Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Perfect Timing
On the third day, my memories started to decline. I constantly forgot what I was just doing or thinking. There were many times a day when I suddenly froze on the spot.

With much difficulty, I finally remembered that I wanted to keep the Lego set that Raven had destroyed.

Although I no longer had any hope my family would come to accept me, Grandma and I built the Lego set together. It was an important memory I had of Grandma. I would not allow them to throw such memories into the trash.

I frantically headed downstairs to see that the Lego pieces were still scattered on the floor in the living area. It dawned on me that the housekeeper was on a break, so no one was around to clean up.

I found a box and picked up the Lego bricks. It took me a long time since there were too many pieces.

When Mom returned home and saw what I was doing, she yelled with a scowl on her face, "What are you doing on the floor?! Can you be more ladylike? You'll embarrass us if we ever tell others that you're our daughter!

"This is what happens when you're brought up in the countryside! No manners at all! Your grandmother was a bad influence!"

I paused what I was doing. After calming myself down, I continued picking up the Lego pieces.

The Lego set was ruined. There was no way of putting it back together, but I still wanted it as a keepsake, so I tried to pick up every piece I could find.

Mom threw her things on the couch and barked, "Did you hear what I said? Why can't you be more like your sister and cause me less trouble?"

At that moment, I was going to pick up the last piece. Just when I reached my hand out, Mom stepped on the piece and looked at me with a darkened expression.

"Tomorrow is your sister's birthday. You'll make her a cake as an apology. Don't upset her."

She looked at the Lego piece on the floor in disgust as if she had just seen a cockroach.

"It's just a stupid toy. Throw it away. Don't just do nothing all day. Do you think we'll support you for the rest of your life?"

I looked at her stepping on the Lego piece. A huge grief overwhelmed me. I looked at her right in the eyes and chuckled self-deprecatingly.

"Mom, Raven and I are twins. Her birthday is also my birthday."

A pang of helplessness flashed across Mom's face.

I continued, "That piece of Lego that you're stepping on is the only gift you have given me in the past eighteen years. I was raised by Grandma because you and Dad couldn't care for two babies and you threw me to her.

"Grandma wasn't a bad influence on me. She was the best grandmother. I also don't think that I'd be embarrassing to the family."

Mom looked away shiftily and retracted her foot.

I picked up the final Lego piece and placed it in the box. Then, I looked up at Mom.

She was still avoiding my gaze. She said stiffly, "It's just a stupid box of Lego. Go and make your sister a cake. I'll just buy you a new one."

Since my parents became wealthy, a Lego set was nothing to them. It showed how unimportant I was to them.

They would rather buy me a new Lego set than let me celebrate my birthday with Raven.

I closed the box and carried it upstairs in silence.

I did not believe that Mom would buy me a new Lego set. Coincidentally, she never brought it up again. On the fourth day, I had forgotten a lot of things.I woke up to see the pieces of Lego on my bookshelf. I had no idea why they were there, but my instincts told me that they were important. I looked at the broken pieces. I asked myself, “If they were so important, why would you have destroyed them?”If I had destroyed them, perhaps they were not that important to me.I took the box of broken Lego pieces and threw it in the bin outside. Then, I returned to the kitchen to get busy for dinner that night. It was Raven's birthday. Mom told me to stay home to cook while she and Dad took Raven to the mall to pick out her gift. They only returned home at eight that evening.I was placing the cake on the table when I looked up to see Jason together with them. He was carrying shopping bags, looking at Raven dotingly, completely ignoring my ashen expression. My heart hurt a little. I

The trio who just barged into my room was baffled. The middle-aged man came to his senses first. He looked at me in annoyance and said impatiently, "Rachel Fleming, what the hell is going on? Stop playing dumb."He approached and reached his hand out to me. I frantically swatted my hand away and yelled, "I really don't know who you are!"I cowered in fear, looking at the faces of the strangers glowering at me. I was so terrified I wanted to hide. The middle-aged woman noticed the confusion in my gaze. She was so stunned she could not speak. As the middle-aged couple tried to pull me out of bed, the young man, who had been silent, suddenly said, "Mr. and Mrs. Fleming, why don't you head out first? Let me talk to Rachel."The couple looked at him before leaving the room in confusion. The young man pulled a chair next to my bed and took a seat. He then picked up an apple by the nightstand and peeled it. "Rachel, I know you're pretending. This won't solve anything. Stop with this a

On the sixth day in the hospital, Dr. Chester sent me a message.I had saved Dr. Chester in my contacts as someone I could fully trust. When I saw the address he sent me, I changed my clothes and headed there immediately."Ms. Fleming, do you still remember me?" Dr. Chester asked in a gentle voice with a tender gaze.I let my guard down around him."I'm sorry, I don't.""It's fine. I asked you here because I wanted to fulfill our promise."He handed a card to me.I looked at him in confusion."This card has all of your savings throughout the years. This is a flight ticket to Marina City. With that, I have fulfilled my promise to you."Dr. Chester stood up and looked at me tenderly. "Ms. Fleming, I wish you a wonderful life."I took the card and flight ticket with a smile.I did not return to the hospital. Instead, I went straight to the airport. My parents started to freak out when they could not find me at the hospital. They searched everywhere but still could not find me.

When my parents found out about my condition and realized that I went missing, they started to regret all their past actions.Mom finally understood how important the Lego set that Raven had destroyed was to me. She went insane searching the entire house for it.In the end, she found it in the trash bin outside the house, covered in trash. The Lego bricks were even more broken, being left and ignored in the corner of the bin, just like how I was in the family. After Mom had reprimanded Dad, he finally realized how terrible he was to me. He tried to make up for it by using all his connections to search for me throughout the country. Raven completely changed when she was discharged from the hospital. She angrily smashed glasses at home."So, now you all love Rachel? Then, what am I? She was the one who barged into our lives and took things away from me! I'm the one who is suffering! How dare you all pretend to be saints right now?!"Raven shrieked hysterically, making my parents e

Due to the changes in the family, they no longer had the money or resources to look for me.They sold off the mansion and used their remaining savings to treat Raven.Raven's life slipped away quickly. Her last words were, "I don't want to die."My parents no longer had any money, so they were on a disability pension. I headed downstairs groggily to get some medicine. At the bottom of the stairs, I saw Raven toppling a huge Lego set I placed in the living room.
