IT’S been an hour. Still no sign of Astin. He still hadn’t returned. And she was getting bored. She played all the games on her phone, and still he hasn't come back. Afterwards, Romel came back with a snack. She had hoped that he would come in too.
She pulled her bag closer and got ready herself. She really needed to go home. She was about to stand when the door opened. She thought it was Astin, but it was just Romel—again. She felt a wave of disappointment in her heart.
“Sir Astin said he'll be a bit late, ma'am,” Romel informed her. She nodded at him, and he left right after.
Is he still with Elisa? She wondered, feeling a pang of sadness at the thought. Who could Elisa be in Astin’s life?
She leaned back in her chair as her head started to ache. Without realizing it, she fell asleep. The gentle touch of a hand on her face stirred her awake. She opened her eyes to see Astin smiling at her.
“Did I wake you up?” he asked, not removing his hand from her face.
She shook her head at him. He nodded back.
She parted her lips as he ran his finger along her lower lip. She gasped softly as he gave her a tender kiss. She found herself responding to his kiss, prolonging the moment. He smiled as he pulled away.
“Come, let's have our lunch,” he said affectionately.
She suddenly felt shy about responding to his kiss. What would he think? That she enjoyed the kiss?
She found herself following him as he led the way. They ate at an Italian restaurant, where it felt as if they were a real couple. He served her food attentively. He had always been sweet, but it had never really mattered to her, especially since she had Gael. The man she loved.
“Do I really love Gael?” A voice in her mind suddenly questioned her, making her shake her head.
After they finished eating, she told him she needed to go home. She knew he had work, but he refused to let her go home alone. He escorted her all the way to her room. But before he could leave, she spoke to him.
“Astin,”
“Yes?”
“Is it true you’re rushing the wedding?” He paused at her question.
It took him a while to answer. “Yes, why? ”
“When?”
“By the end of the month. So you should break up with Gael, Laura. Don’t wait for me to tell him myself,” he said coldly.
She covered her face with her hands. That would be next week! What would happen to her and Gael?
“Are you sure about this, Astin? Marriage is not a joke. Do you think we’ll be happy if only one of us is in love? Do you think our marriage will work if only you—” pointing at him. “ —want it?” she asked in rapid succession, making him pause on his way out.
He looked at her without emotion, then gave a bittersweet smile. “In time, you’ll learn to love me too, Laura. Let’s just give this marriage a try,” he said, approaching her. “I am not that hard to love.”
She bit her lip at his question. “I love Gael, Astin. He’s the one I dream of spending my life with. I only see you as a brother. So please, stop this while we still can,” she pleaded, searching his face for any reaction, but he showed none. “I don’t want to be tied to a marriage that I don’t want. Please think about it, Astin. Please?” she said tearfully, clutching his hand.
He withdrew his hand and stepped back. “No, we’re going through with the wedding whether you like it or not. And I know I already have a place in your heart. I can feel it, Laura. You just don’t want to admit it,” he paused. “If you really can’t love me by then, I’ll arrange for myself to have our marriage annulled. Let’s just try. Please?” He pleaded in turn.
She shook her head. Definitely, she is not agreeing with his plan. Marriage isn’t something they can just take a bite of and spit out if they don’t like it. It’s not that easy. It’s the marriage they’re talking about. It is sacred. Their freedom was also at stake here.
“Astin, I can’t leave Gael. I love him. So much,” emphasizing the word love, hoping to change his mind. However, he only became angrier. He left without saying a word and slamming the door.
She couldn’t say for sure that Gael was the man meant for her either. It was far too soon to say that. She just didn’t want to be tied to a marriage that was against her will.
She did nothing all day but sleep. Asia hadn’t replied about their lecture for the day. She slept until six in the evening. She cleaned herself and went to the kitchen to help out as she usually did. When she arrived, she found Astin’s mother chopping ingredients.
“Good evening, Auntie,” she greeted her.
Her aunt frowned at the way she addressed her.
“Call me ‘Mama,’ dear,” she said.
“Mama,” she repeated. Hearing this, Astin’s mother gave her a warm smile.
Kendra and Manang Ida were cooking beef caldereta. She offered to wash the used utensils since her Mama Kendra wouldn’t let her chop anything for fear she might cut herself.
They did not eat together with Astin that night because he hadn’t returned yet. His father Kent asked if they had any disagreements, to which she answered no. The couple was already aware that the wedding was set for the end of the month. The reception would be at Hotel De Astin, and the wedding would take place at Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Church. At least, that’s what his mother had told her. She would have been happy about the wedding idea if she really wanted to get married now. Most of the women dreamt of a church wedding, including herself. But of course, she wanted it to be with the right man at the right time. Just not now.
She had just finished her assignment and report for Monday. With nothing else to do, she tucked herself onto her bed.
As she remembered Astin, she glanced out the window. It looked like he wasn’t home yet.
She decided to go to sleep without bothering herself again.
Her nap was interrupted by the sound of a car. Two cars pulled up as she peeked out the window. Her face fell as she noticed Ezi helping Astin out of one car. The driver’s door of the other car opened, and Elisa stepped out, followed by an unfamiliar person from the front passenger seat.
She found herself meeting them. As she arrived downstairs, she saw Kendra also coming out.
Astin was heavily intoxicated. She heard her name being mentioned, which made everyone look in her direction.
“Oh my God, son! What happened to you?” his mother exclaimed, rushing to his side. “What happened, Ezi?” she asked, turning to Astin’s best friend.
Ezi simply shrugged and said, “Sorry, Auntie. By the time we arrived, he had already dropped several bottles. Uncle Dane tried to stop him, but he never listen,” he explained, guiding Astin onto the sofa.
Ezi looked at her and then he smiled. Their attention turned as two women entered. Astin’s mother knitted her brows when she recognized Elisa.
“Elisa, what are you doing here?” Kendra asked. “Does your mother know you’re here? It’s getting late!” as she continued.
“No, Auntie. Please don’t tell her,” Elisa pleaded, greeting her aunt with a kiss.
“Alright. Just make sure you go straight home, okay? ”
“Yes, Auntie. Come on, Ez,” she said, signalling Astin’s friend to leave.
Elisa didn’t even bother looking at her. She seemed shy, and Laura couldn’t understand why.
She and Astin’s mom helped him up to his room. She volunteered to clean him up. He kept muttering while she wiped him down.
“Laura,” he murmured, tossing and turning on the bed.
She looked at his face. It seemed he was dreaming.
“No. No!” he shouted, so she woke him.
Astin opened his eyes and then closed them again, likely due to the alcohol. Later, she felt his hand tighten around hers, causing her to gasp softly. After a moment, his grip loosened. She looked at his face, seeing he was now sleeping peacefully. Once she was done wiping him down, she covered him with a blanket and left his room.
Before going to bed, she typed a message to Gael, telling him where and when they would meet tomorrow.
That morning, Laura woke up to her phone’s alarm. She forgot to turn it off, so she sleepily did so. As soon as she saw Gael’s reply, she sat up.In the middle of typing her reply, she quickly pressed the answer button when Gael called her.“Good morning, love,” he greeted. She sweetly smiled upon hearing Gael’s voice. She hugged her pillow and lay on her stomach and then began speaking, “Morning, too—” But she didn’t get to finish her sentence as someone suddenly grabbed her phone and threw it against her bedroom wall.Shocked, she sat up in bed and looked at her broken cellphone. He looked at Astin to see his dark and fuming rage.“What the hell is your problem, Astin?” she asked. No answer came from Astin. He just threw himself onto her side. And she was about to get up when he pulled her close and hugged her tightly.“You are mine, Laura. Only mine. Bear that on your mind,” he said possessively, closing his eyes as if he were still sleepy. Laura has always heard these words from h
“Where have you been?” Astin asked her seriously. “Do decent women go home like that?”His last question immediately got on her nerves. She let out a bitter laugh before answering, “Wow, we’re not even married yet, and you’re acting like you’re my husband.”“That’s where we’re headed, Laura,” he said, standing up. He approached her, making her back up until she was cornered against the closed door. He gently touched her face. She held her breath as his finger traced from her eyebrow down to her lips, making her feel something she couldn’t explain. He even pinched her lower lip.“I know you were with Gael earlier,” he said quietly, but his eyes had traces of anger. “I am expecting good news from you, my Laura,” he added, pulling her close and causing her to grab his arm.“Astin,” she murmured, his face so close to hers. She could smell his fresh breath and the scent of his soap. She closed her eyes.“Let go of me,” she said, struggling to break free. Because of this, he presses himself
Astin is very reluctant to leave Laura at her house at that time. Tomorrow was their wedding, and still, he was nervous. Uneasy filled him. He didn’t want to go home yet, but his mother encouraged him to do so. They weren’t supposed to see each other today, but he insisted. Her mother wants him just to drop off Laura and then leave, but he can’t. He preferred to stay with her. He wouldn’t be at ease until they were married. He still had a few hours to wait before the woman he loved would finally be his.He looked at his friends, who were now causing a disturbance. They were throwing him a bachelor’s party. They were on the rooftop of their hotel, enjoying the calm sea and beautiful cabins.Because he didn’t want Laura to have a bad impression of him, he refused to let his friends bring women. Even though he knew Laura’s feelings towards him weren’t entirely certain, he respected and valued her emotions and opinions. He was already a bad shot with her and didn’t want to worsen things.
The helicopter had barely landed on the HGC helipad when he jumped out quickly. His happiness is at stake here, so he should not waste time. He had already ordered a search while in the air, but Laura was nowhere to be found, not even at the homes of Laura's former high school classmates. The cellphone he’d given her with a tracker was turned off. If only she’d turned it on, it could have helped the search. He’d already asked his Daddy Sebastian to pull up Gael’s profile—he needed his Daddy Sebastian’s expertise. With connections worldwide, he was sure his father figure could locate Gael and her woman.Ezi was on standby, waiting for his signal. He needed Gael’s current number to pass on to Ezi so they could track him. Once Sebastian gave him the information, he sent it straight to Ezi.He called their housekeeper, but Laura hadn’t returned home. She wasn’t even at the institution where her father stayed. He cursed repeatedly as he drove to the Malonzo family’s house. When he arrived,
8 YEARS LATER“Sergeant,” Astin startled when he heard a voice behind him. He turned around and noticed the worried expression on John's face. There he goes again, reminiscing about his past. There's still a slight pain, but it's not the same as before. He’s learned to control himself, and he could say he's a different Astin now, shaped by time. He dated a lot of women just to fulfill his needs as a man. He no longer centered his life around that one woman. Being a soldier is not easy. You’re away from your country for months or years and, above all, far from family. He’s been away from his family for eight years. He graduated top of his class in the military four years ago. His parents were proud of him, though they weren’t happy about his choice of profession. They were deeply saddened when he agreed to be sent abroad.Recognized for his potential, he was one of those sent to Somalia, where he was also given the authority to choose who he would take with him. One of those he chose w
LAURA was walking down the stairs when she overheard her Aunt Kendra talking to Uncle Kent on the phone. She paused mid-step, eager to catch any news about Astin. It had been eight long years since she last saw him. To this day, she blamed herself for Astin joining the military. If only she had shown up at his wedding, none of this would have happened. He would have been happy and still with them now. Though Aunt Kendra never showed it, Laura knew she was deeply sad. She would often find her aunt spending entire days in Astin's room. Laura had apologized countless times to the Hernandez couple, but they never held a grudge against her. They welcomed her back after a year. Now, she was working as Andrea's secretary in their office. They had offered her a higher position, but she declined, preferring her current role. Ever since Astin left, Andrea had been managing HGC and Hotel De Astin, with the couple's guidance.Since Astin disappeared from her life, Laura herself had become melanch
LAURA had just finished taking a shower. She was waiting for her dress to arrive for Astin's welcome-back party. Astin didn’t want the party, but his mother insisted. Close relatives and family friends were invited. Some police and AFP officials would also attend, along with Astin’s whole team, who became his family while fighting abroad.Andy’s smiling face was the first thing she saw when she heard the knock on her door.“You okay?” she immediately asked.“Yeah,” she replied, smiling. She handed her the dress she brought. “Here, this will look good on you. You need to look great tonight,” she said, smiling as she gave her the dress. She looked at it, then glanced at Andy. “I can’t wear this, Andy,” she said firmly.“Why not? It suits you. I’m sure my brother’s eyes will pop out when he sees you in that!”She bit her lip at her comment. She didn’t know that her brother was cold towards her—cold as ice. She shouldn’t even be attending tonight. But since the party would be held right
EVEN with only a few hours of sleep, Laura still woke up early. She quickly showered and went down to the dining room. The helpers, who were tired from the night before, had already prepared breakfast early.“Good morning,” she greeted them. The three helpers greeted her almost in unison.“Take a seat and eat your breakfast, dear. It’s likely that the couple will wake up later. The party ended late last night,” Manang Rosa said to her.“Is that so? Alright, I’ll eat now since I have work,” she said, grabbing a mug to make her own coffee. She didn’t ask the helpers to make her coffee because she wasn’t their boss. She was only a guest, something she constantly reminded them of.“Good morning, Ms. Laura,” Mang Vincent greeted, arriving just then. “What time are we leaving?” he asked her.“After we eat. Have some breakfast first,” she invited him warmly while she scooped rice and a dish onto her plate.Because she was afraid to drive, Mang Vincent drove her to and from work every day usi
Laura glanced at her reflection in the mirror and smiled softly. She had opted for simplicity—a long-sleeved lace wedding gown with an elegant backless design. It wasn’t overly extravagant because simplicity suited her personality. In just two weeks, her figure and belly had grown noticeably. She looked so different compared to their prenup photos, where she wasn’t as plump. Yet she didn’t mind at all. What mattered most was that she and her baby were healthy. “You’re absolutely stunning, my dear!” Kendra praised warmly, still by her side. After all, Astin had strictly instructed her not to leave Laura’s side, knowing his fear of being stood up again. “Thank you, Tita,” Laura replied with a smile. “Call me Mama, dear. Finally, your wedding is happening. I’m so happy for you and Astin, and of course, excited for my grandchild,” she said happily. Touched, Laura embraced her tightly. “Thank you, Mama, for everything. You’ve been so kind to me, even after what I did before. I was
ASTIN was utterly shocked when Andy told him that Laura was planning to transfer to Caramoan. He didn’t believe that her father was the reason behind her decision. He told his sister not to approve her request. When Andy demanded a reason, he had no choice but to admit what had happened between him and Laura. Andy also asked about Barbie, and he confessed that she was just a part of his mission. He wasn’t mistaken. Laura already knew that Barbie was staying at his condo. She was the one who delivered the papers his mother had asked to review for the hotel expansion. At that moment, he wanted to explain himself to Laura. He wanted to run after her. Even though she didn’t say a word, he could tell she was hurt. She might think she was just one of the many women in his life, which wasn’t true. She was the only woman he had ever truly loved. He almost kicked Barbie out of the condo after overhearing everything she told Laura. He had called Ian multiple times, begging him to end the missio
Astin thought he wouldn’t be affected by Laura anymore. She had hurt him badly before, but now he couldn’t bring himself to stay mad at her. His heart was at risk again. He needed to fight his feelings for her and avoid her before he got hurt again. He couldn’t stop looking at her from the staircase. He had just arrived from headquarters, and Laura clearly just woke up. Her messy hair and casual look caught his attention. She looked even more beautiful than before. Her figure perfectly matched her face and long legs. Why did she have to wear such shorts? It stirred something inside him. He calmed himself when he felt uncomfortable in his pants. She still had the same effect on him.Fearing she might catch him staring, he walked away, pretending to check his phone. When he passed by her door, he noticed her looking at him. She called out his name, but he ignored her. He closed his eyes as he walked past. He missed her sweet voice and felt the urge to hug her.He had to control himself.
“Mama, she's so beautiful. Can I marry her, Mama?” he innocently asked his mother. She had brought him to the Mayor's child's birthday party in their town. The young girl was stunning, like a princess in his eyes. And he saw himself as her prince.“Yes, Laura is indeed beautiful. Hmm, but you’re still too young to discuss marriage, my son. You can say that when you grow up,” his mother replied with a sweet smile, ruffling his hair.Since that night, he could not get the girl out of his mind. Laura Miller. She frequently visited their resort, and they became friends. But as they grew older, Laura became even more beautiful in his eyes. He always wanted to see her. When he turned ten, he asked his parents if he could take Laura on a tour around Caramoan Island. They agreed, as did Laura's father. They used one of his Daddy Sebastian’'s largest yachts. Since he was still too young, their families accompanied them.In fifth grade, his parents transferred him to Manila. He was devastated th
Since Laura was already pregnant, Astin didn’t allow her to continue working. Both families agreed that the wedding would be held again in Caramoan. At last, Astin and Laura's postponed wedding was set to take place.Laura leaned her head back, feeling sleepy. They were heading to Manila because she had a gown fitting scheduled for the next day. Their wedding was at the end of the month. For the first time in her life, she felt genuine excitement.Hernandez couple wanted to hurry the wedding before her belly grew too big. They were mid-flight, and she couldn’t stop yawning. Why did Astin have to pick her up at night? Her sleep was cut short.“Get some rest, sweetie. I’ll wake you up when we land,” Astin whispered and kissed her hair.“Okay,” she mumbled, barely able to keep her eyes open. Before she fully gave in to sleep, she heard him humming. She smiled to herself. Maybe he’d be better at lulling their future baby to sleep than she would. His soothing voice only made her sleepier. S
LAURA suddenly felt hungry when she smelt the food Andy was carrying. It came from the hotel’s restaurant—their Kubo restaurant. She was familiar with the menu and its aroma. She wasn’t mistaken. The food was indeed for her. She allowed Astin to feed her when she said that she was hungry.“Tell me, why did you rush to leave this morning? Was it because of Elisa?” Astin asked after giving her a bite. She pinched him quickly, worried his parents might hear. But his father caught it anyway. “Don’t mind my son, Laura. He and Elisa have always been close. She’s like a daughter to us, too. Besides, Elisa is my godchild, so don’t think anything of it. They’re like siblings,” his father said. She shyly smiled at his father, not knowing how to respond. It seemed he didn’t realize Elisa had feelings for Astin. “Yes, Tito,” she replied softly, finally finding the courage to speak. Her Uncle Kent smiled warmly at her. Astin said nothing more as she shot him a warning glare. A few moments l
“I love you so much, Astin,” Elisa’s gentle voice filled the room. She wanted to hear Astin’s response, secretly hoping he wouldn’t return her feelings. But anxiety gripped her—fear of what he might say.“Elisa... I love you—”She didn’t let him finish. She abruptly walked away, her chest feeling like it was about to explode. She quickly descended the stairs, startling the people in the living room with her haste. Her dad and Aunt Kendra called out to her, but she ignored them.Laura hurried out of the gate and walked briskly. She wanted to scream, but no sound escaped her lips. She wanted to cry, but no tears would fall. She passed by John’s group, noticing them only now as they appeared to be eating. John called out to her, but she didn’t look back. She kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, desperate to leave that place. She encountered some of their staff along the way and forced a bitter smile until she reached the hotel’s main gate. She kept walking until she reached the corner, wh
She was left stunned. She wasn’t wrong in her suspicions. Who dared to tell her to avoid Astin? Who did she think she was to dictate her actions? Elisa had no idea what was happening between her and Astin right now. Elisa couldn’t dictate what she should do. Did Astin know how Elisa felt? She needed to talk to Astin when he recovered. She didn’t want this kind of relationship. She wasn’t sure if Astin truly loved her. As long as other women surrounded him, she wouldn’t have peace of mind. Selfish as it may seem, she didn’t want to share him with anyone. She knew Astin loved her. Honestly, Elisa’s words had boosted her confidence—learning that Astin was assigned here because of her brought her joy. That gave her a reason to fight for him. She wouldn’t let Elisa take him away from her. She was climbing the stairs when she spotted Elisa entering Astin’s room. She had no idea where Elisa planned to sleep tonight. She waited for her to go inside before heading upstairs herself. She’d l
Before they even entered the gate, Elisa was already waiting for them. When she saw the blood on her hand pressed against his wound, she panicked. “Oh my God, Astin! I told you to take it easy and recover first!” Elisa exclaimed. She quickly assisted Astin as they climbed the stairs. Astin remained silent. His eyes were unfocused, and he looked like he was about to pass out at any moment. The people in the living room also panicked and followed them to Astin’s room. Since Aurora was a nurse, she immediately fetched first-aid supplies from downstairs. Laura’s father, noticing his drenched clothes, took over and helped him change. Laura and Elisa stepped out briefly. Laura’s hands trembled as she nervously bit her nails. Only now did it sink in—why hadn’t Astin told her he was injured? Why did he push himself earlier? She hadn’t even noticed he was in pain. Or maybe he was just good at hiding it. Elisa glanced at her, her face tense, prompting Laura to avoid her gaze. She lowe
