*3 years later*
"Alaska, I'm home"
Jax’s voice reverberates around the cavernous space as he walks into the warehouse. It is unrecognizable from the empty, near rundown place that he walked into three years ago. It looks very much the same on the outside and anyone would still consider this an abandoned warehouse. Inside it is polar opposites.
Of course, it wasn't a quick process and they have only put the final finishing touches on it recently. It was a massive effort to get it to where it is now, to get them to where they are now and it wasn’t a rapid incline from the near unlivable space to the wonderland that appears in front of him now. It remained near uninhabitable for a long time.
He receives no reply, not a single sound can be heard, his face tilts up and he takes a deep breath in.
"I know you are here, I can scent you"
Jax’s eyes scan the once empty space that is now filled with training equipment, a set up that they never dreamed of having within the autumn pack. They use the upper space as much as the lower space. Wolves are creatures of the earth, yet they have not confined themselves in such a way.
Jax extends an arm directly out from his body as a stick comes flying at him, his large hand wraps around the fighting implement as his eyes continue to scan the area. One would think that the direction the stick came from would give away Alaska’s location, but she seems to live up high, moving around with a closer resemblance to a monkey than a wolf.
Finally, an agile figure propels herself out of her hiding place, a stick in her own hands. Jax calmly grips his own with two hands as he blocks the savage hit. The quality piece of timber bends and groans with the force but stays in one piece.
Alaska is dressed in only a deep red sports crop and a pair of lightweight sports shorts, revealing her long and streamlined body. She has visible muscles, slender and strong, her body is a lot different to that of the past. She has always had fitness and strength but she had softer curves, more sweet and feminine. Now she is lean and tight, but she is still as beautiful as she has ever been.
Her brown hair is longer than before, hitting the bottom of her shoulder blades as she goes through her movements. What proceeds is nothing short of an epic battle, with such brutality, but neither receives a single hit. The near new sticks are dented and scarred from the interaction.
As aggressive as the attack was, it stops just as quickly and calmly. Alaska takes the stick from Jax while wiping the sweat from her forehead.
"Dinner is in the slow cooker. I have training to do"
Alaska turns to replace the sticks in a large display of weapons, used purely for training purposes. Jax walks behind her and as soon as the sticks are in place, he grips her around the bicep, his touch is gentle but firm.
"Come and eat with me"
Alaska looks in Jax’s softened blue eyes and yields in a second. She hasn’t been able to say no to Jax many times in her life. He has one of those faces and it is always helped by the fact that he always wants the best for her, even when she doesn’t want it for herself, and also, the fact that he is her only friend in this life plays into it a lot.
"Fine, but I should’ve fought a little longer if I knew you were going to blink those blue eyes at me and make me cave to your whim"
Jax raises his eyebrows, a look of mock shock on his face.
"Are you telling me that my eyes are my secret weapon?"
Alaska rolls her eyes as she leads them toward the kitchen.
"As if you didn’t know, it is not impossible for someone to look so innocent and sweet without doing it intentionally"
Jax raises a hand to cover his heart like he has just been mortally wounded.
"Maybe I am just that innocent"
"Ohh please don’t make me gag"
Jax laughs as he deposits Alaska on one of the seats on the dining table before making his way to the kitchen. The dining table is a new addition and while they have space to put something large in, there has never been more than just the two of them, so it is just a small four-seater table with two of the seats stored away.
The run-down old kitchen with the shelves rotting away and the counter bowed and chipped is now replaced with a much larger kitchen with all the modern appliances. Sleek shiny surfaces with useable space. Jax takes two bowls out of the cabinets in a practiced manner and skillfully serves the food. He had never even made a piece of toast himself before it was necessary for survival. It was a rough start trying to gain skills at a rapid rate with no time, no money for food and looking after someone that had no interest in living much less eating, but he persevered and ended up a decent enough cook before Alaska was finally able to take some of the burden from him.
Jaxson walks around the kitchen island and delivers a bowl in front of Alaska before taking his own seat.
"Just once I would love to get home and call out to you, and instead of fighting for my life I would love nothing more than to see your smiling face, asking how my day has been"
Alaska looks up from her bowl, her fork still hanging out her mouth, she gives a toothy grin around the fork, a sinister look on her sweet face. She pulls the fork out with a flourish, placing it on the table as her elbows rest on the surface on either side of the bowl, her hands placed one on top of the other, her chin resting on the upper hand, her head slightly tilted, her long black eyelashes flutter exaggeratedly over her emerald green eyes.
"Ohh Jax you have returned from the big bad world back to me, my fearless leader. How was your day? Don’t leave a single thing out. I want to hear every thought and every emotion because I always take the non-violent approach"
Jax doesn’t even care about her sarcastic yet jovial tone as he stares at her eyes. They are shining in a way he hasn’t seen in a longtime. As her eyelashes flutter, his heart flutters at the same pace. Jax coughs into his tightly clenched fist to cover up the sound.
"Well, since you are asking in such an interested manner, I will let you know just how trying my day has been, how much perseverance it took to keep a calm half smile on my face in their presence, the tenacity displayed having to listen to the slimy voice saying sleazy things and pretend to be so completely clueless to the point that they must truly believe that I am an imbecile"
Alaska’s overly sweet, mocking face is gone, the glimmer in her eyes has once again disappeared, her hands fall onto the table and the fork returns to her mouth, this time her teeth grind against it in an aggressive fashion. Her tone so exageratedly cold that it is hard to believe the two voices came from one person.
"I forgot that was today"
Jax casts his eyes back down at his bowl, her happiness is so fleeting even after all these years, every time he thinks he has her back she disappears just as quickly again. He knew this conversation would have this effect, which is why he was trying to keep it as lighthearted as possible, even though it hurts her. He has promised himself to be as transparent as he can with Alaska. They are in this together, for better or worse. Shielding her from it will have no good end.
"They want to see you next time"
Alaska’s lips curl up into a snarl.
"I can’t play the part as well as you can, it makes me violently ill to be in the same room as them, to act like everything is alright, to smile at them, make light-hearted conversation"
Jax shakes his head not believing that for a second.
"You have always played the part better than me"
That is true, the first time that Alaska had to show her face alongside him he was terrified when she walked out after her preparations. He thought that just the mere thought of being in their presence, any progress they had made was lost again. It was only then that he noticed that she had made herself look worse than she was. She purposely deceived them in order to keep their guard down.
It was ingenious and he had no idea why he hadn't thought of such a thing.
He has followed that lead over all these years. At the start, it was easy, they were in such a bad way, there was no need to act, a few sets of clothing were worn through easily, the toiletries were barely effective, their lack of healthy eating and anyway resembling a good night sleep was a aspiration. But as they pulled themselves out of the quicksand which threatened to suffocate them both and progressed, they never allowed them to see that progress.
"I can’t do it again, it kills me every time"
"I know Alaska. I feel the same way. When I have to put up with their lies, their condescending tone and pretend I am something that I am not, hiding myself to make them feel superior and that they have won, it beats me down"
"We don’t have to put up with it Jax, this hatred is eating me up, they need to pay for what they have done. We are ready, I know we are"
Jax’s head tilts back as he looks toward the roof, trying to stretch out the tension, he has known for a longtime that this was coming and maybe Alaska is right, if they are ever going to be ready they are now. But he is finally comfortable in the life they have. They may not have everything they used to have, they may only have each other, but that is all he needs.Jax is terrified of losing her and going head to head is classified as a suicide mission, but saying no will just result in her moving forward without him, which he will not allow.Jax looks at his meal, the tasty dish only moments before is dull and tasteless now and he can barely choke it down, but he shows none of that on the outside, pretending it is the most interesting thing in the world. Right now he needs a moment to think and doesn’t want to engage in this conversation. He needs the perfect words, but just like so many times before, when it comes to Alaska he is drawing a blank.Alaska doesn’t wait for an answer ev
The week passes quickly and Jaxson really does regret it, not because Alaska is out on a death-defying mission, not because she has delivered something so brilliant that he can’t possibly say no. It is because she is so deeply immersed in the planning process that she doesn’t do much except disappear into her room and then reappear to eat and work only.It is hard for him to adjust to the sudden loss of her as his constant companion. Even when she was in such a bad state, she was there. She didn't need to say anything. She didn't need to smile or give him any emotion. Just being there was enough. When they first arrived, when she was just laid out in her room for months on end. The only difference was that back then he had free access to look after her. Sometimes it was like she didn't even know he was there, but at least he could be close. But now it's different. Instead of hearing, silence or sobbing, now he can hear progress. He can feel her happiness at the process and it makes i
Alaska eats her cereal so fast that she appears to be inhaling it, barely stopping to take a breath. She places her bowl on the sink before gripping Jaxson’s forearm and kissing his cheek."Only a quarter of who you are would still be a good man"Alaska doesn’t wait for a reply as she practically skips out the door with a smile on her face and her emerald eyes shining with sinister ideas, her whole persona is out of place in her outfit.Jax just stares at her disappearing figure long after she is gone. She touches him so softly, she says all the right words, but he is well aware that she never intends for them to mean what he wants them to.Jax stares at the photo on the wall, one of the two remaining photos of their previous life. He could have had so much more if he had listened to his father, one of his many regrets."Stop it Torin, I am well aware that her heart will always be with you…"Jax stares at the smiling face of his best friend, Torin’s arms wrapped tightly around Alaska o
Jaxson looks at Alaska as she emerges from her bedroom. He has been up half the night, just sitting on the sofa staring at Alaska’s door like he used to do early in the piece, sleeping on that broken old sofa waiting for her nightmares.Sleeping with one eye closed, wanting to get to her before it got too bad. The sofa is new and a lot more comfortable now, but right now the anxiety is very much the same.Jaxson stares at Alaska’s neat clothing and glowing face, her small amount of makeup is impeccable. Her lips look soft and subtle with a tint of pink. She looks healthy. She looks glowing. She looks a long way off all the other times that she has presented herself in front of the five. Admittedly, it is not often that she has had to show herself in front of them. Jax has to go once a week, but Alaska has only been requested as little as once every six months. Alaska may have good breeding and come from good bloodlines, but they expect very little from a female beta blood who would st
*Three years earlier continued*The large black wolf skirts the edge of the summer pack, just as he is about to head to the main entrance to be allowed in by the border patrol, he has a strange feeling down his spine. He has been to the summer pack many times before. Technically, the alpha, Valen, is his uncle. He is a couple of times removed but they all like to play on it. At one time, in Jaxson’s great-great grandfather's time, this was all one pack. The seasons pack, Jaxson’s great-great grandfather had four sons, which was incredibly rare for an alpha. The sons were very close in age, one set of twins and two separate on either side. The season's pack was incredibly large, to the point where it was nearly too difficult to protect the borders. All the sons were very similar in abilities, which made it hard for him to choose who was going to take the pack. The only logical solution was to split the pack into four smaller pieces and allow each of his sons to have a pack of their own.
Driving up to the summer pack has much the same feeling as that first time he re-entered it all those years ago and found out the depth of the betrayal. The people that he thought would be there for him, the ones that he considered family. The ones he considered good people. He thought it was bad then. But the more he learned, the more he thought about it, the worse it became. Jaxson's hands move without him releasing his grip in the slightest, the cheap plastic steering wheel making a sort of screeching sound under his hands. Alaska finally looks up from the radio and places a soft hand over his. "It is all going to be fine" Jaxson is like this every single time. It is like that same feeling of dread and clarity washes over him and then every time he has to swallow down all those intense feelings and smile at the scheming bastards that caused him to lose so much, the ones he actually went to as a savior were the ones that took it all away.He believed that this trip would help, b
Alaska just puts one sandal-clad foot in front of the other on the bitumen-paved driveway. Her hand brushes against Jax's large hand, grounding her just that little bit as hatred washes over her, it's so thick and fast. Sometimes it's a little harder to swallow down than others, but she manages to push it all into the pit of her stomach and put on her token fake smile. Back before all this, she didn't even know that a fake smile was a real thing she didn't understand what someone would even use such a thing for. She spent so much of her time smiling and having fun. No matter the workload or what life threw at her, she could still smile happily. Now it has just become a piece of her mask, a necessary item, better than any makeup at hiding the true feelings inside. A smile can hide a million truths. It is as necessary mask in her workplace as it is here. She looks up at the one dark-haired man who stands between his four golden blonde sons. There is no doubt that all five of them are
Valen smiles as the sweet girl kisses his cheek. She is skinnier now, but that is the only real difference he notices, maybe a little bit more hollow in the eyes, they just don't have the same glitter they once had, but that is to be expected. It is impossible for such an innocence to survive in such conditions.Everything is crushed, the beautiful flower is wilted. He feels silly for even suspecting them. It isn’t even like it is two together, it is one male and a weak female that, even though she could’ve had the talent and the bloodline to step forward and take her birthright, she chose to sit back and watch her mate claim the glory. She was pathetic then and while it is admirable that she pulled herself together to this point, expecting her to come out of those depths with anything more than a basic need to survive is overreaching. She couldn't take the title then and now she is the same, happy to sit back and let others lead while she hangs on for dear life desperatly trying not t
Jax has a way of saying something so self-depreciating in such a light and airy way it is hard to take it as seriously as it should be taken. Alaska barks out a laugh, her hip moving quickly to hit Jax playfully. At the same time the tension leaves her body completely. Of all the things that she expected him to say, it definitely wasn't that, and it makes what was the start of a really tough conversation a whole lot easier. This is Jax, the same person she has known her entire life, she doesn't need to make it so strange. "Haha what?…" Once Alaska focuses on the whole sentence and not just the amusement at the end, her heart strains for him. She hasn't really heard him speak about himself in such a way, and she is not sure whether he is making a joke of it or he actually believes it, it is hard for her to think that he could think so badly of himself when there is no one in this world that she thinks more highly of. "...You have a whole lot to offer. Never sell yourself short like
"What can I do for you Trip?""Draven just wanted to meet to discuss some things at the club tomorrow night"Jax just shrugs at Alaska with a questioning look. Alaska’s shock has faded completely, and her razor-sharp mind is working quickly. It makes sense that Draven would suspect them, and maybe he came to the conclusion much quicker than she gave him credit for, but the request doesn’t sound much like a summons and if Draven really knew the truth it wouldn’t be an exploratory meeting, they would be hunted and killed much the same as the rogues that surround them. Alaska just nods, the plan was always bound to change, while she has done her best to anticipate her adversary there is always going to be some discrepancy."What time would he like us?""Shall we say ten?""We will be there""Umm Jax?""Yes?""I am sorry to hear about Torin"Alaska’s eyes which were bright and filled with excitement, dull significantly. Jax scowls, he has not even spoken to Trip since the undertaking, jus
Draven draws in a deep shuddering breath as his excitement peaks, saliva drips off his large teeth, his canines itch in his jaw, as desperate as he is for that kill. He feels every stick and every stone under his large paws. Every single kill is like this, every detail, which would be mundane in any other circumstance is stored in his memory, a trophy of sorts as he cannot risk having any physical trophies that could link him back to this. His breath is so loud that it is the only thing that gives away his otherwise stealthy approach. It doesn't matter anyway, he is too fit, his body a precision killing machine, while his adversary is gangly, malnourished, untrained and unorganized. They make so many mistakes in order to protect their own life, bumping and hitting into each other in an effort to get away, slowing their own escape as well as offering up others as the first sacrificed. The slowest and the smallest of the group, the one that got shoved to the side by numerous other s
Draven sits in his office, his mind halfway between the disappearance of Hayden and the mess in the businesses. Something about Hayden’s disappearance just isn’t sitting right, is he neglectful, yes, irresponsible, most definitely, selfish, no doubt. But he isn’t usually so lax on contact, even if it is just to rub it in Draven’s face? Never. Not that Draven would care in the slightest. Personally, he can’t think of anything worse than finding his mate, but his disinterest has never stopped Hayden before.Draven has little interest in anything and yet Hayden still finds a way to make everything a competition. It may be a way of including Draven in some sense of normalcy, whatever it is, it is the way Hayden has always been. This?….This isn’t.Hayden is the first out of all the Barrow boys to actually find his mate is an accomplishment. They are all of an age that it should have happened long ago and then there are the older set of twins who would be the more logical pick if the goddes
Jax watches Alaska closely. For a moment he isn’t sure if there is actually danger lurking, because her expression is somewhat strange, maybe it is just more forced than usual, but he can’t feel another wolf around and if there was something that urgent he knows she would have linked him."Jax who is this?"Jax hears the question, not even knowing who asked it and not even wanting to take his eyes off Alaska for a second in order to confirm. It doesn’t matter anyway, just as their faces swirl into one, they all have the same voice. He answers the question without directing it at anyone in particular."This is Alaska… My best friend"Jax moves through the crowd of girls easily, unlike their usual state where they can’t get enough, they are shocked in place, he doesn’t notice as he wraps an arm around Alaska’s shoulder and pulls her close to him, planting a large kiss on her forehead.Even a blind man could see that there is something more than just a best friend relationship. Jax has a
Alaska sits in the exact center of a fixed bench on the side of the road, her arms spread along the either side of the timber backrest, her face angled up to the sky, her eyes pressed shut and a slight smile on her face as the sunlight soaks into her skin. She hasn’t felt like this in a long time, every moment has been spent working. So to even take a minute to just enjoy life is so incredibly precious. Now that she is in the process of making those pay, there is a weight lifted off her. The guilt at even showing a smile is decreasing, she has spent the whole morning attacking the businesses under the seasons banner, concentrating most of her efforts on the autumn pack, which, of course, is the easiest as she had intimate knowledge of the businesses before they were taken and they have really changed very little in that time, extras added and wealth added due to Draven's ruthless mind, but nothing that Alaska cannot unravel. She hasn’t attacked them so obviously until now, because she
Jax stares at her back for a moment as she walks toward her room, holding himself back from running to her and holding her. He has been putting even more effort into the training, but even with the exhaustion that comes from giving it his all, it doesn’t stop his mind running wild. The relationship in his mind is evolving so fast, but he is not sure it is the same for her, from pretending to be her boyfriend at the work function to acting like a couple in the airport. It is all getting harder. Walking through the airport like a real couple, the wigs didn’t matter, it was still her, it was still her scent, her warmth, it didn’t even matter that they were playing others, that they were hiding their faces from the camera, all that mattered was having a very happy Alaska so close to him, having her scent around him, her gentle touches.A true sense of what it would be like to have the impossible, to actually be with her.He knows that he is blowing all of it out of proportion as she is jus
Draven sends everyone out of the security room except Trip, who still hasn’t offered a word of help. For now there is nothing to say. The evidence is there but all it shows is that this place is a dead end. The manager and employees don't argue even though Draven technically has no right to be within such a space. While the nightclub falls under the season's banner, it is not under the autumn pack, he has no authority, yet no one has the guts to argue the point, they value their lives too much.Just being in the same room as him is suffocating enough and they are glad to get the freedom."Trip, copy all that footage and we will review it later"Trip isn’t very knowledgeable at computers, but at least knows that much. Draven picks up his own phone and calls his father."Was there any purchases that could help locate him?"Valen scrambles to log onto the banking app."Sorry I wasn’t set to review it until tomorrow…"Draven swallows down the insults that would be spewed at everyone else i
Draven and Trip don’t talk on the way to the venue. Trip is used to Draven’s way of operation. Between him and his three brothers, he drew the short straw to be placed with Draven. Of course, it wasn’t such a lottery, they themselves were thankful to be able to be betas in their own right which they never knew was possible growing up, so when the reject of the family was the one that was able to take such a role it was a double blow. When they were deciding between themselves who would go where, Trip was considered the best option to be able to get along with the man who has the ice-cold aura and dry personality. It is just lucky that Trip also admires Draven’s ability to stand out on his own within the family like that, especially when he was tied in birth to Hayden. The two walk one in front of the other into the closed night club without caring about such things as open hours or even common courtesy. Most nightclubs in the area come under the seasons banner in some way and this one
