MAXINE

My heart fluttered and I cursed myself for it. I had to stay focused but his touch and his words made it so hard. He pressed another kiss to my lips.

A moment later, I pulled back and stepped out of his embrace. “Thank you, Ronan,” I said.

He smiled back, his eyes filled with something I didn't want to name. “Anything for you, Maxine,” he replied.

And as I turned to leave, I felt a pang in my chest. A small part of me wanted to stay and I wondered if I was making a mistake. But, I pushed it aside. I couldn't afford to second-guess myself now. I've come so close.

I took a deep breath and steadied myself. I stepped out of the room and threw a smile at Ronan over my shoulder before the door closed behind me. I had to remember all that was at stake.

And I couldn't let myself forget again.

The guard escorted me through the corridor. I didn't know where her new room was and today was my chance. I was surprised that Ronan agreed so easily.
