Three months ago…
Enrico Bianchi was heir to a powerful Italian mafia, and since he was a child he learned to shed blood. To avenge the death of his parents, he trained rigorously. After twenty five years, Enrico went on missions, yet he maintained rigorous training.
Over time, he became a ruthless killer feared by all his enemies. He buried his emotions, there wasn't reason to get married or to be in a relationship.
On Saturday morning, Enrico was working out to forget the nightmares that plagued him every night. While kicked the punching bag, his mind evoked memories of the night he was hiding under the bed and hearing his mother's desperate screams. He took the towel and wiped the sweat off his forehead while reading his uncle's message on his cellphone.
Enrico's uncle was the mafia capo who controlled the family. Don Massimo Bianchi was so cruel and crazy that he spent hours watching the torture of his victims.
Since he was little, Enrico always accompanied his uncle. He stood beside the chair of the stout man, who told him why those people were punished.
Enrico was the second in command. He was responsible for resolving minor matters or family disputes when his uncle was not available. He would be the capo if Don Bianchi was arrested or when he was too old to handle business.
One night, Enrico went to the stripper’s house. He was well attended by the receptionist and taken to a private room.
The tall, brown haired man had a devilish charm that attracted feminine glances; the pupils, as blue as the aquamarine, shone. He could seduce and use any one of these half-naked girls in the room.
A woman, wearing a low cut blouse and miniskirt, poured him two shots of whiskey. His eyes were attentive to the red curtains that suddenly opened. Despite not falling in love easily, he always liked exclusivity. The young stripper appeared on stage and slid sensually onto the scenic sofa.
He took a sip of the drink whilst focusing his attention on the dancer's moves. He looked away from a subordinate who was coming into the room.
"What do you want?" Enrico asked.
"Don Bianchi wants to talk to you!"
Enrico closed his eyes in disgust, everyone knew that on his days off, he went out to have fun.
"What happened?"
"Your uncle has a mission for you!" The henchman informed.
"I'll be there in an hour".
Impatient, he ordered another drink from the waitress. Suddenly, he spotted a burly man who stood as soon as the stripper show ended. He noticed when the stripper took a wad of cash.
Suspicious, Enrico swallowed the entire drink and placed the glass on the small table next to his armchair, before getting up and leaving.
"Where are you going?" The girl stopped in front of him.
"Get out!"
"I thought you needed to have fun", she blinked.
"You already have company", Enrico lifted his chin, indicating the client who was waiting for her.
"You know that you are my favourite client, I will please you first and then I will look after the others".
"I told you I like exclusivity. Get back to work, or you'll lose another client".
"I thought there was something between us!" The stripper looked at him hopefully, waiting for an answer.
The Machiavellian smile made Enrico's face somber, it was obvious he didn't care. The stripper knew that gangster had a heart of stone, but she still liked Enrico.
"I can give you that massage you like!" She tried to seduce him with her honeyed voice.
"I don't want, bitch!" He screamed.
Everyone in the room looks at that embarrassed girl.
He put his hands in his pockets, and left the place without caring about the heartbroken girl.
In the black Rolls Royce, Enrico asked the driver to take him to Don Bianchi’s house.
...
Across town, the doctor Livia Ricci smiled after seeing the last patients in her medical clinic. She was such a self confident young doctor that, even before completing her residency at the Saint Mary hospital in France, she had already planned to open a clinic with her best friend.
A few months after returning to Italy, Livia opened her clinic in Florence. It had been a very busy day at the clinic. Lívia checked her schedule on her smartphone, there were ten more patients already scheduled for the next day.
She said goodbye to the employees while turning off the clinic lights. Lívia was locking the door when she heard a voice shout his name from across the street.
"Hey, Livia!”
"Don’t do it, Mattia!” She touched her chest, your heart beat faster. "You scared me”.
"Sorry, it wasn't my intention!"
"What are you doing here? I thought you had a date”.
"Yeah, yeah!" He scratched the back of his neck instinctively as they walked. "She wasn't what I expected".
"And as usual, you ran away”.
It wasn't the first time her friend had done that.
"Do you want to have dinner with us?" He asked, a little embarrassed. "My mother cooked fettuccine”.
"I don't know," she said. "I don't want to be an intruder in the middle of your family". She stopped beside the door of the red car.
The friend’s invitation was tempting, but she felt ashamed. Livia was an orphan. She never met her mother and didn’t even know who her father was. Unfortunately, Livia never knew what it was like to have her family gathered around the table.
"You know my mother loves you, you're our guest”.
"Ok, I accept! But, I'm only going because I love fettuccine, and I'm hungry.
"I can hear your stomach grumbling”, he smiled.
"You are goofy!”
Upon arriving at the modest house, Lívia was received by her friend's mother, she was kind and treated her with affection. Dinner had already been served, and the two were still talking about the improvements to be made at the clinic, until they were interrupted by the lady with white hair.
"No business talk at the table".
"Okay, Mom!" Mattia smiled.
It was almost 9 p.m. when Livia saw the raindrops hitting the window glass, it was time to go. Her best friend offered to take her to the door as she hugged Mattia’s mother and thanked her for the delicious dinner.
As they walked, he tried to convince her that it might be dangerous to drive in the rain, but Livia promised to text him as soon as she got home. After saying goodbye to her friend, she ran across the lawn towards the car. Livia got into the vehicle and waved to Mattia before turning on the ignition.
As soon as the vehicle entered the sumptuous property, the driver parked in front of the mansion with a white facade. Enrico remained seated, his countenance heavy. The big man opened the car door and waited a few seconds until Enrico pulled out and closed the button of the blazer. The first floor lights were on. The moment he entered the house, he heard his uncle’s voice complaining about a traitor.Enrico went to the room and listened when the counselor spoke about the danger of sending him to that mission. The counselor was completely inclined to convince Don Bianchi that this was a delicate situation. The Bianchi family was religious, however, the main businesses were focused on extortion networks, smuggling, illegal gambling and arms trafficking, so friendships with important people were essential to business. The Bianchi were leaders admired and feared by everyone around them, from employees to neighborhood residents. To fame was given thanks to the strict codes of conduct of
"You should be more grateful." She replied indignantly."For what?" He asked through gritted teeth."For saving your life. You were passed out on that sidewalk. If I didn’t find you, you’d bleed to death. It wasn’t easy putting you in my car. I took you out of the car and brought you to the suture room. ."You only did what you were supposed to do".He remembered the doctor’s voice whispering something about Hippocrates' oath before giving him the injection that eased the pain."You are rude!" She said. Livia didn't usually act that way, but that patient made her so furious that she had no reservations about returning the harshness. "Can you tell me the name of any relatives?" She lowered her face and checked the last exam on the computer screen.Enrico staggered over to the tray with several surgical instruments, picked up the scalpel and pointed at the cornered woman."I have nobody! You'd better keep quiet or things won't go so well for you".He continued threatening Livia to keep
Enrico let Livia go through the medicine cabinet. Bringing his face closer to the shorter woman's brown strands, he could smell the peach scent in Livia's silky hair."What are you doing?" She asked when she felt that Erico was very close."You're taking too long to get your fucking medication".Livia turned, holding the pot with painkillers and another of anti-inflammatory. She gave him a pill and a capsule to relieve inflammation from the gangster’s wound."I need water". He popped the two pills into his mouth.Lívia went to a small fridge in the corner of the room and took out a bottle of water. She had never been so outraged about taking care of a patient."Do you have other clothes?" Enrico drank the rest of the water."This isn't a clother's store"."Change it!" The sound of the gunshots continued for a further two minutes. Livia closed her eyes thinking about the dog and all his life projects. Enrico murmured.Opening eyes slowly, Livia saw the man who spent all day threatening her. If those shots didn’t kill her, at some point, Enrico wouldn’t hesitate to kill her. Livia wiped her tears in silence, fearing for her life. "Hey, are you okay?""Because of you, they blew up the medical clinic. I invested my money in this place, and you just destroyed everything". Her eyes were full of tears."They are entering the clinic". He looked at the door of the room when he heard the noise of the break-in. "If they wanted to kill us, they would have fired by now," she said, maybe it was an opportunity for her to ask and help escape from there. Livia left the room where Enrico was lying and went down the hall to the entrance of the clinic. She opened the door, men entered the room. Before even thinking how to escape, Livia had already been brutally dominated by one of the men who had nailed her to the ground. "I did nothing." She fought back slowly, thinking that these men were detectives and that they were there to arrest the gangster. "I work here in a medical clinic". His face was glued to the cold wood floor."Be quiet, bitch!" Livia was still trying to understand the gangster’s proposal while listening to the footsteps of two of Enrico’s henchmen approaching. One of the men said something she didn’t understand, Enrico just shook his head. "Will you marry me?" He kept his gaze fixed on Livia."I need some time to think about your proposal." She tried to buy time. "Could I have my cell phone back?"""Get the doctor’s phone." Enrico ordered one of the men standing outside."What if she calls the police, boss?""Give it back immediately."
