Lucy

My stomach plummeted at the thought. He smirked and approached, carrying his tray with him. The cafeteria bustled with activity as he drew closer. The glow of his watch seemed stronger, and my stomach started to turn as if my body knew that it made me sick.

"How kind of you," he said. "I'm not intruding, am I?"

"Not at all!" Sarah exclaimed, sliding over to make room beside her.

As he took a seat, I couldn't help but feel a ripple of discomfort. The glow of his watch flickered a little before starting to pulse. I didn't know what that meant. I stole a glance at Duke, who seemed unusually tense.

"So, how's everyone's day going?" Daedalus asked, his gaze lingering on me for a moment.

"Same old, same old," Sarah replied with a casual shrug. "I really appreciate how easy you made..."

Amy shook her head as Duke started to unpack his cooler and passed containers over to Amy and Sarah. Sarah fluttered her eyelashes and kep

LucyThe ride to the Blood Moon Estate was quiet. When we arrived, Amy and Sarah headed upstairs without much to say, and before Duke could even start upstairs, Hito had arrived."Hi, Maggie," Duke said warily. Hunter swooped over and landed on his shoulder."Hunter was... perturbed, and I can see why. How could you have come into contact with a magical leech?" Hito approached him. "Come with me. You'll be alright, I think.""Does that mean you won't work me to death?""On the contrary. You need to know how to deal with magical leeches of any caliber. That means extra training." Hito turned to me. "David isn't home yet, but I am sure there are snacks available in the kitchen if you would like."I shook my head. "I'm okay for now. I'll wait."He nodded. "Come on, then. It will be a short session."Duke groaned. "Every time you say that, it means it'll be intense as hell, and I'll probably oversleep again.""

LucyI approached Duke, who looked up at me with a tired but welcoming smile. He slumped back in his chair."Hey, Lucy," he said, his voice raspy. He blinked slowly, like he was barely keeping his eyes open. "Wanna talk about the professor with the glowing watch? Faust, right?"I hesitated for a moment, wondering how to broach the subject. Then, I decided to dive in headfirst with a topic that actually wouldn't make me feel antsy."You and Tom."He blinked at me before rolling his eyes. "This again.""Who's Tom?"Trent fell into a seat near us, looking exhausted. His eyes were red-rimmed even though they were practically glowing with anger."Duke has an admirer," I said and took a seat. "Are you okay, Trent? You look…"His lips twitched. "Like shit? I know. I feel like it, too, but I'll be okay." He titled his head. "You don't look too great yourself."I winced, thinking back. Then, I sat at t

LucyThere was no doubt in my mind that Duke was running through every interaction he'd had with Tom, but I couldn't believe that he was just an operative. Tom's interest in him had seemed so real. Then again, when he'd asked for my help, what exactly had he been asking my help with?Help in keeping an eye on Duke? Help with getting them together? And what about the drinks they were supposed to be getting together? Was that just something to help his cover along, or something real?"Sting operations?""And protection operations," Trent said. "Since... a while ago, the covens and other entities under the Council have put together operations to watch over assets they're looking to acquire. People with special talents and potential."His lips twitched. "While we haven't been told that there is someone assigned to either of you, I wouldn't be surprised if that's because they've been instructed to act in an unofficial capacity."

LucyWe left the garden and headed down the quiet hallway toward the ballroom."Trent told me a bit," David said. "I'll have Hito talk to Duke more about the situation."I worried my lip. "Is there any way to know for sure if someone has been assigned to watch Duke or me? And who they are?""What's on your mind?" David asked, his eyes reflecting a genuine curiosity."I just... I worry about Duke," I said.David nodded. "He's been through a lot. But he's strong, Lucy. He's stubborn and cagey at times, but he's strong. He'll talk about it when he's ready.""Cagey," I said. "Wary. I wonder if I'm being there enough for him.""Hey," David said gently. "Duke knows that you love him. That when he's ready, you're all ears. He knows that because you're the first person he contacts when he needs to escape here. If it wasn't for him spending so much time with Hito, you'd probably always been the first person he tells when s

TonyI went to lunch a little later than most of the office. I had taken to doing so to avoid the rush and running into too many people. I was hoping for a smoother afternoon. My phone hadn't rang all day, thankfully. I hoped that meant that Quillan was settling into the daycare well and that the rest of Blue Moon had gotten the message that they would just have to deal with the nonsense that they'd taken on for themselves. As I entered the coffee room, planning to get an afternoon cup, a man I vaguely recognized from around the office looked up at me. His jaw was set. He eyed me with suspicion as he set the coffee pot back down, empty. He was dressed in slacks and a button-down shirt. His badge was clipped to his belt, but there was something vaguely familiar about him that I couldn't place. The way he looked at me made it obvious that he wasn't thrilled to see me, though I nodded in acknowledgment of his presence all the same. It felt like he was

Tony"Certain potions," I corrected. "There's a... let's say, a giant deficit in the werewolf community for potions and medical supplies. We tend to get what little medicine we can from witches, but it's at such a high price that we often don't, and because werewolves have more in common with humans--""You think you'll have an entry into the human pharmaceutical niche.""I think so, but I don't have access to all of Green Corp.'s R&D information: supernatural and not."He nodded. "Well, simply put, Green Corp's R&D is entirely supernatural."I blinked. "Well... that could change some things.""In a good way?"I tilted my head. "It depends on how the interface between Green Corp and the human agencies works out."He scoffed. "Humans run their tests on it and put a stamp on it. There's an inspection or two, but no lab these days is using cauldrons."I snorted. "Fair."He leaned back, studying

MattFuck. I'd fucked up. Just thinking about the way Peter looked at me made me want to hide somewhere and die from the shame. The fucker had the nerve to actually look concerned after halfway interrogating me.Even without that, he had definitely seen the blood running from my nose.To make matters worse, Nurse Greenleaf was looking at me as if she was seconds away from hauling me into a bed and strapping me down.Under another circumstance, I probably would have been game, but not like this. She gave me a wad of gauze. "Your eye."I blinked and winced as I felt something thick and wet in my eye. I pressed it to my eye and pulled it away. Everything in me seized, panicked, and went completely still. I couldn't breathe.Blood. A lot of it, like something out of a human horror movie--me crying tears of blood.I hadn't felt it.Had Peter seen it?Would he get in contact with Tony? With Oren? What the hell was I going to do?Suddenly, something warm was cupping my face, and her eyes wer

MattMy blood ran cold at that, and I met her gaze. I hadn't been letting myself think about it."And if you're the one who's always kept things in the background running smoothly, if he's that dependent on you, whether he realizes it or not, what do you think he's going to do if you die?"I blinked. The thought set an ache in my chest that I couldn't bear."What about being an outpatient? He's got a job. He can't keep an eye on you all the time.""And me? I'm unemployed at the moment. You expect me to hang out here for hours at a time."She scoffed at me. "Unemployed isn't the same as broke."I chuckled. "No, it's not, but don't you think we should save financial talks until at least the fifth date?"She cocked an eyebrow. "You expect to live long enough to make it to the first the way you're carrying on?"I hissed. "That almost hurt.""Good." She shook her head. "There are ways we can make it work. I can help you coordinate things to make sure Tony has the support he needs so you ca

LucyThe morning sun, a mischievous wink through the blinds, painted golden stripes across our bed. I snuggled deeper into the warmth of David's embrace, the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest a soothing lullaby. He slipped his hand across my lower back. The warmth of his bare skin against mine set a spark of pleasure through me. He rumbled low and content into my hair. “Wake up,” David rumbled. He kissed my head and twined a curl around his finger. “We have things to do.”“You shouldn’t have kept me up all night.”He chuckled. “You didn’t say that last night.”I nudged him. He dipped his head to nip my lips. “You know, if it’s too much, you can always tell me to slow down.”He’d been saying that for five years now, and I never found a reason to tell him to. He knew that. His eyes flickered between colors. I nipped his lower lip. “Give me a reason.”He smirked and rolled me onto my back. “To slow down or…”“To get up,” I said as he kissed

LucyI sat on the cold stone, watching her, but she didn’t move another muscle. I didn’t know how long it had been, but it didn’t matter. The spectral glow around her was starting to dim, and my mind was just too stressed to do too much thinking. The light of the ritual, the spell I’d used, the blood on my hands all flashed through my mind, and part of me wondered if it was all just a dream. I looked down at the stained and ruined gown. The armor was as pristine as ever, but most of the embroidered roses were torn or stained. This dress would never be white again, let alone whole. I flicked a piece of the long, gossamer fabric and shook my head. I really liked this dress.“Lucy!”I turned my head toward the sound of David’s voice, wrung out and relieved to hear him. He was rushing through the air towards me. He dropped down a few feet from me, looking so worried I could cry.I smiled at him as he dropped to his knees beside me and threw his arms around me,

LucyI sailed through the air, landing with a jarring thud within the ritual circle. With a trembling hand, I pushed myself up, my senses on high alert. A figure, cloaked in darkness, appeared in front of me. My blood ran cold. Selene."Well, well, Lucy," her voice, honeyed yet laced with venom, slithered into the darkness. "Thank you ever so much for making this easy at last.”I grit my teeth. I wouldn't go down without a fight. Straightening my shoulders, I met her gaze, my voice shaking but resolute. "You underestimate me.” “No, Lucy,” her voice dropped, and a cruel smile twisted her lips. "You underestimate me.” The chanting grew louder around me. I lunged for the necklace, my fingers grazing its cold surface before Selene snatched it away, a triumphant gleam in her eyes. But that touch, fleeting as it was, ignited something. I felt her pushing at my mind. I felt her shoving me back until I could see the forest from before, and we were fighting in a ci

MattMy vision pulsed and flickered, a strobe light of pain blurring the edges of reality. Tony rained blows down on me, slashing with claws. Each hit chipped away at my resolve and my control, leaving behind a raw desperation to end this quickly. My armor protected me from most of the damage, but still. He was always the stronger of the two of us. I thought it was just because he was the older of the two of us, but this was different. I thought for sure he was going to bite off my head. Then, a flash of golden light arced through the air, and a spear lanced past my shoulder, catching Tony square in the chest. I turned back to see Ginevra hovering in the air. Her golden dress glowed as she passed me with a glowing winge spreading from her back. What the absolute fuck?Tony staggered, falling to the ground, and Dad darted forward, encasing Tony in a shimmering web of light. The wave turned to chains. He thrashed and howled, straining against the magical bonds, but t

LucyPeter's breath hitched, rasping, and shallow, then deepened into a cough that wracked his battered body. His eyelids fluttered, eyelids so pale they were almost luminous in the dim torchlight. He struggled to get up, leaning on his Spear and on Michelle. The light pulsing through the Spear rippled over his skin. He let out a soft sigh and stumbled a little. “Peter?”“I... It’s gone.”“What?” Michelle gasped as his hair started to change, losing the gray color and growing dark. His face turned younger until I was sure that he was all of twenty-something. He grew a bit taller, too, bigger until his shirt strained against his chest and his buttons popped. He flushed. “Well… that’s not…” He cleared his throat as Michelle smiled up at him. “So this is what you looked like in your youth?”He scoffed. “I’m much younger than you think.”He grunted, pressing a hand to his side. “Wish the Spear would heal the wound, though.”I winced. “Sorry… it’s a

PeterMy feet pounded a frantic rhythm against the uneven earth, branches whipping at my face, thorns tearing at my clothes. How long had I been running? How much further did I have to go? I didn’t know, and it didn’t matter so long as I got there. My lungs burned, legs screaming in protest, but still I ran. The trail of blood behind me and the patchwork of wounds across my body, chunks of missing and regrowing flesh, weren’t my concern right now. The creature—the wolf was after me, and unlike before, it didn’t seem willing to back off or slow down. It was going to kill me, and what happened after that was anyone’s guess. Behind me, the guttural snarl of the wolf echoed through the trees. Too close to be comfortable. Too close to make sense. This was too much like that dream, but worse. So much worse. The sky was a kaleidoscope of images I could barely make out. They flashed in the sky and in my vision, making it hard to see. I saw Lucy. I saw Michelle. The long

LucyAdrenaline surging, I grabbed Michelle and pulled her after me deeper into the inky depths of the tunnel.“Quick!”She panted. “What’s going on? Peter—”“He’s possessed,” I said. “Just keep running for now!”I saw my Allison up ahead, leading me down another tunnel. Behind us, I heard Peter's guttural snarls, the rhythmic thud of his feet echoed eerily in the confined space. We had to lose him and the other one quickly, but we didn’t seem to be putting enough distance between us. Panic coiled in my gut, urging me to run faster and push my body beyond its limits. Michelle kept up relatively well. We twisted and turned, navigating the treacherous path by torchlight and the spectral murmurs of White Moon's fallen. But the passage seemed to twist back on itself. When we were back at the forked path, the faint light that had been illuminating the tunnel went out, plunging us into darkness.Michelle shuddered. She drew closer to me and tightened her grip on m

LucyI was back in that house with that couple that adopted me. I felt the floorboards creaking as I went downstairs. I saw the men in suits. I shrieked, turning. Not again. I couldn’t be back here. Where was David? How had I gotten back here? I looked down. I wasn’t… wearing the dress or the armor. I had no daggers. My hair was just as uncombed and dry as it had been then. When I looked in the mirror, the skinny young woman who had barely had anything more than ramen and school lunch stared back at me. My stomach lurched. The door opened, and I turned to run, knowing what was about to happen. I dug my heels in as dark shadows pulled me towards the door. I felt myself being lifted onto someone’s shoulders. I fought and kicked, but all my training and all my strength were gone. I saw the calendar on the wall, but the date was different. It wasn’t my birthday. It was the day of the Crescent Moon Festival. I screamed, grabbing anything I could manage. Then, Sele

Then, all hell broke loose. The shimmering barrier around the Ball faltered, rippling like a pond, before collapsing entirely. Hunters poured into the arena, their snarls blending with everyone's shocked gasps. “Defensive measures, now!” I yelled, my voice carrying over the sound of the attack. A group of dragon shifters took to the sky as my blade clashed with the first hunter. How had they gotten through the barrier? I saw a flicker of a ghost and growled. “Selene!” I shoved the hunter back, slicing through him before sending out a shockwave of air. She’d been behind this, and maybe she’d been planning this for years, using the werewolf virus to spy on the preparations. It would make sense to try and get rid of me. I was the direct descendant of Fenris. More than that, it was their movements. Each and every one of them moved e
