The elevator descended rapidly. The man beside Noelle gripped the handle of his suitcase with one hand and tucked the other into his pocket, his expression growing solemn.

Her heart lurched, and she tilted her head. "When was this?" She believed that no matter how awful Quentin was, he would never joke about his grandfather.

Quentin looked down at the ground. "His stomach's been hurting for a while, so he got it checked out. The results came in yesterday."

Her breathing quickened, and her heart sank. "I'll go see him when I get a day off in a few days."

Then, the elevator reached the first floor, and Noelle stepped out. He breathed a sigh of relief as he watched her leave. After a moment, he followed suit.
