. Quickly enough, I realised I had no choice but to fight this man off. I had no one that would come for me. They had separated Dereck from me and I did not know if my pack had escaped or not.The only thought going through my mind when I lunged at this alpha was that I was going to suffer a slow, painful death, but maybe my pack would be safe for a little longer. The alpha easily

I can’t look at my beta or any of my scouts as I surrender to the alpha before me, nor when he forces me to lead him and his warriors to my home. The rest of the pack will need to be collected, as we have no choice but to go back to his land. I imagine he wants me there with him, to ensure the rest of my pack doesn’t fight his pack. They’ll need to know he is their alpha now, too. I hate this. I hate it so much, but I can’t win against this alpha. He is just too strong. I can hear the panic in my pack’s voices as soon as they see me and the larger alpha next to me. They probably already know what is going on, with or without me telling them. I order them to gather everyone in the yard and it isn’t long before everyone is standing in the yard. Even with everyone here now, we would still be no match against this alpha and his warriors. It is scary to think that someone would be that powerful. Looking at all of my pack, the alpha holds his head high as he claims, in a loud and clear

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH6 - Cedric's POV

As soon as he transforms into his human form, I can’t help but allow my eyes to roam all over his body. He is smaller than me, which I had expected just from his wolf form being smaller. His black hair, hazel eyes and lightly toned chest are all eye-candy to me. How he tries to be modest almost makes it more sexual than I assume he had intended it to be. I can’t help but smile at myself. My mate is incredibly sexy even when he doesn’t realise he is. I almost have to pull myself out of a daze and hand him a pair of clean boxer shorts. “I am not sure if they’ll fit, but they’re the smallest ones I have,” I tell him. Our fingers brush in the exchange, and it sends little tingles through them. I step behind Kai and look his back and arse up and down. I get the urge to fuck him but resist it. “How old are you?” I ask him instead. “E-eighteen,” Kai replies, confusion filling his voice. I hum thoughtfully before watching him don my boxer shorts. They’re not a good fit, but for now, the

I feel so violated by this man, but worse than that; I feel betrayed by my own body. Why did it get aroused like that when he touched me? It is unacceptable for an alpha to get turned on by another alpha or anyone that isn’t his luna.I follow Cedric to my new ‘room’ but I bet it is a jail cell or something awful. I hate this man so much! How dare he make me an omega and then touch me like that? I shoot him a few glares, but I am cautious that he doesn’t catch me in the act.Knowing my luck, he will punish my defiant look with something twisted. Though he said he didn’t have time, so hopefully this means I have some time to gather my thoughts? I have to figure out a way to escape this hell.I’m so lost in my thoughts that I don’t notice Cedric has stopped near the room we were just in. With a small thud, I bump into his back and blink in surprise. Why did he suddenly stop so soon? Aren’t we going to the dungeons?Glancing over his shoulder at me, I can’t tell what he is thinking, but

Seeing Kai’s reaction to my kiss really pleased me. He might not admit it, but there is no denying that he enjoyed it. If only he was ready for me to tell him the truth. He isn’t there yet, though. If I told him now, he would deny it, if not flat-out reject me. I don’t think I could take rejection. He is too cute to let him reject me like that. I’ll have to show him we belong together, that we need one another. Not sure how yet though. There must be a way, but I'll have to be patient and gentle with him. Gain his trust. Somehow, someway, I'll show him. As I leave the packhouse, I join the rest of my pack in helping settle down our new pack members. There is a bit of work to do, but I’m glad I got to this pack before any of the others realised just how weak they had become. Not that my mate is weak in and of himself, I can see he has a will to fight in him. It is just compared to the other packs. His pack has just become too small to survive. I sigh as I oversee the new members into

The sunlight hits my face as morning rears its ugly head. I turn over in bed, trying to hide myself away from the light. That’s when I realised something. I hadn’t gotten into bed last night. I was too stressed about whether alpha Cedric came in and did things to me while I slept or not. I quickly sit up in bed, tossing the covers off to make sure I’m still in the boxers he gave me. As I spot them, I sigh in relief. I don’t feel any pain either, so he never touched me in my sleep. Yet, he must have come in to put me to bed. Right? That man seriously confuses me. He could have easily killed me before. In fact, I had assumed that’s what he had come to do when he showed up. Instead, he made me bow down to him and he seems to have some strange kinks. At least, I think that’s what it is. Wish he would leave me out of it, though. A firm knock on the door alerts me to someone outside. Before I can deny whoever it is an entrance, the door is unlocked and Cedric strides in like he owns the

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH105 - Kai's POV

A few weeks later... Stretching out on the enormous bed, I almost don’t want to get up. However, before I can sit up, I am suddenly attacked by two small bodies as they jump up and down, calling out my name. “Alpha Kai! Alpha Kai get up!” I can’t help but laugh as I grab the corner of the quilt and spring it up and over the two kids’ heads. Their squeals of delight echoes through my ears, causing a wide grin to grow on my face. “Who dares to awaken the bed monster?” I ask in a playfully rough growl. As the youngsters squeal and squirm under the blankets, I can’t help but feel a small sense of relief that they can still laugh. After the last battle against Vukasin, we lost so many of our pack, and as a result, many children were orphaned. Although we couldn’t take all of them in, we have taken in these two little rascals and they have settled down as well as can be expected. The others have been sent to relatives or family friends should they have no living relatives left. After

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH104 - Kai's POV

I would be lying if I said I hadn’t hated every moment of taking Vukasin’s life, but I had made the decision and could not back down once I had made it. I wanted to be seen as Cedric’s equal, as an alpha, and not just his mate. As I helped drag Vukasin’s corpse through the street and back to the main battle. Cedric waited for me to stand next to him before he nodded. When I was ready, the two of us let out a victory howl together. As soon as the nearest pack members saw their fallen alpha, they stopped fighting in shock. Soon enough, the cry of victory echoed throughout the area. I just hoped Vukasin didn’t have a beta or gamma that would seek revenge at the loss of their leader. When silence fell at last on the battlefield, I gazed out at the remaining packs and saw we had paid such a heavy toll on both sides. I wasn’t sure what would happen now, but the biggest hurdle was over. The only thing left now was dealing with Vukasin’s pack and finding out who would join us or continue f

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH103 - Cedric's POV

I can hear Kai and Vukasin fighting one another, but my eyes still sting from the dirt that bastard flicked into them. It takes me a while before I can get them clear enough to where I can see them again. Though it still stings, and my eyes water each time I open them. Vukasin has dragged my mate down in front of him, and I realise that if I don’t step in now, he will slaughter Kai. My heart aches at the thought and before the worst can happen, I charge forward, forcing Vukasin to back up as I stand protectively over my mate. The two of us snarl at one another and I realise Vukasin’s hind leg is bleeding, and he isn’t putting any weight on it. Kai must have done some damage, which I am thankful for. This should give us an edge in battle. In all honesty, I’m surprised Kai had the resolution to fight with Vukasin. It makes me proud of him, to see how far he has come as an alpha. Having the strength to get past his trauma and to fight an opponent stronger than himself is something he s

I knew it would be risky to do this myself, but I couldn’t find anyone nearby that would be a better fit for this task. Going back to find Dereck or Joey would waste too much time and we couldn’t afford to wait any longer. We would miss our chance to end this quickly if I messed around trying to find and free up someone stronger.I watched Cedric chase Vukasin until he could guide him in the direction I had suggested. I knew my plan would work. It just meant I had to be careful when blocking the opposite way. I was sure I could distract him long enough for Cedric to do what he needed to do, it was just a matter of making sure he couldn't slip past me easily.Darting through the crowd of fighting werewolves, I find my way out of the chaos. Finally, I reached the spot before Cedric and Vukasin could reach it. I have a couple of things to do before they get here, but it wouldn't take me long at all.Transforming back into my human form, I grab the large industrial bins that I had spotted

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH101 - Cedric's POV

This fight has gone on for far too long, but I hadn’t expected it to be so easy. Even with the others flanking our enemy from the other side, this isn’t a straightforward battle. Vukasin has escaped my claws once again, though he hasn’t gotten far from me this time. However, I now have to deal with one of his warriors before I can continue my battle with him.I’m starting to think Vukasin is trying to tire me out by forcing me to fight as many of his warriors as he can throw at me. It is a cunning plan. To make me so tired that he can beat me easier. However, I know what he is trying to do, so I do the same. I have a warrior battle with him in return.I have to hand it to him. Vukasin is a formidable foe. However, dragging this fight out like this only makes it worse for both sides. We’ve already lost a fair number of warriors each and I can bet more lives will be lost. That might be an acceptable sacrifice to Vukasin, but not to me.

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH100 - Kai's POV

The pounding of my heart would not cease. I was exhausted, but we couldn’t stop even after we fought back the enemy. Their regrouping didn’t take long either after the two I had distracted had returned. However, with Joey’s help, the group thought twice about renewing the fight directly. There might have only been four of us, but we were formidable in our own ways and the enemy seemed to have understood that. However, they were not about to give up and walk away. They hounded us with each movement on our way back to the other group. They gave us no choice but to fend them off again and again. At this rate, we would be too tired to be of any help to Cedric and the others.Joey once more forced the last of our pursuers away from us before backing into the safety of our small group. “We need to rest,” he told us as he looked towards Rohn. “But if we rest, they will hound us even more. How frustrating.”I followed his gaze to the elder and realised Rohn wasn’t doing well. We were all tire

As I turned the corner, it seemed Dereck had gained the upper hand on the ones attacking him, but Rohn wasn’t fairing as well. He was old, though still putting up a fight. However, I realised something was wrong. Had they injured him in the fight? Whatever the reason was, he seemed almost lethargic. That’s when I realised what the problem was.Rohn must have known his mate was near death when she left his side, but if he had known of the exact moment she had died, I wasn’t sure. I heard tales of that being the case before but had never experienced it. If one could know the moment their mate died, then I was sure Cedric was still alive.Feeling there was hope, I charged forward and helped Rohn with the foe he was currently dealing with. Dereck would be fine for a while, but the old alpha would not survive against this young warrior for much longer.Just as the enemy was about to strike, I barreled into their side, knocking them off balance tempo

  • Subduing the Alpha   CH98 - Cedric's POV

I was sure I had seen my mate when the second group had flanked our enemy, yet now I couldn’t see him anywhere. I had forced Vukasin back against the others, but now he had gotten out of my reach. Yet despite that, the continuous fighting meant I couldn’t leave to find out where Kai had run off to.Sinking my fangs into the neck of a rival warrior, I waited for them to stop squirming before I pulled my maw away again. We had the advantage, and I knew we would win, yet not seeing Kai anywhere had me distracted. Was he safe? Or perhaps he had been forced to retreat for now?And speaking of mates, where was Dereck? He should have been with the group, too. I hastily looked around, but couldn’t see him anywhere either. Two others were missing as well. The old luna and alpha from Silver-Sun pack. Has something gone wrong? Did Kai get in trouble and they had gone to save him? Or was Kai the one trying to save them?I wanted to leave the fight to find
