Cole was terrified.

He had never seen anything like this, and now Syanna was passed out in his arms on the floor, after crying for bloody murder.

He had no idea what happened to her, or what she saw, because the day was still in full swing, with the dragons now playing their odd version of football against the werewolves.

But something was definitely wrong with her, and Cole didn’t think Syanna was losing her mind.

“I think we should go,” Cole finally said, trying his best to stay composed with an unconscious Syanna in his arms. “I don’t think it’s safe to be here any longer.”

Isaac, who looked just as terrified, nodded slowly. “Yeah, I think we should.” He gulped, then glanced at the door, at which he flinched.

“What’s wrong?” Cole asked, seeing the sadness and fear in Isaac’s eyes even more than before as he stared at the door.

“I’m sorry,” he mumbled. “I didn’t mean to, but you were so secretive, and I just wanted the best for you. I didn’t mean to hurt you, Joanna.”

“What?”

Syanna has broken a lot of rules in my lifetime. She wasn’t always the innocent, quiet girl that everyone thought she was. In fact, when she was sixteen, she was in her most rebellious stage, when all her friends were talking about college, and she felt left out knowing she wouldn’t ever go to a normal college, miles away and wear an oversize jersey with her face buried in her notes at two in the morning, somewhere in her dorm. She had made quite a mess with her high school reputation, but made it up in her senior year. Now, she was feeling rebellious again. But it wasn’t because she felt like her life was being taken away from her without any say of her own. It was because her truth was practically stolen from her this time. And she was getting it back. The sports day was in full swing when they left. They had to show be there at first, not to draw suspicion to themselves. Cole was the first one who left, smiley because no one would believe that Cole would be interested in a day

What the hell happened? One minute Syanna was fine, and the next, everything was dark. Her head pounded as she moaned and rose from the bed, holding her head as if it would fall off any second. It sure felt like it would. She glanced around, noticing that she was in her room. But the weird thing was, she was in Juliet’s bed, and Isaac was in her bed, fast asleep. That, indeed, was weird. She glanced around, noticing that they were alone, but she could tell that someone else was recently here. “Isaac?” she mumbled through a groan. “Isaac, wake up.”Isaac, too, groaned but remained in his position. Syanna threw a pillow at him, and he shuffled a bit. “Wake up! What happened back there.” “I don’t know,” he mumbled with his face down on the pillows, so his voice was muffled.” Ugh, my head.” Syanna sighed. “Same. Where’s Cole and Genevieve?”He finally lifted himself up and looked at her with sleepy green eyes. “They were secretly in love all this time and knocked us out so they co

Dances. Syanna had been to her fair share in high school and always found them completely boring or entirely unnecessary. Yet, being at Unici made her long for something so simple and mundane. The buzz around the school had been centred on this very dance, and this year’s theme was ‘Eclipse.’ How ironic. Syanna had no idea what happened between Isaac and Genevieve, but she did notice the tension when they left her room yesterday. Since then, she hadn’t seen Genevieve, and Isaac decided to sit the dance out. It was odd behaviour for Isaac, but she supposed everyone had moments. What was even weirder, was that Isaac could no longer read her mind as of this morning. It was odd. It was extremely odd and terrifying, considering the fact that yesterday when they woke up, he read her mind with ease. This led Syanna to believe that something else was amiss with her mind. There was no way that Isaac’s powers could work on her today, and then simply don’t another day. There had to be a rea

She hoped she was wrong. Gosh, she really wanted to be wrong. But after seeing Juliet argue with the headmistress as if they were life-long friends stirred something in her. Why would a headmistress be talking to a student like that? It wasn’t a scolding, warning or anything that seemed appropriate if they aren’t somewhat acquainted. Yet, the more she thought about it, the more tortuous it became. Juliet had been there form the very beginning! She was one of her closest friends. She couldn’t be a betrayer right? But now, when Syanna thought about it, very single time that something happened, Juliet was somehow there, even if she wasn’t involved before. Her hands shook as she pushed the cover of the briefcase back, still holding the flashlight in her mouth. At first, Syanna was confused. All that was in the suitcase were packets of what seemed like candies. She took one from its holder and brought it to her nose. The scent of these ‘candies’ was familiar, but Syanna knew she hadn’t seen them before. Maybe Juliet liked them. Maybe they were her favourite snack. But why would Juliet have a briefcase full of candy, with a combination being the date of Syanna’s arrival at Unici? Heaving a sigh, Syanna held the flashlight in her hands so she could get a better look at a packet, and held it to her face so she could read what was scribbled on it. It was a date. Date two weeks from now. “Huh, that’s odd,” Syanna mumbled, before grabbing the very first packet in the third row, since the other two rows were empty. And as she suspected, the date on the packet was tomorrow’s date. So, it was a daily dosage of candy. But what kind of cand

“Juliet.” Syanna froze, book in hand and all, as Juliet blocked the way out. Like Syanna, her eyes were wide in shock, as if she hadn’t expected to see Syanna here. Then, her eyes dropped to the book clung to Syanna’s chest, and her eyes widened even more. “Syanna,” Juliet said, the shock evident in her voice. She cleared her throat. “What are you doing here?” Syanna stayed quiet, simply staring at the girl she thought was her friend all this time. Juliet cleared her throat again. “I see you’ve found the book. Where was it?” She let out a nervous laugh, but Syanna only shook her head. “You know where,” Syanna mumbled. “You took it, after all.” Juliet stiffened, and then her face glowed red under the dim moonlight. “N-no I didnt,” she stuttered. “You’re mistaken.”“Cut the bullshit, Juliet,” Syanna snapped, her anger finally blossoming. “You are nothing but a fake! You and the headmistress. I don’t know what you two are up to, but I want nothing to do with it.” Her shoulders

Cole was relieved Genevieve was back from the academy, although she won't talk about the demon attack on her last night. He tried to pry it out of her, but she remained tight-lipped. Cole couldn't blame her, though. His own experience with demons had taught him that sometimes, speaking about them could lead to even more trouble. While Genevieve locked herself away in her room, Cole headed out to find the demon that attacked her. He was determined to put an end to it before it harmed anyone else.As he roamed the streets, he kept his senses sharp. He could feel the demon's presence nearby, but it was elusive, flitting from shadow to shadow, never staying in one place for too long. It was like chasing a ghost. Finally, after hours of fruitless searching, Cole saw the demon. It was a hulking beast, towering over him, with skin as black as night and eyes that glowed like embers. Its wings were torn and ragged, and its claws glinted in the moonlight.Cole didn't hesitate. He drew his sword

Two hours had passed since Genevieve left, and Cole was begging to get antsy. He knew she didn’t walk there this time. She must’ve taken a portal or something, so she shouldn’t have taken to long to return. But Cole tried not to let it bother him so much. He had to stay calm. Yet, he couldn’t help his nerved. Because if something happened to Genevieve, then that meant he might never get Syanna back. And, hell, the thought was scary. He moved from his seat to the chair next to Syanna’s side of the bed, where he held her hand. He knew that her body was practically lifeless, and the real Syanna was inside of Isaac, but he couldn’t sit in front of Isaac and talk to her. It would just seem too weird. “Hey,” he whispered, caressing her cheek with his thumb. “I miss you, Syanna. But I’ll get you back, okay?” He kissed her forehead, and if he didn’t know better, he would’ve thought he saw Isaac’s lips twitch. Cole had to give it to the guy, he was a real friend. He didn’t think he wou

Part 2: The Vampire QueenRain. Gloomy weather had never mattered to Cole before. But now—somehow, he understood why it was always so dark, so cold and so sad. He started at the patch of dirt, hating how the soft patter of rain didn’t wash away the pain in his chest. Cole had no idea how it came to this… how he went from having the love of his life in his arms, to standing in the rain for an hour, staring at the ground. The open world didn’t feel as free as he had anticipated. Although he managed to leave Unici-him and Genevieve—the feeling of the wind in his hair and the bite of freedom on his ski didn’t feel like he had expected it to. Instead, it felt like bondage. It felt like pain, agony and everything in between, not having Syanna by his side. He and Genevieve left Unici two days ago before the headmistress caught onto them, taking Syanna and Isaac with them. Turns out, Genevieve knew of an old, abandoned house about five miles away from Unici. It seemed as if it had been

To say I was shocked was un understatement. I couldn't believe that all this time, so many people had been sent to kill my family. Including Anthony. I gulped and met his eyes, wondering if he somehow still wanted to complete that mission. But he simply continued the story, seeming completely out of it. “Yes,” Anthony confirmed. “But we had killed the wrong people. Your ancestors were smart—smart enough to stay in hiding well.” “But you had already murdered hundreds of people.” “It was about seventy people,” Anthony snapped, though the guilt in his face was evident. “Kids, elders… pregnant women.” “Oh my gosh.” Syanna couldn’t bear it. Dimitri ordered this sort of evil so he could save his own ass? “My mama was the first to fold. She wouldn’t do it a second time. My sister ran away, and I followed her.” “So, what happened?” Anthony sighed. “I didn’t find my sister

This couldn’t be happening. It just couldn’t. There was no way Syanna was unconscious in Genevieve’s bed, with no sign of life. She wasn’t even breathing normally, and it took everything in Cole not to burn this damn academy to the ground once and for all. “Why isn’t she breathing?” Cole demanded as Genevieve stood in front of the bed where Syanna had been lying unconscious for the last two minutes since they arrived. “She was bitten, Cole.” “What does that mean?” Genevieve seemed on edge, as if, for the first time ever, she didn’t know what to do. And Cole didn’t like that. He sort of depended on Genevieve to always know everything and fix things. But now, she was looking at Syanna as if she had no idea what to do, and it terrified Cole. He paced Genevieve’s room, pulling at the root of his hair as if they were an abomination to him. “It means,” she said, sounding on edge. “That the vampire venom is killing her slowly.” “That doesn’t make any sense!” He threw his hands in the

She felt like she’d been there for hours, when I had only been about twenty minutes. Syanna couldn’t believe someone had kidnapped her in the middle of the school. Wasn’t Unici supposed to be safe? Wasn’t it supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine for all species here? But she guessed not. Because now, she was in someone’s old, abandoned cabin, with a vampire and a large, large class. Syanna knew before he even said anything what his plan had been, but she didn’t want to believe it. Mark assured her that none of the vampires would hurt her or try and drink her blood for power. But he was wrong, and she was wrong for believing him. Mark couldn’t speak for everyone, and it was her mistake for thinking so. So this was the big thing that Cole felt was going to happen, huh? A vampire was hoping to drain her dry and use her blood for power. “You don’t have to do this,” she said for the umpteenth time as the vampire, who’s name she had known as Anthony, stared at her from across the ro
