BEFORE Laura could take a step closer to Gael, Astin pulled her out of the classroom. Her gaze stayed on Gael until they were outside. People in the hallway stared at them as they passed, recognising Astin. He had once spread around campus that she was his fiancée, which made her furious. Other girls, on the other hand, were overjoyed at Astin's simple smile. Some were practically squealing. Groups in the hallway were even nudging each other.
“Hi, Astin!” she heard Barbie's group from the Accounting Department call out.
He ignored them, keeping his focus solely on her. Laura just gave a quick glance towards the group that had called out to him.
When they reached the back of the building, she was startled as he suddenly pinned her against the wall. His grip was a bit rough, making her wince.
“So, you still haven’t told that guy we’re getting married?” She didn’t say a word. “You looked very pleased with the flower he gave you, didn't you?” he laughed bitterly and then continued, “I can get you something far nicer and more expensive than that. Just say the word, Laura, and I’ll buy it for you immediately,” he said, still angry with her behaviour.
She didn’t respond, only glaring at him. What did he think she was—obsessed with flowers? She almost felt like laughing at him.
What was he even doing here? She thought he had gone to work. His timing earlier had been spot on; she had been just about to accept the flower from her boyfriend Gael. She began to wonder who his “eye” on campus he mentioned was.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, avoiding his previous question.
Instead of answering, he pulled her back towards the building, taking them out of the university grounds.
“Astin, I still have class!” she protested, trying to pull free from his firm grip on her hand.
He stopped walking and looked at her.
“Well, if you’d just listened to me, you’d be in your class right now. Is it that hard to tell Gael I’m your fiancé?” he asked, as his face got redder because of anger and jealousy.
“Please, just give me some time to tell him. It’s hard, Astin. Really,” she said, lightly tapping her chest. “It’s not that easy for me because I love—”
“Shut the hell up, Laura!” he cut her off.
She froze when she saw his face. He was fuming red with rage. She’d never seen him so furious before.
Before she knew it, he’d taken her to his car, and she remained silent until they arrived at the HGC building, where he worked as the company's COO. Aside from managing the Hernandez Group of Companies, he also manages Hotel De Astin, with branches in Caramoan, other parts of the Philippines, and even abroad. She knew this was the project Astin had worked on when he travelled out of the country for two months.
Everyone they passed in the building's lobby looked at them as they were holding hands. They greeted him, but he didn’t respond. She felt embarrassed by his behaviour, so she smiled politely at them instead.
“They’re greeting you, Astin, and you never greeted back,” she commented once they entered the executive’s elevator.
“Don’t mind them,” he replied, leaving her with nothing more to say.
The elevator stopped on his office floor. Just like on the ground floor, all of the employees’ eyes were on them, which made her feel uncomfortable. A beautiful, striking woman greeted them, walking with a model’s stride in an exceptionally short skirt. Her role seems to be Astin's secretary.
“I wish you a good morning, Sir Astin. You have an—”
He snapped at his secretary. “Where is Romel? Do I have to keep telling you every day to talk to Romel and not me?”
“Please accept my apologies,” she said sincerely and sat back down.
The rumours she’d heard were true. Astin didn’t talk directly to his secretaries. Everything went through his personal assistant first. Everyone knew his mother, Aunt Kendra, had once been a secretary. That’s why many women had tried to attract him, but he hadn’t been swayed.
A moment later, he looked at her, pulling her hand as they entered his office. He gestured for her to sit on the long couch, removed his coat, and settled in his executive chair, loosening his tie as he focused on the papers in front of him. He eventually turned to his monitor as it powered on.
She watched him closely, realizing for the first time just how right Asia had been.
“Astin really is handsome, so why can't she fall for him?” she wondered.
But a part of her resisted those thoughts, feeling uneasy. Her gaze then fell on his reddish lips, which moved slightly. She wasn’t sure if he was intentionally wetting his lips, but it only made them look even redder. She found herself drawn to him. He had kissed her several times, but this was the first time she’d focused on it. She remembered his kiss from her birthday—a kiss that had completely blown her mind. She had to admit she’d enjoyed everything he did that night, feeling something then that she still couldn’t quite explain.
He rolled his sleeves up to his elbows. Why was it so mesmerizing to watch? He looked incredibly attractive while he worked. She swallowed as she watched his chest move, wishing he wasn’t wearing a shirt.
“Are you enjoying the view?” he asked with a smirk.
She swallowed at his question, sighed, and responded.
“Y-yes! I mean, no! I was imagining you were Gael,” she lied.
She jumped when he threw the pen he was holding. She clutched the couch, seeing his reaction. His eyebrows were furrowed.
She immediately regretted what she said when he stood up and walked towards her. Quickly, she moved to the single couch before he could get closer. She raised her legs and gripped her bag tightly. She gasped when he placed his hands on either side of the single couch, his face close to hers. She’d made a mistake again. She was now cornered by him. She should have stayed in her spot!
The anger in his eyes hadn’t subsided as she looked up at him.
“Repeat what you just said, Laura. Repeat it,” he ordered harshly.
She knew that wasn’t what he wanted to hear, so she shook her head.
He grabbed her chin, squeezing slightly, making her wince.
“Do you know how painful it is to hear that? And to hear it straight from your mouth? I’m right in front of you, but you’re thinking of another man!” His eyes were shut, holding back his emotions. “I want to punish you right here, right now, but I can’t bring myself to do it. Do you know why? Because I have so much respect for you, because I love you deeply, Laura. So please, stop testing my patience,” he said, his voice sad but firm, finally releasing her chin.
Then he lowered his gaze. She could feel the weight of his emotions through his breathing.
His hands were still gripping the couch tightly, showing his frustration. She heard his sighs hitting her knees and legs, sensing he was trying to calm himself.
When he raised his gaze, their eyes met. Sadness was written all over his face, making her feel a pang of guilt. His eyes dropped to her lips but quickly looked away. Straightening his necktie even more.
They both turned when his phone rang. He immediately picked it up and answered.
“Okay. Let her in,” he said to the caller, then hung up.
Romel soon entered with an elegant woman who made her feel insignificant. Her skin was flawless. Romel left right after introducing the visitor.
As soon as the woman saw Astin, she hugged him, making Laura’s brow furrow. To anyone else watching, it would seem they were a couple. She couldn’t see if he kissed her.
“I missed you, Aste,” the woman said with a smile.
“I missed you too, Elisa. How have you been?” he replied, hugging her back.
Laura felt a twinge of annoyance watching the two, though she couldn’t understand why. Since when did she care about who he hugged? But she didn’t know this woman.
Astin led Elisa to the long couch, completely ignoring Laura’s presence. It was as if she wasn’t even there.
Adjusting her position, Laura grabbed a magazine but couldn’t focus because of their laughter. She jumped when her phone vibrated in her bag. It was Gael calling.
Just as she was about to answer, Romel returned with another woman carrying a measuring tape. Astin noticed her and spoke with her briefly before pointing at Laura.
Laura felt lost in thought as Astin and Elisa left the room together. She hadn’t noticed the woman in front of her speaking. Apparently, Romel had already left without her noticing.
“May I take your measurements, ma’am?” The woman asked with a smile.
“F-for what purpose?” she asked in confusion.
“Oh, aren’t you Sir Astin’s fiancée?” the woman asked, her brow furrowed.
Was she? Then who was this woman Astin had been speaking with a while ago?
“Y-yes,” she replied.
“I just need to take your measurements for your wedding gown,” the woman explained politely.
Her eyes widened in surprise. “W-wedding gown? Astin hasn’t mentioned anything to me about this,” she said, still confused.
“I was informed that it needs to be completed by the end of the week,” the woman explained, leaving her even more shocked.
This week? Did that mean their wedding was being rushed? But why?
She glanced at the door where Astin had left through. Only Astin could answer this.
She just let the woman continue with her work. It wouldn’t be useful to discuss the upcoming wedding with her. She glanced at her phone, which she’d left on the center table earlier. It vibrated again, likely a call. She excused herself from Vivian, who was currently taking her measurements for what was supposed to be her wedding gown, to answer Gael's call.
“Love,” Gael greeted warmly.
“Gael,” she replied softly, glancing towards the door just in case Astin walked in.
“Are you alright? You didn’t come to class. Where are you? I’ll pick you up,” he said over the line.
“I’m good. Don’t worry about me. Astin and I just had to go somewhere,” she lied.
She couldn’t bring herself to tell him the truth. It was hard for her to lie.
“Okay. I missed you, Love,” her boyfriend said sweetly.
She looked at Vivian before responding. Vivian was also on the phone with someone, so she managed a small smile.
“I miss you too, Love,” she replied.
“So, when are you free? Can we go on a date as a late celebration?”
She paused at his question. She didn’t have class tomorrow. Should she tell him everything? How would he react? She needed to talk to Gael soon before Astin got to him first.
“How about tomorrow? ” she suggested.
“Sounds good. See you then!” he replied happily.
They said their goodbyes a little later. She still wasn’t sure how to tell him everything. She felt confused and didn’t know what to do. She was also afraid of what might happen.
She took a deep breath before returning to Vivian. It didn’t take long for her to finish, and soon Vivian left her alone. Astin still hadn’t come back, which was starting to make her feel irritated.
IT’S been an hour. Still no sign of Astin. He still hadn’t returned. And she was getting bored. She played all the games on her phone, and still he hasn't come back. Afterwards, Romel came back with a snack. She had hoped that he would come in too.She pulled her bag closer and got ready herself. She really needed to go home. She was about to stand when the door opened. She thought it was Astin, but it was just Romel—again. She felt a wave of disappointment in her heart.“Sir Astin said he'll be a bit late, ma'am,” Romel informed her. She nodded at him, and he left right after. Is he still with Elisa? She wondered, feeling a pang of sadness at the thought. Who could Elisa be in Astin’s life? She leaned back in her chair as her head started to ache. Without realizing it, she fell asleep. The gentle touch of a hand on her face stirred her awake. She opened her eyes to see Astin smiling at her.“Did I wake you up?” he asked, not removing his hand from her face. She shook her head at him.
That morning, Laura woke up to her phone’s alarm. She forgot to turn it off, so she sleepily did so. As soon as she saw Gael’s reply, she sat up.In the middle of typing her reply, she quickly pressed the answer button when Gael called her.“Good morning, love,” he greeted. She sweetly smiled upon hearing Gael’s voice. She hugged her pillow and lay on her stomach and then began speaking, “Morning, too—” But she didn’t get to finish her sentence as someone suddenly grabbed her phone and threw it against her bedroom wall.Shocked, she sat up in bed and looked at her broken cellphone. He looked at Astin to see his dark and fuming rage.“What the hell is your problem, Astin?” she asked. No answer came from Astin. He just threw himself onto her side. And she was about to get up when he pulled her close and hugged her tightly.“You are mine, Laura. Only mine. Bear that on your mind,” he said possessively, closing his eyes as if he were still sleepy. Laura has always heard these words from h
“Where have you been?” Astin asked her seriously. “Do decent women go home like that?”His last question immediately got on her nerves. She let out a bitter laugh before answering, “Wow, we’re not even married yet, and you’re acting like you’re my husband.”“That’s where we’re headed, Laura,” he said, standing up. He approached her, making her back up until she was cornered against the closed door. He gently touched her face. She held her breath as his finger traced from her eyebrow down to her lips, making her feel something she couldn’t explain. He even pinched her lower lip.“I know you were with Gael earlier,” he said quietly, but his eyes had traces of anger. “I am expecting good news from you, my Laura,” he added, pulling her close and causing her to grab his arm.“Astin,” she murmured, his face so close to hers. She could smell his fresh breath and the scent of his soap. She closed her eyes.“Let go of me,” she said, struggling to break free. Because of this, he presses himself
Astin is very reluctant to leave Laura at her house at that time. Tomorrow was their wedding, and still, he was nervous. Uneasy filled him. He didn’t want to go home yet, but his mother encouraged him to do so. They weren’t supposed to see each other today, but he insisted. Her mother wants him just to drop off Laura and then leave, but he can’t. He preferred to stay with her. He wouldn’t be at ease until they were married. He still had a few hours to wait before the woman he loved would finally be his.He looked at his friends, who were now causing a disturbance. They were throwing him a bachelor’s party. They were on the rooftop of their hotel, enjoying the calm sea and beautiful cabins.Because he didn’t want Laura to have a bad impression of him, he refused to let his friends bring women. Even though he knew Laura’s feelings towards him weren’t entirely certain, he respected and valued her emotions and opinions. He was already a bad shot with her and didn’t want to worsen things.
The helicopter had barely landed on the HGC helipad when he jumped out quickly. His happiness is at stake here, so he should not waste time. He had already ordered a search while in the air, but Laura was nowhere to be found, not even at the homes of Laura's former high school classmates. The cellphone he’d given her with a tracker was turned off. If only she’d turned it on, it could have helped the search. He’d already asked his Daddy Sebastian to pull up Gael’s profile—he needed his Daddy Sebastian’s expertise. With connections worldwide, he was sure his father figure could locate Gael and her woman.Ezi was on standby, waiting for his signal. He needed Gael’s current number to pass on to Ezi so they could track him. Once Sebastian gave him the information, he sent it straight to Ezi.He called their housekeeper, but Laura hadn’t returned home. She wasn’t even at the institution where her father stayed. He cursed repeatedly as he drove to the Malonzo family’s house. When he arrived,
8 YEARS LATER“Sergeant,” Astin startled when he heard a voice behind him. He turned around and noticed the worried expression on John's face. There he goes again, reminiscing about his past. There's still a slight pain, but it's not the same as before. He’s learned to control himself, and he could say he's a different Astin now, shaped by time. He dated a lot of women just to fulfill his needs as a man. He no longer centered his life around that one woman. Being a soldier is not easy. You’re away from your country for months or years and, above all, far from family. He’s been away from his family for eight years. He graduated top of his class in the military four years ago. His parents were proud of him, though they weren’t happy about his choice of profession. They were deeply saddened when he agreed to be sent abroad.Recognized for his potential, he was one of those sent to Somalia, where he was also given the authority to choose who he would take with him. One of those he chose w
LAURA was walking down the stairs when she overheard her Aunt Kendra talking to Uncle Kent on the phone. She paused mid-step, eager to catch any news about Astin. It had been eight long years since she last saw him. To this day, she blamed herself for Astin joining the military. If only she had shown up at his wedding, none of this would have happened. He would have been happy and still with them now. Though Aunt Kendra never showed it, Laura knew she was deeply sad. She would often find her aunt spending entire days in Astin's room. Laura had apologized countless times to the Hernandez couple, but they never held a grudge against her. They welcomed her back after a year. Now, she was working as Andrea's secretary in their office. They had offered her a higher position, but she declined, preferring her current role. Ever since Astin left, Andrea had been managing HGC and Hotel De Astin, with the couple's guidance.Since Astin disappeared from her life, Laura herself had become melanch
LAURA had just finished taking a shower. She was waiting for her dress to arrive for Astin's welcome-back party. Astin didn’t want the party, but his mother insisted. Close relatives and family friends were invited. Some police and AFP officials would also attend, along with Astin’s whole team, who became his family while fighting abroad.Andy’s smiling face was the first thing she saw when she heard the knock on her door.“You okay?” she immediately asked.“Yeah,” she replied, smiling. She handed her the dress she brought. “Here, this will look good on you. You need to look great tonight,” she said, smiling as she gave her the dress. She looked at it, then glanced at Andy. “I can’t wear this, Andy,” she said firmly.“Why not? It suits you. I’m sure my brother’s eyes will pop out when he sees you in that!”She bit her lip at her comment. She didn’t know that her brother was cold towards her—cold as ice. She shouldn’t even be attending tonight. But since the party would be held right
IRA kept glancing at her boss’s office door. It was already noon, yet he hadn’t called her to make his coffee. Astin had been cold toward her for a week. He hadn’t spoken to her since their last encounter at his condo. For days, she’d been trying to remember everything. Who she really was. But it always ended with a pounding headache. She focused on her desk and started her work. She was about to get the papers she had printed when she heard the familiar voice of a child. Her heart swelled with joy. She hadn’t seen the child for days. She missed her so much. If she was truly Laura, she wanted to make it up to her. Smiling, she stood up and turned to the door. But her smile faded when she saw the child holding onto a beautiful woman. The two were talking as they walked, and Kiarra seemed happy talking to the woman. Ira’s gaze fixed on her child. Her daughter’s smile was radiant. She wanted to rush and embrace her. But tears welled up in her eyes when Kiarra kissed the wom
She halted mid-step upon seeing the inside of her boss’s condo. She clutched her chest several times, feeling as if she had already been here before. It was familiar to her. She was confused. Where had she seen this? In her dreams? Was this one of the buildings she had glimpsed before? Her gaze locked onto a large framed photo hanging on the condo’s wide wall. If she wasn’t mistaken, it was his wife. She couldn’t bring herself to blink while staring at the woman’s face. She took in every detail. Their eyes and lip shape were identical. Without thinking, she reached out and gently caressed the large portrait. She stopped at the sound of Lionel Richie’s *The Only One* playing. A strange pounding filled her chest. She turned to her boss, who was already watching her. He held a remote control. He raised the volume and slowly walked toward her. Before he could get closer, she felt a sharp pain in her head. “Ahh…” she groaned. A part of her head throbbed. She clutched her head, gripp
As soon as Ira entered her house, Astin sped off in his car. The next thing he knew, he was standing in front of Spotlight. He called Ian first. No answer. So, he called Lexxie instead, who immediately handed the phone to Ian. This was the first time in a long while that he was asking his friend for help. He hadn’t been active in Ian's agency since losing his wife, Laura. He felt embarrassed to call his Daddy Sebastian. His parents would find out about everything he was doing again. He needed certainty before telling them anything. So many things were running through his mind. He was so darn attracted to Ira. Not just to her face, but to her entire being. Her face was the only thing different from his wife’s. Ira’s natural scent was driving him crazy. His wife rarely wore perfume, so he knew her scent by heart. It was the same. He wanted to give himself hope. He wanted to be happy! Fate had been too cruel to him. He felt like he was going insane with all his thoughts! Even
HER boss kissed her lips tenderly before pulling himself out of her. They both lay on the sand, staring blankly into space. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. She had given herself to her boss, while she couldn’t even bring herself to give in to her husband. But what could she do when both her heart and body had willingly surrendered? She covered her face with her hands for a moment. When she looked at her boss, she found him gazing at her. He wasn’t even blinking, so she flicked his forehead. “You’re making me uncomfortable. Stop staring,” she muttered. “Do you really love your husband? What if I told you to leave him and come with me? Would you?” She froze at his question. “Just because this happened between us doesn’t mean I’ll leave my husband.” She shook her head. “We have a child. And what happened between us... was a mistake.” Sadness clouded his face. The moon shining down on them made his emotions even clearer. “What you just said hurts, Ira, but
Just as she had promised Kiarra. After they ate, she invited her to swim in the sea. The child was overjoyed. She helped her change into swimwear. Since she didn’t bring anything to swim in, she just wore shorts and a spaghetti top. It was nighttime anyway, so it was fine. She carried Kiarra until they reached the shore. Her boss didn’t come along, which relieved her. It was just the three of them—her, Kiarra, and the nanny. She wouldn’t feel awkward. She guided the child as she swam. They stayed in the shallow part, where the water only reached Kiarra’s waist. The little girl showed off, moving away from her using the butterfly stroke. When she returned, she used freestyle. Laura clapped for her. She never expected Kiarra to be this good. They even had a swimming race. She let the child win on purpose, which made her happy. The nanny cheered for Kiarra. Laura felt genuinely happy whenever she saw Kiarra laugh. There was something different about this child’s presence. “You'
Déjà vu! Ira glanced around her surroundings—the hotel, cabins, and the other views. Everything seemed familiar. She felt like she had been here before. She blinked several times, but she was still standing there, in the same spot. She wasn’t dreaming. Her feet felt rooted to the ground, unable to move. She clutched her head when a sharp pain suddenly struck. Grasping the car door for support, she was thankful that her boss and his daughter had gone ahead. Otherwise, she would just add to their worries. She decided she would follow once she felt better. She was starting to notice a pattern—these headaches were becoming more frequent. Perhaps it was because of her amnesia. She had yet to meet the doctor who, as her husband Thunder claimed, was his cousin. When they returned to Manila, she promised herself she would consult a specialist. For years, she had suffered, unable to remember her past. The only one who gave her glimpses of her life before was Thunder. She turned her
The next day, Ira woke up early, but her husband woke up even earlier to prepare breakfast for her. She smiled sweetly at Thunder when he turned to look at her.“Good morning, my wife,” he greeted, leaning in to kiss her cheek. “Good morning. Why don’t you go back to sleep? I can handle this,” she suggested. “I’m fine, honey. I wanted to cook for you,” he replied, returning to the stove to continue cooking. “Thank you so much, Thunder.”“Come on, it's my responsibility,” he said. “I know, but I really appreciate it.” Deep inside, guilt tugged at her. After breakfast, she took a shower. She had mentioned last night that someone would pick her up at six. Once she was dressed, she went to see her son. She hugged and kissed him repeatedly. She was going to miss the king of her life. She pinched his handsome face one last time, laughing when he swatted her hand, eyes still closed. Right at six, she heard a car honk outside. She recognized the vehicle immediately—it was her
Ira splashed water on her face in the restroom, her thoughts in turmoil. She slapped her forehead and mouth repeatedly. She hadn't even shared that kind of intimacy with her husband since she regained consciousness three years ago—only cheek kisses. But now? She had gone too far, giving in to someone else—her boss, of all people! “Stupid!” she whispered harshly to herself. She was alone in the restroom at the moment. Hurriedly, she fixed her appearance, dabbing powder on her face and applying lipstick. Then she stepped out. When she exited, her eyes met her boss's briefly before she quickly averted her gaze and headed straight to her desk. Before he could come out of his office, Thor entered. Thor was the boss's first cousin. He glanced at Ira. “Hi, Ira! So, this is where you got transferred. No wonder I haven’t seen you lately.” “Good morning, Sir Thor. Yes, just this week,” she replied with a smile. Her smile faltered when she noticed her boss glancing between her and
At exactly ten in the morning, she sat at Romel's former desk—the boss's previous secretary. Quickly, she reviewed the report Lesha handed her and set it aside. She planned to forward it to the boss later. She also replied to pending emails in Romel's inbox. She checked the boss's schedule to see if there were any meetings in the afternoon. There were none. Grabbing the signed folders, she stood up and informed Lesha that she would deliver them to their respective departments. She walked briskly, already familiar with which floors to visit. Her eyes stayed fixed on the folders as she walked, scanning which ones to prioritize. She winced in pain when she bumped into something broad and solid. Not something—someone. And to make things worse, she stepped on the person’s shoe. Her eyes widened in shock when she recognized who it was. It was her boss! “Careful!”“Sorry,” she quickly apologized, crouching down to clean his shoe, but he pulled it away. “I didn't ask you to clean it. I
