In that moment, tension enveloped us, leaving both of us momentarily speechless in the face of the situation. My gaze shifted back to Alistair, and a subtle smile played on my lips as I discerned a distinct hint of jealousy in his eyes. A frown crept across his face, deepening with each passing second. Our eyes met, a silent challenge passing between us as I dared him to do the worst.

His gaze shifted away, focusing on our entwined arms, and he busied himself adjusting his tie. The tension lingered, accentuated by Jayden's subtle nervousness. However, my concern deepened as I wondered why Alistair refrained from reacting to it. The once-present frown on his face had dissipated, replaced by a subtle smile that left me puzzled and uneasy.

“Sir…“

“Just do as the lady says.” Alistair interjected, halting Jayden's attempt to speak further. He briskly passed us, exiting the scene, leaving Jayden and me to walk together, side by side.

As we approached the vehicle, Alistair turned at my dir

Her gaze shifted to Alistair, who wore a smirk while locking eyes with me. There was a subtle smile on her lips as she glanced back at me before finally uttering words that held a yet-unknown significance. “Oh, I’m sorry … I didn’t mean to offend you.“ She said and my brows creased as I noticed the amusement on Alistair’s face. Sense of Alistair's unspoken intention lingered; perhaps he refrained from pointing out my apparent jealousy to spare his friend's feelings or merely to tease me. I turned towards the young lady with a forced smile, battling the urge to blurt out that I wasn’t his girl but was merely under contract, overwhelmed me. “None taken.” I replied and she smiled before she finally walked away, after sparing another glance at him. “Jealous I see.“ Alistair finally spoke and my brows curled into a frown. I was annoyed by his statement and the fact that he had assumed I was jealous. He was wrong, totally wrong. Though my action were of that of someone jealous, I wasn’t

At first, no one spoke and I could hear my heart beating rapidly against my chest in the silence… I was scared. Though I have been scared before, this time, it truly felt different with my life on the line. I could see death flash before my eyes and Alistair’s hesitation, added to my anxiety. “Very well then," the man in the video declared, and a searing migraine overwhelmed me. On the verge of collapse, the grim certainty lingered that a barrage of bullets would soon pierce my skin. The imminent threat intensified, hanging heavily in the air. Temptation to scream at Alistair about his perceived selfishness welled up within me. In this dire situation, whether I lived or died seemed inconsequential, for there was no escape for him either way. The ominous reality was that he remained at the mercy of these dangerous circumstances, and the choices he made would dictate whether I lived or succumbed to the impending threat. “Don’t shoot.” He finally said as he glared at the them. ALISTAIR’S POVWith a blindfold covering my face, visibility was almost nonexistent. Attempting to feel around for any weapons in the vehicle proved futile. As I groped in the darkness, someone's boot came down hard on my hand, crushing it. The pain surged, and I reluctantly gave up on the idea of finding anything useful."What are you trying to do?" he asked, but I remained silent. If only I knew the identity of these assailants, I thought. I would have made them pay for the humiliation I endured. Imagining their faces, I envisioned a scenario where they were on their knees, pleading for their lives, and I reveled in the fantasy of making them suffer for what they had done to Chloe."I can double the pay," I said aloud, desperately hoping my words would reach and resonate with them. Aware that threatening them would likely worsen the situation, I considered the only option I had—making an offer. If they were working for someone, and the man in the video seemed a plausible connectio

CHLOE’S POV“When was the last time you saw him?““What did they say when he was taken away?”“Can you help us identify the assaulters?“As I found myself seated in the hospital, a relentless barrage of questions descended from the police officers surrounding me. Though their words reached my ears, none carried any discernible meaning, for my thoughts were clouded by tears, and my trembling lips while Jayden took it upon himself to give an answer to their question. The events of the previous night lingered vividly in my memory, destined to haunt me indefinitely. The awareness that numerous lives had been claimed by the rubble, accompanied by the agonizing screams that punctuated the night sky, remained an indelible presence. As the sun had set, we found ourselves still within the confines of the hospital. The police were diligently conducting an investigation, questioning the victims of the bomb blast. Their announcements regarding the discovery of five deceased

For a fleeting moment, time appeared to stand still, and a wave of relief washed over me as I held Alistair close. Unbeknownst to me, a tear had slipped down my cheek, a subconscious expression of the emotions coursing through me. I held him tighter, heedless of the bloodstains that marked both of us. "Are you alright?" Alistair's voice finally penetrated the cocoon of peace we had shared, bringing me back from the realm of fantasy to the reality of the present. As I pulled away, I became aware of my surroundings. Not just Jayden, but everyone in the room wore expressions of surprise at the unexpected display of affection. The intensity of the moment lingered, and I found myself grappling with the mix of emotions that had unfolded before the watchful eyes of those present. The aftermath of our unexpected embrace left me feeling awkward and yearning to escape, wishing for any place other than where I currently stood. A quick glance at Alistair's face revealed a slight frown, not con

Love? Was that really the emotion coursing through me? Was that the sentiment that surged each time my gaze met his? Could it be the explanation for my repeated attempts to capture his attention and the frustration I felt when faced with his rejections? All this while, I had convinced myself that I harbored no genuine care for him.My stomach churned at the thought, and I sensed my heart racing. Surprisingly, it didn't feel as terrible as I had anticipated. Strangely, it felt good, and there was a certain irony in realizing that I had fallen in love with someone like Alistair. How on earth was that even possible?Alistair never made me feel special, and every action of his seemed motivated by self-interest. It was clear that everything he did was meant to construct an image of us as a couple—the perfect couple. In light of this, how could I have possibly fallen in love with him? Or had I deluded myself to the point of forgetting the harsh reality, constructing a mental image that we w

“Thanks a bunch,” I grinned, snagging the two scoops of cotton candy from the vendor with delight. Returning the favor, he accepted the cotton candy as I turned around. Handing one to Alistair, he took it, and his expression gave away a slight discomfort, which I found a bit amusing. He didn't strike me as the type who enjoyed being seen in public, evident in his choice of a cowboy hat and sunglasses. Dressed in a matching white tank top and shorts that showcased his muscular arms, he glanced at the cotton candy and then shot me a look. His eyes betrayed a sense of boredom, contrasting with my own smile. “What? It’s nice.“ I said to him as I ate a bite from my candy and flashed him another smile. We found ourselves at a park, where I had envisioned spending the day together. I had stayed up all night jotting down notes on the activities we could do today. Alistair didn't seem overly thrilled about it, but he had still chosen to go along with the plan."Do you do this often?" he inq

"What are we doing here?" I inquired, my curiosity piqued as we rolled into a ranch.Alistair's choice of fun intrigued me; despite his cowboy attire, he didn't strike me as the horse-riding type. As he brought the vehicle to a gradual halt, he turned to me, a mischievous glint in his eyes.“You’ll see.” He said and we alighted the vehicle. I watched as he went to talk to a lady. They both looked like they were acquainted with one another as they laughed like old time friends. "Your girlfriend, I presume?" the dark-skinned lady inquired, casting a friendly glance in my direction. Her warm smile adorned a face that exuded perfection, leaving me silently captivated by her presence. Her skin boasted a smooth caramel tone, framing an oval face adorned with full eyebrows and lips. With a curvaceous figure, she exuded beauty, and beads of sweat shimmered on her forehead, catching the sunlight. What struck me most was her apparent lack of astonishment.
