MAXINE

The next phase of the plan required complete precision.

We didn't need a small amount of luck. I clutched the objects Zel gave me. The leather pouch hung at my side. Each piece was carefully prepared, imbued with Zel's magic. Each one was intended to bend the magic enough to give us an edge against Ronan.

I kept my face composed as I made my way through the halls. I had managed to lose the guard with me by entering into a bathroom. I entered the male bathroom and when I heard him try to check up on me in the females, I slipped away.

I didn't want to draw attention. The guards were everywhere. Their eyes were trained to notice even the smallest change in routine. I have to be very careful.

The first location was a small room. I dropped the object in a corner and quickly left. I moved on quickly. As I passed through a seldom-used sitting room, I heard footsteps approaching. I hid behind a large, dusty curtain, holding my breath.

Two guards pass by, chatting about their next shift

MAXINEAs I turned to leave, Varis called my name. I paused and turned back to look at him, trying to mask the anxiety I felt. The look on his face was unreadable.“Maxine,” he began, “I just have one question: are you truly in love with Ronan?”The question caught me off guard so, I gave him a small smile. “No,” I said even though my heart raced. “It’s all part of an act.”As I said that, I knew it was a complete lie. But they couldn't know that. Kris crossed his arms over his chest. His brows were furrowed. “You’re a damn good actress, then,” he said. “But why not tell Liam the truth? He deserves to know what you’re doing that you’re on his side.”My breath caught in my throat for a moment. I felt the guilt deep in my chest. Liam... “No,” I replied, shaking my head. “He doesn't have to know. He’s better off hating me. It’s easier this way.”Varis frowned, not getting it. “Easier? For who, you? It would be easier to have Liam’s trust.”I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck, searching

RONANI went to Maxine's room early the next morning, just as she was coming out of the shower. I watched Maxine as she sat on the chair, her back to me. Her dark hair was cascading down her back like silk. She was. Running a comb through her hair. Just that simple gesture. There was something about her that drew me in. It was something I still couldn't quite place. She was different from the others. More dangerous somehow and more intoxicating. For a moment, I wondered what was running through her mind. The look on her face gave nothing away, as usual. But there was just something about her. I decide to break the silence.“Maxine,” I called out.“Hmm?” She replied, not looking at me.“How about we get out of here for a while?” I suggested. She looked over her shoulder at me, pausing as she combed her hair. She looked surprised. Her eyes narrowed at me in suspicion. I could see the question in her eyes. “Out? Like outside the mansion?” she asked, trying to clarify.I smiled, leaning a

RONANLater that evening, we arrived at the restaurant I’d reserved for dinner. It was one of the most exclusive places in the city. Only the elite masses could dine here. It was the kind of place that made people feel special and untouchable.Maxine stepped out of the car. The black gown flowed around her like liquid water. I felt a bit of pride. She belonged here, in this world of power and privilege. She fit in perfectly, even if she didn't realize that yet.I offered her my arm and she took it without hesitation. We walked inside and a waiter immediately showed us to our table. Heads turned as we entered. People whispered and stared, but I ignored them. Tonight, it was just about Maxine and me.We were seated at a private table, away from prying eyes. I ordered the best wine they could offer. Candles were lit on our table, casting a glow on her face. I just sat there, watching her.“I've never been to somewhere this fancy before,” she noted, looking around at the place.“We should

MAXINEThis was the first time the eye of the ancients was intruding into my personal life. I would have to find the time to meditate to see what was up.Ronan noticed. “What's wrong?” He asked. My wolf had been trapped for so long. I don't know how much longer she could take.“I just felt a jolt of cold,” I lied, rubbing my arms. Ronan took off his jacket immediately and draped it over my shoulder. The car comes up front and we don’t speak as we make our way back into the car. There was something in the air between us that wasn’t there before. It was electric and charged. The ride back to the mansion was quiet but it was a comfortable silence. Besides, the guards were up front and we couldn't talk much. But, I could feel that I had his attention. When we finally pulled over at the house, Ronan stepped out first, coming around to open my door. I took his hand and let him help me out of the car. We walk up the stairs, our footsteps perfectly matched. He walks me to my room and stops ju

MAXINEIt had been weeks since I started planting the objects Zel gave me. Every day, I moved carefully through the estate and when the guards didn't notice, I placed the enchanted items where they’d go unnoticedWith each day that passed, my sense of urgency increased. The pieces were all coming together but now, with the final phase in sight, the pressure was suffocating. I wasn't sure I could do it.I hadn’t seen much of Zel these past few weeks. But today, we were going to meet one last time to go over everything. We had to be careful and secretive. There was no room for mistakes at this point.I got Ronan to let me see her.The guards escorted me to her room where she was waiting. Zel sat on the bed, her eyes flickering to me. I took a deep breath and stepped forward. She stood to her feet and embraced me. “You're here,” she said, as she let go of me.I nodded. "Everything’s in place. The objects are where they need to be."Zel nodded too. “I know. I can feel them. You did well.

MAXINEThe days after that, I spent most of them with Ronan. I was trying to take my mind off the fact that we were carrying the plan in three days. But, I felt like I was lying to myself.I wanted to enjoy the final moments I was having with Ronan. I wore the ring he gave me. It sat there on my middle finger while he kissed me or talked about a future where we would be together. It was weird coming from Ronan. Gone was the cold Alpha, now he was replaced by this warm man who talked about a future, who even hinted at raising kids.I was such a bad person. I knew that. I was tricking him, playing along, and acting like I would be with him for a long time. I had promised him but it was all a lie. When he talked about having a daughter like me, the air was knocked out of my lungs. The look in his eyes had been so hopeful and there and then, I wanted to confess to him that it was all a ruse and that I just wanted to escape. All this lying was making me sick to my stomach. Finally, the thi

He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into his chest, his chin on my head.“Maxine?” He called, quietly.“Hmm?” I asked, lifting my head just slightly.“You're the best thing to ever happen to me.” He began, trailing off. I thought he was asleep until he said, “I love you.”It felt like my heart was ripped out and stepped on. I didn't say anything back. I just couldn't.I waited in his arms until his breathing deepened. The drug in the vial was working. Still, I waited. I could just stay here and forget about the plan. He was already asleep. What would it take me to sleep too?But I had my part to play.Slowly, I took his arms off of me and untangled myself. My eyes stung with tears but I ignored them. I kissed his forehead. "Goodbye, Ronan," I whispered, “I love you too.”I walked out of his room, quietly. The guards were gone but I knew what to say if I ran int

The white-haired girl squeezed her hand. Maxine turned to look at her and offered her a small smile. That was when she caught me staring. She looked away, taking her eyes back to the window. It left me confused. Was she pissed at me? I was the one who had the right to be mad at her. She had chosen him over me. Well, the distance between us was necessary.I didn't know what I would say or do if I were sitting next to her. Kris took a sharp turn, causing Maxine to grab the handle of the car door. MAXINEI got a job working at the pack hospital again. This time, I signed up to be a real medical practitioner. I was going to become a midwife. There were a few familiar faces at the hospital and lots of new ones.Still, I was grateful to Ronan for giving them this opportunity again. That evening, I walked back into my apartment. The dead herbs were still in a box on the floor in the kitchen. I wondered if I would go back. I used to pick herbs and sell them to women who wanted to get pregnant. It felt like eons ago. Times were simpler. Back then, I saved lives not help take them. That was a time when I didn’t have blood on my hands.I sighed, running my fingers through my hair. I wanted my simple life again. It was simple but everything made sense. I didn't have to try to untangle myself from this mess that was my reality.A knock on the door brought me back. Zel was back from work. She worked as a bartender a little while from our apartment. Zel had gotten the job. After the manag

MAXINEI nodded, not trusting myself to speak without crying. Ella was right. I needed to let myself grieve. The love I once had for Ronan still occupied my heart.Lindsey reached out and held my hand. "We’re here for you, Maxine."I squeezed her hand, grateful for their support. They were right. I didn’t have to go through this alone. I had them.Maybe it wasn't so bad after all.***Going back to my old life felt like stepping into a strange place. There was the feeling of losing something. My apartment felt like a place from a faraway memory. Zel was gone and I was feeling so sad.I was back from saying goodbye. I unlocked the door and stepped inside. The space was just as I’d left it. There was still dust over everything. At least, I had something to do with my time.I took a deep breath. I hadn't lost everything. I was still okay.I began to clean up slowly. Lindsey stopped by to help me out and together, we covered a lot. As I was cleaning, I heard a knock on the door.“Are you

MAXINEI wanted to believe her that everything would be okay but deep down, I felt guilt and grief. This was my fault. I pulled back from her and wiped my eyes. I gave her a shaky smile. “It doesn’t feel like it.”She cupped my cheek. “Everything isn't always as it seems, my dear. But, I can tell you one thing I know for sure.” She said.“What's that?”“It's not your fault. I'm sure you don't know where to go from here, what to do, or where you belong. You want to come with me, you want to continue your life back at the place where you and Zel liked and you want to go back to how things were in this pack.” Cinder explained.“But, I see you staying here. This is where your strength lies, where hope lives, where you have friends and support.” She lowered her eyes and winked. “It's where you have a future.”“And, we'll always be here for you to fall back on, regardless of what happens. We're your home away from home.” The Luna Queen said, putting her hand on my shoulder. “I'm very proud.

MAXINEI didn't feel anything. No pain from a stab whatsoever. I looked between us and that's when Ronan smiled. His lips were close to my ear and he whispered, “I would never hurt you on purpose, love.”I didn't know when I screamed.Ronan collapsed into my arms, taking the both of us down to the ground with him. I tried my best to hold his head up on my lap. My eyes traveled down to the blood pouring down the stab wound in his belly.“Ronan,” I called, tears filling my eyes and rolling down my cheeks. He had stabbed himself. My hand shook as it hovered over the wound. I didn't know what to do. The dagger was in his chest.Ronan had chosen death. Death over a life without me.“Maxine…” he called, his voice unnaturally calm for someone who was dying. He reached up to touch me and I guided his hand to my cheek.“I'm here, I'm here,” I cried. “I'm sorry,” I whispered the last part. My hands shook as I held him. I never wanted this. I didn’t want him to die.Ronan gasped. He looked up

MAXINEI held my breath as Ronan kept his eyes on mine. When he was close enough, he stopped. Neither of us said a word. The battle continued around us but I couldn't get myself to make the first move.He didn't either. I wondered if it was hard for him to see me. I wondered if he thought he could fight me. I also wondered if he thought that he could kill me.I spoke up first. “Ronan,” I called. My voice was sounding more longing than I wanted.I missed him, to be honest. I missed sitting down in the quiet and reading books. Strangely, I missed making his cinnamon coffee.Ronan didn't say anything. Instead, he took a step closer. “You don’t have to do this,” he said. There was no hurt, no anger in his voice, just nothing but kindness. I wished he would yell. I wished he would curse me and call me evil for everything I've done.“Come with me.” He said, softly. I heard it regardless of the noise. “We can fix this, Maxine. We'll leave everything behind together.”It sounded so good. But,

MAXINEHe caught me off guard. It meant that he still cared about me. I didn't focus on that though. “I won’t, I promise,” I replied. We stood there in silence for a while, neither of us knowing what to say. I could feel it though. I could feel it. The unspoken feelings and questions we didn't have the time to ask.Or we didn't dare to ask, I guess. After everything that had happened, I still wasn’t sure where we stood. I said I was okay with him hating me but, I didn't know anymore. The lines between us were confusing now. I didn't know how to fix that. But now wasn’t the time to focus on that. We had a mission and that was a priority. Every other thing could come after. We would cross that bridge later. For some reason, Liam stepped closer and I held my breath. “Regardless of what has happened between us, out there?” He said, “No matter what happens, we’ll get through this together. Do you understand?”I nodded. “Together,” I repeated. Before I could say anything else, Zel appeared

They told us to come to them if we faced any issues.Sleep didn't come easy because my mind was entirely on Ronan. I didn't know how I was going to face him again after betraying his trust. But, I knew I couldn't sit out of this fight. The sun had not even risen when I was woken up by the sound of Liam's voice. He was given instructions and I heard more footsteps around the house than the number of people I had seen the previous day.It meant that Liam was already up and gathering the troops. I could hear him giving commands like it hadn't been two months since he was last in power. He was a natural-born leader. He carried this air of authority around him.He was giving orders, explaining ranks and positions for this fight. Every single detail was important to winning.Zel was still asleep, of course. She wasn't a wolf so she wouldn'

MAXINEI chuckled bitterly. “What about now?” I asked. “Will you take me back now that I have a wolf? Isn't that what you've always wanted?”His eyes widened slightly but he kept himself composed. “That would be unfair to you. It would be wrong. If you want to come back to me, I will take you but the choice is yours now. You have a choice and I see now that I was wrong. I’m so sorry, Maxine. I hope you can forgive me.”Tears welled up in my eyes. I hadn't thought about this but I let the anger roll away from me. He was still family. He was my father. “I forgive you. You're my father, whether you abandon me or not.” I said.“Thank you, Maxine.” He said. He reached for me hesitantly. I would have settled for a handshake but he wrapped his hands around me.
